Laugh Boston, Laugh!

Laugh Boston is the stand-up brother to Improv Asylum, Boston’s improv & sketch comedy theater located in the North End. Laugh Boston is owned by Chet Harding & Norm Laviolette of Improv Asylum and John Tobin of Theatre District Productions.

Laugh Boston opened the doors to its 300-seat state-of-the-art comedy theater in September of 2013. The venue features premier stand-up comedy, including a weekly show called Boston Accents, as well as national acts. Laugh Boston is located in Boston’s Seaport District in the Westin Waterfront Hotel directly across from the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center. Laugh Bostonfeatures a full bar and a light fare, quick-serve menu.

Laugh Boston has stand-up shows every Wednesday through Saturday night and is available for Group Events, Private Bookings and more!

Why open a new club?

Over the past few years, and, as theater operators and performers, the Laugh Boston ownership team noticed a dearth of stand-up venues in Boston in the mid-level range. While there are a few remaining clubs in the 100-150 capacity, there remains a gap with no mid-range club. Because of that gap, the comedy scene has suffered greatly. A good portion of national names, and certainly regional and local stars, do not have the ability to “sell” a larger theater. As a direct result of the gap in Boston’s market, the performers are forced to work in other cities and industries, such as convention appearances and cruise ships.

Excellent Sound and Lights maintained by TKO Sound Boston!

The guys behind it all:

Chet Harding
A co-founder, CEO and Executive Producer of Improv Asylum, Chet has years of comedic acting, producing and directing experience as well as an extensive business background. Under the Improv Asylum banner, Chet has produced and performed in hundreds of live shows as well as several film and television projects. Prior to opening the comedy theater, he worked at Leo Burnett Advertising and Polaroid. At Polaroid, he was their Director of North American Advertising and PR for four years, overseeing the company’s national advertising, multi-million dollar media buying and planning, and PR. At Leo Burnett, he worked in New Business Development, as well as on the Kellogg’s account, including product development for new cereals.

Norm Laviolette
As co-founder, President and Executive Producer of Improv Asylum, Norm brings corporate as well as military experience toward the continued development and expansion of Improv Asylum’s theatrical and business divisions.

As an actor, writer and producer, Norm has written and produced several renowned television pilots and feature scripts. He was Executive Producer of the Emmy-Nominated Improv Asylum’s Vanity Project, as well as Executive Producer of Second City Boston, the hit musical You’re A Good Man, Scott Brown and the cult classic All The Single Ladies. Prior to a career in comedy, Norm worked for a marketing firm out of New York City promoting various Microsoft product launches. He is a former member of the Massachusetts and Vermont Army National Guard and a graduate of the Massachusetts Military Academy’s Officer Candidate School. Norm continues to lead Improv Asylum’s strategic business and artistic vision locally, nationally and globally.

John Tobin
John was elected District 6 representative to the Boston City Council in 2001, and was re-elected 4 times. He left the City Council and began working at Northeastern University in August 2010 as the first Vice President of City & Community Affairs. In addition, Tobin has worked in the Boston comedy scene since 1992, when he started as a doorman at a local comedy club. Today, Tobin owns Theatre District Productions, a live comedy production company that produces and operates shows in and around Boston.

With more business’s locating to the Seaport Innovation District of Boston and the growth of the convention and exhibition centers popularity – additional hotel space is in great demand. Plans are outlined below for what may be Boston’s largest hotel and possibly one of the most expansive projects in the country.

The Massachusetts Port Authority and the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority will jointly try to develop what could be the largest hotel in Boston — a 1,200- to 1,500-room complex near the city’s convention center in South Boston.

Approved by the boards of both agencies Wednesday, the venture will seek out developers to build a new headquarters hotel on Massport land across from the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center near the corner of Summer and D streets. It would be one of the largest hotel projects in the country, according to the convention center authority.

The headquarters hotel project is contingent upon legislative approval of the convention center’s proposed $2 billion expansion, which would double the exhibition and meeting space at the South Boston hall.

If built, the hotel would go a long way toward solving what the authority says is its chief drawback to enticing large trade shows to Boston: an acute shortage of rooms within walking distance of the convention center.

Boston hotels are already at capacity, and the Seaport District is particularly in need of more lodging. The area requires an additional 2,300 hotel rooms just to meet current demand, according to the convention authority. And if the center is allowed to expand, then the area would need as many as 6,000 new rooms.

Already the authority has moved to alleviate the shortage with the construction of two hotels — a 330-room Aloft hotel and a 180-room Element hotel, both to be operated by Starwood Hotels and Resorts Worldwide Inc. — set to start by the end of the year. Once the headquarters hotel is underway, Rooney said, the next critical step is the 320-room expansion of the Westin Boston Waterfront next to the convention center.

