Let's review - Adele cleaned up at the 2012 Grammys. Why? Perhaps best put by Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters - the music needs to come from your heart and your head. Adele - no glitz, no glammer, no fire and flaspots, no strings hanging from the ceiling, no weird and wild costumes, no humping by scantily clad gyrating dancers - just melodic thoughtful lyrics sung with feeling and a genuinely gifted voice - heart and head. Not only is she talented, but she is genuine - the real deal. She accepts her award for Best Album and announces to millions of viewers that she has some snot coming out of her nose. I am so delighted that she won, not just because of her music, but because of her honesty. She hasn't been diverted by the junk fame piles onto musicians. She was in love, got her heart broken and sang the story - without all the eye candy diversions.
Some of the other winners that never even made it to the telecast were: Jazz Instrumental Album: “Forever,” Corea, Clark & White, Improvised Jazz Solo: “500 Miles High,” Chick Corea. You would think one performance by Chick Corea rather than two dancing skits by Chris Brown. If jazz was too complicated for the average listener perhaps these winners would have offered a little more variety to the stage: Reggae Album: “Revelation Pt. 1: The Root of Life,” Stephen Marley, or Pop Instrumental Album: “The Road From Memphis,” Booker T. Jones, or Blues Album: “Revelator,” Tedeschi Trucks Band. It would seem the fans, who obviously bought a boat load of albums by Adele, are more sophisticated in their appreciation of the art of music than the producers of the television event. Hopefully, the Grammy producers of the 2013 event will demand that all artists perform live - even if they have to dance a lot. Rihanna, Chris Brown used to date - perhaps they also shared a lip-syncing coach. But the best lip-syncing goes to Taylor Swift who sings a sing where she complains nobody sings live anymore - not too swift if you ask me. Adele made it about the music again - not the red carpet poses in gowns missing material; not the outfits no escort would be caught in a motel lounge in; not the Crayola colored hair; but the MUSIC!
I thought Bruno Mars showed that he is loaded with talent and is up and coming even though he is already there. He would have made James Brown proud. The harmonies of The Civil Wars (strange name) were spot on and should have lasted longer than the look-at-me performance offered by Swift. Jennifer Hudson's tribute to Whitney Houston was masterful, emotional and a true compliment to popular hit by Houston. Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson were good vocally, but lacked chemistry, as did Tony Bennet and Carrie Underwood. Sir Paul McCartney showed he can still write great love songs and can still rock the house with the closing performance. His choice of Joe Walsh on acoustic gutiar was smart, given Eric Clapton performs on the record. Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt were first rate, both showing thier vocal talent and feel for a good song. Katy Perry seemed to want to show she could be a welter-weight, lip-syncing Lady Gaga. The Beach Boys' harmonies were fabulous, but I thibk there were quite a few more singers than original members, and Brian Wilson dropped the end of a verse early - but they have been around so long most of the Staples Center crowd wasn't born when they had their first hit.
Nicki Minaj - what can I say? - a failed attempt at theatrics and anti-catholic exorcist crap with no end game. I was confused by The Boss' opening song "We Take Care of Our Own." It was, I thought, a sequal to "Born in the USA" but I didn't get it. Now that I have looked at the lyrics, I see that he was not talking about government coming to the aid of those in need - the reference to the flag is what threw me - but I see he was referring to people taking care of one another. Now I can't wait for some politico to adopt the song as their theme at their rallies. Break out the lawyers, Bruce.
That's about all I call recall from the 2012 Grammys. Perhaps next year I'll have wine instead of Buffalo wings - lots of wine.
RIP Whitney Houston, Etta James and the myriad talent lost, but not forgotten!

Oregon - a state that, were it in the physical locatiion of New Mexico, I would move to in a heart beat, has reared its Republican ugly head (and one wayward Democrat) and proposed criminalizing the organizing of civil disobediance: Oregon's Senate Bill 1534- being debated today, would criminalize what they call, "aggravated solicitation applicable to use of electronic communication to solicit two or more persons to commit specific crime at specific time and location."
This is the state I always held up as an example of individual rights and freedom without excessive and unwarranted government intervention. No longer - the state that has the hutspah to ban styrofoam has the inane wherewithall to consider a bill that would make it felonious to gather people through social media - you know - FB, Twitter, et al, if during the gathering a crime were committed. So, if Occupy Oregon happened, and I summoned people to a place and time to protest and a crime - that crime being civil disobediance -were committed, I could be held responsible. That's fascist crap.
According to Wikipedia: The earliest recorded incidents of collective civil disobedience took place during the Roman empire. Unarmed Jews gathered in the streets to prevent the installation of pagan images in the Temple in Jerusalem. Some modern day examples of civil disobediance may include: trespassing at a nuclear-missile installation, bringing medicine to Iraq without permission of the government, sitting in a tree to prevent it from being chopped down, gathering at sit-ins to protest Monsanto's alteration of life. By summoning friends to aprticipate in these events, I could be arrested and jailed in Oregon. I thoug republican wanted smaller government with less interference in in Americans' personal lives - oh wait - corporations don't want to be Occupied. Enter big brother to save the day - even in a progressive state like Oregon. What a perfect place to start - if they can pass it there, they can pass it in every state - then they will ask homeland security to monitor every tweet and posting so they can protect the interests of their contributors - the human corporations.
I hope the good people of oregon fight this and get rid of these crooked politicians, drugged by the money they recieve and replace them with people who believe capitalism should have a conscience.
Of course, to get around their stupid law, should it pass, one would simply invite the masses to gather one at a time.

While watching the repulican cage fighting, I can't help but feel a sense of desperation across the board as the rhetoric ratchets up and the mud slinging and name calling continues. Was feeling relieved that my brother is in Florida, while I sit quietly in Arizona. Then our governor seemed to miss having the cameras flashing in her direction and stiuck her finger in the face of the leader of the free world. It doesn't matter what party the President belongs to or if local political yocals don't agree with his or her politics, it is still the most respected political seat in the world. I saw the cartoons go up immediately - one with Governor Brewer protrayed as the Wicked Witch of the West from the Wizard of OZ and another with her illiterate quote explaining her reason for the finger. It seems as though people everywhere are clamouring for their 15 seconds of fame - it used to be 15 minutes, but that was before the internet. This blog is already old news - just thought the topic worthy of mentioning.
Then this guy who claims to represent the enitre republican party - Priebus - compares the President of the United States to the captain of the recently sunk Italian cruise ship. I think you have the right to disagree about pretty near any topic with someone without calling them names - to me that's the class warfare - people who have to revert to name calling to win the favor of others completely lacks class. America is suffering from a lack of class. I remember people talking about actors, sports figures, politicians, co-workers, neighbors and friends as "a class act" or somebody who "had a lot of class." You don't hear that much anymore. So, here's the challege in the future, America - instead of out-mouthing one another with epithets, let's try to out-class each other. Wouldn't that be something? A country where people were proud of their government and their politicians, where trustworthiness and honesty were the words used to describe candidates? When candidates make a claim about another, they should have to state where they got their information from. The same should hold true for all of those phony ads run by super-pacs. Americans should be allowed to know who paid for them and from what source they got their information. There have been enough political careers launched from lies - it's time Americans' votes were fact based. Let's put an end to class warfare and clean up our act America - and let's start at home.

That's all for now . . .

