Welcome to the first Weekly Update of May. We have some very exciting news to tell you. We are running a fabulous competition which will end on May 31st and involves visiting a free entry museum or art gallery in your area and blogging about it (just in time for the May Day Bank Holiday). We have visited both the Riverside Transport Museum (link) and Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery (link) in Glasgow if you need some inspiration. Your blogs don’t have to be long they just need to be informative and include at least one photograph.

We will choose 2 winners who will win a scrumptious Scottish Hamper courtesy of Scottish Hampers. Details of the type of hamper up for grabs can be found at http://www.scottishhampers.co.uk/hamper/wee-yin.html
Regional Reporters Required

Welcome to our last Weekly Update for January. There are a few changes to the site for tourism providers which we have detailed below in the Tourism Provider Section. We are also looking for “Regional Reporters” to join us in promoting Scotland, you do not need to be a tourism provider for the role. More information below in the changes to the site section.

Last weekend weekend we visited the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. We have featured our blog as this week’s feature. If you have visited the museum we would also love to here of your experience and maybe see some of your images in the gallery.

Changes to the Site

Search Scotland has grown substantially in the last year and as a result we have to change the system of how the site and tourist provider promotion is managed. We are now recruiting “Regional Reporters” to manage whats going on in different areas of Scotland and as a result making us more informative to tourists and accessible to tourism providers. This has resulted in us having to charge for all listings on the site however we are confident that the service provided will be improved and all adverts will work better for each individual.
Full Story HERE

Please note it is still free to add events, photographs and articles about your area to the site although editorial style articles about your services will be chargeable. Contact us for more information.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the above please do not hesitate to CONTACT US.

Our main site Administrator, Catriona, will be away on Maternity leave starting Monday 6th of February for 9 months. The main site contact after this date will be Helmut Watterott.
This Weeks Spotlight is...

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum - Our Visit
On Sunday 22nd January we attended the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery in Glasgow. I had attended the museum once before it was refurbished and was excited to see how it looked now after all the positive comments I had heard from friends and family. As per my previous blogs, I took the family with to make sense of how well the museum caters for children as well as adults, and I must say I wasn't disappointed.

There was an ACDC exhibit on but due to time constraints, we were unable to visit although we did see very many happy fans of the band leave the show afterwards so I would assume it was entertaining. If you happened to visit the exhibit, I would love to know how it went.

The facilities on site are fantastic and unlike a few other old buildings, there is proper provision for disabled people and parents with prams with a lift system in place and nice open corridors in which to move comfortably. There are also plenty of toilets which with me being heavily pregnant and going out with a newly toilet trained toddler, really took advantage of. It sounds really trivial, but those who have children at this stage will understand the planning ahead required when out and about.

The exhibits themselves were well presented and the animals were a real treat for the children, and not just mine. The area was packed with excited children reciting the names of the animals they recognised. There are also touch screens throughout the exhibits which help children get involved through games, songs and facts of what they are looking at. The only issue was trying to get them away from it. I am not a fan of taxidermy at the best of times and was personally a little freaked out there so if you are little sensitive I would suggest you prepare yourself. Other than that I had no problems.

The highlight for me and my partner was the exhibition of paintings by the famous Glasgow Boys. I was in awe of the talent that these men processed and it showed a real insight to life in Scotland in the late 19th and early 20th century. There are many other works of art on display through the rest of the museum from the Renaissance Style to Modern. No matter your style, there is something for you. The museum is free to visit and I love that everyone has access to these masterpieces.

As you would expect, there were lots of exhibits based on either Glasgow specific or Scottish History. I loved the mention of James Watt, without whom we may have never had the industrial revolution. He most famously improved the steam engine. I also mulled around the Robert Burns section for a while since it was close to Burn Night.

I would definitely recommend a visit to the Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery whether you are taking the family or going on your own. It will have something for you and the best part is that its free!

Welcome to our weekly update this Friday the 13th

To keep in with the theme of the day we have decided to spotlight Scottish Myths and Legends. We hope that enjoy reading about them and if you know of any other monsters or ghost stories, we would love to hear about them.

This Weeks Spotlight is.....

Scottish Myths and Legends
Loch Ness Monster (Nessie):
The Loch Ness Monster is a cryptid that is reputed to inhabit Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. It is similar to other supposed lake monsters in Scotland and elsewhere, though its description varies from one account to the next. Popular interest and belief in the animal has varied since it was brought to the world's attention in 1933. Evidence of its existence is anecdotal, with minimal and much-disputed photographic material and sonar readings.