Rooney said getting this first wave of hotel development in place is key to enlarging the convention center.

“We’d be on a fool’s errand to expand the BCEC without additional hotel rooms,” Rooney said.

The authorities plan to begin seeking out developers to construct and finance the headquarters hotel complex. The developer would enter into a lease agreement with Massport, which has similar agreements with other hotels and buildings in the area. In many cases those lease payments to Massport are tied to the property’s performance.

The headquarters hotel is expected to have between 1,200 and 1,500 rooms and create 2,000 construction jobs and nearly 1,000 permanent jobs. Originally, the headquarters hotel was slated to have 1,000 rooms.

Laugh Boston is making no joke about upping the comedy ante here in Boston!

Laugh Boston, a new 300-seat comedy club due to open in August in the Seaport District. The partners behind it — Norm Laviolette, Chet Harding, and John Tobin — are betting clubs can still work with an onstage mix of local comedians and medium-size names: up-and-comers just starting to crack the national market as well as acts on their way back down the ladder.

Laugh Boston will be a different kind of business, says Laviolette, whose 15-year-old Improv Asylum pays its bills by doing both stage shows and corporate gigs. Unlike some clubs that have come and gone in the basements or side rooms of other establishments, Laugh Boston will control its own space, dictating its own schedule, able to rent the space out for conferences or private shows during the day.

Laugh Boston is a partnership of John Tobin and Chet Harding and Norm Laviolette, (co-founders of Improv Asylum). The group will open a stand-alone Comedy Club, Laugh Boston, at the Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel in the Seaport District this summer.

If you happen to own an iPhone, you are used to the process of replacing your old one with the latest and greatest.

But if you’re like most people, you don’t spend much time trying to get any money for the old version.

Since 2008, a Boston start-up, Gazelle, has been providing a service that buys your old iPhone and other high-end consumer devices, cleans out all its personal data, and then resells it at a profit in an emerging market, such as China, where plenty of people are happy to pay less than the retail price for the latest version to own your old one.

In a January 21 interview with Gazelle CEO, Israel Ganot, I learned that Gazelle springs from his long experience with ecommerce leaders.

Gazelle CEO Israel Ganot

Ganot co-founded Gazelle in 2006 after he tried to recycle an old Blackberry and the retailer told him it would be happy to take it off his hands for $20.

Two factors spurred his decision to start Gazelle. First, he believed that “individuals should be rewarded for recycling” and second, he saw an opportunity – “many electronics still hold value but yet are wasting away in landfills.”

This “sparked the idea to build a business that would redefine the way we think about buying, owning, selling, and recycling electronics.” In 2008, Ganot became President and CEO of the company.

Since then, Gazelle has become a leader in a product category dubbed “reCommerce.” Ganot estimates that $1 billion worth of old phones and other electronics devices were bought in 2012 and he expects that figure to rise to $5 billion by 2015.

About 12% of people with old electronics devices actually try to recycle them and Ganot thinks that number will rise to 20 percent by 2015. Moreover, the number of devices that consumers buy continues to climb.

For its part, Gazelle has accepted accepted more than 1 million gadgets and attracted more than 500,000 customers. And Gazelle has been growing very rapidly – at a 110% annual rate over the last three years, according to Ganot.

Ganot’s background includes “more than 19 years in e-commerce and offline retail.” He spent six years at eBay and PayPal, where he helped lead its expansion to Europe, Latin America and Asia. He was also Director of Finance & Operations at eBay UK Ltd., “helping to scale the local business to $300 million.” Moreover, Ganot began his career as a retail analyst with Goldman Sachs, earned his BS at NYU’s Stern School and his MBA from Harvard University.

Gazelle has a clever business model. It buys low – taking, say, an iPhone 4 off of your hands for about $150 – and sells higher. For example, Gazelle might be able to find a buyer in an emerging market like China willing to pay $250.

In the process, Gazelle customers mail their old devices to the company’s service center in Dallas where the device is wiped of all the customer’s personal information and sees to it that the customer gets paid what she was promised.

Gazelle has raised plenty of capital for this business. Its investors have ponied up a total of $46 million for equity stakes in the company. Ganot decided to relocate the company from Cambridge to Waltham to Allston, to its current address in Boston’s Seaport district. He decided that he could afford the rent once he moved the service center to Dallas – and the Seaport district is a location that makes it easier to attract the talent Gazelle needs.

To that end, Gazelle has about 65 employees – keeping the number roughly constant over the last year.

