T-post is the world's first wearable magazine. What? Yeah, you read that right. I was skeptical about "wearing a magazine," but when I got my shirt in the mail, I was ecstatic!

Basically, the editors at T-Post pick an off-beat news topic, write an article and have an artist interpret that news item into a graphic design. The art is printed on the front of the tee and the article is on the inside. SO. FREAKIN. COOL! When I wore my T-shirt yesterday, people left and right complimented me on the shirt and asked where I got it. The explanation was a little lengthy, but usually the reaction was, "Ohhh, cool!"

<img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v290/labellelaa/tpostshirt.jpg" alt="Cease the... Although I am a little fishy about the timing of the interview, I think it was much needed. Riri sat there in her cream-white turtleneck dress, looking like Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct, and talked about the night she got abused by then boyfriend Chris Brown, including the events that followed. You know, where she decided to get back with him and then realized that was a dumb decision. Either way, I'm proud of her for standing up for herself and speaking out about the incident. So many girls are in abusive relationships and are either too scared to leave, think they can change their lover (via themselves or Maury Povich's bootcamp) or are blinded by love.

(About to get really personal) The latter, my friends, holds true to an ex-best friend of mine, who decided that her occasionally mentally and physically abusive boyfriend was better for her than her only best friends. I know you're thinking, "Ex-best friend? You should be there for her." Well, I/we (her best friends) tried. She changed and cut us out of her life. Well, he changed her and brainwashed her into believing that he was the only person who truly "loved" her. Ha. But before this, when she decided to officially break it off with him, I was there giving her 150% of my support. However, she went crawling back to her ugly (inside and out) boyfriend behind my back and didn't have the guts to talk to me about why. Sure I would have not agreed with the decision, but I'm a true friend and support my friends. Despite how stupid their decisions are. I don't know what she's up to, nor do I really care. It's amazing how you think you know someone, but you really don't. Oh well.

Point being, abuse can happen to anyone. And when it happens, run, because if he hits you once, he will do it again.

Moving on, what do you think of Riri's blonde hair?

xoxo

If I Celebrated Halloween...

I would have worn the above! Except, I was cooped up in my dorm room most of the weekend coughing, sniffing and doing school work. YAY. Fortunately all of my school work is done. On the other hand, I have a sore throat from all the coughing I've done. Needless to say, I didn't just do school work on Halloween. My friends whisked me away from my work to watch "Orphan" after I baked some sugar cookie goodness.

That aside, anyone who knows me knows I'm a huge Arthur fan. Seriously. Arguably, Arthur is the last wholesome cartoon on TV. When I can, I try and catch the lovable Aardvark on PBS. Watching an episode of Arthur allows me to revert back into my childhood days, where I would rush home from school, grab a grape Juicy Juice and plop on my couch--envisioning myself as part of the Elwood City gang. Ah, thooooose were the days.

xoxo

ALDO Addiction

I logged onto my computer yesterday morning to do some quick NY Times reading before my journalism quiz, and look what ALDO sent me in my e-mail! HOW DID THEY KNOW I WAS OBSESSED WITH THEIR SHOES AND WEDGES?!

And yes, I still use AOL mail.

It's Destiny!
Destiny.

xoxo

Wedge Wants

I'm taking this new found obsession with wedges to a whole new level.

As soon as I get my pay check on Friday, I'm ordering these bad boys from Alice + Olivia for Payless. As months go by, I've been thinking about the future more and more. "Will I pass this one journalism class because my professor is an absolute pompous son of a, who doesn't know how to teach?" Or, "What am I not learning in school that I can learn outside that will help me in the future and land a post-grad job?" These, my friends, are the thoughts that run through my head daily.

Just yesterday I was at my school's Open House speaking to students and parents--I'm a Student Ambassador aka Pride Guide. My school is home of the Pride (don't ask). I stumbled upon a girl who was interested in writing for fashion magazines. I found myself going on a rant about how much I love my school, my internship and well, life. She too was excited, although, her mom seemed more excited to be talking to me. I informed her about the importance of knowing the web when going into magazines, the convenience of going to school in the NYC area, and etc., etc. I then handed her my card, told her to contact me if she had any questions about school or life and sent her and her family on their merry way.

