Ever since my mom gave me my great uncle's WWII steamer trunk I've had a thing for this vintage travel vessel. I'm an organization freak and I love the idea of traveling with all these great compartments in which to neatly store my stuff. July 20 marks the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11’s first lunar landing and to commemorate this historical event Louis Vuitton has created a custom-order “Malle Mars” trunk designed with a trip to Mars in mind. The egg-like aerodynamic trunk, opens up to unveil compartments for all kinds of space necessities — from tool and pharmaceuticals drawers to shelves for dishware and even a folding chair to take in the views of Earth. Who will buy this? I'd like to know. I'm pretty certain it won't fit in the overhead compartment. Can you imagine seeing this in baggage claim? (via WWD)

outfit inspired by laudree french macaroons

In honor of Bastille Day which takes place on July 14th we take inspiration from one of our favorite Parisian destinations, Ladurée the patisserie made famous by its delectable macaroons. The luscious crisp little cakes are filled with smooth creamy centers with flavors like jasmin mango, bergamot, caramel with salted butter, red fruits and orange blossom just to name a few. The colors of these little treats are worthy of a trend story touting summer’s pastel infused fashions, many of which are marked down to make room for fall arrivals. So indulge in a sweet treat whether it be a macaroon or pastel Elizabeth and James blouse which you can pair with white jeans. Or how about these pretty Maloles flats, they’ll look charming with a flittery silk summer dress. Even everyday basics like skinny jeans or classic aviators will look perfectly lovely for a quick jaunt to the patisserie for a box of what else? Pastel colored macaroons!

Scarlett Johansson's Mango ads are out and, unsurprisingly, she plays the sexy blond bombshell well. Shot by famed photographer Mario Sorrenti in Los Angeles, she models skintight skirts, heels and leopard prints. I'm in the market for a faux fur leopard print jacket this season and perhaps this is it. The actress and Dolce & Gabbana cosmetics front women replaced Penelope Cruz for the Fall 2009 ad campaign. I have a new way to pass train time between Castro and Powell - Net-A-Porter.com launched Net-App on the Apple App store. The new App allows users to browse the latest fashion, email friends about items and, of course, shop. Best of all, I can now read the Wednesday magazine online - one of my favorite fashion reads. If you are in London this evening the official launch with Roland Mouret and Natalie Massenet will take place at the Apple Store, Regent Street at 7PM.

alexander wang shoes and accessories for fall 2009

Alexander Wang is on a roll. A Parsons dropout he launched his full women's collection in 2007, followed by a diffusion line of gorgeous cotton tees and tanks, a footwear and accessories line and a men's collection set to debut this month. He won the CFDA/Fashion Fund Award in 2008, an honor accompanied by a $20,000 award to expand his business. I'm a fan of most of what he turns out - but even when it comes to the few things I don't like, I have to respect his ingenuity. His pieces are different from the what's out there and I expect very big things from him in the future. Case in point: the fall 2009 shoes and accessories collection. Gorgeous - and different. I love all of it but I really love the sexy two-toned clear heels with the leather tip. I'm still pining over the cross-body bag from spring so it is good to know I have multiple options to redeem myself this fall. The line will hit major retailers soon. (via Nitro:licious)

I love and am continually inspired by Carine Roitfeld's edgy style so I read with great interest that Joseph has created a private label collection inspired by the Parisian Vogue editor. The London based retailer describes the collection as "not classics, but fashion for everyday." Pieces in the fall collection include a leopard-print rabbit-fur car coat (LOVE), a chocolate leather bomber jacket with fox-fur lining, a merino sheepskin tunic dress and a boyish, gray Lurex tweed car coat, all styled with pieces such as leather leggings and cropped jodhpurs. The collection will be priced 30 to 40 percent lower and available at Joseph stores worldwide, select Bloomindales and Ron Herman in Los Angeles. (WWD via Refinery29)

San Francisco ranks ninth in a recent study judging stylish cities worldwide. Slightly more stylish than Barcelona and falling just behind Madrid, the city was chosen because it is home to dozens of important industrial design firms that have created many products millions use --and admire-- every day. Boo! That's embarrassing and decidingly un-stylish. What gives?

The 2009 Anholt-GfK Roper City Brands Index, released on June 16, surveyed 10,000 people from 20 countries in April of this year. Cities were judged on lifestyle, buzz, multiculturalism, cultural life and attractiveness. Respondents were asked to rank 50 cities on such varied subjects as climate, physical attractiveness, restaurants and nightlife. (via Forbes)

jimmy choo for hunter boots

There's been much fashion media ado about the Jimmy Choo for Hunter Boots collaboration. After they were seen on celebrities like Rachel Bilson and Charlize Theron, the croc-embossed boot inspired a 4000 deep waiting list. A very limited range of sizes (two to be exact) are still available at Saks.com for $395 and a February 2010 ship date. No thank you! First, waiting lists are so last century and secondly, why bother? The Hunter classic (above) is exactly the same except for the croc. In this case, I believe the original is still the best. Hunter wellies ruled at Glastonbury last week despite the clear skies. Check out the fashion from the festival at Style.com

I'm not a big fan of Marc Jacobs but can't help love his kooky ads. Although the advertisements have been a fixture of fashion magazines for nearly ten years, they remain fresh because of a growing list of interesting subjects doing wacky things or nothing at all. This unique longevity is the result of the friendship between the designer and Bavarian-born photographer Juergen Teller, a creative collaboration now compiled in the 576 pages of "Marc Jacobs Advertising 1998-2009" (Steidl). Over the years the campaign has featured Michael Stipe, Sofia Coppola, Winona Ryder, Rufus Wainwright, Victoria Beckham and many more. The ad campaign, Madonna's second for the luxury design house, will be officially released in August. This is pretty neutral for Madonna - I'm curious what she will bring for the six other spots.

A friend on Facebook wrote tonight "RIP Michael Jackson. He's the first person the media actually killed." True, the media has been unkind to Jackson in recent years - justly or unjustly. The fashion media was a bit more kind - if only to acknowledge during the Eighties and into the Nineties, Michael Jackson was as much a trendsetter for fashion as he was for music. There’s the red leather motorcycle jacket he rocked in the “Beat It” video; the white ankle socks, black fedora and black loafers he wore when he moonwalked; the military-style jacket and aviator sunglasses he toured in during the “Thriller” era; the white V-neck T-shirt that he always eventually stripped down to onstage, and finally, there was that glove, first worn during a performance of “Billie Jean” during a television special in 1983. More than two decades later, The King of Pop’s style endures. For spring 2009, Balmain sent a Jackson-esque military jacket down the runway. According to WWD, from which this blog entry was adapted, Jackson hits like “Thriller” and “PYT (Pretty Young Thing)” are soundtrack staples for runway shows even still. R.I.P. WWD
