The Social Network: Today's Trend!

Social networking has been a hit to the so called netizens or the internet citizens in the world. One proof is the growing number of social networking sites being offered which greatly attracted innumerable individuals to open new accounts. It has been said that if you don’t have one, you are already left out to the new “thing” online.

Top social networking sites are Facebook, Twitter and though not at first a social-network-oriented online page, You Tube has been considered one since there are already people from different places and races connect with such site and become friends online while typically sharing their videos in a huge community of people online.

Facebook.com, for me, ranks number one in all the social networking sites which launched on February 2004 and as of January 2011, it has reached more than 600 million active online users. When you open an account in facebook, you have to add profile information and the like, after which you will then start searching for your friends and send friend requests. After a while, you will begin to post to your wall, people will like it, then they will comment, you will comment back, chat them, share pictures and videos, and do all the other stuff.

The line which becomes very popular after the movie “The Social Network” was shown, “You don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies…” is very true. While you are adding your REAL friends online, some individuals will send friend request to you, without knowing them that much, you add them up. This should sound that number game is going on with the site – thinking that making a number of friends in the list will make you more powerful and dominant.

Actually, we are making the 26-year-old computer genius, Mark Zuckerberg, to accumulate more and more earnings online. Well, who would think that a dropout from Harvard University is already earning a net worth of $13.5 billion as of 2011 and still counting today? That is a big money for creating a hit, Facebook.

The other social networking site is Twitter. If you have an account, simple things should be done. You have to follow other twitter accounts or be followed, after that you tweet like a bird singing a beautiful song. Twitter is commonly used by movie and television personalities, the renowned music icons, and like but it has been used by ordinary individuals like me. They usually post or popularly known as tweet in their accounts the events that they will be up to, their insights, and many more since people are too curious on how they start and cease their day.

While the two sites require users to post something on their walls, You Tube, however is very different. You Tube requires their users to upload videos of different genres with its famous line “Broadcast Yourself”. May it be personal, in the music scene, the television industry, may it be comical, serious, travel and leisure, all should do. You Tube is a video-sharing online community which makes it to top of all the web browsers today. One views, the other is viewed or the other way around.

From all the mentioned social networking sites, these accounts should be maintained regularly, at least once every day. People will be updated about you and/or you will be updated by the people in your community of friends online. It's already too obligatory but you have started it, then you have to continue such.

Is it a sign that it's the BEGINNING of the END of the world?

Perhaps many will agree that they don't want the world to end yet but what will you do if that is destined to come about? Well, we can't do anything but pray. Every little prayer can be a big help. Problem is, we always ask help and everything from Him but seldom we give thanks. Though He will grant almost everything that we requests and asks for, we should still ask forgiveness and be grateful to everything we have in this vulnerable world.

It sounds too religious and absurd but the fact remains that we live in this planet not just to enjoy life but to spread love and respect to each and everyone. It can be too awkward to exercise such ideals but we should be responsible enough. We can do something and that simple act will lead us to betterment of our lives.

Everything happens for a reason, like what they always say. True! So, should you do bad, it will get back to you the same way like a boomerang. But if you will act the other way around, you will surely experience stuffs appropriately.

The idea that the world will end soon will never do come true if we do good things in our environment, to the people around us, and eventually change our ill and wicked attitudes and undertakings. We should not wait that human race, the living creatures and the environment will go extinct.

Let's try to make a move and bring back what was taken. And I supposed you already know what I was up to here --- end the suffering of the world!

Twitter: Do The Tweeting Habit!!!

While almost everyone has opened new accounts in top social networking sites, just recently I updated my twitter account and do the thing called "The Tweeting Habit". Well, before that I forgot I had one so I tried to sign up but Twitter notified me that there is already an existing account with the same email address. I then thought that somebody else has been into my account and has free access to my email account.

But all were just merely bad and weird thoughts of mine. I just tricked myself. All is well! Nothing to worry about. It's just that I need to update my tweets every now and then.

