Scare Prank

The prank featured in this video takes me back to my childhood, as my grandfather and uncle could always be counted on for scaring the hell out of me. I can recall standing on the porch before sunup and having blankets dropped off the roof onto my head; being told to retrieve items from a dark bedroom (I was too little to reach the light switch), only to be startled half-to-death once inside the room; watching an ominous figure (my grandfather) creep through the yard, holding a lantern, while blowing on a creepy, wild call, etc., all before the age of five!

Admittedly, I looked forward to our visits with the family because a part of me couldn’t wait to see what they were going to scare me with next. Based on my childhood (and my love of Halloween), it’s probably a good thing I don’t have kids, since they would undoubtedly encounter the type of parenting found in this clip. In the video, two brothers are huddled together after watching a horror movie, meanwhile, their dad is preparing to take full advantage of the situation.

Just wanted to wish everyone a happy and safe 4th! Today always represents the peak of summer and the impending crawl to fall, and in about two weeks the stores should be gearing up for Christmas! Seriously though, take time to enjoy your day and celebrate what really matters (spending time with loved ones). And, as the dog days of summer hit, remember Halloween is just a click away at SOS.

Mischievous Ghost

However, if the objects in the film are being moved by a ghost, then the spirit definitely has a good sense of humor as well as timing. The first signs of activity don’t begin until the one minute mark.

Amazing Pumpkin Carving

After using a time-lapse technique for creating the zombie prop building segment in two of my Halloween Haunter’s Reality videos, I’ve become of a fan of the medium as it relates to Halloween projects. Time-lapse especially lends itself well to the art of carving pumpkins. Though I’m usually partial to traditional jack-o-lanterns with creepy or spooky faces, the carving by EclecticAsylumArt in this video is absolutely phenomenal!

While we have some beautiful sunsets here in New Mexico, I’ve never witnessed one with a Halloween theme. You gotta love the placement of the “candle” in this image. Wouldn’t it be awesome if all clouds were shaped like jack-o-lanterns? That might be too much to ask for the entire year, but maybe Mother Nature could bend the rules a little on October 31st. Next thing you know, I’ll be wishing it could rain glow sticks – you know the ones that you shake and snap… hmm, that’s a good idea!

Ghostly Art 2

Lately, I’ve found myself frequently on the lookout for creative imagery featuring ghosts wandering through cemeteries and desolate locations. As strange as it may sound, after spending many hours collecting EVPs amidst acres of headstones, I’ve come to see cemeteries in a fascinating light. While I respect the somberness of such locations as well as the vast array of life experiences modestly represented by each marker, I can also see their potential for helping us to recognize the transcendence of consciousness from the physical shell – if we open our minds and look for it.

Canned Jack-O-Lantern

Okay, file this one under disgusting, but I couldn’t resist. I can’t figure out how this idea escaped me during my eighteen-day-stint of creating jack-o-lanterns; it could have had something to do with my vegetarian ways blinding me to the potential of sculpting spicy ham. Remember, back in the day, when the cans featured built-in keys for convenient opening? As a kid, the key was the best part of the Spam experience.

Halloween Thriller

If you were a child of the 80’s (and especially if you loved Halloween or horror), no doubt, Michael Jackson’s Thriller had an enormous impact on you. Anytime I hear the title track from the album, I’m immediately taken back to Friday night skating parties at our local roller rink: the smell of greasy pizza, the sound of Donkey Kong Jr devouring quarters, and MJ and his zombies dancing it out on the big projection screen at the end of the rink.

In honor of Michael and the influence both he and Vincent Price had on me through that song, here’s a great rendition I found on You Tube. It features college students performing the Thriller Dance at their 2007 Halloween Ball.

Halloween & Paranormal Chat Box

For the time being, I’ve added a chat box to the bottom of the home page. I thought it would be a cool addition for like-minded visitors to connect with one another about Halloween, the paranormal or whatever. I’ll leave it up through Halloween and see what the response is like. If you guys enjoy it, then I’ll keep it as a permanent feature and move it into its own section of the site.

If you’re going to participate, there’s only two things I ask – please respect one another and never share personal information. I won’t be online to constantly moderate the conversations and can’t be responsible for any interactions, but if anyone witnesses things getting out of control, just drop me a line.

A Halloween KISS

While I enjoy elaborate yard haunt setups just as much as the next home haunter, every once in a while I need a Halloween KISS (keep it simple stupid) to help me find my balance. It’s way too easy to get caught up in trying to make each haunt more elaborate than the previous outing, as the stress builds the fun can be completely sucked out of the whole project.

A simple image of a jack-o-lantern or two always reminds me you can never go wrong with the classic, basic Halloween icons. And, it helps to keep things in perspective; for example: if this year’s mache props happen to turn out like crap – oh well!