The most common speculation among believers is that the creature represents a line of long-surviving plesiosaurs. The scientific community regards the Loch Ness Monster as a modern-day myth, and explains sightings as a mix of hoaxes and wishful thinking. Despite this, it remains one of the most famous examples of cryptozoology. The legendary monster has been affectionately referred to by the nickname Nessie since the 1950s.

Kelpies, Celtic folklore and mythological creature:
The kelpie is a supernatural water horse from Celtic folklore that is believed to haunt the rivers and lochs of Scotland and Ireland; the name may be from Scottish Gaelic cailpeach or colpach "heifer, colt".

The horse's appearance is strong, powerful, and breathtaking. Its hide was supposed to be black (though in some stories it was white), and will appear to be a lost pony, but can be identified by its constantly dripping mane. Its skin is like that of a seal, smooth but is as cold as death when touched. Water horses are known to transform into beautiful women to lure men into their traps. It is understood that the nostril of the horse is what creates the illusion of grandeur. The water horse creates illusions to keep itself hidden, keeping only its eye above water to scout the surface, much like the illusion of a fish's pupil. It is wise to keep away from them.

The water horse is a common form of the kelpie, said to lure humans, especially children, into the water to drown and eat them. It performs this act by encouraging children to ride on its back. Once its victims fall into its trap, the kelpie's skin becomes adhesive and it bears them into the river, dragging them to the bottom of the water and devouring them—except the heart or liver.
Wolf of Badenoch:
The fearsome “Wolf of Badenoch”, with Lochindord and its castle.

The Wolf was the son of King Robert II; the time was the close of the fourteenth century. He was said to be huge in stature with a florid complexion and jet black beard and held the whole of Moray in fear. He was given the lordship of Badenoch and the castle of Lochindorb, whose ruins today sit sinisterly on an island in the middle of Lochindorb itself – a short drive from Findhorn. Legend has it that an invitation to the castle inevitably meant the invitee was never seen again – probably committed to the Water Pit Vault.
Festive Greetings and a happy new year!

We hope that you all had a fantastic Christmas and we wish you all a very Happy New Year. We would firstly like to thank you all for your support so far and we hope that it may continue through 2012 and beyond. Many exciting things are coming up in the new year and to start the year off we will be having an interview with the Scottish Tourism Minister, Mr Fergus Ewing. If you have any questions for the minister we would love to hear them. All questions need to be in by the 20th of January.

Please note that our Winter 2011 / 12 E-Magazine has had to be postponed until the end of January. We apologise for this delay.

This Weeks Spotlight is.....
Hogmanay
Hogmanay is one of the biggest celebrations in the Scottish Calendar and is the Scots word for the New Year celebrations. It carries many traditions like “First Footing” in which similarly to Halloween, after the bells people go up and down the streets entering other peoples houses to bring them luck. However it is only deemed good luck if it is someone with dark hair who enters your home and it was very much the opposite if someone fair enters your house first. It is also bad luck to “first foot” your own house. In days gone by this would often take up a whole day and therefore in Scotland, the 2nd of January is also a Bank Holiday and is included in the Hogmanay Celebrations.

Across the world a very famous Scottish song has become synonymous with New Year celebrations. Auld Lang Syne was written by our Bard, Robert Burns and expresses everything we want our New Year to be and bringing people together.

Auld Lang Syne (short version):

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne!

Chorus.-For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We'll take a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

Happy New Year!
This Weeks Spotlight is.....

4 x 4 Off Road Driving Scotland
In honour of our winning photograph, a 4x4 vehicle, we would love to highlight this exhilarating way of enjoying Scotland.

Scotland offers the perfect environment for off-roading and 4x4 off-road driving. The terrain changes rapidly from rolling hills to bog land. The tracks can be slippery and consist of forests, rocks, rivers, mud, grass and everything in between. 4x4 off-roading in Scotland is truly a mighty challenge.

The unpredictable weather Scotland is so famous for also adds to the variety of off-roading experiences you can have in Scotland.

The majority of 4x4 tracks in Scotland are rural which means that the country-side and scenery on a 4x4 trip will be spectacular. You will most likely also see much Scottish wildlife and have a real Scottish Safari.

Happy St Andrews Day!

What better way to celebrate Scotland’s Patron Saint than to boast about everything great about Scotland. Earlier on today we had a St Andrews Day inspired tweeting hour which saw us highlighting what we love about Scotland and what we are particularly proud of. You can still join the discussion by logging into Twitter and using the #FabulouslyScotland tag. We have a list below of what we had to say and would love to see your answers on Twitter too.