Over the next five years, Ganot would like to see Gazelle become a “$250 million to $300 million company in the next two to three years” that would have the potential to sell its shares to the public in an initial public offering. In order to get there, he believes that Gazelle must become “a household brand.”

Getting to that point means providing very high levels of customer service so that existing customers will tell their colleagues about the service.

And Ganot believes that people trust the company to both pay them what it promises for their old electronics and to clean all the personal information off the devices before reselling them.

And Ganot tracks so-called Net Promoter Scores – a measure of how likely a customer is to recommend Gazelle to others. By that measure, Ganot is proud that Gazelle’s score has risen from the 70s to “between 80 and 85.”

But Ganot is not just relying on good word of mouth. It also spends money on TV and radio advertising.

So if Gazelle achieves its ambitious goals, it will end up doing well for its investors by doing good for its customers.

A 10-year-old medical device company headed to the Hub’s Innovation District has won crucial U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval to sell its breast cancer tissue assessment tool nationwide.

Surgeons using the MarginProbe System from Dune Medical Devices can better detect cancer cells along the margins of excised breast tissue via a device sensor that emits electromagnetic energy.

“We think it can be a very important addition to the surgeon’s ability to perform a complete lumpectomy with one surgery,” Dune Medical CEO Dan Levangie, 62, told the Herald, adding the U.S. rate of second operations for patients who have lumpectomies ranges from 30 percent to 60 percent. “It is indeed a breakthrough and a first-of-its-kind device.”

MarginProbe, which is now available nationwide, is currently sold in Germany, Switzerland and Italy, Levangie said.

FDA approval of the device was based on results from a 664-
patient device effectiveness study.

This month, Dune Medical will also move its U.S. operations from Framingham to 25 Thomson Place in Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood, next door to where car-sharing service Zipcar will park its new headquarters.

The privately held Dune Medical has been financed by Apax Partners, a London-based private equity firm, since 2004.

It also has offices in Switzerland and Israel, where the majority of its employees are based.

Dune Medical founder and former CEO Dan Hashimshony was previously chief scientist of X-Technologies, a company acquired by Guidant Corp., the medical device giant swallowed by Boston Scientific in 2006.

Dune Medical Devices CEO – Dan Levangie – Photo Courtesy: Boston Herald

Levangie said Dune Medical may hire as many as 25 new employees within the year based on MarginProbe’s market response.

Research and development is also under way to explore how the device’s technology can be applied to other diseases, such as prostate cancer.

“The market has been waiting for this and there’s a lot of enthusiasm out there,” said Levangie, who previously held executive positions with Cytyc Corp., which was acquired by Hologic Inc. in 2007.

“This really represents the culmination of almost 10 years of very hard work by a small group of individuals that now have the approval to bring the device to the largest market in the world,” he said. “We’re excited to bring it to market.”

The MarginProbe system already is used in Israel, Germany, and Switzerland to ensure all cancer cells are found in breast surgery.

Federal regulators have approved a new instrument made by Dune Medical Devices Inc. that enables breast cancer surgeons to determine immediately whether they have removed all of the cancer tissue during lumpectomy procedures, the company is set to disclose Wednesday.

Dune Medical, based in Caesarea, Israel, plans to move its US office from Framingham to Boston’s Innovation District next week as it builds a sales force to market the device, called the MarginProbe system, to breast cancer surgeons across the nation.

The company expects to have 25 to 30 sales, finance, and administrative employees in Massachusetts by the end of the year, up from about six today, said Daniel Levangie, the Boston-based chief executive of 11-year-old Dune Medical. Dune Medical’s research and development team and its founder, Dr. Dan Hashimshony, remain in Israel.

Dune Medical’s new device, already in use in Israel, Germany, and Switzerland, got the green light from the Food and Drug Administration eight months after the privately held company filed its application for premarket approval. That followed clinical trials involving 664 patients at two dozen sites in the United States and Israel. MarginProbe was shown to be effective in identifying cancer along the edge of breast tissue during lumpectomy surgery.

“It supports the performance of breast-conserving surgery,” said Dr. Freya Schnabel, director of breast surgery at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York, who was principal investigator for the clinical trial at NYU Langone. “It can be very difficult in the operating room to understand where the cancer ends. This device gives surgeons information intra-operatively — at the time of surgery — to determine whether more tissue needs to be taken.”

‘This is a first-of-a-kind device. But the technology can be applied to a wide variety of other cancers.’

