Florida could pull yet another top prospect from the state of Alabama.

Five-star linebacker Lyndell “Mack” Wilson named UF his No. 1 school Wednesday, announcing his leaders on Twitter.

Wilson, a consensus top-50 overall recruit and Under Armour All-American, is ranked the nation’s No. 1 outside linebacker by ESPN and 247Sports. He’s also No. 9 in the Rivals100.

The 6-foot-2, 236-pounder visited Gainesville on Aug. 1 with six other prospects from Montgomery, Alabama. One of them, safety Jeawon Taylor, has since pledged to Florida and attended the Tennessee game last weekend.

Should the Gators eventually land Wilson, they would have four of the top 20 Alabama recruits for 2016, according to 247Sports. That group of UF commits currently consists of Lamical Perine, Jeremiah Moon and Taylor.

Wilson’s other top schools, in order, are LSU, Ole Miss, Alabama, Florida State, Ohio State, Oregon and Southern Cal. He plans to make his decision on signing day.

Commit of the week: RB Lamical Perine

Lamical Perine might be on his way to four-star status.

The consensus three-star running back from Theodore (Ala.) has been on a tear this month.

Perine finished with a combined 356 yards and three touchdowns Friday in his team’s 35-28 win over Montgomery (Ala.) Park Crossing.

The majority of those yards came on the ground, as Perine went for 292 — his third consecutive game with more than 200 yards rushing.

He has 757 total yards during that stretch and 1,065 yards on the year. His midseason highlights through six games are below.

Perine visited UF for the Tennessee game and was impressed with Kelvin Taylor’s play. He plans to return to Gainesville this weekend as the Gators take on No. 3 Ole Miss.

Other standouts

WR Josh Hammond, Hallandale: Hammond caught 11 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns in a 36-28 loss to Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas.

DE Eric Mitchell, Miami Central: In a big 35-28 win over Miami rival Booker T. Washington, Mitchell had three sacks and forced a fumble.

RB Mark Thompson, Dodge City (Kan.) C.C.: Thompson rushed for 171 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries in a 27-14 win over Hutchinson (Kan.) C.C.

2017 QB Jake Allen, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas: Allen threw for 244 yards and two touchdowns on 13 of 25 passing in his team’s win over Hallandale.

While we’re all looking out for the golden ticket of a full-ride athletic scholarship, there are so many other financial aid opportunities for athletes that it’s important to keep track of all of your options.

Using a financial aid checklist to make sure you apply for every possible source of aid, much like casting your net wide to find the right school, will ensure that you maximize the total amount of scholarships and aid you receive — and minimize the amount of debt you take on.

Our friends at Admitster, the college admissions experts, recently wrote a post on the various kinds of financial aid student-athletes should apply for.

Your choice in school should match your financial aid opportunities

“No matter how much of a good fit a school is academically, physically and socially, it should also fit financially,” Admitster writes. “While you won’t know the exact cost of college until you go through the entire financial aid process, you can, using different resources, get an idea of what attendance at specific schools will cost.”

Financial aid opportunities require paperwork

Know the deadlines, and get your paperwork in on time. “Once you have an idea of whether you are applying early decision, early action, via rolling admissions, or regular decision, you can then determine when you’ll need to complete the appropriate financial aid forms,” Admitster writes.

“The schools you’re applying to will also determine the type of financial aid forms you will need to complete; the majority of schools require the FAFSA and a select number of private schools require the CSS Profile.”

Always look for more financial aid opportunities

In addition to the scholarships for demonstrated financial need or merit your school might provide, look for organizations and charitable groups in your local community that offer scholarship sources. There are multiple ways savvy families can maximize their aid or even negotiate for additional financial aid, as long as they stay on top of the process.