What we love about Scotland:
Being based in Greenock, we love Oor boy James Watt, the famous Scottish Inventor without whom we may have never had the Industrial revolution. He is most famous for innovating and improving the Steam Engine. You can read more about Greenock’s most famous son HERE

We are very proud to call Scotland the “Home of Golf” with a history of the sport dating as far back as the 1400’s. We may not all be keen golfers but it is a great feeling knowing that Scotland is a “pilgrimage” to many who are. To read more about Golf in Scotland see our Golf Featurette

We love Bothwell Castle, it was hard to pick a favourite castle but the dramatic history of Bothwell and its powerful stance on the landscape ,even as a ruin, is truly magnificent. To read more please click HERE

We love that come rain or shine, Scotland caters for a great range of outdoor pursuits. Our favourite is Quad biking. It is a fantastic way of getting up and close with Scotland’s countryside whilst experiencing a real adrenaline rush. If you are keen to give quad biking a go please click HERE

It wouldn’t be St Andrews Day without a mention of our Bard, Robert Burns. Not only was he a great poet but he was a social thinker beyond his time. To learn more about Burns a visit to the newly refurbished Robert Burns Birthplace Museum is a must. For further details please click HERE

They are only a selection of our Scottish Passions. To see more please visit the above mentioned Twitter Tag and we would love to see your entries too!

Hope you enjoy the rest of your day

This Weeks Spotlight is.....
AYRSHIRE
The home county of Burns is a truly beautiful place to visit. It is no wonder why Scotland’s most famous son was inspired there. The scenery of the area is really diverse with both rolling hills and farmland to seascapes. It also just so happens that the Isle of Arran falls under the Jurisdiction and is described by many as “Scotland in Miniature” for its hills, glens, wildlife, castle, distillery and coastline.

We have links below to our favourite and must see locations in Ayrshire along with up and coming events in the county and a short piece on Robert Burns. We hope that you take the opportunity to go through them and put Ayrshire on your wishlist of places to see and things to do in Scotland.

They are a great opportunity for kids (and grown ups) to get dressed up and pretend to be someone else for the evening. We would love to see your Halloween pictures in our Gallery. We have added pics of our children to get the ball rolling. If you are attending a Halloween event we would love to know how it went, your opinions and blogs are very much welcome on the site.
The theme was inspired from Autumn being my own preferred season for taking photographs and being out and about in the fabulous Scottish countryside. Scotland’s most iconic wildlife also flourish in the Autumn with the likes of the Red Deer Rut.

This month we are showcasing the Island of Skye in particular as being a wonderful location for photography. It was inspired by a trip my grandfather took there many years ago. He still raves about it today. We are also very honoured to be able to include a wonderful article by a local Skye photographer, Andrew Woodhouse called “A Photograph of Skye... everyday” It sums up the challenges and magic the island has to offer a photographer.

WIN A CAMERA
We also have a fabulous photography competition. The prize up for grabs is a Panasonic Lumix S1 camera:
Upload your pics to the Autumn Photography 2011 gallery and get your friends and family to vote for you. The winner will be chosen dependant on the number of votes his or her photograph has. More information about the competition is in the magazine.
Latest Blogs
We are very happy to have a blog on the site by Mrs Laurence Northcote. It gives a great insight into why why Scotland is so special and why it is always important to have a camera at the ready.

AN OPEN WINDOW FOR THE DISCOVERY OF A COUNTRY
This article relates of my feelings when travelling in the country with a camera and discussing with the locals. I have already visited 56 countries and 12 states in the USA. I currently live in the Highlands of Scotland. Scotland is made of land, lakes and mountains, and, in between, the Great Glen. The Great Glen relays the Atlantic to the North Sea. So, in one day we have different landscapes to photograph for our memories, and I am still curious to discover what is around my little village, Fort Augustus.
SearchScotland.Org Update 18 October 2011 - WIN A CAMERA and read our Autumn e-mag

Welcome to our weekly update this Tuesday and we have much to tell you. Firstly after the success of our first e magazine - Summer 2011, we are delighted to welcome you to our second edition - Autumn 2011. The theme of the magazine this quarter is Photography in Scotland.
Please note that the information is mainly from a beginners perspective just in case we get into a bit of trouble from all the photography gurus out there.

Please download and view the Autumn Issue HERE
Read the article HERE

Competition Gallery CLICK HERE