New Song

Listening to his stories brought about a couple lines leading to the beginnings of a new song. The lines came to me while driving down the road. Had to keep repeating them so I wouldn't forget them.
Just finished delivering hard copies of the January issue of the Sedona Excentric - this July will make 24 years. It will be uploaded later today - need a break.
So glad the Iowa Caucus is over - what a suspense-filled evening - wait that was a rerun of Monk. I understand people are not pleased with the lack of progress to improve the middle class status in America, but i just can't find it in my head or heart to blame President Obama for it all. I think he would be hailed if just one crooked banker were indicted.
Amazingly, hundreds of millions of dollars will be spent in the coming months on political contests. I thought there wasn't any money. Apparently, there are hundreds of millions of dollars to toss at politicians to buy their favor. If corporations have that kind of money to buy politicians, maybe they have more to buy jobs.
I firmly believe corporate raiders are secretly hoping Obama wins, because a republican win would fuel the fire that is Occupy Wall Street. Speaking of OCW, perhaps it is time for them to come to agreeance on what goal they would ultimately like to achieve. Here's hoping spring comes soon, bringing warmer weather and fresh bodies.
The "nothing to kill or die for / and no religion, too" became "nothing to kill or die for / and all religions true."
Unfortunately, as well meaning as Mr. Green was, he missed the sentiment of the line. More deaths have been caused in the name of religion than for any other reason, cause or gain. The impact of the words from "Imagine" asks everyone to do just that - imagine. Imagine there was one less reason to kill or die for - religion - not imagine religions being true to their followers and continuing the hatred and prejudice being perpetuated in churches, cathedrals, mosques, synagogues, chapels and any other place people gather to convince each other that their belief system is the one, "true" belief system favored by God. I believe John Lennon, a man I deeply admire, was, in a very artistic way, asking us to look deeper within and question whether any belief system would ask you to take the life of another. Clearly, if your religion does indeed promote violence, it would serve the universe well for you to Imagine there was "nothing to kill or die for / and no religion, too."
Peace
I am listening to politico arm chair quarterbacks blather incessantly about whether or not we should get or have gotten involved in Libya's struggle for freedom from their vicious dictator and the extent of our involvement or lack of. First, let me give you the names this tyrant goes by and the media uses to identify him . . .
(1) Muammar Qaddafi,
(2) Mo'ammar Gadhafi,
(3) Muammar Kaddafi,
(4) Muammar Qadhafi,
(5) Moammar El Kadhafi,
(6) Muammar Gadafi,
(7) Mu'ammar al-Qadafi,
(8) Moamer El Kazzafi,
(9) Moamar al-Gaddafi,
(10) Mu'ammar Al Qathafi,
(11) Muammar Al Qathafi,
(12) Mo'ammar el-Gadhafi,
(13) Moamar El Kadhafi,
(14) Muammar al-Qadhafi,
(15) Mu'ammar al-Qadhdhafi,
(16) Mu'ammar Qadafi,
(17) Moamar Gaddafi,
(18) Mu'ammar Qadhdhafi,
(19) Muammar Khaddafi,
(20) Muammar al-Khaddafi,
(21) Mu'amar al-Kadafi,
(22) Muammar Ghaddafy,
(23) Muammar Ghadafi,
(24) Muammar Ghaddafi,
(25) Muamar Kaddafi,
(26) Muammar Quathafi,
(27) Muammar Gheddafi,
(28) Muamar Al-Kaddafi,
(29) Moammar Khadafy,
(30) Moammar Qudhafi,
(31) Mu'ammar al-Qaddafi, and
(32) Mulazim Awwal Mu'ammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Qadhafi.
As it that weren't enough, he also goes by the following titles:
(1) Dean of the Arab rulers,
(2) King of kings of Africa, and
(3) Imam of Muslims.

How's that? We not only can't find a six-foot-plus Arab on dialysis, but now we can't agree on what spelling to use to name yet another sociopath that, by the way, world governments have tolerated for more than 40 years. I wonder if the Mayan people ever vacationed in the Middle East or North Africa. Could this all just be a calendar snafu? What happened to Persia anyway?
I also recently am inspired by the constant barrage of virtual claims about social media and social marketing. While I am pleased that a large group of people can be assembled in a short period of time to protest, attend a rave or riot against their government, I fail to see the value vs print to inform the public of actual facts and support the dissemination of those facts through advertising.
It seems some CEOs in Arizona have sent a signed letter to AZ legislators asking them to back off immigration attacks through state bills proposed by a few politicians hoping to literally whitewash their inability to raise enough funds to run their state. According to this misguided few, everything that is wrong with Arizona must be the fault of immigrants. After all, if we can pit the poor African Americans against the poor Hispanic Americans, we can keep them from organizing against the wealthy. I don't wish to begrudge anyone's success, but if the soldiers of this nation are protecting the abilities and freedoms of those who need abilities and freedoms to become rich, then they should volunteer their wealth to fund the struggle. If illegal immigrants were gathered and placed on active duty, perhaps some National Guard and Reserve men and women could come home and do what National Guard and Reserve men and women are supposed to do. When the new soldiers have completed 3 years of service to their new nation, they could become American citizens and get an education and continue to contribute to our society.
Anyone priced lettuce lately? Now imagine if white people were picking it. We'd be paying $3 to $4 per head. Then there are grapes, lemons, melons, peppers, tomatoes, nearly every type of fruit and vegetable picked by immigrants. With politicians seemingly trying their best to reduce pay and benefits for middle America, higher priced food is far more painful than educating a child of an undocumented alien.
I always thought it would be interesting to see people with political career desires to be given the same amount of time on radio, television, in print and on the web and let the best person win. But, our Supreme Court Justices have determined that America deserves the best government money can buy. Hopefully, it will all play out like the recent Wisconsin rucus. Maybe Americans will decide they've had enough and realize their government isn't really there to protect them or improve their quality of life, but there to have cushy jobs with great benefits and pensions.
I do feel a little better now that I've ranted. Good luck and God help us, everyone!

Finger pointing has begun, and quotes from politicians, pundits, media hosts and the like are being attributed to the motive of the gunman.
They're all right and they're all wrong. I don't believe it is any one statement or gesture or accusation or threat that causes an unstable gun owner to decide to murder people. I believe it is the fervent fevor of society in general and our acceptance of inane thoughts and gestures.
Juan Williams says you can't blame the rhetoric of the right for the Tragedy in Tucson. He's right. But, that doesn't mean there wasn't an influence from the Palin crosshairs and Nevada's Engle who suggested her constituents exercise their 2nd Amendment Rights and take out Harry Reid. Of possible influence was the ad that Giffords herself posted toting an automatic rifle. And the Mama Bear statment of don't retreat, reload.
Put those thoughts and images in the twisted mind a derranged gun owner on the edge and maybe he decides it's his responsibility to take out this dangerous politician who opposes his views.
The mentioning of poilitical rhetoric comes in play because a Congresswoman was shot, an attempted political assasination, but hundreds of people are shot every day for anger, love, jealousy, drugs, money, spite, revenge, initiation, sport, and nobody mentions political rhetoric.
While watching footbal games this weekend I was struck by the insensitive nerve of two commercials in particular, both by Bud Light Beer. One showed a driver waiting for his truck while mechanics stole his cargo and partied under the bay, lying to him about his truck's problem and continuing with the celebration. The second involved a couple of thugs holding hostages and making wild demands because they found Bud Light. It sounds innocent enough an is made humorous by thie outrageous requests, but the fact remains that in order to take hostages you must be committing a crime and have weapons to keep the hostages detained. I realize these are meant to be humorous and appealing to the sophomoric audience watching the ball games, but, as with some explicit video games, we tend to desensitize to viewers and users.
It is far different to gobbly things with Ms PacMan and have a frod dodge in and out of traffic than to reward points for shooting cops or causing bodily harm to women.
Could these commercials and games be contributing to the violence in America? Who knows?
As an alleged civilized society, we are responsible for all of our actions, including our verbiage. If one attributed every thought to being a prayer, perhaps we could begin to offer words of understanding, acceptance and compassion rather than threateing words of contempt, anger and discontentment; We can begin to see our opponents as jopponents and not enemies.
Someone has to step up. Someone needs to lead the march for civility, not just for women or black men or Christians or gays, but for all humankind. We need to Think Universally, Act Globally!
Peace! Namaste! Shalom! Ho'oponono!