In that moment, as I sat there chatting up a storm in my swishy nylon Pride Guide jacket, it hit me. It's possible to live in both the present and future. How you ask? Well, it's simple! Do things that satisfy both factors of your life. Right now what's most important to me is getting good grades, making sure I graduate on time and establishing my new club: The Hofstra Fashion Club--CHECK OUT OUR SITE. For my future, I'm focusing on things like my writing and my internship(s). In a way, these two things can be seen as a present moment. I'm enjoying writing and my internship.

Mhm. Sounds like the best of both worlds to me.

Goodbye Jeans!

Friday night I ripped my last comfortable pair of jeans. That's right, I said it! I'm sure this is just a phase, but right now I'm in love with wedges. Some of my friends think they are ugly because they are cheating, when I could just put on a pair of "real" heels. PISH POSH! I love wedges because they are so comfortable and chic that I could walk in my shoesies all day! I once walked 11 blocks in NYC in my 3-inch ALDO wedges. That being said, I'm starting a new segment on my blog called, Better As A Wedge! The presentation was filled with lots of "travelers" pieces. All the layering and different patterns are well suited for any adventurous and on-the-go girl! Anyway, I understand the collection, but what I don't get is the Afros. Whenever I look at the photos, I can't help but silently wave to my sort of nappy rooted sistahs above (HEYY!).

This got me thinking about other things...

I would never wear my hair au naturel, meaning in a fro. I don't do Afros. With the exception of my younger years, I never have and I never will. I'm on that "creamy crack" as one girl said in Chris Rock's new movie Good Hair. There are girls who look really nice in fros, but I'm not one of them. That aside, I can't wait to see the movie Good Hair. It uncovers what is considered "good hair" in the black community and explores the ins and outs of the black hair business. Back in middle and high school, I would constantly get braided weave extensions every single summer. I was convinced my hair was growing because of this; until, my sophomore year of high school. When I removed the extensions, I lost about 30% of my hair. I waved bye bye to my growing "good hair". And ever since then, I vowed to never ever get a weave. I haven't. I love my real hair. Sure it may not have that, for the lack of a better term, white-girl-hair bounce, but it's my hair and it's good hair.

xoxo

15 Internships in 4 years

Intern Queen say what?!

At the beginning of one of my journalism classes, a classmate of mine pulled up the Ed2010 web page and said out loud, "This girl did 15 internships!" With my eyes wide open and jaw dropped, I said, "WHAT?!" I went on the Ed-site and couldn't believe what I was reading. Lauren Berger, aka, the Intern Queen managed to complete 15 internships in 4 years. I became overwhelmed with a mixture of emotions! I was astonished because seriously, how does someone complete 15 internships in 4 years(?); I was embarrassed because I thought my internship track record was pretty impressive (guess not); I was confused because, I wondered where her college life came in. I know I am a very busy college student. I barely have time to blog anymore! Let me digress. In between school, being a Resident Assistant, my extracurricular activities, internship, and somewhat existing social life, I find myself sleep deprived and relying on my weekends to be the lazy bum I've always wanted to be. But then, to be fooled because my weekends give me a false sense of reality. I wake up at 8am 6 days a week. That's 6 days a week of early days and late nights. Back on topic, I was excited because I think it's pretty cool that someone managed to do that and was turning it into sweet career; she helps young adults get closer to their future with internships.

The Intern Queen offered up some great interning advice! Check it out on Ed2010.com.

Well, please excuse me as I try to get in at least 5 hours of shut eye. So as I checked what classes I needed to take in order to graduate on time, reality began to set in. I have very few classes until I'm done with school (!!!). Soon, this blog won't be about "College" anymore. Okay, so I have a year to blog about this subject matter, but I'm a fan of looking towards the future; sue me.

