Why Responsive Design might not be good enough

April 21 2015 Google is officially creating an alteration of it's ranking algorithm to favor websites that are "Mobile Friendly" Now that phrase "mobile friendly" is/ was subject to interpretation: Many web developers interpreted that to mean "responsive design"

What that meant in practical terms is:

because the screen size, the available real estate with which to view a website is so much smaller on a tablet or iPad as compared to on a full size desktop computer or a laptop, "responsive" meant the website would check to see "who" was viewing the website and respond by altering to fit the available screen space.

Umm.. well that "technically works" but if that's ALL you do, the text can be way, WAY too tiny to be "usable" ( Hence the web developer term UX witch stands for User Experience )

However Google Offers what IT thinks "mobile friendly" is or isn't

To clear up some of this.. Google offers this free tool to provide a definitive answer to what it considers "good enough"

How do you know if Google Places is really calling you?

More than a few small business report getting calls from people purporting to be Google.
They are not really Google
They are shysters, most often a telemarketing firm using unethical tactics.
They are telemarkers hired by ill informed local SEO firms to generate leads.

the telemarketer needs to get 5 minutes of a business owners time to get you to listen to their pitch. If they identified themselves as "telemarketers for the Acme Local SEO company, you'd likely hang up. However if they (mis)represent themselves as being "with Google" you'll be surprised enough to give them 5 minutes of your time.

Here's how they're "spitting hairs"

remember, they're telemarketers who "represent" company X, they're not company X
Company X is banking on any liability for misrepresentation falling on the telemarketing firm, not company X
Company X didn't really "misrepresent themselves", the telemarketing firm did.

Now Company X does kinda "work with" Google, in that they, like me, are in the Google consulting business.

You, the small business owner, does not really know the nuances of what "working with" Google means.

So, in the telemarketers mind, they're not "lying", what they are doing is "stretching the truth"

So how do you know if Google Places is really calling you?

Google Places calls show 650-253-2000 on the caller ID, and Google as the name.

This is a giant measuring exercise

I operate a Business Networking Coop group on Facebook.

On our group I teach Local SEO and Social Media Marketing.

I've spent the past week (80 hours of the past week) poking under the hood of the new exciting Google+

There are some flaws G hasn't ironed out yet... if you don't know what you're doing with G+ you're likely to be disappointed .

Biggest flaw in it's current incarnation?

Finding people to add... more importantly, attracting people to add YOU.

If you're G+ profile isn't filled out.... people will glance at you and not be able to figure out if you are someone interesting or if you might be someone they would want to network with

Almost everyone in the group have been asking me to give them a step by step cheat sheet for how to Optimize their Google+ Profile

Step One: Decide on ONE KEYWORD PHRASE... and keep that ONE phrase for no less than 12 weeks before switching targets
Step Two: Do you know how to make an HREF link? ,Do you know how to make an Anchor Text Link?
In your profile, there is a WYSIWYG editor
craft an "under 162 character" sentence that "sells the sizzle, not the steak", it is your buzz phrase AND your chosen keyword phrase.
this is important: Sell ONE thing but sell it well
Write that sentence out, highlight it, and make it into a URL
Now that was your first line in your profile...
It is part of the "not for human consumption" part of your profile
Step Three: Craft a "Written to please a Human Audience" resume with this caveat
Now write a 255 character to 250 word written description of why someone would want to connect with you.
Make that prose with the premise of WIIFM (what's in it for your reader)
Do NOT make it full of YOUR ego
no one cares who you are...
The the last set of paragraphs is the "this is who I am, where I went to school, what is important to me

Facebook users are starting to search for local products and services according to Mashable.com

Facebook has just won a patent covering a certain type of search algorithm, one that is largely based on the interests and clicks of a user’s friends and friends-of-friends.

Specifically, the patent is for “ranking search results based on the frequency of clicks on the search results by members of a social network who are within a predetermined degree of separation.”The patent continues, “Search results, including sponsored links and algorithmic search results, are generated in response to a query and are marked based on frequency of clicks on the search results by members of social network who are within a predetermined degree of separation from the member who submitted the query. The markers are visual tags and comprise either a text string or an image.”