Lumpectomies account for roughly two-thirds of breast cancer surgeries. Their numbers have been growing in Western countries as surgeons seek to conserve breast tissue and avoid mastectomies, the surgical removal of the breast, whenever possible. But after a lumpectomy, it can take up to a week to send tissue samples to a pathology lab and learn whether there is “cancer on the margin,” necessitating a second procedure.

MarginProbe, using disposable probes attached to a console containing detection software, can be deployed during the initial lumpectomy to see if more tissue should be cut away. The device uses radio frequency energy to identify the “signature” of tissue and differentiate between healthy and abnormal cells.

“This is the only device that will identify microscopic cancer on the margin,” Levangie said, noting that MarginProbe is his company’s first approved product. “This is a first-of-a-kind device. But the technology can be applied to a wide variety of other cancers.”

Among other things, Dune Medical scientists are working on a tissue-assessment device for use during prostate cancer procedures and a device to aid in breast biopsies, he said.

MarginProbe’s FDA approval had been widely anticipated since the agency sent Dune Medical a so-called approvable letter in November, indicating it planned to OK the device, subject to final agreement with the company on a post-approval study.

MarginProbe, including the console and probes, will cost health care providers about $2,000, a fraction of the cost of screening equipment used to make the initial diagnosis of breast cancer.

The device is designed to be used only during breast-conserving surgeries; the goal is to eliminate second surgeries, which now occur in more than 20 percent of cases and can cost about $7,000 each, Levangie said.

With about 285,000 cases of breast cancer diagnosed in the United States each year, and at least 400,000 in Europe, the potential market for MarginProbe is large, Levangie said.

Dune Medical is backed by a London private equity firm, Apax Partners.

Levangie, who has worked for Abbott Laboratories and Cytyc Corp., a Marlborough company sold to Hologic Inc. in 2007, said it is too soon to determine whether Dune Medical will eventually go public or be sold to a larger life-sciences company.

For years Boston civic and business leaders have dreamed of developing the city’s Seaport District, a collection of aging industrial buildings and parking lots separated from downtown by an old shipping channel.

That dream is steadily gaining traction as indicated by the recent purchase by DivcoWest Real Estate Services LLC of four buildings in the district for $107 million.

The buildings include a former wool warehouse built in the 1800s, when the area was one of the country’s biggest textile hubs, and two buildings originally used by candy and shoe manufacturers.

In recent decades the properties have been converted into about 360,000 square feet of office space, now about 95% occupied.

The $107 million price tag was 17% more than the seller, Brickman Associates of New York, paid when it acquired the buildings in a series of transactions in 2006 and 2007 near the peak of the market, according to county records.

Keith Wallace, a managing director in DivcoWest’s Boston office, said the Seaport district has gone through a “fundamental shift” resulting in higher rents and demand.

The Seaport’s resurgence partly reflects the overall health of Boston commercial property.

The city has seen values return to within 1% of their previous peaks, closer than any other major city in the country, according to a NovemberMoody’s MCO -0.02% /RCA report.

With help from a booming technology sector, Boston’s office-vacancy rate was one of the country’s lowest in the third quarter at 14.1%, although that is still above the 11.1% it hit in 2007, according to Reis Inc.

REIS +0.94%

After the Seaport District’s long decline through much of the 20th century, its historic buildings became popular with artists and startup companies. The massive Big Dig road project also has made the area more accessible and

Mayor Tom Menino has thrown his political weight behind what he renamed the Innovation District.

Construction began last year on a 1.1-million square-foot headquarters for drug manufacturer Vertex Pharmaceuticals Inc. VRTX +1.04% State Street Corp.

STT -0.69% also is consolidating workers from a number of sites around the city into a new $225 million, 11-story tower.

Hundreds of apartments are under construction.

“It used to be something we had to explain more and now it’s something we’re seeing private developers and investors take on,” says Nicole Fichera, manager of the district for the Boston Redevelopment Authority. “It has its own engine.”

DivcoWest is in familiar territory. Founded in 1993 by Stuart Shiff, DivcoWest gained a reputation as a shrewd buyer of offices following the dot-com bust when many technology companies were raising equity by cashing out of real estate.

Earlier this year DivcoWest was part of a venture that sold an empty office building in San Francisco to Dolby Laboratories DLB +1.14% for $110 million. That was more than double the amount the venture paid last year.

The Boston deal could test the company’s knack for timing acquisitions.

The firm expects to increase its initial return of nearly 6% as leases signed at the bottom of the market expire and as new residents and office workers arrive at projects now under construction in the area.

But average rents in the Boston area have yet to fully recover to precrisis peaks, according to Reis Inc., a real-estate research firm.

Also some analysts are raising alarms that prices of commercial real estate today are being propped up by low interest rates.