It's been a while. A lot has happened around the world - floods, earthquakes, volcano eruptions, oil spills - myriad natural disasters and tragic stories. Some tragedies are not natural but worthy of mention - a Mosque a couple of blocks from an attack in New York, the World Trade Center. More than 90 countries lost citizens September 11, 2001. This horrific and cowardice attack was carried out by an extremist group of radical Islamic fundamentalists. Since then, many Americans seem to want to hold all Muslims responsible. I have trouble with that. As a recovering Catholic, I ponder the accusations from some that all Catholics are bad because of the actions of some of their priests, or their relation to the slaughters of the varius Crusades or their role in the Spanish Inquisition or the Norman Conquest. Some believe Catholics click their heels three times and say, "There's no place like Rome." How about those Episcopalians, allowing homosexual clergy? Will some contend that all Episcopalians are or will be homosexual? If so, let's deny them the right to build their places of worship. Let's not forget those polygamist Mormons. Most men fantasize about being with more than one woman, but married to more than one! Should we deny them the right to continue their faith and gather to worship in future Tabernacles? How were Buddhists allowed in Hawaii and Japan after they attacked Pearl Harbor? There are 7 Temples listed on Wikipedia, along with 7 Shinto Shrines. Since most Japanese relate to either Buddhism or Shinto, should Hawaii bar their places of worship? Extremists from any group scare me. They are willing to further their agenda at any cost. Sadly, my baby-boomer brothers and sisters seem to be missing from the ranks of the shouters of true freedom - including the freedom for any religion to build wherever they are legally permitted to do so. No wonder Green Day is so popular with today's American youth. I was thinking of standing on a corner with a sign on a pole that reads: God Hates All Protesters! But, I'm afraid too few would get it! Today, I read that Roger Clemens has been indicted by a grand jury for lying to Congress about his personal use of a substance that could have brought potential harm only to himself. I recall military officials lying about arms trades and tobacco company owners lying about the addictiveness and harm of cigarettes and oil barons lying about the safety of their rigs and refineries and NOT ONE of them has been indicted for the line of bull they spewed under oath. People who have directly caused serious harm to their fellow Americans and have even been involved in products or events that have taken lives have walked out of Congress never to be heard from again. But an athelete who juiced to enhance his performance - that's something that can't be tolerated - not in this country. Who does he think he is? He shot a strange substance into his body, bulked up, thew small balls at sultans of swat and possibly lied about gaining an edge. Clemens' greatest guilt is that he just didn't contribute to enough political campaigns. America is embroiled in two wars, facing one of the greatest depressions of all times, unemployment is rampant, people live in constant fear or depression, our climate is changing, our political system is morally bankrupt and we're publicly dragging the multiple Cy Young Award winner to face Congress about steroids! The inmates have finally seized total control of the asylum! I'm thinking of rubberizing all the walls in my home. Then, bouncing off them would leave fewer scars and bruises. If this continues, I may install the tequila cooler I have had my eye on for the past 10 years. I still have hope, clinging perilously onto the swaying branch of reason.

Todrick Hall and Lily Scott - two names only family and friends remember. They were contestants on 2010 American Idol. What a waste of talent. Didn't they know they were entering a popularity contest, whre someone with talent might possibly win, but no necessarily.
American Idol remains the only reality TV show my wife and I watch. Our love for music is the only draw, and we actually talk about the show, before, during and after. Todrick and Lily have musical talent, more than most of the remaining seven and quite possibly the only legitimate competition to Crystal Bowersox besides Lee DeWyze and Sioban Mangus. Following close behind was Lacey Brown. If this group were competing next week I believe the audience would be actually juding a vocal talent competition.
Instead, we are forced to watch a teenage boy gyrate his hips the same to an Elvis song as he does to an inspiration tune about Flying. But, because of his age and the age of the average text voter, he remains alongside the other talent-challended, Tim, who should have auditioned for Glee or an UltraBright commercial. Casey, the Bob Seger of the group is a rock star, just not an Idol. The super-sized brother, Mike, has the gentlest voice among them, but that's his limit - Luther Vandross tunes, romantic balads.
I usually blog, though it's been a while, about social, economical or political issues, but after a show revives memories of performing music and currently being of the age when you want to see everyone to succeed, I felt compelled to vent the frustration viewers create with their selections, which, by the way are often guided by the "judges" especially the musical Machiavelli, Simon Cowell, whose interests seem to be inspired purely by the marketability of each contestant and how much more money he can make off of them.
Let's review, nay, judge, the judges. Randy Jackson - finally learning not to call everyone Dawg and everything he doesn't like, pitchy. His weight loss seems to have given him a new vocabulary - "I just didn't get it." He also seems to favor, "I don't know." Well, Randy a judge has to know. Either the performance was worthy of them returning or it wasn't. Last night he gave us interesting choice and okay karaoke praise to Tim Urban, who butchered an inspriational tune from the Goo Goo Dolls followed by the big pipes appraisal of Aaron Kelly on a song that was way too big for this youngster. It's as if Randy now sets the tone for, okay we need to keep our young viewers tuning in, so let's not bash these guys who shouldn't be here in the first place.
Kara DioGaurdi - a woman who has never met a camera she didn't think loved her. A cardboard cutout with a massive overdressed wardrobe could replace her easily with a recording of "You are in the zone" and "I just don't know who you are." Give me a break. You're not there to know who someone really is or not - you're there to evaluate their vocal ability on that song on that given night. Either it was good or it was bad.
Simon Cowell - the man who single-handedly revived the stock values of Hanes and Fruit of the Loom. How dare he judge someone on their attire? Especially Siobhan, whose wardrobe must be provided by some futurist designer. For vocal purity, nobody comes close to Siobhan, who could benefit from some coaching with her arrangements, but is the only "big pipes" singer on that stage this season. Back to Cowell - it's as though he has resigned as the insensitive pit bull he was when Paula Abdul was there to offer emotional balance. Now, he seems to be calculating what songs he would record with each singer while mildly paying any attention to their performance. Perhaps he is ready to move on.
Ellen DeGeneres - no doubt, the best thing that happened to this show since its debut. Her wit not only entertains and disarms the viewer as well as the contestant, but her ability to hear talent and appreciate diversity places her in a judge's robe of her own. I hope she'll stay.
Each year, my wife and I attempt to guess who the texters will remove from their list of favorites. Let's face it, these are the people who are going to be buying their favorites' tunes, so they should be the ones to decide who it will be. By definition, they crown their American Idol.
People do make careers from reality contests - remember Star Search? How about Britney Spears, Beyonce Knolls, Alanis Morrisette, Justin Timberlake, Norm McDonald, Tiffany, Aaliyah, Brad Garrett, Leann Rimes, Christina Aguilera even Drew Carey and Rosie O'Donnell? All appeared, but didn't necessarily win on Star Search.
If the music gods are watching this year's Idol contest, they are surely amused and amazed by Crystal Bowersox, possibly the purest raw talent to ever step on that stage. Too bad she won't be competing with Lily Scott, who hopefully can forge a successful career like the losers from Star Search.
Wouldn't it be fun to see which judge American viewers voted off?

I'm reminded of lyrics from some songs, "You tell me over and over and over again, my friend, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction," and "We've gotta get out of this place, if it's the last thing we ever do," and "It's the end of the world as we know it, and I feel fine." First, I don't believe anybody has been able to pinpoint and document time. I believe in the guy who said it was all relative. It might be his hair. Anyway, for argument's sake, let's say some people have put together Mayan predictions with biblical prognostications and added them to some notions from I Ching and have determined the end of the world is actually going to happen on December 21, 2012. I think that everyone who accepts this as reality should put their money where their mouths are and buy, buy, buy. They should create and end of the world stimulus package that benefit other believers and non-believers alike, since we're all going at the same time. They should start picking out their outfits for that day, buy luxury items that they otherwise might not be able to afford. Stop paying their credit cards bills (after maxing them out and opening more), their mortgage, their rent, their insurance, their car payments... But wait, what if their employers believe the end is near? They could cut off paychecks or just write bogus checks or pay them with Monopoly money. Then what? What if politicians believe the end is near? They might just stop legislating and sit around and drink and have affairs. Wow - they must already believe it. What if people in Denmark knew? They might senselessly slaughter dolphins and whales for sport. And what about the Canadians? They might serve seal meat as an entree. What if evryone knew? They might chop down the tropical rain forest, or take elephant tusks for trinkets, or wathc animals fight for fun, or eat animals' parts to amke them verile, or kill each other over religious disputes. Imagine the horrible acts people might engage in if they knew the end was near. What if the United States Supreme Court knew? They would make it easy for everyone to own an automatic weapon as a right to protect themselves from the non-believers. Hey, our buying spree might turn into a shooting spree. That's no good. We need shoppers, not shooters. The world's economy could right itself in mere days, if all the believers would simply embrace their faith and shop 'til you drop. After all, it's not the economy, it's not jobs, it's the end of the world, stupid!

