Nov. 5-7th, 2010; renowned flamenco artists Cihtli Ocampo and Ethan Margolis will be in Seattle three days only to teach an Intermediate/Advanced technique and Solea workshop. Each three hour session will include 2 hours of technique and choreography by Cihtli Ocampo and 1 hour of application with guitar and cante by Ethan Margolis.

Workshop fee: entire 3 days $225.00; one day drop in $95.00, auditors $30.00 per session; all payments due by Sept. 10, 2010. Please make checks payable to “Arte y Pureza” and mail to Rubina Carmona, 3634 48th Ave. SW, Seattle 98116.

Dancers! Maria Bermudez, “Chacha”, will be presenting a three day workshop in Seattle on Friday, Aug. 6 through Sunday, Aug.8 at American Dance Institute, 8007 and 8001 Greenwood Ave. N (corner of NW 80th St.).

There will be two 90 minute sessions per day: Level One appropriate for experienced beginners/intermediates; Level Two for advanced/professionals. Teachers are encouraged to attend! All classes accompanied by Marcos Carmona on guitar and Rubina Carmona on Cante.

Times:
Fri. Aug. 6 (Studio 2; )Level 1 at 1 pm-2:30 pm; Level 2 at 2:30 pm-4 pm.
Sat. Aug. 7 (Studio 1); Level 1 at 3 pm-4:30 pm; Level 2 at 4:30 pm-6 pm;
Sun. Aug. 8 (Studio 2); Level 1 at 1 pm-2:30 pm; Level 2 at 2:30-4 pm.

Prices: All 6 sessions $260.00; 4 sessions for $180.00; 3 sessions for $135.00; 2 sessions for $90.00; one session for $45.00.

FLAMENCO VOICE WORKSHOP:

Stephanie will cover the most important fundamentals for any flamenco singer. First the physical aspect will be covered through technique, breathing, warm-ups, scales, projection, and relaxing the voice.
Then of course, musicality will be covered through applying these skills to singing in compás(rhythm), with emphasis on phrasing and where to sing in contra(syncopation). We felt while many workshops teach flamenco letras, it was time to have a workshop on how sing flamenco correctly. This workshop will be appropriate for singers of all levels.

Dec 4, 5 & 6: “Arte y Pureza” Buleria Workshop with Cihtli Ocampo and Ethan Margolis

Flamenco Arts Northwest & Carmona Flamenco present “Arte y Pureza“: Cihtli Ocampo, dancer and Ethan Margolis, guitarist and singer. This very special bulerias workshop will take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday, December 4, 5 and 6 from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm each day, at the American Dance Intitute, 8007 Greenwood Ave N in Seattle, WA.

Each three hour session will include a rigorous technique class and bulerias choreography with Cihtli during the first 90 minutes, followed by an intensive class with guitarist/singer Ethan Margolis, demonstrating different styles of cante from various Andalucian towns (Jerez, Lebrija, Moron, Utrera and Cadiz) and how to work with them appropriately.

Cihtli has lived in Sevilla since 2000 and trained exclusively with the Farruco family. She has performed with them throughout Spain and the U.S., and with many other flamenco luminaries such as Ines Bacan, Concha Vargas and Miguel Funi.

Ethan Margolis has also lived in Sevilla for the past decade, dedicating himself to learning and preserving the purest forms of Gypsy flamenco. He produced the CD “Aires Gitanos” with Miguel Funi, and composed a flamenco rock opera, “Spanish Day” performed as part of their U.S tour this year. Arte y Pureza has toured the U.S. three times to sold out houses and resounding acclaim.

Costs: All three dance workshops, (3 hours each) $280; 2 days $190, one day $95.

Guitarists and singers are encouraged to audit; audit fee is $30 for the second half of any day (2:30-4) or $45 for the full 3 hours.

Audiotaping is permitted throughout; videotaping permitted for the last 10 minutes of the choreography section.

Nov 16: Flamenco Dance Class Series: Sevillanas with Encarnación from Children of the Revolution

For those inspired by Encarna’s dancing last Saturday with Rafael de Utrera and want a great intro to flamenco dance, or those flamenco dancers who would like to learn or perfect the art of the Sevillanas, this class is for you.

Mondays November 16th, 23rd, 30th and December 2nd – 7:00P.M. to 8:00P.M.

Series description: Palmas (hand-clapping), postures, arms, torso and hand movements, turns, zapateo (foot tapping) and choreography of one of the most interactive and most widely used flamenco palos or styles: Sevillanas.

Beginner to Intermediate Level welcome.

Requirements: Flamenco or strong character shoes. Skirt is recommended but not necessary. Comfortable clothing. Email me with questions!

Tuition: 4-week series are $80 total, paid in advance.

Flamenco Guitar Accompaniment Master Class: If there is one thing you need to know as a flamenco guitarist(aside from playing in compas), it is how to play for a singer. Rafael and Eric will be breaking it down into simple, easy to apply fundamentals. Compás, letras, cambios, multiple chord voices, when and when not to play, how to follow, and how to play Bulería in 6/8.
Pre-requisite: Basic flamenco guitar technique and compas por Bulería.
Cost: $60pre reg./$70 walk-in

Luis Amador is a multi-talented flamenco, accomplished at cajon, guitar, and singing. We rarely have access to flamenco artists such as Luis.

Currently, Luis is touring all over the world with Joaquin Cortes as a member of his company in stage productions such as, “Mi Soledad” and “Cale”.
He is considered as the one of the finest multi-instrumentalists for the stage as well as recording.
Luis has recorded and performed with artists such as Jorge Pardo, Israel Varela, Tomatito, Juan de Juan, Pepe Habichuela, Farruquito, Belen Maya, Joaquin Grilo, Chick Corea, Pata Negra, and Diego Amador.

Born into one of the most prominent gypsy families, the Amador clan, Luis Amador has lived flamenco since birth. Luis’s background includes a life with his father, Rafael, and uncle, Raimundo Amador, founders of the world famous band “Pata Negra”, and known as innovators of flamenco and blues fusion. His other uncle is accomplished recording artist Diego Amador.
As a child, flamenco legends such as Camaron and Tomatito frequently visited his home, where he learned the traditions of flamenco music. He was also exposed to the jazz artists that influenced his father such John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, Art Blakey, John Coltrane, and Miles Davis.
