If you happen to be a speaker of Portuguese, you may like to read this article published recently in Público, Portugal’s daily national newspaper in which I am interviewed about my work documenting the impacts of climate change around the world.

The article is titled “They document a changing world so no one can say they didn’t know”, and was part of World News Day, which was on 28th September, with this year’s focus on climate change.

Throughout the article I discussed the making of my projects, why I have chosen these specific stories to tell and what I think about the future importance of this type of photography in helping communicate the causes, effects and solutions to the climate crisis.

Thank you to China Dialogue for publishing this in-depth interview and feature about my work documenting the impacts of climate change along China’s Bohai Bay. This region has been identified as one of the most vulnerable coastlines in China and is predicted to be one of the worst affected in coming decades by rising sea levels and associated flooding, land subsidence and coastal erosion.

The aim of my 500km journey was to understand how this region is adapted and prepared for these imminent changes and assess the resilience of the people and the land. One of the busiest shipping regions in the world, its ports feed the megacities of Tianjin and nearby Beijing. It is home to tens of millions, the base of numerous industries, power stations, oil fields and has wetlands that act as important buffers to environmental change. As China’s shorelines change this century and start to feel the full force of rising sea levels, this region will be one of the worst hit and have some of the most significant social, economic and environmental impacts.

This project was made with support from the Resilience Journalism Travel Fund from the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY [City University of New York].

“Photography is doing a big job in raising awareness of climate change and informing our understanding of how the planet is changing. The urgent need for action is strengthened by the work of photographers such as Cristina Mittermeier and Sean Gallagher, who show the dire state of the planet and crises happening around the world with warnings if humanity doesn’t change course. Ahead of the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference summit, Graeme Green spoke with four photographers leading the way.”

In this one minute photography tip, I want to share with you the composition technique of a frame in a frame and how you how it can make your pictures more interesting.

This advanced framing technique is based around the idea that you use an object within your picture to frame your main subject matter. The easiest way to do this is to photograph through a door or window, with your main subject inside the natural frame the door or window forms. The frame of the door or window becomes a new second frame within your photograph’s natural frame, drawing closer attention to the subject for the photograph’s viewer.

Once you have mastered using doors and windows as frames, you can also try being more ambitious by looking for other different types of frames by which you can draw attention to your subject matter. This simple framing technique can help make your images much more interesting.

In this one minute photography tip, I want to share with you how capturing a bird in flight can make your photographs more interesting and dynamic.

A quick way to make an average scene more interesting, is to try to capture a flying bird somewhere in the frame. It’s a trick that is often used by professional photographers and it can transform a landscape or situation that otherwise might not be very interesting. However if you can can combine a flying bird with other interesting things happening within the frame at the same time, you can turn and already interesting scene into something even more special.

The trick to capturing a bird in flight is to use a higher shutter speed, to make sure you capture it relatively sharp, and then try to position it in a good place within the frame, ideally against sky, clouds, or a plane background where it can standout.

In this one minute photography tip, I want to share with you why the blue hour is one of the best times of day to make interesting pictures.

The blue hour is a time of the day that falls just before the sun rises, or just after the sun sets. At this time the sun is still below the horizon but the sky will be lit in various shades of colours, such as blues, pinks and oranges which you can use to make more interesting photos. —- As there is little light on the ground, it’s particularly good for making pictures using silhouettes. Try getting low and framing people or buildings against the sky for a powerful contrast between the blacks in the shadows and the vibrant sky.

It’s also a good time to shoot longer exposures, especially of anything that’s moving within the frame. With less light, it’s easier to get longer shutter speeds. Put your camera on a tripod and experiment with blurring moving objects in the frame.
