Climate Change

- Allan Fernandes.

The solution to India’s climate change rests in its Government’s ability to address and solve not just the problem of poverty, but also widespread ignorance, which in some cases is prevalent even amongst the urban elite. The most startling example would that be of the city of Mumbai. Commended as India’s financial, fashion capital, Bollywood ‘B’ town and several other names; its pathetic infrastructure, chemically infested beaches, and polluted atmosphere goes to prove how governance goes for a toss even in the largest and presumably the most modern metropolitan Indian city.

‘Awareness’ and ‘adoption’ are two keywords of prime importance if one were to bring about positive change, in this context. Making people ‘aware’ of what they should be doing, and encouraging them to ‘adopt’ sustainable practices in daily life, can go a long way in improving the lifestyle of people in general and eventually their surrounding.

For this to happen it is equally important that New Delhi get rid of political meddling at the grass-root level and encourage responsible leadership. Democracy of today is not a utopian society, nor a Marxist ideology. It functions under a regulatory framework of elected representatives. But if the system itself is corrupt, there’s nowhere to go. You and I can keep advocating of everything ‘good’, but if those who should be listening themselves are ‘bad’ – we’re left in lurch.

One of the most fantastic examples of good governance comes from the South Indian states of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The former achieving the highest literacy rate and the latter’s State Government’s recent ‘Kalaignar Housing Scheme’ initiative to provide free individual community-housing facility to 21,00,000 hutment dwellers by 2016 is a commendable initiative.

Another prime example is that of Times of India Lead India campaign winner R. K. Misra, who’s currently championing the cause of co-operative dairy farming by encouraging entrepreneurial urge in a rural Uttar Pradesh village.

It is very essential to understand that when we talk about climate change in India we’re talking about more than 600+ million people who don’t even have a proper toilet to sit and shit (UN Report). Which is to say most Indians are least bothered about their actions that cause environmental damage. What they’re more concerned about is their own survival. Therefore reiterating my aforesaid focus points of ‘awareness’ and ‘adoption’, I believe is the only means of solving the problem of man-made climate change in India.

Farbod Khoshtinat - Democracy Video Challenge 2010

ATTN: Mr. Democrat from Iran.

The Democracy Video Challenge, an online competition, asked people around the world to create short videos that completed the phrase, “Democracy is ....”

The Democracy Video Challenge received more than 1600 videos from over 111 countries. A never-ending question that passes through generations, a question that leads to million of answers, and a simple question that asked by a teacher to her students."

"This short film is a representation of what is democracy from the eye of a third world country, in this case Indonesia. As a developing country, Indonesia held a great share for being a democratic country. It leads to many great triumphs, but sometimes the process of democracy had its own turbulence along the way."

"Social gap, poverty, and self-centered leaders still colors the life of democracy in Indonesia. Thus, this short film offers a sophisticated manner to portray the life of democracy in Indonesia: satire."

"Through satire, the film tries to depict a comedic approach to understand the country's problem and what is the country dreaming for the future without becoming too preachy. Using social portrait and cinematic idioms, the film tries its best to emulate the democracy process in various momentum."

"Behind all the problems and challenges that the country faced, theres always a glance of hope for the future. The film offers that a civil system like democracy is belong to the youth. Its only them, that the meaning of democracy can be answered, because democracy is yet to learn."

Democracy is yet to learn by Adhyatmika from Indonesia.

The music in the film is "Skippin' Song" by The Speks published by Noiz Entertainment Ltd, Ireland.

The Democracy Video Challenge, an online competition, asked people around the world to create short videos that completed the phrase, “Democracy is ....”

The Democracy Video Challenge received more than 1600 videos from over 111 countries.
