U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton delivered brief remarks and presented the six global winners of the Democracy Video Challenge with their awards on Friday, September 18, 2009 in the Department of State’s Treaty Room, Washington, DC. The Secretary was joined by senior representatives from partner organizations and Hernando de Soto, President of the Institute for Liberty and Democracy, and the Jury co-chair of the Democracy Video Challenge.

The six winners are from Brazil, Nepal, the Philippines, Poland, the United Arab Emirates and Zambia. Mine was the India submission.

The Democracy Video Challenge, an online competition, asked people around the world to create short videos that completed the phrase, “Democracy is ....”

Following is a copy of Dr.T.V.Mathew's Letter to the Editor, sent to The Asian Age, Mumbai, on July 21, 2009, with regards to the ongoing Teachers Strike.

Dear Editor:

Having been in the teaching profession for nearly 30 years I am sad to note that the media too is ignoring the issues involved in the ongoing strike by university and college teachers in Mumbai. Teachers salary has been considered by the 6th pay commission and one sees no reason in Maharashtra governments failure to honour it and setting a model for other states.

In a fair assessment, at a time 'inclusive growth' and human development invite much reflection and debate, I honesty feel the state should take all measures to end the ongoing strike which affects thousands of students and teachers in Maharashtra. The failure too see education as an investment and and the failure to assess the spill over benefits of education is saddening indeed .

The three requirements for success in the globalizing age we inherit are,

1) knowledge,
2) skill,
3) capital.

It is high time that the government which is visualizing 'inclusive growth' realize this truth and work towards an early solution to the teachers strike giving them the benefits suggested by the 6th pay commission.

For those of you'll who're probably unaware, Ayush, who played the youngest 'Jamal' in 'Slumdog Millionaire', resides at a walking distance from my place. It feels great to see him do good work. Now that he's famous, it becomes all the more important for his parents to give him the right education.

NDTV.com: Out of the 2500 flats in Boisar around 1500 will be in the value housing category and the rest will fall into affordable housing. The affordable housing segment offers better margins.