“We think some people may be in for a rude shock when interest rates go back up over the next 10 years,” says Tad Philipp, director of commercial real-estate research at Moody’s Investors Service.

But DivcoWest remains confident that it is riding upward momentum.

Building values in the market are “substantially” below the cost of construction, Mr. Shiff said in a written statement. “We think that spells opportunity.”

WHEN you hear the insane notion of “legitimate rape” being aired by a Republican congressman — a member of the House science committee no less — it makes you wonder some days how we became the world’s richest, most powerful country, and, more important, how we’re going to stay there.

The short answer is that, thank God, there’s still a bunch of people across America — innovators and entrepreneurs — who just didn’t get the word.

They didn’t get the word that Germany will eat our breakfast or that China will eat our lunch.

They didn’t get the word that we’re in a recession and heading for a fiscal cliff. They’re not interested in politics at all.

Instead, they just go out and invent stuff and fix stuff and collaborate on stuff. They are our saving grace, and whenever I need a pick-me-up, I drop in on one of them.

I did just that last week, visiting the design workshop of Rethink Robotics, near Boston’s airport, where I did something I’ve never done before: I programmed a robot to perform the simple task of moving widgets from one place to another. Yup, I trained the robot’s arms using a very friendly screen interface and memory built into its mechanical limbs.

And therein lie the seeds of a potential revolution. Rethink’s goal is simple: that its cheap, easy-to-use, safe robot will be to industrial robots what the personal computer was to the mainframe computer, or the iPhone was to the traditional phone. That is, it will bring robots to the small business and even home and enable people to write apps for them the way they do with PCs and iPhones — to make your robot conduct an orchestra, clean the house or, most important, do multiple tasks for small manufacturers, who could not afford big traditional robots, thus speeding innovation and enabling more manufacturing in America.

“If you see pictures of robots welding or painting” in a factory, “you will not see humans nearby because it is not safe” being around swinging robot arms, explains Rethink’s founder, Rodney Brooks, the Australian-born former director of the M.I.T. Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory and the co-founder of iRobot, which invented the Roomba vacuum-cleaning robot.

Traditional industrial robots are fixed and not flexible, and they take a long time — and a skilled engineer — to program them to do one repeatable task.

“Our robot is low-cost, easily programmable, not fixed and not dangerous,” says Brooks. “We were in a small plastics company the other day, and the owner said he is using the robot for two hours to do one task and then rolling it over to do another. With our robots, you teach them about the specific task you want done, and when you are done with that, you program another one.” And if your hand gets in the way, the robot just stops.

The Rethink design team includes Bruce Blumberg, the product manager of the Apple LaserWriter — as well as 75 other experts from Russia, Georgia, Venezuela, Egypt, Australia, India, Israel, Portugal, Britain, Sri Lanka, the United States and China. “It is all made in America,” says Brooks, but by “the best talent” gathered “from around the world.”

This is the company of the future. Forget about “outsourcing.” In today’s hyperconnected world, there is no “in” and no “out.” There’s only “good, better and best,” and if you don’t assemble the best team you can from everywhere, your competitor will.

The Rethink robot will be unveiled in weeks. I was just given a sneak peek — on the condition that I did not mention its “disruptive” price point and some other unique features.

“Just as the PC did not replace workers but empowered them to do many new things,” argues Brooks, the same will happen with the Rethink robot. “Companies will become even more competitive, and we will be able to keep more jobs here. … The minute you say ‘robots’ people say: ‘It’s going to take away jobs. But that is not true. It doesn’t take away jobs. It will change how you do them,” the way the PC did not get rid of secretaries but changed what they did.

Actually, the robots will eliminate jobs, just as the PC did, but they be will lower-skilled ones. And the robots will also create new jobs or enlarge existing ones, but they will be jobs that require more skills. I watched a Rethink robot being tested at the Nypro plastics factory in Clinton, Mass. A single worker was operating a big molding machine that occasionally spewed out too many widgets, which forced the system to overload. The robot was brought in to handle overflow, while the same single worker still operated the machine. “We want the robot to be the extension of the worker, not the replacement of the worker,” said Michael McGee, Nypro’s director of technology.

This is the march of progress.

It eliminates bad jobs, empowers good jobs, but always demands more skill and creativity and always enables fewer people to do more things.

We went through the same megashift when our agricultural economy was replaced by the industrial economy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Therefore, what this election should be about is how we spawn thousands of Rethinks that create new industries, new jobs and productivity tools.

Alas, it isn’t. So I’m just grateful these folks here in Boston didn’t get the word.