Then I thought, what if everyone could be convinced the end is near and they feared meeting their maker for the atrocities they have committed? What if everyone came together and embraced the natural beauty of all life? What if they destroyed all their weapons and worked in peace and harmony?

Then I thought, who am I kidding? The people who believe the end is near are the same people who claim evolution is either a sham, or survival of the fittest is the creed of the day. I'm getting a headache. The end of the blog must be near.

I guess because I recently decided to straighten my teeth I have paid a lot of attention to the smiles of the olympic athletes. It's amazing how almost every athlete's teeth are perfectly aligned and pre-plowed snow white. Are they children of privilege or do they just have ortho-frenetic parents? Either way, I can't help but stare at their pearly smiles, even in defeat. And by defeat I don't mean being judged as a lesser athlete, but rather wiping out on the track with no other contestant within a skate, board or ski length in sight. It's beautiful that we all take a pause from our regular jabbing and sparring and shooting and bombing to watch our young athletes compete for a round piece of metal that they can hopefully cash in for endorcements for products most people could otherwise do without.
Speaking of products, my mentor and friend of yore used to ponder the concept of new and improved taste in pet food products. Who was volunteering to taste this stuff. And while Morrie is on mind, I am reminded of a call from Sedona's newest city manger who used to have copies of the Sedona Excentric mailed to him by our former police chief, Bob Irish. I told him that Irish, though quoted often, never really communicated his thoughts to the paper. Like about seventeen years back when we quoted the chief reporting a rampant increase in crime in Sedona, citing the example of a man stopping in the Basha's parking lot, leaving his driver's window down, exposing 2 season tickets to the Arizona Cardinals on the top of his dashboard. Upon returing to his vehicle, he noticed there were 4 tickets. We also advertised for free singing lessons, from Gregorian chant to Rap, taught in the privacy of your own shower. It makes perfect sense if you think about it. Everybody thinks they can be on American Idol based on their shower volcalizations and their ability to sing along with their car radio blasting at window glass rattling decibels.
Hey, President Obama met with the Dahli Lama, much to the chagrin of China's leaders. What do they fear? Could it be that a whole 10% of their population would convert from Taoism to Buddhism? Let's see, 10% of 1.3 billion is around 1.3 million people. They lose that many people in bicycle accidents delivering Peking Duck and eggrolls annually. Personally, I prefer the eggdrop soup and Cashew Chicken. My wife makes me add tofu. Maybe it's the weight of the tofu throwing off the cyclists. There is an art to leaning to keep your balance when toting tofu laden carry out.
While repairing some damages to my home caused by the December 8 winter-soon storm, I have had the privilege of working with some terrific people, like the guys from Behmers Roofing, John Di Battista and his crew of C J and Sam, and Gus the drywall guy. Local guys who care about the quality of their work at an affordable rate to working Joes.
Well I'm wondering how snowboarding became an Olympic sport, but my age is probably interfering with the processing. Jumping and spinning from a youngster looks like fun, but hardly seem worthy of being deemed an olympian. Perhaps it's not that much different than tossing a long spear or hurling a ball on a chain or bowling a granite stone down an alley with broom handlers chasing it for top position.
We'll see what tomorrow brings. Gotta like that Ono kid, Shani Davis and the team of Mancuso and Vonn.
Meanwhile Taliban leaders are being captured, Haiti is reeling under new storms, Iran is ready to be a free nation and Europe is ready to bail out Greece. Things are good, much better than they could be and we are all sitting one the edge of a tiny planet, forced to hold each other's hold to keep one other from falling off.
What a great world!
That's all for now . . .

Excentric

Surprised that the attacks from politicians have been limited to vile lies about global climate change. What part of Global don't they understand? It's another reminder that the entire world revolves around them and their contributors. Keep waiting for bin laden to claim al qaeda is behind America's northeastern blizzard. Actually, a lot should get done now that hell has frozen over. So, a couple of snowstorms and all the icebergs in Antartica have reformed, all the dead polar bears have come back to life and mankind has had no negative effect on the environment; oh yeah, nature is also responsible for Toyota's auto failures. Maybe nature is the reason for job losses, bank failures, home foreclosures, and stagnant wages - wait - they're right - Human Nature! Is greed human nature or simply a sin? Speaking of greedy sinning politicians, I marveled at the lack of knowledge Newt Gingrich had on the Daily Show when he professed that the shoe bomber was an American citizen. I guess being an Islamic militant from England is closer to be an American than being an Islamic militant from Nigeria. I can see how the skin color could confuse him, after all, his is from Dixie. Dixie, where teabaggers eat their own. Just ask Ron Paul - not conservative enough for a movement he is given credit for starting. Now the southern talking heads are calling for Paul to be replaced, by a true conservative - one who agrees that government is responsible for everything wrong with America and that the politicians they put into office will do their bidding. Then, we'll have a real America, run by the few people with big enough wallets and big enough mouths to tell the majority of Americans what's good for them, as opposed to them now being told what's good for them.
Once in power, things will be set straight - no one will be gay (especially in the military), no religion will be recognized as legitimate besides Christian, no teenagers will have sex before marriage to someone of the opposite sex, there will be no Medicare or Medicaid, no food stamps, no public schools, no voting without passage of tests designed by them, no immigrants, no unions, no foreign trade, no taxes, no public infrastructure (including no highways, police, fire, emergency responders, bridges, mass transit, traffic signals or road signs, no parks, no courthouses, no government buildings, etc.) - everything will be privatized and run by the very CEOs who got bailed out and gave themselves big bonuses.
Gives new meaning to just say no, huh?
Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country. Wow, what rhetoric. It's almost as if the person who spoke those words was just standing in front of a lecturn, using a teleprompter. Let's look at some other presidential quotes: George Washington: "Few men have virtue to withstand the highest bidder;" Thomas Jefferson: "One man with courage is a majority;" John Quincy Adams: "Always vote for principle, though you may vote alone, and you may cherish the sweetest reflection that your vote is never lost;" Franklin Pierce: "We have nothing in our history or position to invite aggression; we have everything to beckon us to the cultivation of relations of peace and amity with all nations;" Theodore Roosevelt: "The only man who makes no mistake is the man who does nothing;" Thomas Woodrow Wilson: "If you want to make enemies, try to change something;" Harry S. Truman: "We need not fear the expression of ideas—we do need to fear their suppression;" Richard Nixon: "A man who has never lost himself in a cause bigger than himself has missed one of life's mountaintop experiences. Only in losing himself does he find himself;" James Earl Carter, Jr.: "The best way to enhance freedom in other lands is to demonstrate here that our democratic system is worthy of emulation;" Ronald Wilson Reagan: "America is too great for small dreams;" George Herbert Walker Bush: "I want a kinder, gentler nation;" William Jefferson Clinton: "We need a spirit of community, a sense that we are all in this together. If we have no sense of community, the American dream will wither;" George Walker Bush: "Recognizing and confronting our history is important. Transcending our history is essential. We are not limited by what we have done, or what we have left undone. We are limited only by what we are willing to do."
I wonder what the teabaggers think of these quotes, both republican and democrat. It would seem each was driven at some time in their term of office by a love of country.
The very first American president talks about virtue and the highest bidder and the current Supreme Court opens American politics to the purses of multi-national corporations, unions, bankers, insurers, and the likes to offer their personal choice for high office. Remember when they used to say, "America, best government money can buy?" The joke is now on us. Fool me twice . . .
An amazing thing happened. After calling the Associated Press to complain about their "close enough" reasoning for putting events IN Sedona instead of NEAR Sedona, I came across a couple of news stories that actually stated the events took place NEAR Sedona. Is somebody actually reading what I write? I didn't expect anyone to listen, never mind react. Maybe there is hope after all. Nah, just a coincidence.
My prayers and good thoughts for those dealing with the blizzard. Keep on digging!