Letting your followers know what you are thinking and doing is a little awkward to me since I'm not an actor or what, though I'm a disk jockey in a local radio station --- I am no star! Well, this time I have to share some of my thoughts, activities and the like to my finger-counted followers.

Lea Michele in her official twitter account had posted "Look who's back!! @officialcharice!!! So happy!!!”. She even posted a picture of her and Charice.

Maria Aragon: The Next Big Thing!

Maria Aragon or Maria Lourdes Aragon was born on July 17, 2000 who is a ten year-old Filipino-Canadian singer. She is a fifth-grade student at the Isaac Brock School. She lives with her brother, two sisters and their parents in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

A video of Maria performing a cover of "Born This Way" by Lady Gaga was posted to her sister's YouTube channel on February 16, 2011 to showcase her talent to family and friends.

The video caught Lady Gaga's attention and she was so impressed by Maria's performance that she tweeted a link to the video to her eight million followers, causing a sensation and launching Maria to instant international fame.

The video garnered over 10 million views on YouTube in five days. In the following day, her video had reached about 19 million views, and still counting today.

Toronto's Virgin Radio 99.9, was among the first media outlets to reach out to Maria and attempted to fly Maria and her family to Toronto so that Maria could perform live on air.

During an interview on HOT 103 in Winnipeg, Lady Gaga called into the show to tell Maria how moved she was to her performance.

Lady Gaga then invited, an already surprised, Maria to perform "Born This Way" with her at The Monster Ball Tour concert in Toronto in March, --- an offer which Maria earnestly accepted.

Before the said event, American talk show host Ellen DeGeneres took notice of her from Lady Gaga's tweet and invited Maria to appear on her show on February 21, 2011, where Maria again performed "Born This Way" on the piano earning a standing ovation from the audience.

On March 3, 2011, Maria joined Lady Gaga on stage in front of a packed audience at the Air Canada Centre, where together they performed an acoustic duet of "Born this Way" with Maria sitting on Gaga's lap, playing piano and Lady Gaga working the pedals.

At the end of the song, Gaga turned the microphone over to Maria who thanked the audience and Gaga for allowing her to perform.

Maria later rejoined Lady Gaga and her team of back up dancers for an uptempo finale version of "Born this Way" culminating in a group hug and loud cheers from the audience.

Learning How to Cope Up with Life…

There are a lot of things that need to be mended – things that creates frustrations, stress, depression, and others – more than what you can imagine. But all those can be fixed with just a simple positive thought. Thinking that everything will be in place in no time is one quite good example. It is easy to say but plainly difficult to understand and do.

Like what one man who says that “everything will be alright”, you would probably rebut him that it is not – not as simple as he thinks it is. Why is that so? It is because human being’s mindset has a lot of negative thoughts. But every day in your life doesn’t require you to always think about bad things and evolve your life to just one thing.

It’s quite vague but every individual has to set his mindset with positive thoughts – thoughts that any problem will be crashed out and will vanish with a blink of an eye, in no time. Start every waking morning with a real positive mood. The only way which guarantees one to stay and remain to have positive thoughts is by indulging oneself to such.

Here are some actions you need to indulge in to absorb real positive thought:

*Stay happy and smile.
*Think about the good memories.
*Make yourself busy.
*Engage in extra-curricular activities.
*Socialize with other people.
*Exercise not just you physical body but your psyche as a whole.

THIS IS ALL FOR A REASON.

In life we simply see what’s happening without really knowing the reason why it occurred. Maybe because we were too pre-occupied and overtaken by circumstances that were broadly present at all moment of our time. This is simple. We are humans. We were bound to become what we really are—do mistakes and correct them—and travel around our very own ventures in life.

Talking about life let me share with you what have had happened these past few weeks of my life. A lot actually happened like any other individual experiences too. Since blogging is all about sharing experiences, this time I have to share mine as well.

The Writer Turned EIC

It was never in my thoughts to become an editor in chief in my entire student journalist life. But I would sound hypocrite if I’d deny I dreamt to become an editor at least. It’s not what I expected to turn out to be. It’s even more than that—I became not just an editor but the editor in chief.

