President Obama Stops SOPA Piracy Bill

“The growing anti-SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) support that has swept through the gaming and Internet community found a very big ally today. With websites like Reddit and Wikipedia and gaming organizations like Major League Gaming prepared for a blackout on January 18th – the same day that the House Judiciary Committee hearing on HR 3261was scheduled in Washington, D.C. – President Barack Obama has stepped in and said he would not support the bill.
SOPA has been delayed, for now. The House has agreed to revisit the issue next month, but they now know the White House will veto any bill that’s not more narrowly focused.
Much to the chagrin of Hollywood, the Entertainment Software Association (which has been a backer of the bill from early on), and Internet domain company GoDaddy.com (which lost many accounts as a result of its support for the bill); SOPA has been shelved. The Motion Picture Association of America, one of the bill’s largest sponsors, is expected to regroup.”

n a strong and popular political move, President Barack Obama has stepped in to state that he refuses to support the controversial SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act). This has led to a delay on the matter, with Congress seeking to revisit the issue in a month. They will have meetings with full awareness that the White House will veto anything that is not more narrowly focused. Obama’s move has upset powerful executives in Hollywood and also the Entertainment Software Association. One of the biggest sponsors of the bill, the Motion Picture Association of America, is expected to regroup and attack the issue again very soon. Part of the reason that the Obama Administration stepped forward on the matter is because of the uproar that spread across the Internet this week. Several large websites blacked themselves out in protest, including Wikipedia, Reddit and other major sites. YourBlackWorld.com also blacked out to heighten awareness about the bill, being one of a small number of black news organizations to do so.
“The voice of the Internet community has been heard,” said California Congressman Darrell Issa. “Much more education for members of Congress about the workings of the Internet is essential if anti-piracy legislation is to be workable and achieve broad appeal.”
The threat has not ended with SOPA. Protect IP (the Enforcing and Protecting American Rights Against Sites Intent on Theft and Exploitation Act) is another bill that goes before the Senate on January 24th. Both bills claim to combat online piracy by preventing major search engines like Google and Yahoo from linking to websites that have content that appears to be in violation of US copyright laws.
“Any provision covering Internet intermediaries such as online advertising networks, payment processors, or search engines must be transparent and designed to prevent overly broad private rights of action that could encourage unjustified litigation that could discourage startup businesses and innovative firms from growing,” said The White House. “We expect and encourage all private parties, including both content creators and Internet platform providers working together, to adopt voluntary measures and best practices to reduce online piracy.”

Google's new update will deliver fresher content that's more relevant to searchers

Google is basing their latest update, announced Thursday Nov. 3, on the premise that when you search for something that’s relevant today, you won’t get results for something from the 90s, 80s or even earlier. Google’s update to its basic search algorithm will land up-to-date results on top instead of stale, old content you really weren’t searching for.
The recent changes are expected to impact about 35% of searches on Google.
“Given the incredibly fast pace at which information moves in today’s world, the most recent information can be from the last week, day or even minute, and depending on the search terms, the algorithm needs to be able to figure out if a result from a week ago about a TV show is recent, or if a result from a week ago about breaking news is too old,” Google posted on its official blog Nov. 3.
Google said recent changes with the latest Google update will mostly affect searches on recent events or hot topics, regularly occurring events and frequent updates. For example, when you search for scores or information on new jobs available, you’ll get the latest information instead of scores or new jobs from even last week or last month.
Now, the changes aren’t expected to make a difference too many searches. Google said searches such as “fast tomato sauce” recipe certainly will deliver results that may be a few months or even a few years ago.
