Outside It's Snowing ... but in here it's Spring!

Working on the Spring collection and getting so excited to share it with you in February!! Here are some samples of what I'm working on. Minimal, geometric and earthy ... let's just start there!

Moving, moving, moving ...

I've wavered on this idea a lot. Should I stay working from home or should I move into a studio space? There are pros and cons to both. I don't have a problem staying on task, but, I do believe that I could be more productive with my time. When a fellow small business owner moved from her basement to her new studio space she told me that she couldn't believe how much more productive she was being away from home. I haven't been able to stop thinking about that.

Seaworthy is growing. But, the tiny home I share with my partner and our pup, isn't getting any bigger. In fact, as Seaworthy grows, the house seems to get smaller. With the holiday rush, this became blaringly obvious. The breakfast nook became Seaworthy shipping central and the dining table acted as the event & order staging area. Not to mention that the small second bedroom is already stuffed to the gills with my work space and studio. It doesn't leave much room for living.

So with lots of nervous excited butterflies.... I'm embarking on this new chapter for my little business. It's really just a little room ... but it feels like a step into a giant new world. The photos give a little glimpse into the space. It has really high ceilings and a super cool peaked sky light that I love. I'm going to share more photos as I get it set up. Let's Get Inspired....

You know when you're really onto something. A good book that you can't put down or an album that you've spun into ruins. Something that you feel in your skin. That's how I feel when I get to make new designs. Like I've got the goose pimples in my blood.

Here are a couple peaks at some items from my spring line. I'll be incorporating stamped and oxidized shapes with a variety of earthy, complex stones. Can't wait!

2012 ... Things I'm Looking Forward To

I am terrible at planning ahead. When someone asks "where would you like to be in five years?" my mind just flat lines. Let's just get through the next six months ... what's the rush to get to five years from NOW? So, in true Marisa form, here are the things I'm looking forward to for the first few months of 2012.

1. Two vacations in January, around (but not because of) my birthday. First a weekend at the beach with my girls and the second a week in the California desert with my man. Umm... who is the luckiest girl in the world??

2. New designs. Mad, crazy sketch book designs ready to make it into reality. I've been sitting on these for about two months. Waiting for the holiday rush to settle so I can put them together!

3. Seaworthy marketing redesign. A collaboration with some very talented friends to bring new life to the Seaworthy logo and web presence.

4. POOL trade show. The real deal. My stomach just turned typing that. February is going to get here in a blink, I know it.

5. Spring lookbook shoot, mid-March. I have a serious vision and it involves a road trip.

6. Stones. This holiday season was crazy. Crazy awesome! The best part was meeting so many amazing people and listening to them. I learned that you like the stones ... you like the metal, but you also like the stones. So, I've been doing a bunch of research on stones and have put together a small batch of crazy beautiful ones for Spring. I can't wait to share.

7. Space... a new space for Seaworthy. We're manifesting this now.

8. And, Spain. That's right. I'm going!

Since I'm putting together a new studio space in my mind (manifesting the best new work space for the new year), I'm also putting together how I want to decorate the portion that won't be covered in little bits of metal and sand paper dust. This Etsy shop, Ocean Swept, has so many sweet little items for making a home away from home.

Last night I dreamt that I double booked photographers for a look book shoot. And, I showed up wearing only a sweater and socks. So, in my dream, I had to explain to the irritated photograhers my error ... all while not wearing any pants. Someone must be feeling unprepared and unorganized... pretty sure that person is me. So, I appreciate that someone else (Lindsey Lynch in this case) can make my world seem so organized and full of ease.

(PS... yes, all my jewelry lives in a fairy land of moss and sand until it ships your way... it's just how we do it)

You can find all of the above pieces in my Etsy shop. This is the second half of the shoot with Lindsey Marla photography. All of these photos were taken in one location on Sauvie Island near Portland, Oregon. It is like a magic fairy land there. We were surrounded by so many tiny frogs, decomposing logs, moss, sand and driftwood. We carried out boxes of props but ended up only needing exactly what nature had already provided.

I'm counting down the days until I can announce something VERY exciting in the works for Seaworthy. The anticipation is killing me ... literally... I haven't been sleeping!!