I told him I took offense to yet another report about the October tragedy at Angel Valley as taking place in Sedona - not near Sedona, or around Sedona, or close to Cottonwood, or near John McCain's compound - but IN Sedona. His explanation was that Sedona was the closest city. I informed him he was wrong, in fact, Cottonwood with its recent annexation into the Cornville area made it the closest city. And, if they were using the name Sedona for sensational reference, they should have stated that it was just over the banks of Senator John McCain's houses. He argued the point, though I'm not sure on what premise, and finally just said it was close enough. Close enough. That's what has created a huge credibility problem with the media, corporations and the government. Close enough. Saddam didn't actually possess weapons of mass destruction, but he was close enough to having them that 4,000 plus men and women from the United States and scores others from around the globe had to give their lives. Close enough.

I looked up the website of Angel Valley. In fact, they state in their opening sentence that they are IN Sedona. So, I called them. The woman owning the compound referred to a spot further in the description that it was close to Sedona. I reminded her that the first sentence says IN Sedona. She agreed it may be a little misleading, especially when I told her that reportes were quoting her and saying she was IN Sedona. If she wasn't actually IN Sedona, how was I to know that the quotes that were attributed to her were acurate or just close enough?

When lending institutions deny people the right to refinance their homes or at least renegotiate their payments or restructure their loans, one has to wonder whatever makes them think they have earned the amount of money they reward their owners and upper managers. I don't begrudge anyone for making huge amounts of money. Indeed, some stinkingly wealthy people have done some good in the world with their money. But, to deny struggling, decent Americans the opportunity to maintain some sense of dignity by retaining their most prized possession while stuffing your pockets is obscene and so is any politician that isn't doing everything possible to see those ways are changed. Close enough. The bankers didn't actually set up new lending practices to help struggling Americans, but for many politicians it was close enough.

When our government officials say the proposed health care bill will kill grandma, or take away your medicare or cause your premiums to rise; they know they aren't reading from the actual proposal, but it's close enough to use to scare the bejesus out of Joe the plumber. Palin couldn't really see Russia from her house, but it was close enough. When they say this initiative is going to create1 million jobs - even though the facts show it will only create 985,00, we accept that asclose enough. But whne you are one of the 15,000 who are left unemployed is close enough good enough? When our leaders allow polluters to clean up most of their mill tailings because it brought temporary work to their area, but the pollutants went unseen into an aquifer and the company mining the land thinks it got close enough to the stipulated regulations, is close enough good enough?

Imagine sending missiles into an area an being just a little off target. It hits the house next to the intended target, an innocent family is killed. The bad guys live to kill again. Is close enough good enough? What about when someone is sentenced to death because of an eye witness that picked out someone that looked like the person who actually committed the crime. Now imagine DNA evidence shows the condemend to be innocent. Now imagine it was discovered too late. Now imagine the accused was your brother, or father, or son. Is close enough good enough?

In sports, they have institued replay. Not because the refs were crooked, well not all of them, but because with the kind of money the winning palyers, managers and owners can amass, close enough wasn't good enough. I realize we can't replay every move we make, but we are given an opportuinty with every breath to get better than close enough. We can actually report that the sad event where people lost their lives in October happened at a place outside Sedona, and, as its neighbors, people IN Sedona grieve for their loss and pray for their families and loved ones left behind. IN Sedona, people have the ability to show compassion, love and understanding where needed, not because they exist within the majestic walls of the crimson cliffs, but because, like all other human beings, we possess an innate desire to extend a hand, lend a shoulder or offer an embrace. I imagine the same holds true for Cottonwood residents, who just showed they could be civil about a very unpopular issue - the mago statue.

The leader of Dahn Yoga and creator of the concept of the man-made monolith had many opportunites to admit that though his intentions were grand and sincere, he may have missed the target, and his goal having fallen short, chosen to address the citizens of Cottonwood and proposed to relocate mago, saving face and increasing his credibility. He just didn't get close enough to the people he affected.

Always thought Cape Cod was the only other place on the lower 48 that I could call home besides Sedona. Actually, I live in Cornville, zip code EIEIO. Wouldn't have it any other way. Left Virginia Beach more than 21 years ago. When I talk with friends or family back east I tell them about being stuck in traffic here, which means I had to stop for a cow, quail, roadrunner, feasting raven or some other form of life to clear the road. That hasn't changed in 21 years. Truly, open space is Arizona's greatest asset. Most of the people that come here get that. They go about their lives, tryng to make ends meet and appreciating what nature has to offer. Some, mostly big city folk, who think building and growing Sedona to suit their needs (the things they left behind) want to destroy it all. They usually end up running for some kind of political office. Those who think they can improve on nature have their heads stuck so far up their egos that they will never get it.

On the subject of egos and nature, I feel compelled to address a topic of considerable consternation along the highway connecting Sedona to Cottonwood. A 40+foot statue has been erected by the Dahn Yoga owner, Ilchee Lee. While the area has proven time and tme again to be one of religious and spiritual tolerance, the blonde-haired, porcelain-white faced, Asain-eyed statue has a large group of citizens up in arms. Personally, I celebrate the tloerance and diversity of the area, but I believe the size of the statue calls into question its representation. The structure is called Mago, wich is supposed to represent Mother Earth or Mother Nature. Either way, a dedication to Gaia of such magnitude begs the question why it would be placed in a location that would block the red rock views and natural beauty created by Nature. The conflict bothers me. I feel the statue should have been about 4-feet tall and representative of the Native American Mother Earth. While they do have a giant Kokopelli, I wonder if they realize he represents not only seasonal changes, music, dancing and fertility, but, according to some of my Native friends, his Cassanova michief led Kokopelli to detach his penis and send it down the river to "have his way" with the innocent young maidens who were bathing in the stream. Older depictions showed more of a phallus, long and erect. Catholic priests cut it off and put a sash or cloth around future depictions while Christianizing the Indians.

So now, Kokopelli and Mago share park space alongside Harubang statues, and seven statues representing Jesus Christ, Buddha, Mother Mary, Confucius, Socrates, Dahn Guhn, and Chief Seattle. People of other faiths have commented on the lack of representation of their diety's icon. One even wrote to complain that there wasn't a Torah or the Ten Commandments, as followers of Judaism don't really have any icons. So, it seems many don't want anything there, some want everything there, some don't care what's there, some want the hair color changed, and I want something that actually represents Mother Earth - something that allows me to view and appreciate the original Mother Earth and not a giant piece of clay.

In all fairness, the crosses in the steeples in the Catholic church across the raod are taller, so tall, in fact, I can see Alaska from there.

That's all for now . . .

Excentric

My roof looks great - and for the first time matches the color schemes of the rest of my house. We bought the house 18+ years ago, putting in a bid that was at first refused but accepted after the owner thought it was sold and moved to another area. After that deal fell through, our offer was accepted. Mind you, the house was interesting - no heater, I chopped wood for seven years - so, the owner had to carry the loan with 15% down. He had built the house for his first wife, who died in the house, the Kelly green house with green tiled roof. His next wife hated green, enter beige vinyl siding with matching beige soffit and cocoa brown fascia - and the 30-year green roof. Now the roof tile is brown and makes the house looks great.

December 8th's storm caused some damage and leakage resulting in damage. Already did insurance claim guy, blogged about that experience earlier - wasn't bad. Finding the right windows and door at an affordable rate is a tough task. Hoping all work is finished in 30 days, before my mom-in-law arrives from Cape Cod for 3 weeks. She's a good egg and mellowing with age. Actually, she's one of the few relatives I really like. Maybe it's because she listens to your likes and dislikes and almost always finds something to bring you that you are sure to enjoy - whether it be food, cooking tools, house things, like holiday trinkets and candles. For a couple of years she was involved in helping me decorate our house as the one with the tackiest Christmas lights and displays. We won for years, hands down. Hoping to pass those tools to a nephew with a sense of humor.

Heard from a dear old friend from North Carolina. We used to play music together in Woodbridge, Virginia and then years later in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. We went to rival high schools and didn't care. We created harmonies to Catholic hymns at Sunday mass. We were roommates once, along with his older brother. I learned a lot from those two. As time passed, I felt more the teacher and continue to enjoy our relationship. You know, you tell your blood relatives you love them, and you really do, but not usually because of how they are, but who they are. By that, I mean how they are around others - children, cats, dogs, plants, older people, strangers, relatives, friends. It's how we are that defines who we are.

