What Jeff Goldblum´s Jurassic Park taught me

I was finishing up my teenage years and into young adulthoood when Steven Spielberg´s Jurassic Park came up in the early 90´s. Being a cinema enthusiast, days went by until it was finally screened at our local theater. I went to the movies without haste and watched this amazing flick, and was truly mesmerized by the special effects displayed, the coherent plot and subsequent story as it evolved, the true to life characters that had been assembled to give life to this adventure, and the struggle for survival which indeed, is the major plot of the story.

What has all of this have to to with H&S you might be wandering? Well, for instance, it was the very first time I even heard of CHAOS Theory, a mathematical explanation of why the world works the way it does, (nature that is), and of how one of the movie´s characters explains this without desdainn or care, but with the utmost respect for the ultimate consequences that such theory tries to imply within the grasp of one´s senses. That character is of course Dr. Ian Malcolm, which in turn is played by none other than Mr. Jeff Goldblum.

I have seen Mr. Goldblum´s work prior to this story. In the early 80´s, he starred in the much unforgettable horror movie "THE FLY", from which I believe, has been his best work to date. I always pictured him pretty much the same way in every single flick after such horror was deeply rooted inside all of our younger selves such a while back. and whenever we went to the local theater and he starred in any movie whatsoever, we always reffered to him as "LA MOSCA", the "fly" in Spanish.

However, when Jurassic Park came out in the early 90´s, his performance was top of the notch. All of the other characters where fine, but his came with a warning. one that I have never forgotten to date. Before all CHAOS broke loose ("literally"), all of the movie´s characters where having a fancy dinner after having witnessed the park´s potential, and interacted with the scores of technicians and scientists involved in the project. Regarding the interaction with an extinct species and suddenly bringing both of them together in a hipothetical future (past), when the time came for everyones dialogue, Jeff Goldblum, (Dr. Ian Malcolm), a trained mathematician and CHAOS theory specialist, uttered this comments regarding the amazing scientific breakthroughs the Park´s team had unlocked:

"You didn´t earn the knowledge for yourselves, so, you don´t take any responsability"

A simple one liner that at first glance, encompasses what myriads of scientists and professionals of all brands know for true. KNOWLEDGE is a hard thing to come by. Specially when such knowledge is not valued for all of it´s worth. And it is this knowledge that comes out of heartthrobbing failure, of sour and harsh experiences, of tough decisions and hard choices.

Take for instance, a small child that is beginning to understand fractions. At first, he or she will have a hard time trying to understand how, in a world where he has been introduced as full units, he now has to see them units be partitioned in smaller chunks of reality. Some kids can cope with this sudden change upon their reality, others have a very hard time with these concepts. We as adults try to show them with everyday examples how this works. Food is mostly used since this is know terrain for them kids. Pizzas are always the best examples, and kids carry on from there. However, an extra "effort" is always required for this knowledge to "stick" in ther minds for good. Numerical equations and graphs usually follow, but alas... the main concept if finally understood.

How long did the human race evolve before fractions became available as a proof of concept that a whole entitiy could be partitioned, and what are the benefits of such knowledge in the modern era is way beyond our grasp. From the time of the ancient greeks to our modern times, there is an inescapable truth regarding knowledge: In order to achieve it, you must actually EARN it.. and earning it means going through many motions, theories, deep thought, and sometimes, fieldwork (commonly known as research in order to realize your thoughts were right on, and your theory was indeed, correct. Thus, to achieve knowledge, you must first "work hard" towards it, and sometimes the journey is full of thorns and twists.

Regarding Health and Safety which is the topic of today´s discussión, KNOWLEDGE in this field requires much "trial and error". Simply put, there is not a long, long way to actually understand why we aim towards a CERO ACCIDENT environment, and why this is achievable, but only through constant determination, hard work, and of course, "hands on experience". You can´t just simply teach it in a classroom. You must "feel" it on the flesh, in order to best understand it, and not to mention, make everybody around you appreciate it.

You literllay have to "sweat bullets" in order to achieve such a "hands on", knowledge, thus, learning how to "appreciate" what you´ve learned. And thus, owning it, and finally, taking RESPONSABILITY for it. This is no secret to any and all of us who are constantly engaged in Health & Safety, to understand, to learn, and to achieve, is a process well known to us. Whomever decides to take this path as a career move must understand the undeniable truth that this discipline teaches us. and teaches us the HARD WAY. There is no knowledge without sacrifice; namely our time, our effort, our families and loved ones.. every single thing you invest in H&S is kindly rewarded once everybody comes home safely, everyday.

So, as to the movie quote goes: "earning knowledge without responsability" is a dangerous thing in itself. Thinking you have now the power to lead others into dangerous and treacherous fields of work, and hoping for the best is not gonna cut it in any way. You must first EARN IT in order to best understand what Health & Safety is all about, prior to any field deployment, and in such fashion, try to lead others to understand it, is quite frankly, a big challenge in itself. However so, those before us have taught us a crisp lesson, in the sense that, SAFETY, total safety, can only be achieved, if those who we serve, APPRECIATE our efforts, and COMMIT themseleves to the mission, which is "bring them home safely, everday!".

INDIVIDUALITY

Nobody really likes the idea of sharing. I have this this happen everywhere and everyplace. People all over try to keep their individuality, and, for example, when you want to share a public space, sometimes you´ll see that people will shun you off, or turn you down, or look the other way, as long as they don´t seat in the place that, you have, so hardly, fought for.

It must be the sense that everybody wants to be alone.

This kind of thing happens in a lot of places, where this goes on. It doesn´t matter the country that you live in, or the culture that you are from, or the religion that you belong to. It´s always the same, trying to keep your individuality, and sometimes you try to keep your privacy.

That is maybe the reason why, people all over the world try to fight for a space, to fight for a small hinder, of individuality. And this is why people fight and try hard to keep those spaces. And once they achieve such spaces, they don´t want to share them with others.

And it is this lack of sharing, is what has the human race, where it is right now, on the verge of extinction, on the brink of oblivion.

So, this refection today, is to show, that people don’t like to share, people will fight hard for what they believe in, and once they have it, and once they have achieved it, they won´t share it with nobody else. And that, in a sense, is one of the reasons why, we FAIL as a human species.

Tel Aviv, Israel

The luffing jib of an out of service tower crane blew over the back of the superstructure in strong winds in Tel Aviv, Israel this morning.

The storm caused extensive damage in the area, uprooting trees and taking overhead power lines down. Thankfully no one was hurt in the crane incident and the tower remained stable. It looks as though the jib was left at its maximum elevation with the crane unable to weather vane. Residents nearby took a video that shows the collapse as it happened.

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL

Una grúa torre tipo "Luffing Jib" que estaba fuera de servicio colapso, quebrándose su superestructura debido a los fuertes vientos en Tel Aviv, Israel, esta mañana.

La tormenta causó daños extensivos en el área, levantando árboles y rompiendo cables de tendido eléctrico. Afortunadamente, no hubo pérdidas humanas en este incidente de grúa, y la torre de la misma permaneción intacta. Parece que la estructura se dejó en su rango máximo de altura, imposibilitando a la misma a girar conforme los fuertes vientos soplaban. Residentes de la zona tomaron un video de los acontecimientos.

En enero se declaró el estado de emergencia, lo que provocó que el gobierno impusiera restricciones en el uso del agua. Esta grave situación se puede ver en los lagos y embalses: el lago Oroville, con un volumen total de más de 4.363 millones de metros cúbicos, se encuentra al 32% de su capacidad.