What we do know is that Facebook search has been a priority for the company since its redesign earlier this year. At that time, the search bar on the site was given a prominent new position, and several under-the-hood upgrades rounded out the Facebook search experience.

We’ve also seen a lot of sidebar ads and recommendations lately centering around what a user’s friends like within the site. All in all, the patent seems to line up with Facebook’s general mission to explore (and profit from) the synapses and connections within a social network.

I'm finding that if you don't "bribe" people (offer value isn't really bribing) they wont "say something" or interact... no interaction = your company facebook notes are NOT going out to the News Feed

Getting your posts to make it to the General Facebook News Feed is "friends of friends"... that's a WHOLE LOTTA EyeBalls on your posts if you make it to the News Feed

A Company Facebook Page is only as good as it's fan base interaction, it does no one any good to have a Facebook business page that is broadcasting (spamming) and not receiving (interaction), Facebook will block the outgoing messages of a FB page that is sending and not receiving.

Problem:
if you're a newbie to Facebook Business Pages, the default view of your Company Facebook Page Wall does not always show you that a prospective customer just asked you a question:

What you have to do is click the link marked "Options" just below your wall, on the right side

Then click "Just Others"

Everyone wants their company to Rank #1 in Google (or as close as humanly possible).
What if you sell products or services LOCALLY?

Would you want to field phone calls from a thousand miles (or more) away from your target demographic area? Would it do you much good to rank in Oklahoma if you only competed in Florida? There is such a thing as LOCAL Google search results. Before we get too carried away, be advised there are 3 parts to a Google search page and one of those is specifically local.

Anatomy of a SERP
What is a serp? "Search Engine Results Page". They are divided into 3 distinct sections.

The Local Business Listings
The Organic or Natural (main body of search listings)
The Sponsored listings/ Paid listings/

Straight Advertising or in other words Google AdWords Number 3 can sometimes be split in 2 places: Adwords are always on the right side of a SERP, but depending on the volume of searches (and the volume of people paying to rank for a given keyword) sometimes sponsored listings are at the very top of a search result page. Google is far and away the largest search engine but not the only one on the planet that people use; Yahoo, Bing and AOL search, Ask.com, and every yellowpage clone I've seen lists the sponsored links prominently at the top before any eyes ever get to the main body of listings.
Google shows different results to those out of town than they show to people locally (that includes you).

Google can do this because they knows quite a bit about you, before you ever hit the "search" button. If someone is searching for X locally (and Google knows that hypothetical person is physically searching IN said locality) the Google Maps listings will display above the organic listings.
If said person is searching for X product or service in a given location and they are NOT physically located within said locality, the local business listings (Google Maps) will show up in the middle of the organic listings.

What you want to do as a business owner is to get your company website to rank in 2 or more of the 3 available slots. My research shows me that it seldom does a company good to rank in the organics if they are not ranking in the Google Maps. Similarly if you are found in the top of the Googlemaps but not in the top ten organic listings this can severely lessen the number of phone calls or inquires your advertising is attempting to receive.

If you (or the SEO firm you contract with) manages to get your business in all 3 slots in a serp, that's the brass ring of local Google advertising. Depending on the product/ service and the competition vying for those serp rankings, if you're in all 3 spots of a serp, you are most likely to clean up. The reason is that your prospects are likely to assume that Google apparently thinks very highly of you if it lists you "everywhere".
For a fee, a competent search engine marketing firm can get your company listed prominently in 2 or more of those coveted Google segments. For a fee I'll do it as well, but for free I'll give you this much: Rename your website with the geographic area you wish to compete in and you'll do much better than a competing website named something else
.
Hint: No one cares what your name is, I know you're very proud of it, but trust me, the prospective clients you're wooing care ONLY about 2 things: What they need and where they can get it.
For example, I'm located in Maryland, so any client of mine who is paying me to rank statewide, will get a serise of blogs with Maryland in the title, in the domain name, in the opening paragraph of text and so on.

(A 2008 PEW/Internet survey found that 49% of online Americans use search engines every day, and a 2008 iProspect/JupiterResearch study found that “68% of search engine users click a search result within the first page of results, and a full 92% of search engine users click a result within the first three pages of search results.”)