An example: I was taking my wife to the dentist a hundred miles from our home. Six miles into the trip, I run out of gas - my car - my responsibility. Now the computer says I have 102 miles before I'm in need of fuel. The fuel gauge itself reads over an eigth of a tank - and we stall - on the highway, nothing, bupkiss. I limp to the side of the road. She gets out, calls a neighbor, asks her to meet her to take her to her car and starts walking - cool as a cucumber. How she was at the time made we love who she is. There are always going to be myriad obstacles tossed our way in a variety of sizes, shapes and intensities. How we are about those everyday events defines who we are. I have been making a pool of friends based on how they are. Some I've known for a very long time, some I've not, others I have yet to meet and am looking forward to the experience.

Cardinals got spanked today, but that was to be expected. All the psychics are putting other people's money on the Saints to go all the way. I have liked them since the few fans they had at a time of continuous losing streaks would wear paper bags over their heads at the games and called the team the Aints. I guess I have always been a supporter of the underdog. I was so used to being the underdog, that my affection for the blue collar grunt with a pipe dream earned my salvo of cheers. The winds of victory for the Aints looks good this season since they caught a Brees. Way too poetic for late night.
I had little respect for Pat Robertson and Rush Limbaugh before their inane voluntary mental discharges today regarding the deadly natural disaster in Haiti. My wishes for the best possible outcome goes out the living and dead, trapped and wandering, poor and befuddled. I have always found it spiritually contradictory to wrap oneself in the shrowd of Jesus while spewing hateful intollerances of others of differing religions, races or political parties. A good friend recounted a story of growing up in a small Texas town about Christian people who sang, "Jesus loves the little children...red and yellow, black and white, they're all precious in his sight." I guess it may have sounded biased to sing, "Jesus loves the Christian children...red and yellow, black and white, if they're Christian they're all right." But that's what Pat Robertson and Rush Limbaugh spew - a genuine disdain for anyone who doesn't follow the tenants they chose as their reality.

Sunday at World Fellowship service in Cottonwood, Dr. Rev. Sue chose to repeat a thought we shared and a quote I had written in the Sedona Excentric a couple of years back..."What if some, or all of everything you thought to be true was wrong." As a nation, we don't seem to deal with "what ifs" well. We accept a premise, theory, axiom or postulation as fact or truth and then seek out others who agree. The more people who sign on, the easier it is to contol those who refuse, for they are the minority and not the believers of the accepted truth. Remember the confrontation between Galileo and Cardinal Bellarmino? - we're havin' an inquisition. Fortunately, many baby boomers in America are asking questions again, this timewithout fear of shunning or retribution from their government or loved ones and close friends who desire to stay the course.

Something else I enjoyed about working with Morrie (see previous blogs) was his love for the unknown and libertarian style of religious thought. We called ourselves Agnonstics because we knew there was something greater than human life - there just has to be. I mean, if this is the best the universe had to offer, climate change here we come. I heard the president of ASU is coming to NPR. The plug for the show included results from a poll that showed college grads don't have much of a desire to stay, work and play in Arizona, and Arizonans value the open space, terrain and environment as their greates assets. Someone should share that information with the Sedona City Council, a group seemingly hell bent on making sure land be used for whatever purpose may come along as long as that purpose isn't preservation. Many don't know that Pine Valley in the Village of Oak Creek was actually traded by the Forest Service for Florida swamp land. Now the Forest service did need that land to extend their Evergalde protection, but Pine Valley? Wise ranchers (actually land barons) are working the same magic in Seligman for General Crook Trail area land.

The same friend who recited the Jesus loving all the children song confessed that The Matrix was her favorite movie. Sadly, the media, in cooperation with major corporations and some government muckamucks have made it a reality in America. People are either ill-informed or uninformed, sometimes by choice, but usually by being force fed the crap the pruducers' owners decide to unveil under the guise of important breaking news. For years, everything from the crime rate, to identity theft, to the economic collapse was being blamed on illegal aliens. But not just any illegals, only those from south of the border who speak Spanish. Good thing that America never had a large group of British or French or Dutch or German or Italian or Irish or Polish or Russian or Asian enter without proper paperwork and visas. Otherwise, there may have been some negative assertions made of those people. I'm always amazed at how few people I meet are Native Americans, except of course for the Native Americans. Now there was a group of people with a bad immigration policy. Good thing they were so trusting. Sign here! A friend of mine from Australia once told me that they got the best deal - they got the British prisoners, we got the Puritans.

Mentioned Morrie a couple of times. His name was Morris Horowitz, founder of the Sedona Excentric. My wife and I had moved from Virginia Beach, VA to Lake Havasu City thinking we still needed to be around water. Havasu was hell- not just because in the time we lived there, April 27 1987 until April 27 1988, was it one of the hottest climates in North America, but because I was managing a restaurant/bar and working like hell for a nominal wage. We moved to the Village of Oak Creek after landing a job at Los Abrigados. I soon realized I wasn't cut out for restaurant management. The higher ups may have realized the same earlier than I. Anyway, I applied for a job schlepping furniture for Canyon State Moving Company. They offered a job the next day. I asked if they were as hard up as I was, for surely they must have noticed that with my build, I was probably only good for lifting the couch cushions. The office manager Sasha Valckuck laughingly confessed that they indeed were that desperate. I worked for a few months, lost weight and added muscle, but knew there was no way I would become a master furniture hauler.

While talking with Sasha one summer morning I mentioned reading a column in the local paper called "Ask the Record Man." I found it amusing, as I had been in rock and roll bands in Virgina for many years. I suggested the column's author was posessed with a wicked wit, but was a bit of an asshole and I would like to meet him. She said his name was Morrie and she would introduce me the next time he dropped her off at work, as they lived together. She assured me my apology was not necessary, for Morrie could at times be an asshole. She pointed me out the next morning, he waved and drove off. My wife and I were invited by Sasha to join her and Morrie for cocktails at Judi's Restaurant that Friday night. I wasn't sure what to expect, but as Morrie and I sat at the bar, drinking, the discussion turned to music. It turns out that Morrie had worked for Decca records in Michigan. Our backgrounds led to an evening of drinks and laughter and more drinks and musical trivia challenges and more drinks. Morrie was the first non-politician I had met that became more lucid the more he drank.

He tried to impress me by announcing The Strawbs were the band with the best harmonies and I back at him declaring I owned their only two released albums. We're old - this was vinyl. Not impressed, he told me of his 10,000 record collection - he and Sasha used to own a music store. In a feeble attempt to toss him a curve I exalted the Bonzo Dog Band, to which he named the musicians and what year they recorded their work. I was informed later that he had a selective photographic memore - music albums - the musicians, dates and studios recorded. After many drinks he asked what I was doing wasting my life schlepping furniture and asked me to come work with him on the Key to Sedona Coupon Books. I agreed.

In the midst of selling advertising ot the second run of the KeY to Sedona, Morrie started the Sedona Excentric. He gave away and traded for a couple of ads and put out two eight-page papers. he started this paper after drinking with the publisher of another publication who bet him he couldn't do it and would print it if he did. Well, he also charged a hefty fee for the printing. With the third issue in the computer, Morrie came to me and announced he was a bout to write a bad check for the coming issue and needed me to go out and sell some ads to pay for it. I put the Key on hold and headed Uptown, where I fould 4 business owners amused enough with the first two editions, to back the next four. Returning with $420, Morrie jumped with
glee, grabbed my arm, told me that the paper only cost $400 to print and we had made a $20 profit and needed to celebrate - on to Judi's. We never looked back. Later, I'll tell you the shrewd tactics we employed while creating a publishing empire.

It's been a little over 2 years since our 14-year-old Spaniel, Tess, left us. Tess was special. I know everyone thinks they're pet is special, but Tess laid down to die at age 10 due to Auto Immune Deficiency - a common ailment among overbread puppy-mill Spaniels. Tess was a Humane Society pup. The Sedona Humane Society is stellar, and has been for a long time. Tess was taken to a vet who suggested sending her to phoenix for a transfusion, if they found a match, and an overnight stay, with no guarantees. My wife and I had decided Tess would die in our arms and not in a strange hospital miles away. The vet's assistant volunteered to go home and bring in her Boxer and let the vet hook them up to a love transfusion. We agreed and the deed was set into motion. It took a few hours and we took her home. We were told that if she lived through the night she might live a litttle longer. The assistant also said that if she made it, she might be a little dumber, because her Boxer wasn't that bright. We sat up all night watching her breathe. The next day the meds had worn off and Tess seemed as though she would pull through. An interesting coincidence was that the Boxer was named Tesla. Tess lived on for another 4 wonderful years. That, and everything else about her, made her special.

