Black Star [You Already Knew]

When an artist releases a single solitary album over 10 years ago, question is do people care about that artist when they do something new? 1998 saw Black Star's self titled album drop and for me, changed Hip Hop forever. The album is an all time favorite, one that never seems to get played out and has remained a staple in my listening rotation over those last 10 years. Maybe the downfall of Rawkus Records played a role in another Black Star album never seeing light of day (their website once read "new Black Star" with the track Got Beef), and maybe that was a good thing. Both artists have seemed to gone in different paths but have come back together as if time had stayed still. I feel the timing couldn't have been any better for a new record. Released independently of any label, Black Star Aretha could be another album that injects life into a Hip Hop culture that seems to have been on a steady downwards spiral of materialistic and commercial self destruction.

Over the last few weeks, Okayplayer have premiered a four piece video series in preparation for the The Roots new album, The Undun. As has been reported, the new record is a narrative which can best be described below:

"undun is an existential re-telling of the short life of one Redford Stephens (1974-1999). Through the use of emotives and Redford’s internal dialogues the album seeks to illustrate the intersection of free will and prescribed destiny as it plays out ‘on the corner’. Utilizing a reverse narrative arc, the album begins as the listener finds Redford disoriented–postmortem–and attempting to make sense of his former life. As he moves through its pivotal moments he begins to deconstruct all that has led to his (and our own) coming undun"

Holy Spirits [To The Shore, Live Clip]

This live clip of Holy Spirits was shot by the Portland film crew Into The Woods in a special series they called Homesick (essentially them filming while on the road). Their New York stop couldn't have come at a better time. Occupy Wall Street was in its second month of protest against corporate greed and corruption and in full force while this clip was taken. For those not in the Manhattan area the video gives a first person view of this epic campaign to push reform and change (with Holy Spirits trying to perform over the ruckus). This is OUR generation's time to leave a mark on history and help change and make right a disgustingly corrupt system.

Record Review: Kurt Vile [So Outta Reach EP, Matador Records]

Allowing a release from Kurt Vile to marinate and simmer may be the key to enjoying the songwriter’s music; the Philly musician who tugged at our heartstrings with his 2011 release Smoke Ring For My Halo is back with his So Outta Reach EP.

Vile’s sound continues to feel warn in, not in the tattered hand-me-down sense, but in that one shirt you picked up at a thrift shop, the one you thank your lucky stars you found and somehow fits perfectly. Of course that warn feeling might be due to the actual revisiting Vile does on these six tracks. “Life’s A Beach” and “(so outta reach)” being musical companions spread out on this very same EP tie things together, along with the wonderful cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Downbound Train.” “Laughing Stock” may be my favorite of these six tracks, with an intro that rambles on and sets the perfect backdrop for those muffled vocals Vile is so keen on. “The Creature” and “It’s Alright,” both sound great as if in a half-asleep haze, and maybe they were sung in such a state as the EP cover gives way.

An ongoing theme, Vile lets us peer into the most personal facets of his life and we can’t help but love him for it. At this point in Vile’s career we have to wonder how he manged to keep an acoustic sound fresh and satisfying, a sound that is by its nature tried and can easily come off as stale. Vile’s almost-bored vocals continue to be engaging on all accounts, fingerpicking as nimble as ever. Not much else can be said about Kurt Vile that hasn't already been said; everything, every adjective, has been expressed tenfold. And somehow here we are discussing Vile once again; the complexity in songs that sound relatively simple is hard to put into words effectively.

For the most part, the style he’s embedded in his songwriter niche has remained unchanged since God Is Saying This To You. Despite spanning years and releases, songs like “My Best Friends,” “Trumpets In The Summer,” and “Freeway In Mind” could all very well be on the same collection of songs. So Outta Reach is no different. Like I said, his brand of rock has the potential to get old fast, but after years and releases, Vile manages to please fans and gain new ones with So Outta Reach; something which both baffles and excites me.

Record Review: Thee Oh Sees [Carrion Crawler/The Dream, In The Red]

San Francisco’s favorite band is at it again; not with a single or a split effort, but with a full on full-length. This knocks their album quota up to two for 2011. With so many releases you have to wonder whether Thee Oh Sees might have lost a bet. Do they have a stockpile of tracks tucked away? Maybe they enjoy making music so much that they are, maybe literally, bursting with chords and lyrics. Whatever the reason may be, trust Thee Oh Sees to deliver worthwhile jams.

Riddled with long-winded psych cuts, Carrion Crawler/The Dream already stands out from the bands last album. Castlemania, released only earlier this year, was brimming with the catchy eccentric sounds Thee Oh Sees are so well known for; utterly short bursts of energy to appease any Oh Sees addict. The unruly sounds heard on Castlemania take a back seat here as songs like “Opposition” and “The Dream” play out like a sludgy stream of delicious psych slime to sink into while Dwyer’s particularly shrill vocals float lazily about.

The rest of the album stays true to the fuzzy sludge principle. Title track “Carrion Crawler” opens up with the sounds not unlike what I imagine a defunct jazz club to sound like before picking up the pace in true Oh Sees style. Fantastic basslines and drumming dominate the album, most noticeable on cuts like “Crushed Glass” and “Chem Farmer.”

What else is there to say about Thee Oh Sees; the band have had a set formula to release excellent music for so long. Albums, singles, compilations that carry that Oh Sees rock quirkiness enabling the listener to distinguish one of their songs so easily without releasing material of questionable quality. Carrion Crawler/The Dream is no exception, it’s far from sub-par and serves up a delicious sampling which breathes more like a live show than any of the bands previous releases, the way they should be heard. Another release where Thee Oh Sees show off that which they have done well for so long.