Alot of webmasters and 'SEOs' alike ask tons of questions about why their PR has dropped, how they can increase it, etc., etc.

I'm here to set the record straight. Google PR IS a major part of your rankings. HOWEVER, the way everyone here uses the term (99% of the time) is in reference to the VISIBLE Google PR value found in their toolbar. This is a POOR measure of PR folks and should not be used in ANY discussion about rankings or loss.

What we know: Google Visible Green Toolbar is updated quarterly. The information in the toolbar is not only old, but it's only snapshot of the overall health of a web site. Basically it's a loose indicator of the value of the incoming links to that particular web site.

But even then it's inaccurate. You do'nt want to even base links (those you acquire) solely on this value. Case in point. I have a web site, 60 Yahoo! back links recorded, more in Webmasters. There are nothing but junky (but related) links. The links are PR3 or less (ALL OF THEM), HOWEVER, what we see is a PR 5 for the web site that is slightly more than a year. WHY?

TWO links from a subdomain from CNN. That's it. PR 5. Visible PR overvalued? Probably, but nonetheless, an example of how basing any web marketing decisions on visible google PR is flawed. This solidifies the case of RELEVANT and AUTHORITY incoming links, NOT LINKS BASED ON PR.

Never should you ask the question about HOW to increase PR. That's the wrong question. That's like asking how far a car can fly. You want to ask, "what's causing my slow rankings or loss? Can I get more links? Should I be investing in more cool content?"

DO NOT ASK, 'should I increase PR'? PR is a result of those two items I mentioned above. You cannot directly influence the stupid green toolbar value! You CAN influence the links you get and the content you provide. whew.

Local Google Advertising

Google offers a free business listing to small businesses at the top of most local search results pages.

Anatomy of a Google search result page:

Listings on the right side bar are paid advertisements, often called "sponsored links"
The main body of a search result page are called the "organic" or "natural" search listings
At the very top in a colored text box are also paid advertisements, sponsored links
Above the organic listings are "Google Local Business Listings"

This wiki deals with only with the Local Business Listings

You will notice a map associated with each listing, this is because Google used the existing infrastructure of Google Maps to implement the free business listings. It's generally thought that Google offered this free service, and gave its location on a search result page prominence above the organic listings because of the popularity of Google's Adwords program.

Adwords is a PPC (pay per click) advertising system where keywords and keyword phrases are bid on in an auction like system.
The immense popularity of Adwords priced smaller Mom n Pop stores out of the market due to the ever escalating costs of certain keywords. Google became fearful that it's search platform would be return search results of the "rich and famous" thus reflecting only what the rich and powerful wanted seen on Google search results.

How does Google determine which website should rank higher than another?
Google uses a computer program algorithm based on hundreds of factors as the vast size of the internet precludes any human capability of keeping the listings accurate or current. That algorithm is a closely guarded trade secret within Google. Search Engine Optimization Consultants learn what Google apparently likes and doesn't like from the observable behavior of search results.

Google Maps algorithm is different from the algorithm that anoints one site over another. It's also slower to update. If your customers leave glowing reviews of your product or service on the link provided your site will climb in rank. You are permitted up to 10 photos of your product or service, use as many of those slots as possible. Fill out as much information about your business as space allotted provides, being verbose is better than being succinct when it comes to Google Local Business Listings

Many small businesses get leads and interested inquiries from a local business listing even if they don't have a website url. Still other small businesses find it unnecessary to have their company listed anywhere other than the top local business listings. If your listing falls in ranking or is bumped out of it's spot by a newcomer and you find your company losing sales because of it, you may want to outsource your rankings management to a local search engine optimization firm.

The fees involved for a local business listing may be less than the fees for improving your company website's organic listing.

What Determines Google Rank?

Ever wonder why your companies listing in Google does OK in the main body of Google's search results page but is not in the top 10 of those pesky Google Local Business Listings?

Ultimately what you want is to be found in BOTH sets of listings, the net effect of which would be to drive home in your prospective customers Mind's Eye that Google apparently thinks pretty highly of your company if Google is displaying YOUR company listing in the Local Business Listings and in the Organic Search Rankings.

Well, people's perception and Google's reality are far, far apart.