I know I keep saying I'll be back to my normal blogging habits and then I don't blog, or I blog once a week. I just feel like this past week was just so freaking hectic. Hm. You know what, may be this is just how the year is going to be. Hectic, hectic, hectic! I love my university with all my heart, but with recent not-so-flattering media attention we've gotten, I'm keeping my lips shut. If you couldn't guess it, I'm studying print journalism and women's studies. Power to the female!

Do you believe in soulmates?
Yes, very much so. I have my parents to blame for that. I truly believe my parents are soulmates; they met when they were 16 and have been together ever since. Growing up I never wasted time with guys, who I didn't think were my potential soulmate. Granted this left me very single for most of my life, and I'm sure some people will say that I'm crazy and that I should just date to date and test the waters, but I believe when I meet the one, I'll know.

How can people get invited to fashion related events?
The people who get invited to fashion related events usually have some influence on the industry itself. Whether you're a famous Blogger, Editor, Buyer, Designer or even a Celebrity, you may get an invite. Or, becoming some form of a Fashion Intern may help too!

Did you start doing fashion internships in high school, or did you begin in college? Is that even really possible to be an intern in high school unless you have connections?
I began interning in College. After all, I didn't really know where to start in high school. Interns are allowed to be from high school, but I'm sure those are special circumstances. Noel @ MissCouturable did it and so did Colby Jordan--Phillip Lim's super teen intern.

I'm going to be interning at Seventeen this fall. It's a different department than you interned with, but I was wondering if you had any advice?
My only advice is that you be yourself and don't be afraid to voice your opinion (in a polite and demur manner of course) and be enthusiastic 100% of the time. If they tell you to go make copies, act like you live for making copies. And if you truly love where you're interning, this shouldn't be hard!

xoxo

Ask Secretisa: What's your favorite book?

Growing up I hated reading. But now, I don't mind it so much. In fact, I kind of enjoy it. Over the summer I read 4 or was it 5(?) books. I don't remember, ha! I might have also not liked reading as a kid because my dad always tried to stuff any book down my throat. I'm not rebellious by nature, but if you have your father constantly chastising you for not reading, you won't want to read. Nevertheless, one reader asks, "What's your favorite book?"

My favorite book is "The House on Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros. I first read it my senior year of high school and have been in love with it ever since. It's a series of vignettes (small stories w/ in a novel) about a girl who moves to Mango Street with her family and tries desperately to get out, but soon wonders if she can actually escape it. It's a true darling book with deeper meanings and is an easy read. I recommend it to anyone who isn't a fan of reading. We're set to read it this semester in my Women's Studies class, and I can't wait to revisit the exciting stories Cisneros creates.

xoxo

Guess who's back?

And I'm back! This past week I've been a fashion show hopping Intern and news media dodging college student. I felt like the universe felt the need for my week to just be one whirl wind of incidents and adventures. That being said, I realized that I never had the proper blog intro to my junior year.

In a year and a half, I'll be heading off into the "real" world. I remember my junior year of high school like it was yesterday. Big things happened/happen junior year. In high school I got my license, joined the National Honor Society (still wondering if being in it helped me get into college), went to prom and began looking at schools. As for college, the only big thing that may happen this year is turning 21 (aside from my new fashion club) and becoming an adult. I thought turning 20 was terrifying, but 21?! YIKES!

Needless to say, in between my hectic life, I still found the time to buy some new kicks. I'm devoted to Aldo shoes. I wonder if it's possible for me to wear nothing but Aldo shoes from now on?

<img style="cursor: pointer; width: 542px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_-NVZ97eqKaQ/SrcKYiAKltI/AAAAAAAAAsc/kxl9qCQHtb4/s400/sssshoe.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5383783296105354962" 800="" border="0" />
What do you think?

xoxo

P.S. I won't be attending because I stayed up until 1:30 in the morning editing the school's newspaper, and then an extra four hours writing a 1,000 word essay. I've also been up since 8:30 a.m having classes back-to-back until well, now. Needless to say, I will be there in spirit. I need my rest if I want to be fierce and focused for my return to the teeny Holy fashion Grail. We'll be covering NYFW, so check out TeenVogue.com for all the scoops on the Spring 2010 collections.

