Not just any birth. And that because of the salvation available to us through Him as Savior, we have much to celebrate. "Jesus- Our Savior - Our Salvation" reminds us that our sinfulness was the reason Jesus came and thus the reason for the season. The sermon title "C and E Christians" noted that often "C and E" Christians are those people who only show up in church on Christmas and Easter. The holiday rituals are for the most part only rituals devoid of any life to them, and thus not really "holy days." Since we served communion on this Sunday, the sermon points out that communion reminds us that the baby born on Christmas is the same one who grew to become a man and was crucified and then rose again on Easter. Communion connects the C and E. Yes, "C and E Christians" are also those who know that the reason for the "C" was that the "E" event might bring us salvation. This sermon focuses on ways we are challenged to be thankful to God in today's world. Stories are shared that highlight that challenge. Also we are reminded that there are times when God uses our disappointments and failures to draw us closer to Him, so that we might experience Him in a supportive and new way. Thanksgiving is about Him and His love for us, and not necessarily the blessings we've received from Him (click here) http://www.seaviewbaptist.com/podcast/20071118.mp3

Today's sermon is based on Matthew 14:22-39 the story of the Jesus walking on the water and the disciples in the storm tossed boat. The sermon focuses on "the Crippling Power of Fear." The listener is challenged to find where they are in the story as they reflect on how it intersects their spiritual journey. Several options are suggested. The central theme is that God faithfulness to be with us through the storms of life is certain. Stories are shared and snapshots from the text are explored to reinforce the theme. Using St. Paul's defense before King Agrippa in Acts 26:13-23 as the foundation for a call to serving the Kingdom of God, Paul says he was sent to serve and to witness by bringing light into darkness and the power of God to replace the power of Satan. The sermon shows that such a call has also been received by our missionaries tody in far away places. It also points out the today's missionaries flesh out Hudson Taylor's comment to "Expect great things from God; Attempt great things for God" Six video clips are used to show and tell in the missionaries own words how God is using them and making a difference in the world today. Then to think about "when" that verse became significant for you. Tow such words (or verses) are found in today's scripture reading from Romans 8:12-32. specifically romans 8:18 and 8:28 are explored for their ability to help in times of trouble, suffering and disppointment. It's the parable of the sower (sometimes called the parable of the soils.) Our foucs is of Jesus, the greatest storyteller who ever lived and the fact that his story is the greatest story ever told. We explore what THE STORY is, and then why that story is important to us today. The "what?", "What for?" are followed by the "So What?" and the challenge to tell the story today not only in song, but through our lives. Our word is hungry for "stories" and Jesus' Story is life giving. The story of the healing of the blind man, Bartimaeus. "When Faith Heals" explores the faith of the man who seemed to know and see Jesus better than even his disciples did. Jesus asked him, "What do you want me to do for you?" Bartimaeus knew his answer and was willing to take the consequences. The question for us today is two-fold: 1) De we know what we want Jesus to do for us? and 2) are we willing to live with the consequences if and when He does it. The role of faith is vital. " (Part 2). It continues the thoughts of the previous sermon on Romans 12. this message is based on Romans 12:9-31. Paul provides a series of challenges for christian living for relating with those inside the church, outside the church, and the world at large. the challenges often seem impossible to accomplish on our own, and they are, but with the help of Christ's Spirit we can atempt them with some success. The sermon walks through the text verse by verse and ends with the challenge of verse 31, "Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good." Paul has many "sound bites of wisdom" that describe the life of one willing to be transformed by the renewing of our minds" when we allow the "mercies of Christ" to become a part of our being. It comes after the first 11 chapters of Romans that focuses on the human condition, God's provision in Christ and the diffference he makes in the hope for humanity. Chapter 12 and following contains the practical outcomes for people who believe what paul spoke of in the first 11 chapters. He begins Romans 12:1 with the word "therefore". That word implies something that has gone before and that what is about to follow is a natural consequence of what has been said. He challenges the early church to live out it's inheritance; to live as people who are being changed on the inside being transformed and renewed in light of God's mercies for them in Jesus Christ. We're to be inner directed by God's Spirit rather than outer directed by the pressures andfashions of everyday life. Aiello is titled "God's House Salad" and is based on the text in Hebrews 10:19-25. On 5 occasions the author enourages the Christians to persevere using the phrase "Let us..." (lettuce). Hence the title. Each variation on the "let us" challenge is designed to strengthen the witness and faith of God's people in the face of doubt, confusion, suffering and persecution. Let us drawn near to God in faith; let us hold firmly to the hope, let us spur one another on toward love; let us not give up meeting together and let us encourage one another, make up the "salad." Also, a quote is used to remind the listener that the ears of faith cause him or her to hear the music of the Good News which sets his or her feet in motion and faithfulness. "Those who danced were thought quite insane by those who could not hear the music." This sermon challenges us to "hear the music" of God's love for us in Christ and to keep on dancing. It's noted that both Mark and John tell the story as well, but they both leave out the part about Peter. Here we see Peter challenging Jesus to prove who he says he is and in the process Peter begins to sing into the water. Jesus' 2 comments for the basis of this sermon. First he says "Take courage. It is I. Do not be afraid." Words of hope and a reminder that he is always with us, no matter what the circumstance and the chaos of the situation. He was with Peter at that moment and not back on the shore as Peter assumed. Jesus also says "Why do you doubt, o you of little faith." Most often we consider this to be refering to the moment when Peter sinks into the water. this sermon suggests that Peter's doubting is rather demonstrated when he tests Jesus "if you really are who you say you are, then..." These words are very similar to what Satan says to Jesus back in Matt. chapter 4. Let us remember Jesus is always with us. that's the promise of this story. It's also about how God uses whatever means possible to get his good news to us, even outside our normal channels of authority. Naaman, a genearl of a foreign power, seeks healing from a prophet of God, Elisha, and gets it, but not the way he expected. He learns a lesson in humility that we all need to learn. Read 2 Kings 5:1-19 for details. Although it portrays a hated enemy in a positive light and thus confounds his hearers, Jesus makes his point that the definition of 'neighbor' is more about what you do than where you live. His techinque of questioning the questioner and of telling parables engages the reader and makes you want to hear how he brings it all together. 'Go and do likewise' challenges us to realize that we can be and ARE neighbors to anyone we help along life's journey. The topic is Pauls encouragement to the early church to STAY ON TARGET. This is the first of Paul's letters of the New Testament, written about 50 A.D. He offers a dozen imperatives for Christian living and faithfulness to the early church, which he founded a loved dearly. He reminds them that the God of Peace is reliable and will help them accomplish these imperatives as they walk cole to the Lord. http://www.seaviewbaptist.com/podcast/20070729.mp3 (click here)

