Nicolai Shmatko and "Peace Express"

Nicolai Shmatko has presented the international project - the sculptural composition "Peace Express" and also acquainted his guests with new creative works, namely "Three Graces" in marble made by N. Shmatko and "Three Graces" in stone-tinted plaster made by his son Rafael.

N. Shmatko had been working on "Peace Express"
for more than one month, but the most difficult thing was to render the idea of this sculpture. The sculptor had to scrutinize thoroughly each of the candidates he wanted to immortalize.

"I decided to make this sculpture in order to evoke a response from these world leaders so that they would pay more attention to the problems of peacekeeping on our planet. I have chosen these politicians surely because they "run the show" in this world" - N. Shmatko said.

The sculptural portraits of the President of the USA - Barack Obama, the President of Russia - Dmitry Medvedev, the Prime-minister of Italy - Silvio Berlusconi, the President of Venezuela - Hugo Chavez and the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, the President of the People's Republic of China - Hu Jintao are imaged on the tips of the fingers of a hand in the center of which there is a symbolic globe with a fly transfixed by Barack Obama. >>> see all photos >>>

N. Shmatko appealed to the leaders of the 5 countries with the help of mass media with the proposition to Barack Obama to allocate 5 million dollars for the financing of the statue made of marble "Christ's Appearance to the Apostles" and also "to construct a new city in the centre of which this sculptural composition will be set."

The sculptor suggested Dmitry Medvedev "planning a visit to the gallery and providing help in its "extension".

N. Shmatko offered Hu Jintao to organize an exhibition in China where the sculptor is ready to show more than 100 sculptures and more than 300 canvases. During this exhibition the sculptor "is going to fundraise 1 billion dollars" which he promised to pass to "the distressed provinces of China". The host, in its turn, as N. Shmatko proposed, will have to guarantee the transportation of the collection and to allow 3.000 square meters of exhibition area and the presence of mass media.

Silvio Berlusconi was offered "to be responsible for the expenses of the presentation of N. Shmatko in Florence Biennale 2009 and to take part in the inauguration of Biennale" in which N. Shmatko intends to participate.

Hugo Chavez was offered "to realize a project which would symbolize the people of Venezuela. The sculptor also invited the President to visit the art gallery "Shmatko & Sons".

"With our efforts (in the field of sculpture creation), my sons and I are ready to bring beauty to the Venezuelan people and to offer them new opportunities for tourism," - N. Shmatko said.

ACT 7^th Ave Window Project

Presented by The Central Heating Lab at ACT

ACT Theatre and the Central Heating Lab at ACT have introduced a new tradition in the Seattle arts community, and we want it to feature YOU. A few times each year, ACT fills its giant 7^th Avenue windows with art installations of all kinds, representing physical proof of ACT�s mission, making the building even more of an engaging, eclectic center of art and culture. Each installation uses ACT, the Central Heating Lab, or one of the theatre�s current productions as a subject or starting point.

We want YOUR art to fill one of these windows! To help make your project a reality, each window artist will be awarded a budget of $1,000. Ten installation proposals will be selected in mid-August. Five will be installed at ACT in September, and another five in November.

Applications are due 5:00 p.m. Friday, August 14. We hope you apply!

Sept. - Rock �n� Roll (by Tom Stoppard, about politics, passion and Pink Floyd, in 1968 Europe)

Choose a subject for your window installation: Runt of the Litter, Rock �n� Roll, A Christmas Carol, Sister�s Christmas Catechism, Central Heating Lab at ACT, or ACT � A Contemporary Theatre. 5) Materials needed:

Each window is approximately 12� feet wide and 8� tall, made of three vertical panes. Installation area includes the window ledge, approximately 1.5� deep. Installations that can be viewed or enjoyed somehow from both the outside and inside of the building are preferred but not necessarily required.

Five window installation projects will be selected, and awarded a budget of $1,000 each. Projects will be installed by the artist in early September, unless other arrangements are specifically made. Hello,
I am looking for an artist who could mentor me in my drawing effort. I am not a beginner, and i work mostly on my own. I would like to have someone to show my drawings to and get constructive feedback and tips, and maybe make a couple of drawings together during the session.
Meeting once a week would be ideal... my budget is $20-25 per class.
I am interested in acquiring academic drawing skills, focusing on figure drawing, quick sketches, still life, etc. I am a very motivated and art-loving person.
I would love to see samples of your drawings, so having a link to your website would be perfect.
Hope there is someone out there who has a passion for teaching :)

A yearly, non-restricted award of $3,000 for Seattle Artists
who have a connection to the Pioneer Square neighborhood

Artist awardees will have demonstrated a profound ability to challenge the limits of conductive creative discourse and its effects on our society, pushing the creative act beyond the accepted limits, definitions, or purposes of art while engaging audiences outside the aesthetic industrial complex.

The grant is administered by Artist Trust and 4Culture with the assistance of the late artist Su Job's personal representative, Lynn Schirmer.

Since the industrial revolution, the role of art in society has gone through profound changes, more than any other period in the history of civilization. When we examine the role of art in ancient cultures, its use in ritual and ceremony, the contrast is significant.

Over the course of western history, institutions of power, both religious and state, have used art as a propaganda tool and vehicle to further their own agendas, which may in fact not serve the best interests of society. During the twentieth century, and especially with the advent of television, market forces completely subsumed the power of the image, and in a broader sense how all creative acts are perceived by society. Today, in ever more sophisticated ways, art is bound to consumer culture, and ultimately, a servant of the capitalist agenda.

The result of these developments is a profound disconnection in the lives of everyday people with the creative process, and the initial impetus for the creative act.

The purpose of this grant is to recognize an artist who incorporates the creative process into a life practice that diffuses the boundaries between professional activities, social responsibilities, and respect for the people that compose the community we all share.
