Kane Mathis began his musical career at age 16 playing blues and jazz clubs in Chicago and performing with legends such as Barrelhouse Chuck and Harmonica Todd for 5 years. He performed everywhere from festivals to roadhouses before going to The Lawrence Conservatory to study Jazz and Classical guitar. Simultaneously Kane began making trips to The Gambia, Africa to live with a family of hereditary musicians, which he has done for the past 14 years. Kane holds a diploma from The Tiramang Traditional music school in The Gambia and has performed for the President of The Gambia, the American Ambassador to The Gambia, and he has appeared on Gambian National Radio and Television. Kane’s first album was on daily rotation on Gambian radio. Kane is also one of the leading interpreters of Ottoman classical music having studied at Istanbul’s I.T.U. conservatory before beginning a 5-year apprenticeship with Oud virtuoso Münir Nurettin Beken.

Sean Gaskell began playing the Kora in 2007. He was initially inspired after having heard the instrument being played by Kane Mathis, a Seattle based Kora player. Sean took lessons from Kane and then traveled to Gambia in 2008 while a student at The Evergreen State College, to study with Moriba Kuyateh, and his father, Malamini Jobarteh. Sean accompanied Moriba in performance at various festivals and events in Gambia and Senegal throughout his 3.5 month stay there. Sean performs solo and is anticipating his inaugural album release to take place in the spring of 2012.

This coming Thursday night, May 17th, come and enjoy some West African traditional rhythms and jazz fusion.

Joining Thione will be Lee Oskar on harmonica, Leif Totusek on guitar, Aaron Walker-Loud on drumset, Brady Millard-Kish on bass, Naomi Siegel on trombone, Tobi Stone on saxophone, Chad McCullough on trumpet, Gora Diop & Etienne Cakpo on percussion, Eckaman Ngondo & Shanetta Brown on vocals.

During intermission- Yeke Yeke will also perform traditional West African rhythms and song. The traditional set will feature Frank Anderson, Sam Weng and Brennon Murphy, Rusty Knorr and Chave Mirel.

Enjoy the happy hour, good food, great music and dancing. Bring a few friends and come on by to the Triple Door and have fun! The show is free.

In a little less than a year, Whifth of Fiskey (Tubaluba) has made quite a name for itself while bringing the New Orleans Brass Band tradition to the street and clubs of Seattle. Whether its leading second line parades at the Fremont Solstice Parade, U District Street Fair, Ballard SeaFoodfest, and the West Seattle Street Fair or tearing the roof off of local clubs like the Tractor Tavern, the Nectar Lounge, and the Croc, Tubaluba is just the grease you need to keep it movin’ all night long. Tubaluba brings vocals, piano, drums, and a mess of horns to the party, serving up New Orleans classics with second line-ified R&B tunes and booty shakin’ originals. Funk yeah!

Anokye Agofomma is led by Ghanaian master drummer Yaw Amponsah and inspired by the teaching of his father, the legendary Koo Nimo. Be prepared for hot Ghanaian drumming in the traditional Asante drumming traditions of Kete, Fontomfrom, and Adowa as well as popular palm wine music.

Sol Afrique features Cameroonian singer/songwriter/guitarist Guillaume Mpacko serving up a musical smorgasbord of Afro, Latin and jazzy beats and moods from Cameroon, South Africa, Cuba and the Caribbean in general.

Award-winning Nigerian musician Seun Kuti is the youngest son of beloved Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, who was revered for his radical politics as much as his music. Seun is very much his father’s son: he has that deep singing voice and plays alto saxophone with a pungent, muscular, sexy blend of funk and jazz infused with traditional African elements. Not only that, he is co-leader of Fela’s old band, the deservedly legendary Egypt 80. An 18-piece powerhouse of explosive dance grooves, heavy-hitting basslines, vibrant spectacle and lots of politicized energy, Egypt 80 generates a sophisticated blend of beats and rhythms. Seun is in his early 20s and grew up with the band, most of whom are incredible musical veterans in their 50s and 60s. With dancers and a lineup of horns, keyboards, guitars, percussion and vocals, this one-of-a-kind band will play some Seun originals and lots of Fela classics.