This is the last in the series on THE FANTASTIC FOUR. Our focus is the Gospel of John who portrays Jesus as the Son of God. The readings are from John 1:29-49; 20:30-31 which show John's purpose to be that of dultivating belief in Jesus as God's Son. John has a cosmic perspective and encourages "belief" 98 times in his Gospel. His perspective is quite different from the other Gospels wherein he highlights the divinity of Christ moreso than his humanity. The "four" of course refers to the four Gospels. This week we look at the Gospel of Luke which promotes Jesus as a "perfect man." His perfection has to do with his attitude towards others. In this sermon we look at Luke 19:1-10 the story of Zacchaeus, the tax collector. Luke wrote for Gentile believers and almost believers, and he did so, so that they might have a certainty about their faith. Luke ofgten shows Jesus being concerned about the disinherited, the poor and those whom others tended to shun. We're looking at the theme of each of the four gospels and how they present Jesus to the reader and believer. This week we consider Mark: Jesus as Servant. The text is Mark 2:1-12, the story of the four men who bring their paralyzed friend to Jesus for healing, but encounter a crowd of people in the way preventing them from getting to Jesus. We consider the three facets of the story: the Jesus facet, the friends facet and the crowd facet. The challenge is to find ourselves in the story and reflect on how we can be more faithful in bringing people into the presence of Jesus with out getting "in the way." Their mission is to save the world from the evil ones. As Christians we too have a "fantastic four" in the Gospels. Their writers also have a mission - revealing God's love for the world in sending Jesus Christ. And of course his mission is also to save the world. This series of sermons will consider the central message or theme of each of the fastanstic four Gospels. This sermon is based on Matthew 27 and the many comments regarding Jesus as "King of the Jews." The title is: 1. Jesus as King. (Each week we'll explore a different Gospel writer's theme to gain a multi-perspective understanding of the One we call Lord and Savior. )