Dewey was a bonding dya, as the pups' mom had gotten scratched and her mammaries became infected. The caregiver, a Beagle champion breeder for nearly 40 years was under vet's suggestion to megaphone her head and keep her away from the pups until she recovered. A bunch of people came and loved on the puppies and got some lickings and pup nips with those sharp, little teeth. Everyone's socks survived the tugs of war, the puppies always winning. Our cat, Moshe, prevents us from puppy adoption. After Tess died, she took over the house and our lives. She's named after my former business partner, friend and mentor, Morrie, Morris, Moshe in Hebrew. Like Morrie, our cat is not a devout Jew, not even close. I remember making Morrie a pulled-pork barbecue sandwich. After devouring the tender, saucy, coleslaw topped pork he commented, "We are a stupid people. This is one of the best things I have ever eaten." He also loved Christmas, along with just about every other gentile holiday. He lived each day in celebration. There is much to say about our short relationship, but one of my favorite quotes of his was, "I can't understand why people would say 'Today is the first day of the rest of your life.' I would prefer to live as if I knew today was the last day of my life, making sure to tell everyone how much I love them and how sorry I am for any harm caused."

Morrie is the reason there is a Sedona Excentric publication. I plan to devote some blog space to talk about how we met and how he influenced my life. His effect continues, as tomorrow I begin working on February's Excentric. Meeting with Butterfly Lady tommorow to find out who she is and how she can fit into the arts and crafts shows we promote. Come to think of it, tomorrow is going to be a busy day, as it will include measuring to replace storm damaged windows and emailing the folks from Bone Marrow Registry USA to discuss working with their organization at our art shows.

Salad time.
Mild temperatures have kept me from trimming the roses, but today my wife and I venture out back and cut those babies back. Having state forest behind my houselends to some incredible views and offers the animal kingdom space to play and fight. Today, 3 ferrel cats were going at it, 1 male with gals fighting over his manhood. After 23 blissful years of marriage, I think my wife is of the "if you want him, you can have him" frame of mind. So far, I only seem to be attracting elderly women at the grocery stores wanting my pony tail. Ah, if they only knew how well I cooked.

Had some friends from idaho stop by yesterday. Was amazed what I could do with garbanzo beans - one recipe with garlic, tahini and roasted red peppers and some flavoring, and the other an experiment with parsley, basil, garlic and cream cheese and some spices. Everyone raved. I had somembites, but am not a hummus fan, although I thought my recipes were more than palatible, which I can't say for store bought stuff. I told my friends I knew little of idaho, excepting a quote from someone, and I'm paraphrasing, I was 35 before I realized we could leave Idaho. At least I think it was Idaho. Anyway, the evening went much better than anticipated and the conversation was kept light.

My wife knows to sit within kicking distance of my legs whenever we get together with anyone for any reason, just in case the topics go political or religious or social or anything I else I have strong opinions about. It's not like I don't appreciate the opinions of others, I just think many people are not informed enough to offer any opinion on just about any topic, and should therefore keep the conversation about theselves and their lives, something about which they at least have some first hand knowledge. I would have a difficult time disagreeing with somone who talked about how they felt about their work day. Unless they had an interesting job, I might get bored after a while, but at least I know they could back up whatever they felt.

I've noticed the older I get, the more tolerant I have become. That may seem like a contradiction to the sentence preceeding it, but I feel there is a difference in listening to people spout off about the material world and their involvement with it and subjects leaning toward the ethereal nature of humankind. I have always considered myself a spiritual being, but now I see my influence in others' lives as being significant. Actually, I think I am learning to understand better each other's influence in each other's lives. My former business partner used to say, "If we are all one, which one are we?" I love that. But as I age, I realize that not only are we all one with each other, but are all one with everything that exists, known and unknown.

Well, this has gotten way more philosophical than I intended. So, I think it's time for some earthly grounding and cutting back the rose bushes.

That's all for now . . .

Excentric

Same day service - unbleievable. Had to drop my wife at work and pick her up, near the new Talquepaque bridge. What a cluster u-no-what! It would take street hawkers used to working the streets of Storyville in New Orleans in its heyday to convince traffic to stray from the meandering maze that once was SR179. Of course, I think they should pave Schnebly Hill Road and make it one-way from Flagstaff and make the switchbacks one-way to Flagstaff with a connecting bridge to both somewhere along the way for the confused and locals, who are also often confused. You would think ADOT would have built in dollars for businesses they plan to prevent from having any opportunity of selling anything. You'd think the landlord would cut their tennants some slack. You'd think the city would defer taxes for a period. But nobody gives a rat's patoot about their fellow business person. Maybe they're all waiting for the going-out-of-business-sale. Everything must go - including the employess that must look for another minimum wage job with no benefits.

Disappointed I wasn't invited to the People's Choice Awards. There was an obvious shortage of hecklers. Everyone (must be under 28 to enter) was soooooo nice. The winners all gave the same thank you speech - I'd like to thank the people. Not one salute to any other animals or plant life or inanimate object, giving each of the winners the appearance of an inanimate object.

Old friends, seldom seen, coming by tomorrow for drinks and hummus with tahini. Separation does something to people. It gives you an opportunity to grow in whatever direction you were heading without the influence and interference of someone you once felt close to - whose opinion you valued. Now you meet again for the first time to discover you are at political odds - they blame the illegal immigration of southerners for the downfall of America's economy and I blame the greedy bastard fat cats that sucked every cent out of an unregulated money hungry system void of morals and a conscience all together. Who knows? Maybe they're right. I suppose 12 percent of the population could drain 90 percent of its wealth. But it would have to be done in Spanish, so no one would ever figure it out until it was too late.

Oh well, maybe some roasted red bell peppers and galic in the hummus will smoothe everything out and it will be a grand evening. Fun will be had by all. If the conversation gets too sticky, my wife will find a way to kick me - a subtle, but effective signal to tell me to shut the hell up. At which point, I could challenge the loudest debater to a game of bowling on our Wii system and tell him exactly where to place his balls.

Checked blood sugar - 178 - I can live with that. Decided to do some Wii bowling. Best was 211 out of 8 games - 4 right-handed, 4 left. Followed with some fitness games, totaled about 45 minutes and rechecked blood - 97. Wonder if that means I'm supposed to exercise, then eat a candy bar. Did work up a sweat and need pain killers for my back. Good thing the ball is so light - ha. The Dec 8 storm from the south caused some damage to my house. John DiBatista is going to make it better.

One of the rewards of living in a small town for a period of time is getting to know and befriend people who are there when you need them. John brought Tim of Behmer Roofing to assess roof replacement. Turns out Tim knew Morrie, my former friend, mentor and business partner. We talked about the good old days of Sedona - the Wrenwood, softball and a time when everyone got along, even if they disagreed. Hard to believe Morrie left April 1994 - nearly 16 years ago. Damn! I still miss him. We made each other laugh. there aren't too many people to banter ideas with. Thank goodness there's still Bishop and Bob at Raven's Nest and Reverend Joel. I can get my wife to luagh at my stuff, but only if i fall while I'm reading - she really loves slapstick. So, if you see me around and I'm heavily bruised, I've bust been reading some Excentric stuff to my wife.

Taking car in to Canyon Auto tomorrow for a physical. Denny and his crew are truly the best. Again, small town relationships. Have to keep it in good running order now that it's paid off. Read where 2009 was the worst year for car sales in 30 years. Wonder if anybody surveyed who bought a car thoroughly enjoyed their experience. I mean, come on, who looks forward to buying a car? I wonder if they looked at service stations to see if they had a banner 2009. If people were getting shoes resoled and electronics rewired, I assume they had their cars serviced. I admit I don't understand economics. It's not like they printed any less money - it just seems different people have it and aren't as willing to part with it. If stocks sell, doesn't somebody hae to buy them? I think the money holders don't like the political swing in the U.S. and are actively attempting to derail the current administration. Maybe they want everything to suck for 4 years and then they come to the rescue and make it all better. Maybe we can find better ways for colleges to spend money than on the millions they throw at sports. Ever wonder if the university that pays their football coack 4 million bucks a years could find a super vaccine for H1N1? If only we could get tens of thousands of people to flock to an arena every week to cheer on scientists. Go nerds, go!