Google didn't *pick* you to be #1 and your competitor to be #11

A computer program picked you over the hapless fella you compete with. A person did not visit your site, take notes, compare notes, make a descion, hear the belly aching and whining of the poor fool who got bumped off of his front page listed by a website that ranked better than his...

nope, an algorithm picked you over them.

Think about it... there are what? a Gazillion webpages already indexed in Google? And how many tens of thousands of new webpages being created as we speak? Some of those tens of thousands are being "generated" by a "bot".

There is no way on God's Green Earth a staff of humans could possibly keep up with that kind of volume. An algorithm did it. The robot that scours the Internet (in the SEO industry we call that "spidering") is titled GoogleBot.

GoogleBot Can't Really *Read*

GoogleBot can NOT read... but it CAN count

Googlebot counts the words on your webpage, it counts the keywords and keyword phrases you use in your copy. Is y0ur company website a little light on copy? Too bad for you.

It matters little to Googlebot if the fancy flash graphic and dramatic digital photos depicting your most important product are... well the damn thing can't decipher a photo! but it CAN read text.

What ever makes your photos good, better or best and likewise your competitors photos crappy is subjective. Art is subjective, math is not.

Either the keywords are on your webpage (Prominently placed at the top of the page I hope) or the keyw0rds are not.

He who has the most keywords (elegantly, tactfully and deftly constructed with proper enough grammar for the spell checking programmed Googlebot to index).. Wins that coveted top spot!

But... the Google Local Business Listings are a different story. The algo is different.

What Google is looking for and rewards when it sees it for the organic search results page (the body of the page) is one thing. What Googlebot is looking to see in the Free Local Google Advertising Listings is quite another.

I'm not about to reveal the entire loophole in a "Google Secrets Revealed" post, not even for a hefty $1000 fee for an ebook (I'd do it for that price if it were ticket sales to a seminar and I got a couple dozen of you to buy $1000 tickets to eagerly learn how I do what it is I do) (that's in the works by the way)

No, I'm not telling, not the whole thing but I will give you a hint, and I'm giving said hint in the form of my own Maryland search engine optimization results. This is not theory, This is not alleged, What follows is battle tested.

Since Dave took over my site, I have steadily ranked on the first page when searched under Frederick Maryland printers. This has increased my new customer calls from zero to at least one a day. The Shocking Power of Authority

Let’s say you see a newspaper ad saying the psychology department at Yale is running a little “experiment on memory.” Paid volunteers are needed for the hour-long study, so you figure why not?

Upon arrival at the lab, you meet two men — a research scientist in a lab coat, and another volunteer just like yourself. The researcher proceeds to explain the study to you both.

He tells you the study is about the effects of punishment on memory. The task of the other volunteer will be to learn a series of word pairings (he’s called the “Learner”).

Your job as the “Teacher” will be to test the Learner’s memory of the word pairs, and administer electric shocks for each wrong answer. And for every new wrong answer, the voltage goes up.

You’re not sure about this whole thing, but it must be okay, right? The testing begins, and when the other volunteer misses a question, you pull a lever that delivers a mild shock.

Over time, though, the shock levels increase, and the Learner is grunting audibly. At 120 volts, he tells you the shocks are really starting to hurt. At 150 volts, he tries to quit.

The researcher tells you to keep going, and that the shocks will cause “no permanent tissue damage” to the Learner. You continue questioning and delivering punishment for incorrect answers.

At 165 volts, the Learner screams.

At 300 volts, the Learner refuses to respond any longer, as the shocks are impairing his mental capacities. The researcher tells you to treat non-responses as incorrect answers.

The Learner is screeching, kicking, and pleading for mercy with every subsequent shock, all the way up to 450 volts when the researcher finally stops you.

Scary story.

This couldn’t possibly have really happened, right?

Well, actually, it did, in 1963 at Yale, during a series of experiments by Stanley Milgram.

But here’s the real scoop about the Milgram experiment:

• there were no actual electric shocks

• the Learner was an actor

• the study had nothing to do with memory.

What Milgram wanted to know was how far the Teachers would go when told to continue to deliver those shocks, since they thought they really were.

About two-thirds (65%) of the subjects administered every shock up to 450 volts, no matter how much the Learner begged for mercy.