I'm fleeing for the next week. For the past couple of weeks, my life has been nothing but Resident Assistant and back-to-school shenanigans. But I'm back and on the blogging attack. I might be speaking too soon though. New York Fashion Week starts on Thursday September 10, 2009, I return to my internship on Friday September 11, 2009, and until NYFW ends, I will be running around like a chicken with its head cutoff in platform heels.

Continuing with my question and answer series, one reader asks, "What are your wardrobe essentials?"

Everyone has a different style, so a person's style has a lot to do with what they consider their wardrobe essentials. Since I consider myself somewhat a person with a crazy/conservative sense of style, I'd say my must-haves include a high waisted skirt, flowy top, jeans and statement shoes.

High Waisted Skirt
A skirt is an easy way to go from casual to dressy. Wear a high waisted skirt and you'll pump up the edge on your girly look! Skirts are also more versatile than pants. I'm in love with these picks from College Candy.

Flowy Top
I'm all about flowy tops. My mid section is one of the areas on my body that I am extremely insecure about. To hide my imperfections, I wear a flowy top. I'm a fan of belting it because it gives me shape while hiding the extra baggage.

Jeans
Sure I've lost all hope in jeans. But when I find a good pair, I wear and tear them to death. Jeans are an essential in my wardrobe simply because the right one can be worn with anything. Enough said.

Statement Shoes
Someone once said, "You can judge a person by the shoes they wear." I happen to agree with that statement. Next time you're out and about, look at the shoes of the people walking past you. A shoe can say a lot about a person. That's why most of the shoes I own are unique and one of a kind. Also, a shoe that makes a statement can save an outfit and turn an outfit from simple to simply chic!

xoxo

Ask Secretista: What is your favorite childhood memory?

As you know, I've decided to follow in the footsteps of other Bloggers and do a question and answer series.

What is your favorite childhood memory?

Hmm. My favorite childhood memory is the first day of school. I love the days leading up to it and I love going Back-to-School shopping! I pretty much remember what I wore on the first day of school for every single school year since I was 8 years old. My favorite outfit was in 3rd grade when I wore a leopard print skort, a tan T-shirt with a leopard print heart in the middle of it, and my pearly white Mary Janes. Wow. Even thinking about it now makes me want to recreate it. And with a new semester right around the corner, I can't help but think, "What will I wear on my first day of classes?"

xoxo

People in Fashion Don't Eat

Double Chocolate Donut

Oreo Outrageous

Pish posh! A comment a friend recently made has stuck in my mind. He said, "People in fashion don't eat." Could he be right? I don't know. But I do know that I work in fashion and I LOVE to eat. Probably too much for my own good. Needless to say, if it was between an expensive chic boot, which would leave me not being able to afford to properly eat for a couple weeks, I would shamefully choose to purchase the boot.

Last night validated my love for all-things yummy (and chocolate). An outting to Dunkin Donuts with my best gal pals resulted in me engulfing a double chocolate donut and an ice cream concoction that was befittingly named Oreo Outrageous. I am shocked that I didn't go into a diabetic coma, but my belly is fully satisfied.

The pressure to be thin will always be the elephant in the room in the fashion industry, but I know that as long as I am healthy and taking care of my body, I won't have to worry about starving myself to achieve the perfect build. Although, eating a donut and ice cream isn't exactly helping my figure, ha!

What do you think?

Don't forget to ask Secretista!

xoxo

Ask Secretista

Being that I'm heading back to campus in three days (!!!) and will be busy until school starts, I've decided to do what other Bloggers have done and have a question and answer series! As you can see in this post done by a cute new blogger, I love answering questions. And the one thing some may not know about me is that I love mentoring. Just like my hero Atoosa Rubenstein, I love helping teen girls and will probably help teen girls until eternity. I get countless e-mails from girls asking me questions about fashion, internships and other life issues and I think it's time I share my answers with everyone.

