Notre Dame Academy Infomation

2013-05-11T16:47:00.003-04:00

I received a tweet from one of my followers: Family Story Art, who was looking for information on Notre Dame Academy, Toledo OH 1939-1945. Unfortunately our library only has yearbooks going back to 1955. I did find a small booklet titled: A Diamond Diadem for Notre Dame 1904-1979 and one photo from the Toledo Lucas County Public Library, Images In Time Photo Archive.

Photo Circa 1899.

Calvin UCC Toledo OH Historic Photos

2012-10-02T15:39:00.002-04:00

These are the first of the photos I took in the basement of Calvary United Church of Christ Church. There wasn't much information on the photos and nobody knew very much except to say it was probaly from a ladies committee. The photos appeared to have been taken around the 1920's or 1930's. By the way, since the women were Hungarian, the surname is before the first name. If anyone knows anything more leave a comment. Meanwhile enjoy!

International Festival, Toledo OH

2012-09-14T15:49:00.001-04:00

With all thats been going on lately, I thought it would be good for those who are interested and are in the area to announce the 12th Annual International Festival at the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo, this Saturday and Sunday 9/15 and 9/16. Here is the flyer. In my opinion this is a very good festival with tours of the mosque and tour guides willing to discuss international events. Oh yes, the food is great too! Enjoy!

Ramadan Mubarak! In the interest of genealogy, I thought I would share photos of Toledo OH's oldest mosque in continuous use. The top photo comes from the digital photo archives of the www.toledolibrary.com. Circa 1950, this was the Syrian Mosque at 722 E. Bancroft Ave. built in the Middle Eastern Modern Style. The community was first organized in 1938. The building was used until a bigger one was built in Perrysburg starting in 1983. The building was used by other businesses and then sat empty until 2010. The building was turned back into a mosque by the Toledo Masjid of Al-Islam (www.toledomasjid.com). Enjoy the beautiful artwork on the windows.

Rossford OH High School Yearbooks

2012-06-28T19:21:00.000-04:00

Good News!

The Rossford Public Library in Rossford OH has scanned all their high school yearbooks and sent digital copies to www.ohiomemory.org. You can access the photos at www.rossfordlibrary.org. Go to site and click on Historical Collection. Also the library has a beautiful mural on the walls made up of historical city photos. If you go to the site and click on Historical Mural, you can see the photos and get a description of each one. For those of you not familiar with the Toledo OH area, Rossford is a separate town that is next door to Toledo. The town is part of Wood County not Lucas County and if you are interested in vital records you can go to the county seat in the city of Bowling Green.

Also seekingtoledo now has a link to the State Library of Ohio sources for genealogists at www.library.ohio.gov.

Happy Source Hunting!

St. Hedwig Church Mass Elinination

For those of you who don't live in the Toledo area, this may be news to you. Unfortunately, Toledo's first Polish Roman Catholic Church, St. Hedwig will discontinue its only Mass starting 09/01/2012. St. Hedwig's will have oratory (chapel) status. That means the church will be available for weddings and funerals. St. Hedwig was founded in 1875 at the corner of Lagrange and Dexter by the first wave of Polish immigrants in the 1870's. The current building was erected in 1895.

It has taken over a month to separate Section 2 stones from Section 3. Worse of all some stones that should be on Section 2 are in Section 8. The markers are clearly written but the headstones were marked in different directions. Some headstones are hard to read even with water sprayed on them. Some headstones are knocked over and can't be read. Some have disappeared. This is the best that can be done. Sorry.

Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Toledo OH History

2012-04-29T14:25:00.001-04:00

Mt. Carmel is Toledo's oldest Catholic cemetery. It was formed frrom the combination of St. Francis de Sales and St.Mary's in 1939. The cemetery has the bodies of the first nun and priest to die in Toledo. It also has the body of Peter Navarre, Indian scout whose monument is the most prominent on the grounds. Some of the bodies were removed to Calvary Cemetery on Dorr St. The cemetery on the corner of Manhattan Blvd. and Lagrange St. has 15 sections sitting on 12 acres of land. Some of the markers can be no longer read due to time, elements and vandalism. Records from the office show who bought the cemetery plots but not everyone who is buried in the plots. The names and photos are what could be read on that particular day. Hopefully in the future GPS coordinates can be given to make it easier to find the graves. For now the pictures started with Section One at the furthest monument Riopell & Steger going from south to north in an S formation. This may make it easier to find the markers. Markers that just say mother, father etc. were not included because it was not definite who they belonged to and created too much confusion.

Haughton Cemetery History

2012-03-25T14:57:00.001-04:00

Haughton Cemetery started first as a private burial ground by the six Haughton brothers, Lyman, Stephan, Marvin, Cyrus, John and William. They first settled the area 1833-1834. At present there are about 200 graves, many without markers. The records only begin with 1941 but only 40 plots had been sold since. The cemetery was maintained by Washington Local Township until the city of Toledo annexed that section of Central Avenue. Then the cemetery was turned over to the city for maintenance. Cemetery lots cannot be sold because an abscence of early records make it all but impossible to learn which ones are available. Burials are permitted only upon presentation of an existing deed, or an affidavit by a legal heir as to the exact location of the lot owned. The last previous burial was in 1962.