However, without the researcher’s encouragement to continue, the study found that the test subjects would have stopped giving punishment quite early on.

The results shocked the Yale faculty (no pun intended), and have become a part of modern psychological lore. Every aspect of the experiment had been carefully vetted to pull test subjects from a standard cross section of ages, occupations, and education levels.

In other words, these were not sadistic savages — these were people just like you and me.

A 2002 analysis of the original study confirms the findings.

What could possibly lead to this behavior?

Milgram concluded it’s our deep-seated sense of duty to authority. We’re trained from childhood to respect and trust authority figures (such as scientists in lab coats), and the obedience that comes with it stays with us throughout our lives.

Even when we feel something may not be quite right.

Cashing in with Authority
What Milgram wanted to know was how far the Teachers would go when told to continue to deliver those shocks, since they thought they really were.

All Your Deposits Belong to Me
A television reporter dresses up in a security guard’s uniform and sets up in front of a Las Vegas bank. He sticks a sign on the ATM embellished with a big gold badge and the following message:

“OUT OF ORDER — GIVE DEPOSITS TO GUARD ON DUTY.”
Bank customers start showing up. Each time, the fake guard smiles and asks if the customer wants to make a deposit or withdrawal.

This whole scenario is ridiculous, right? No bank would conduct business this way.

And yet, customer after customer handed over cash, checks, Social Security numbers, credit cards, account numbers, PIN codes… you name it. Out of 10 people, only one hesitated, but even he complied seconds later.

When the reporter revealed the deception and asked the flabbergasted
victims why they handed him money and private information,
they all gave pretty much the same answer:

“Because of the uniform. Because of the sign.”

In other words, they complied because he was perceived as authoritative
and therefore, trustworthy.

Does authority have anything to do with people trusting you when money is involved?

You bet.

Here’s another crazy example of our obedience to
authority that copywriter Dean Rieck loves to tell.

Why?

Neuroscience reveals the somewhat frightening answer. Brain scans show that the decision-making parts of our brains often shut down when we encounter authoritative advice or direction.

That’s part of what makes authority so powerful. And why authority
carries great responsibility.

When you’re looking to influence people and build a powerful business online, authority is the way to go. People respect other people who have authority, expertise, and impressive credentials just like they respect people in lab coats and police uniforms.

And they respect authority even more when you demonstrate it rather than simply claim it. More on that in a minute.

Simply put, authority makes you more important in the eyes of others… someone who should be listened to and treated better. And it’s not just people who operate this way.

So… people respond to and follow important people more than others. And Google ranks important pages and sites higher than others.

We may be on to something with this authority thing.

If you’ve been around the online marketing scene for a while, you may be familiar with the paradox of search engine optimization (SEO). SEO is the art and science of ranking high in the search engines (mostly Google) for the words people are using to find what you have to offer.

It boils down to this:

If people think you’re important, so will Google.

This perplexes many webmasters and online marketers, since they wonder how people will consider them important when people use search engines to find things online in the first place. How are you important if you’re invisible in the search engines to start with?

And how does Google know people think you’re important anyway?

For one, they know because people link to you, and Google follows those links to index and rank web pages.

And thanks to services such as the Google Toolbar, Analytics, Feedburner, Google Reader, Gmail and others that keep you logged-in to your Google account, the Big G has an enormous amount of usage data that shows what people actually spend time doing online.

So, there’s that. But how do you kick it off?

All Your Deposits Belong to Me

In order to get the power to influence or command thought, opinion, or behavior online, you need to become an authority that others cite (link to) in their online content. Which means, of course, you need a content-rich website that demonstrates your authority in the first place.

Your content actually demonstrates your expertise, compared with a website or bio page that claims expertise. This is a crucial distinction, because it truly levels the playing field and allows anyone to come along and build authority that outpaces even recognized
and credentialed experts in a particular niche or field.

How is this possible? Well, it’s due to the one essential truth about how both people and Google perceive authority:

What other people say about you is more important than what you say about yourself.

Authority is all about perception.

Perceived authority can outrank actual authority, because both the general population and the most powerful search engine on the planet look to what others “vote” to be the most relevant expertise for any given topic, rather then some other method that might give a different result.