In terms of exciting news that I can announce... Seaworthy is headed to Mississippi soon to the Alluvian Spa in Greenwood. And ... the holiday schedule is filling up quickly (another reason to stay up nights!). I really hope that if you have time, you stop by one of the shows and say hello. It's what makes this all so much fun...meeting the people that help keep Seaworthy going.

Good things and better things ...

Good things include going to shows that you expect to be slow and end up surprising you. Also included in this category is the way people who normally wouldn't let me talk to them (shy people, busy people, people with common sense) open up when they find something lovely. They ask questions about how it's made, where it's made and questions about me. Luckily these are questions I can actually answer unlike questions about anything related to pop-culture (these ones really stump me). Good things also include new stores that get excited about Seaworthy. Proprietresses who are equally as excited about their stores as I am about Seaworthy. And, who don't know anything about pop-culture either (I made that part up).

Better things include, dragging your best friend (who is the world's most awesome middle school Spanish teacher, aka: free time?? what's that?) to Seattle with you for a night. Cocktails, dinner and lots of walking and talking ... followed by going to bed early (we're not that cool). Even if she had to grade 1000 papers in my booth at the show... I was super thankful just to have her in my presence for 24 hours in a row.

Better things also include, a day trip to the Oregon coast to celebrate an awesome weekend. We got so lucky with the weather. Sable (my dog) slept for 24 hours straight after this trip - she's an old girl and the beach is just so exciting. Clyde found a whole sand dollar (I've lived in Oregon over 30 years and don't think that's happened to me) and he saw his first wild star fish (not in the aquarium). Better things, let's do this more.

Holiday Show Season is Here ... how did this happen?

Just a portion of one show inventory ...

Last year I felt like I didn't plan ahead enough for the holidays. By the time I started thinking about holiday shows, most of the deadlines had already passed. This year, I think I did the opposite. My upcoming schedule is a bit daunting and it's forcing me to think about my Etsy shop cut off date for Christmas deliveries. I think it's going to be December 9th for guaranteed delivery by Christmas. I know that seems early ... but with out of town shows, it might be the reality. I will leave my shop open and try to get orders out as quickly as possible after the 9th.

If you are looking for Seaworthy this holiday Season, I will be in Seattle, Austin, Portland and San Francisco. And of course, you can always visit one of my amazing shops (Now carried by 20 fabulous stores!). And check Seaworthy out on Etsy.

Fall/Winter Looks...In the works...

I spent my Sunday with two very talented and beautiful ladies; photographer, Lindsey Lynch and model, Emily Perkins. I'm finally putting together a fall/winter lookbook for Seaworthy. Which will actually include items from my Summer line, Survival. So maybe it's a Summer/Fall/Winter lookbook?? Let's just call it the "Seaworthy Lookbook". I am beyond excited to be working with Lindsey. It's nice to have a fresh perspective on the pieces I see every day. And, Emily... well, she just makes everything look good. "Here Emily, model this garbage bag." Wow, Fall couture.

Painting the walls white...

My first order of business after buying my house was to get fresh paint on all the walls and change some of the hideous light fixtures. The result is a very colorful home, pale pistachio walls in the living room with a fuchsia 50's sofa and a pastel blue dining room with orange metal shelving, for example.

I love all this color but lately I've been wishing for a room with crisp white walls and linens. I know my dog would soon have it filled with tiny black hairs. But one can wish, right? And... how dreamy are these rooms?

It's pretty exhausting what our mind and body goes through when we lose someone that we care about. The stages we work through are like climbing an endless staircase. With my mind in this state recently I've began to feel amazed by our capacity for friendship & love. It seems that our ability to continue loving and befriending new people while we still keep the old, is such a precious gift. That we can meet someone who touches us in some way and we can hold their memory inside our mind forever, regardless of their proximity to our current life. And, just when we think our lives are filled to the brim with people that we admire and love - we meet someone else and invite them in just the same. We have this amazing gift to build and maintain relationships (friend, family and love) and it might be the thing that I am most grateful for. Relationships that we experience every day, relationships that exist only in memory and the anticipation of relationships to come.