This is the 4th in the series "UNWRAPPING YOUR SPIRITUAL GIFTS." 4. Deploying Yours... This sermon reminds us that after we discover and develop our spiritual gifts the challenge is to use them, practice them, deploy them for building up the kingdom of God and the church of Jesus Christ. It's suggested that we study the gifts, pray for guidance as to how when and where he wants us to use the gifts. Testing the waters is suggested. The learning curve is also described with 4 parts to it: "I don't know that I don't know," to "I know that I don't know," to "I know that I know," and finally to "I don't know that I don't know."

St. Paul suggests that the right way to use the gifts you have is "in love" and "to the glory of God." A video clip of a scene from EVAN ALMIGHTY is used in the sermon to demonstrate that God wants us to use the gifts in situations that call out for that gift to be used. If your gift is 'service" God doesn't zap you with a service gene, but rather puts you in a position or circumstance where you can use it if you choose to. May your gifts be used always for the building up of the Kingdom of God through the Church. When you became a Christian you received a spiritual inheritance unique to you for service to the Lord. Your inheritance is in the form of "spiritual gifts" that equip you as part of the body of Christ. As you discover and develop your gifts, you can then use them for the building up of the Body of Christ and the Kingdom of God on earth. DEVELOPING YOUR GIFTS reminds us that we are not on a "cruise ship" but rather a "battleship". We're not just along for the ride to have fun, but every person onboard has a specific function or purpose that will help the "ship" reach it's destination and fulfill it's mission. The title is "Discovering Yours." It's based on Romans 12:3-8, and the seven motivational gifts described by Paul. Wach of the seven gifts is described, an "inventory of gifts" was made avaialbe to everyone present. The inventory asked 70 questions which when answered helps a person discover their gift mix. The sermon also reminds us of the importance of discovering your gift mix. The goal is to become the person God has created you to be by serving in ways that will bring you fulfillment and fruitfulness as you do your part to build up the body of Christ. Today we begin the process of understanding, discovering, developing and deploying our "spiritual gifts" to strengthen our faith and to build up the body of Christ, the Church.

This sermon is based on Ephesians 4:6-8; I Cor 12:1; and 1 Peter 4:10-11. The Ephesians passage identifies the role of the pastor/teacher as one of "equipping the people of God for works of service in building up the Church of God." One first step in that effort is to understand that when we became Christians God gave each of us "spiritual gifts" to be used for His service.

The challenge of every believer is to learn what one's spiritual gifts are, and then to develop them and use them to strengthen the Church. Indeed true satisfaction, fulfillment and fruitfulness comes only as one uses his/her "gifts" in service to God. When we don't serve out of our "gift mix" we easily get burnt out and find little satisfaction in our acts of service. This first sermon in the series is titled, "WE ALL HAVE GIFTS... TO GIVE." Richard Wingate. It's entitled, "Here I Raise My What?... (My Ebenezer!) The sermon focuses on the importance of remembering. The people of God in the Old Testament "remembered" God's hand at work in their journey to the promised land and time and time again were called to remembering God's ongoing faithfulness.

The Memorial Day tie-in challenges us to also remember the blessings that are ours today because of the sacrifices of others willing to die for their country and who are dying even today to preserve our freedoms. Of course, remembering the cost of our salvation is what empowers us to remain faithful to the God who created us and sent His Son to give His life for us.