This is not to brag or something. This is all about sharing experiences as I’ve said earlier.

I was then in my second year level in college when I decided to join the student publication in our university. It was unfortunate since I failed with my first try. I simply wanted to join because as a Mass Communication student, it would be a plus factor.

Since I failed and really wanted to try out my writing ability, I joined my school’s yearbook team and this time I successfully made it. It was never easy than I thought it was. I became part of the creative writing department. Because I was too timid and shy before I could not attend special meetings with the group and ended up with misunderstandings and at the long run, I quitted.

Another school year opened up for new opportunities like any other year. The student publication where I first tried out once again opened its doors for application; I then undertook the same process like before. Bringing with me some knowledge this time, I effectively made it.

I worked hard to become a productive and effective student journalist. I was scouting for news items in the university while legging for my major subject in the community, all in one time. It’s even beneficial since I used some of my write-ups in the student publication for my major subject.

Like any other individual I had ups and downs. I made one of the biggest mistakes in journalism, like any journalist would not want to execute, they call it “the greatest sin in journalism”. But I learned from there. I tried hard to rescue myself from that bad faith. I became even more productive. After two years being hardworking and productive, I was voted to be next in line.

There came the biggest and tough job that I never thought it was. A lot of struggles and trials came across. I succeeded some but I generally hated most of it. All of us have differences and beliefs. We carry on our very own unique attitude and character. But the problem is we generally don’t understand our differences and respect that. Some possibly understood it in some way or the other but most do not.

That goes with misunderstanding and serious misinterpretations. I could not itemize everything from here. It already came and it could never come back again but it could still be healed. I admit my own mistakes, and hoping the people around me do as well–mend what was broken. Though it might not be fixed as they were before, at least the good relationship is restored.

My being the head had ended. The thing here is I’m not holding and/or carrying with me hatred but loss of trust to their attitude towards work. Things have been said and done. I don’t have any single ill feeling towards my former constituents but you would not take away the idea that I’ll feel a little distress.

Fixed or not, my life is now different this time. But the thing is, I learned from this experience. The person Above knows what He wanted me and the people around to learn from mistakes and understand what it’s meant for. Happy or not, this goes out to be a mere fact.

WORK. WORK. WORK. ---- This has been the theme for the past few weeks.

Work is always something that is needed especially when you get to think of earning. As they say, money can't be found anywhere--you just have to work for it. After a days' work, you will soon reap the fruit of your hard and serious labor. Anyhow, things will always fall down to such category whenever you think about the said idea.

How to do it?

But before getting a job, you need to look for it. Not unless you're someone who is very special, jobs will never arrive before your doorstep, but instead you will go after them. But how? Let me share you some idea. There are already a lot of online jobs available under your very own expertise. First you just have to evaluate yourself--your strengths and weaknesses.
After such, type in the keywords in the online search engines, that most describes your capability [e.g "freelance writing"].
With your searches, there will be a lot of them--actually thousands of results or even millions. This time you just have to determine which of them is/are authentic and not a form of a spam. If it doesn't require you to pay some amount, it's surely a good opportunity to grab.
However, there are many which offer jobs but need some penny for entry, of which we couldn't actually afford. But that boils down to the idea that you need to earn, so why pay? Anyway, just be patient with looking at the perfect and right job for you.

What Makes Good People Do Bad Things?

As the story goes, Dr. Jekyll uses a chemical to turn into his evil alter ego Dr. Hyde. In real life, however, no chemical may be needed: Instead, just the right dose of certain social situations can transform ordinarily good people into evildoers, as was the case with Iraqi prisoner abusers at Abu Ghraib, argued former APA president Philip G. Zimbardo, PhD, in a presidential-track program during APA's 2004 Annual Convention in Honolulu.

Indeed, Zimbardo--an emeritus psychology professor at Stanford University--highlighted how this Dr. Hyde transformation occurred among U.S. soldiers at Abu Ghraib by presenting classic psychology research on situational effects on human behavior.

