There’s many ways to prevent this, and we’ll also offer a PDF link at the bottom of this post that will give you some more tips on how to prevent this type of accident from happening. But in regards to television sets (or any large item/appliance) – it’s extremely dangerous to be place them up high, where it could be knocked over and possibly harm your child. One idea to prevent this from happening is to utilize wall brackets for TVs – so that they can’t be moved or tipped over. There are also baby proofing cables and other similar products that will connect to your TV (or chair, stool, or any large item) to prevent it from falling down or moved. You should also make sure there are no cords accessible to children. They can be a strangulation hazard, as well as an electrical danger, but they can also be tugged and the TV could be yanked out of place or topple over.

What’s happening is that the stroller’s hinge is dangerous (fingertip amputation and cuts/laceration possibility) – mostly when the user is folding or unfolding the stroller. This is just like the Maclaren stroller recall. There has been a report of a child fracturing their finger due to this hinge.

The recall affects these models: Ruby, Onyx and Topax and they were sold between August 2009 and November 2009.

What should you do? According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled strollers and contact Regal Lager to receive a free hinge cover retrofit kit. Contact information below:

The Safety 1st Acella Sport Travel System is a great product that combines safety, agility and design. At the same time it does not demand a big budget. It offers an inexpensive, lightweight solution with some nice handy features. It is great for first time moms and moms who have a lot of moving around to do.

The Acella stroller has three wheels with only one front swivel lock wheel. The wheels are large as well and the frames are made of aluminum which makes the Acella really lightweight. The system also offers rear foot brakes. The detachable seat offers different reclining positions. All these together make the Acella system great for handling, easy to move about and let it give a very smooth ride. That is just ideal for a stroll or a jog and for congested places like shopping malls. The systems installs in minutes and folds up easily with one hand in standing position.

It has three drink holders and a cell phone pocket in a parent trolley at the back and an easily accessible basket for larger items. It has a well sized infant tray with a drink holder as well. The seat has a tangle free five-point harness, which has infinite adjustment possibilities against the usual restricted preset adjustments of other brands. Simply turn the two knobs at the rear of the seat to adjust the height to suit your infant, placing the shoulder straps at just the right height whether front faced or rear faced. So every time you need to adjust the height, you do not need to take out the seat. Great for a growing child! Advanced side impact protection offers extra protection. This is very useful, especially in the absence of side impact air bags. The Versa-tether by Britax can be used even in a rear facing position.

The seat can be installed front faced or rear faced either by seat belt or LATCH. Installation is easy and the push button releases make removing very convenient. Once installed it doesn’t budge at all. If you have any problems working out the installation just refer to the online video at the Britax website. The seat has a capacity to fit in infants from 5 to 35 pounds rear facing, while front facing it can fit infants of 20 to 65 pounds. So generally it lasts your baby till 5 to 6 yrs, which is a good utility life.

The feel of the seat is very plush and the padding and fabric very cushy. It prevents the baby from sweating. Plus the cover can be removed and reinstalled very easily. This makes it great for washing and seat covers do need periodic washing as infants have a tendency of scrubbing in food. The seat is accommodated with adjustable rear and forward facing recline, body pillows and a quick-adjust headrest. The wider head wings support the head of a nodding baby nicely and prevent it from flopping which is an issue with other seats. The wings move along with the harness and you do not need to worry about the shoulder straps being at par with the wings every time you move the harness. The shoulder belts are wide and do not get folded every time you use it. They are extra padded for added comfort. Webbing loads are smartly distributed by the patented HUGS system. This also prevents webbing edge loads accumulating on the baby’s neck in the case of a collision. The base of the seat is smaller than most other seats and so it takes up less space in the car.

Overall the Britax Boulevard CS Convertible Car Seat is one of the best of its kind in terms of safety, comfort and is a great buy. I definitely recommend this car seat!

We know of at least seven babies who have suffocated in baby slings over the past 11 years.  The cause of other deaths in slings were undetermined or may have been misclassified as SIDS.  Additionally, we have reports of 37 infants who have been seriously injured in incidents with slings over the same time period.  Those injuries include skull fractures, broken bones, and serious bruises.

It’s also a good idea to check online about product recalls – because although it’s standard practice for a store to send back any products that are on their shelves that have been recalled, it’s not ALWAYS done.  So it’s good to know ahead of time whether a product has been recalled so you can check the manufacture date to make sure you’re not buying a product that wasn’t properly replaced when it was recalled.

Some other resources for checking on product recalls are listed below:

• Office of Defects Investigation – This is primarily for vehicle recalls (mostly regarding safety restraints) but they do have a section just for child safety restraints and car seats.
• US Consumer Product Safety Commission – This is a great resource for many things regarding safety and product recalls.  They too have a section related to child products – which they separate by ‘toys’ and ‘everything else but toys’
• Child Product Safety – This site was started by the Arkansas government and shows product recalls separated by year or category.
• Baby Center – This is Baby Center’s Product Recall Finder site – which gets the recall information from ODI mentioned above (Office of Defects Investigation).

Many of these sites also have RSS feeds that will update automatically when a product gets recalled, which are very useful.  An RSS Feed is just a file that lists all the posts of a site/blog and gets updated automatically if you subscribe to them (there’s many readers that can access these feeds) – so once you subscribe to one of them, you can just open your reader and it will show all the lastest posts, or in this case, the latest product recalls.  I have one of these feeds showing on this blog – in the right sidebar.  It’s displaying ODI’s child product (not toys) recall feed.  It will get updated anytime they add a product to that list/feed.