To get people to link to you and generally pay attention in the first place, you have to start thinking about authority in a different sense. Luckily, any dictionary will get you on the right path with the other definition of authority.

au·thor·i·ty noun: [1] A citation (e.g. from a book) used in defense or support; [2] the source from which the citation is drawn; [3] an individual cited or appealed to as an expert.

Let me give you an example.

Let’s say Professor X is the world’s foremost authority on green widgets. This guy really knows his stuff when it comes to green widgets, and he’s got the PhD in green widgetology to prove it. He’s also published several scholarly papers on the topic of green widgets, but unfortunately those demonstrations are deemed too valuable to publish freely online.

Bad move, Professor X.

Then there’s Ned Newbie. Ned is passionate about green widgets, even though he didn’t quite make it to graduate school. Ned is teaching himself everything there is to know about green widgets by doing his own research and reading everything he can get his hands on.

The scholarly journals won’t touch Ned with a 10-foot pole, but that’s okay… Ned decides to blog about green widgets and share what he’s learned so far with anyone who’s interested. It doesn’t matter that Ned doesn’t know as much about green widgets as Professor X (yet), because Ned figures his own understanding of the topic will increase by having to transform his research into content that can be viewed across the planet.

Ned’s absolutely right. And here’s the good part… whenever someone
needs to cite (link to) a web page when mentioning green widgets,
they link to Ned.

Two years later, Brad Pitt confesses a fascination for green widgets during a Barbara Walters’ interview. Suddenly, everyone is hot to find out more about green widgets. Search traffic surges, reporters are digging for sources… it’s downright green widget mania.
Who will people find? Who will the media contact?

The last thing I want you to think is that following rules is the way to succeed. In fact, breaking a few of the “rules” people try to dictate to you might be the smartest thing you ever do.

The title of this report has a double meaning. The first way to look at it is authority rules… as in it kicks ass and can’t be beat when it comes to publishing and marketing online.

And that’s the truth.

But when it comes to building authority sites or blogs (same difference,
really, given Google’s preference for constantly-updated content), some things are fairly critical. The following ten elements of online authority are important enough to be considered rules that should be followed, not broken.

That’s right… it’ll be Ned. Sorry, Professor X.

The key to becoming an authority in any area is to learn all you can, and share all you can. Then you make money by selling something related to your authority, and even by re-packaging the content you’ve already created.

As you might have guessed, there are ways to go about this that provide better results than other approaches (especially in the competitive niches that don’t need Brad Pitt to drive traffic). Let’s get into the elements that result in authoritative websites that work.

Let’s take a look at each:

The winning difference has been a critical concept way before the web came along. And it’s been called a lot of different things over time in various contexts: a unique selling proposition; your position in people’s minds; your purple cow… and on and on.

Essentially, it’s what makes your story stick.

There are a lot of ways to differentiate yourself, but no matter how you do it, it’s absolutely essential to building an authority website. In many ways, it’s how unique your content is that sets you apart, and that’s why the winning difference is rule number one… and why all of the following rules support it one way or another.

How do I Rank Higher in Google?

When advertising on via the Internet you need to compete against
other websites. What you're attempting is to get your companies
website to rank higher in the search engines than your competitors
website.

Too often a new Maryland Internet advertising client will insist
that the consultant make the existing corporate website improve
in ranking with out having to change, edit or alter the existing
website.

Balancing Paid and Organic Search Engine Listings

Does your company’s website really need to be listed in both the organic or “natural” search results as well as the paid “sponsored” results? The answer is a most definite “yes”. After talking to a lot of other search engine marketing experts, we all tend to agree that a combined approach–one that relies on both organic search engine rankings and paid listings works best.

Higher click-thru ratios
According to recent research, (I will quote and talk about the research in the presentation), websites that are listed at the top of the organic search results and the paid listings will triple their click-thru ratio. Three times more people will visit your website if it is listed in both places because there is a “second opinion effect”. Searchers see both listings and are encouraged by the fact that a website is listed in both the organic listings and the paid listings.

Greater penetration of search results
By optimizing your website’s content to rank well in the organic search results, your website can be found for many keyword phrases and combinations of keywords. Good organic search engine rankings typically take months to achieve, and are fairly easy to maintain on an ongoing basis.