Leaf Cast 001: October 2011

I almost killed the site. When I decided to take a week break from posting I didn't expect for such a long dark void to follow. I had become bored with posting mp3s on the site, I wanted to do something new but couldn't figure out what that would be. After a couple harsh words from blog contributor Jen Graciano, I soon realized how stupid it would have been to shut the site down. A few weeks later we had figured what direction we wanted to take the site and began the planning stages soon after.

As promised, See The Leaves has returned but a few things have changed. The site will still continue to host mp3s, videos, record reviews etc., but the main focus of the site will be based on a podcast. The podcast will be released on a monthly basis and will serve as a recap of the music that came out for each respective month. Downloadable mp3s, links to buy the records, videos and any other information or material in which we can not squeeze into the broadcast will be featured here.

Like I've said before on several occasions, See The Leaves is an ever evolving site (partially due to my habit of getting bored quickly) and hopefully this is one change in which you all enjoy.

Record Review: Mikal Cronin [S/T, Trouble In Mind]

Mikal Cronin shifts gears on his debut self-titled as he reins in the rowdy half-hazard punk of the Moonhearts to a cleaner and exciting sound. Album opener "Is It Alright" is all over the place and opens up with some of the sweetest cooing I've heard in garage rock. When I say it's all over the place, I mean this track alone could fit into a multitude of genres, a theme that plays out through the album. Thee Oh Sees' John Dwyer lays some sweet flute on this one. But like any instrument Dwyer touches, puts his own zeal and churns out a flute on speed. Like a renaissance faire without the dull whimsy.

There's a decent dose of energy that can only be expected from a Moonhearts member. Both "Apathy" and "Gone" are swear-worthy awesome; searing guitars and killer percussion that would make for a great live set. "Green & Blue" sounds like the discarded bits of the album put together--I quite like it. Granted, a lot of this album sounds like a jam session. Charlie Moonheart heads up the drums on "Get Along," and I simply cannot listen to this one enough. If this cut doesn't get you on your feet, nothing will.

"Situation" and "Again and Again" are slower jangly cuts, and despite their lack of roughhousing rock, are light singsong bangers. "Hold On Me" has me wondering where the sock hop is taking place and if this is Cronin's formal invitation. There's something endearing about Mikal Cronin's voice; something in those vocals singed with a lazy Californian 'tude draws you in. The man can sing, I'll give him that.

This isn’t your run-of-the-mill fuzzy garage-rock album, it’s too personal for that. Ten tracks that play off the same themes while sounding totally different. Smoother transitions would have done this album some good as certain track shifts were disarming; regardless, you’re still left wanting more from Cronin as the record ends. A proper solo effort from Cronin that doesn't seek to stretch its abilities.

Record Review: The War on Drugs [Slave Ambient, Secretly Canadian]

The long awaited follow-up to 2008's Wagonwheel Blues takes form as The War on Drugs sophomore release, Slave Ambient. A puzzling album that blends all the idealistic themes of Americana with present-day sounds that jangle and roar like an engine sputtering after years of neglect. But Slave Ambient is anything but busted; twelve songs that balance tension and a veil of expansive sounds that drape over every song. The textured music The War on Drugs showed off on Wagonwheel Blues has been reworked and frontman Adam Granduciel contributes some of the best, unfussy, songwriting we’ve heard from him yet.

Album opener “Best Night” is curiously endearing with Granduciel’s gruff singing. “Come to the City” and “Your Love Is Calling My Name” are completely delightful cuts and easily the most enjoyable. The latter of which stands for an effortless six minutes; a much needed groovy burst in a sea of mid-tempo rock. The album itself is riddled with chords that last for days, hints of all-too-familiar psychedelia and likeness to usual references The War On Drugs have carried since their 2008 release: Springsteen, and Petty, among others.

Tracks from the bands Future Weather EP [Secretly Canadian, 2010] make appearances with slight changes; "Baby Missiles’” knee-jerk beat, “Brothers’” running drawl. And “It’s Your Destiny’s” dainty guitar and reverb-heavy languid vocals can only make you smile. While instrumental cuts, "The Animator" "Come For It," "City Reprise," and “Original Slave” aid the album to play out cohesively; enticing snippets of sound that make the second-half of a long ride enjoyable and keep Slave Ambient from straying into a tedium. Granduciel’s poignant vocals tug lightly at the heartstrings on album closer, “Blackwater.”

Each track breathes new life into an established sound. Vagabond folk reworked to a point where Americana, folk, or rock and roll don’t quite cover all that’s happening on Slave Ambient. It’s music that can soundtrack an open road, or transport you to desolate new lands all the while sounding familiar and inviting. The War on Drugs showed off ample leg room on Slave Ambient, from the casual connecting hum tones on every track, certainly the “ambient” part of their latest, to their standard rock.

At first listen the album left me feeling nonplussed; I didn’t hate it, didn’t love it. Slave Ambient doesn’t immediately grab you by the shoulders, but while there aren’t many cuts to make you get and up and sing alongside Granduciel as on Wagonwheel Blues (e.g., “Taking The Farm,” “Needle In Your Eye”), it isn’t a lifeless listen. It’s a definite grower; after only a few listens it became easy to appreciate its intricacies, and new facets that can only be applauded. The War on Drugs combined old and new along with their own mash of rhythm to create an entirely singular album that nods to the past without dating itself.

I was told about a week ago that The Soft Moon played some new songs at a show here in San Francisco. Usually when that happens a lot of speculation soon follows about where these songs will be found. This morning Pitchfork reported that Luis will be releasing a new EP titled Total Decay which has a Halloween release date. One of the tracks can be heard below.