Got pulled over outside Phoenix by highway patrol. Luckily, was given warning to sign instead of ticket. Trip south on I17 was actually enkoyable, barring the 20-minute delay for the speeding lecture. picked papers up in Phoenix and headed to Scottsdale via 101E and proceeded to deliver to resorts up and down Scottsdale Road and up Camelback to Phoenician. Go as far as 3rd St. in Scottsdale before turning around and delivering the other side of Scottsdale Rd. Intersting responses by resort employees to the news that Michael Moore was coming to Sedona for the 16th Annual Sedona International Film Festival in February. The younger people were excited, while the older ones demonstrably disapproved, one of them even suggesting he be pushed over a cliff. Their political affiliation was rather obvious.

The drive to Prescott Valley from Phoenix was one of the worst in the eight years I have been delivering to the south. With two collegiate bowl games, the Insight Bowl with Minnesotans and Iowans battling New Year's Eve and the Fiesta Bowl Jan 4 with Idahoans meeting Texans, I imagine alumni with money or available credit were on our roads, heads out the windows, cameras in hand. After all, Arizona is a beautiful state, even on I17 from Phoenix to Sedona. It took a while to pass them all - they refused to get over, forcing a lot of lane changing for people who know how to drive. I wondered if their 2010 resolution was to drive as if only they existed. these are the people that incite road rage - driving 55 in a 75 zone, in the left lane. Delivered in Prescott Valley and headed to Costco and Petsmart for supplies. Then it was on to Camp Verde, Cottonwood and Jerome. Jerome was slammed - harldy a parking space in town. Finished back in Cottonwood ending at Fry's - more shopping then home. It all makes for a long day - about 10 hours. My wife had made Mexican lasagna for dinner. Uneventful evening, planning next day's delivery in Sedona, Village of Oak Creek and Garland's Indian Gardens in the Canyon.

Left for Sedona about 9:30am to deliver. First time in 20 years delivering on a Sunday, but holiday dates screwed up timing. A few places were closed, meaning delivery again tomorrow, but a short day. Will post paper online tomorrow upon return home - then a couple of days down time before planning February issue.
Getting ready for my wife's sweet potato peanut soup and 60 Minutes.

Besides terrific dinner made at home, New Year's Eve was quiet. Watched Sunshine Cleaning last night. Had cinnamon buns and coffee for breakfast, also smashed some heated deviled eggs on a piece of toast. Watched some football games - usually root for underdog - no favorites - no alumni - no loyalty. I do think the wages coaches get for collegiate athletics is out of bounds.

Heading to Scottsdale in the early a.m. to pick up and deliver January's Excentric. Will be a long day. Weather promises to be decent. Made an error on art show ad dates. Art for Sedona Sake arts and crafts show should be March 27/28 - the last weekend of the month, not the first weekend the 6th and 7th.

Spent good part of afternoon looking at replacement windows online. My wife and I finally found a couple we could agree on. While 2009 was one hell of a tough year, I expect 2010 to go slowly foward. A twenty percent gain would be quite welcome. Getting tired of learning to live with less and just say no to items I admittedly can live without.

Fried calamari odor waning, but revisited tonight with leftovers in the toaster oven. Of yeah, wrote to Governor Jan Brewer. I am not pleased to hear about the closing of Arizona's state parks. Perhaps we could follow California's lead and have the government take a week off without pay every other month. Those funds could go to the parks not turning a profit and improve the gift shops by stocking the shelves with things people would actually buy - photos of themselves with an Arizona Bigfoot, snake bite antivenom, coin slots for men's urinals with a picture of a scorpion on the bowl and of course rubber tarantulas.

Need to sleep.
To my pleaseant surprise, they were quick, competent and curteous. State Farm was well represented today. When we were through, they left in peace. I still have to get a couple of bids, leading to one more check, but am quite satisfied with their assessment and offer of financial assistance. A lot of energy was exchanged, but no verbal shots were fired - well, some parlays were made by both sides, but an understanding was reached and not a scar was left, not even a bruise.

Looking forward to roof repairs and window replacements, just hoping for no wet wood leading to potential mold issues. Sat down to fried panko calamari, broiled scallops with white wine mushroom sauce, garlic fresh spinach and garlic mashed potatoes. My wife washed the spinach, for which I was greatful. I love to cook but lack an appreciation for prepping. Thinking about potato and cheddar soup for the weekend.

FTP'd paper to Phoenix Wednesday evening - system ran slow due to snow and clouds. Haven't heard back from the printer, so assume all is well. Start delivery in Scottsdale resorts Saturday morning, come back and hit Prescott Valley, shop Costco and PetsMart, on to Camp Verde to Cottonwood then Jerome and back to Cottonwood. All in all, about a 10-hour day. I do all my own delivery because I trust myself, and I know if I sluff off, I'll dock myself in pay or place me on suspension. I hate suspension.

With tomorrow being the 1st of January, 2010, I will choose to accept a message of hope and pray things improve in every aspect of everyone's life for their highest good. Right after I have a couple of cinnamon buns and coffee with Bailey's. I believe one cannot accept a message of hope and pray for highest good stuff without a couple of cinnamon buns and coffee with Baileys under their belt.

Trying to stay up to midnight and cheer in the New Year with my beloved wife. She just mixed a white russian and I am preparing to pour myself a duck fart to toast with.

Cheers and Peace for 2010!

Spent good part of the day putting January issue to bed and sending it to Phoenix for printing via FTP. Took longer than normal to ship as line of sight was fighting to find Mingus Mt. through clouds and snow. After years of listening to theories on what the government is up to around Boynton Canyon, Blodwyn Smythe decided to write a cover page divulging the secret ops operational secrets.

Took a break to attend a service of a friend's mom-in-law in Cottonwood. Lots of people, not much room and felt a little out of place. Went to represent the church I attend, as 1 minister was LA bound and the other on the other side of Mingus. Standing with my back to the rear wall, I began to imagine everyone talking about me. Besides my friend, I didn't know a soul there. I could imagine them calling me "Who's that guy." Finally, an older woman from our church came and found me huddled amongst myself in the corner. We exchanged niceties and then imagined everyone who had seen Harold and Maude, thinking we were the modern version, except I'm not 18 and she's not 79. We heard that somone close to the deceased was outside due to the cramped quarters and lack of breathable air. Mauded and I used the opportunity to join him. Got outside, but he was nowhere in sight. Disappointed, we decided to leave. They had just previously announced that we were anbout 45 minutes from the minister making any gestures and then the crowd was moving to the cemetery to have the actual service. I began to panic that I would not be able to get online and would miss deadline for the first time in more than 20 years.

Got home and moved external hard drive to wired computer and started loading the pages. The connection was slower than normal and it took nearly 4 hours to get all of the pages down there. Some of those files are pretty large. Can't do anything with the files in the hopper, so tried some Wii golf, this time lefthanded. Good news, I must be ambidextrous, because I scored as poorly as I did righthanded. Did learn that you can turn the golfer and aim the shot in other directions.

Sat down to Maryland crab cakes, garlic, cheesy, mashed potatoes and broccoli. Not bad. Took out calamari and scallops for special New Years Eve dinner. Scallops in wine sauce, garlic spinach atop potato pancakes with spicy sour cream sauce.

Getting wind driven rain damage assessed by insurance adjuster tomorrow at noon. That should be fun. Pointing to structural flaws and setting prices always turns me on - and on New Years Eve while some of those silly College Bowl games are being aired in HD. Good day to give up gambling, at least the over under.
Hopefully this adjuster will be of the human race and realize we could use some assistance to prevent further leaks and potential mold growth. Happy to be working with John DiBatista as the contractor - he's a decent man with a lovely family that supports their community and thinks green. He was the first guy I met many, many moons ago that was building with alternative materials - and his house was and still is great.

Reaching the rambling stage, so time to go...