Zimbardo, who will be an expert witness for several of the U.S. soldiers on trial, argued that situations pull people to act in ways they never thought imaginable.

"That line between good and evil is permeable," Zimbardo said. "Any of us can move across it....I argue that we all have the capacity for love and evil--to be Mother Theresa, to be Hitler or Saddam Hussein. It's the situation that brings that out."

Seduced into evil

In fact, the classic electric shock experiment by social psychologist Stanley Milgram, PhD, showed that when given an order by someone in authority, people would deliver what they believed to be extreme levels of electrical shock to other study participants who answered questions incorrectly.

Zimbardo said the experiment provides several lessons about how situations can foster evil:

*Provide people with an ideology to justify beliefs for actions.
*Make people take a small first step toward a harmful act with a minor, trivial action and then gradually increase those small actions.
*Make those in charge seem like a "just authority."
*Transform a once compassionate leader into a dictatorial figure.
*Provide people with vague and ever-changing rules.
*Relabel the situation's actors and their actions to legitimize the ideology.
*Provide people with social models of compliance.
*Allow dissent, but only if people continue to comply with orders.
*Make exiting the situation difficult.

Particularly notable, Zimbardo said, is that people are seduced into evil by dehumanizing and labeling others.

"They semantically change their perception of victims, of the evil act, and change the relationship of the aggressor to their aggression--so 'killing' or 'hurting' becomes the same as 'helping,'" he said.

For example, in a 1975 experiment by psychologist Albert Bandura, PhD, college students were told they'd work with students from another school on a group task. In one condition, they overheard an assistant calling the other students "animals" and in another condition, "nice." Bandura found students were more apt to deliver what they believed were increased levels of electrical shock to the other students if they had heard them called "animals."

People's aggression can also increase when they feel anonymous--for example if they wear a uniform, hood or mask, Zimbardo said.

"You minimize social responsibility," he explained. "Nobody knows who you are, so therefore you are not individually liable. There's also a group effect when all of you are masked. It provides a fear in other people because they can't see you, and you lose your humanity."

For example, an experiment in 1974 by Harvard anthropologist John Watson evaluated 23 cultures to determine whether warriors who changed their appearance--such as with war paint or masks--treated their victims differently. As it turned out, 80 percent of warriors in these cultures were found to be more destructive--for example, killing, torturing or mutilating their victims--than unpainted or unmasked warriors.

What's more, a person's anonymity can be induced by acting in an anonymity-conferring environment that adds to the pleasure of destruction, vandalism and the power of being in control, Zimbardo noted.

"It's not just seeing people hurt, it's doing things that you have a sense that you are controlling behavior of other people in ways that you typically don't," Zimbardo said.

Zimbardo noticed that in his own simulated jail experiment in 1971--the Stanford Prison Experiment--in which college students played the roles of prisoners or guards, and the guards became brutal and abusive toward prisoners after just six days, leading Zimbardo to prematurely end the experiment. The experiment showed that institutional forces and peer pressure led normal student volunteer guards to disregard the potential harm of their actions on the other student prisoners.

"You don't need a motive," Zimbardo said. "All you really need is a situation that facilitates moving across that line of good and evil."

Prison abuses

The same social psychological processes--deindividualization, anonymity of place, dehumanization, role-playing and social modeling, moral disengagement and group conformity--that acted in the Stanford Prison Experiment were at play at Abu Ghraib, Zimbardo argued.

So is it a few bad apples that spoil a barrel? "That's what we want to believe--that we could never be a bad apple," Zimbardo said. "We're the good ones in the barrel." But people can be influenced, regardless of their intention to resist, he said.

As such, the Abu Ghraib soldiers' mental state--such as stress, fear, boredom and heat exhaustion, coupled with no supervision, no training and no accountability--may have further contributed to their "evil" actions, he noted.

"I argue situational forces dominate most of us at various times in our lives," Zimbardo said, "even though we'd all like to believe we're each that singular hero who can resist those powerful external pressures, like Joe Darby, the whistle-blowing hero of the Abu Ghraib prison."