Leave your questions in the comment area (comment link by this post's title), and I'll answer as many as I can. Ask away lovelies! I can't wait to read the questions!

I'll begin answering the questions on August 24, 2009.

xoxo

Lost Scent of Identity

Pink Sugar; Bloom by Reese Witherspoon; Fancy by Jessica Simpson

As long as I can remember, I've been obsessed with having a signature scent. When I was in Elementary School, it was whatever Juice Bar (remember those?!) kiddie perfume that was sweet smelling at the time. In my mallrat years aka Middle School, I raided Bath & Body Works. I especially loved the Moonlight Path and Warm Vanilla Sugar fragrances. And in High School, I fell head-over-heels for Pink Sugar from Aquolina. I did test the scented waters with every one of Britney Spears' perfumes, as well as, Hilary Duff's With Love (which I still love), but remained faithful to Pink Sugar. The sugary perfume just smells so darn yummy! When I walk into a room, people know that I have arrived because that's MY smell. I love being told I smell like cotton candy. It makes me feel sweet! Nevertheless, I concurred that any sugary and vanilla-y scent smelled dandy on me.

But in recent months, my pops bought me a new perfume. And ever since that first spritz of Fancy by Jessica Simpson, I've been having a Lost Scent of Identity. I'm not a teenager anymore, so I wonder if Pink Sugar is still an appropriate scent for me? Should I spray myself with something that's more mature? Or should I hold on to my youth with a smell so vibrant and sweet-rendering like Pink Sugar? I just don't know. Throw Bloom by Reese Witherspoon into the mix (a gift a-la my internship) and now I'm really confused. Bloom smells like flowers. I'm not a big fan of flowers (I have allergies), but I'm open to new fragrances. So as I sit here staring at the three scent selections on my dresser, I can't help but wonder, does our scent define who we are?

What's your scent?

xoxo

Fashion's Night Out 2009 Tees

In exactly one month, Fashion's Night Out 2009 will commence! For those who aren't in the know, Fashion's Night Out is "a global initiative to promote retail, restore consumer confidence, and celebrate fashion." Vogue editions around the world will be coordinating events in their respective areas. Woohoo! It'll be one big fashion partay around the globe! I'm super excited about this because I think it's time the world take note of how much fashion contributes to our economic system.

Photo: TeenVogue

In addition, I can't wait to get my hands on one of the FNO tees. I wasn't going to try and get one because I figured they would sell out fast, but once I read that proceeds from the T-shirts would be donated to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, I knew I HAD to snag one. A full directory of retailers selling the shirts will be available on August 17th, but you can begin checking it out now.

Viva fashion!

xoxo

P.S. Say it ain't so Toto, say-it-ain't-so!). I recently received a by-the-textbook tip from the people at Textbooks.com.

"The biggest mistake that many students make when purchasing their textbooks is that they wait too long. The secret to reducing the cost of a student’s textbooks is to shop early when the used books are plentiful. Used books save money – big money, especially when the used books are bought online on sites like Textbooks.com."

Textbooks by far are one of the biggest expenses a college kid can have next to food and living. I remember my freshman year, I spent a total of $500 on books--my fall semester. $200 being my Chemistry book for the Chemistry class that I dropped a week later. A paperweight that my school wouldn't buyback because the creators of the horrid textbook were already working on a newer edition! HOW DARE THEY?! If only I knew about Textbooks.com back then... That's $200 I will never get back. $200 I could have spent on two to three pairs of shoes from Aldo or on a spiffy winter coat from Zara. Woops, I already did that.

Luckily for me, I have a lot of older friends who are the same major as me and relinquish their textbooks to the Secretista Book Fund (that I just made up) when they are done. If I don't already have the book in my possession, I order them online. The books at my school's bookstore are just too darn expensive! So fellow college comrades, yell hooray for a site like Textbooks.com.

xoxo
