I have been visiting Japan since two weeks after the M9.0 earthquake. My wife and two daughters were already in Nagoya, Japan when the mass earthquake assaulted Northern Japan, followed by the record-breaking Tsunami. Fortunately my family members were all safe and not affected by this natural disaster. I am experiencing the gift of being in the present, and keeping away from my mind going into the scenarios of what could have happened especially to my family.

As I contemplate, listen to the stories of the affected areas and people, I have been learning many lessons. The Japanese warrior spirit, honesty, honor and unity to begin the recovery from this natural tragedy and disaster are amazing to observe. It is a humble experience for me to be here during this time. I am touched in a very deep level that I will never forget. There are many important lessons that are taught to everyone in the whole world. Now is the time for all of us to change our focus from the problem to the solution, from blaming to taking responsibility, and from complaints to appreciation.

I’m seeing and being a witness of the 21 concepts I put together in Seibukan Jujutsu to create and understand our life journey and become successful in anything we choose to do: Initiative, Speed, Determination, Acceptance, Flow, Adaptability, Patience, Strength, Commitment, Flexibility, Spirit, Sensitivity, Presence, Power, Emptiness, Intuition, Observation, Wisdom, Intention, Creativity, and more than anything else, Healing.

It doesn’t matter how dark it looks, the light will always prevail if we focus on it. Right now I’m experiencing the highest level of gratitude and compassion that I have ever felt in my life. On behalf of all the Seibukan Jujutsu Dojos, members and families, I send and extend my condolences and warm wishes to the people, friends and families in the affected areas of Japan.

Much love and appreciation,
Julio Toribio – Seibukan Jujutsu Kancho

Gasshuku 2011 was held on the weekend of January 8 and 9. 60 students participated in the event with 45 black-belts including 15 Dojo-cho, and 15 Mudansha. All 21 principles and concepts of Seibukan Jujutsu were covered in the 2-day seminar. On Saturday, Toribio Kancho initiated the morning seminar with an energetic “fire” session, explaining and demonstrating “initiative, speed and determination” concepts. In the afternoon, four instructors taught very powerful class. They were Som Pourfarzaneh Shihan, William Candelario Renshi, Chris Haney Renshi, and Jose Miguel Rosas Kyoshi.

Saturday session was concluded with outstanding demonstrations by 17 Dojo-cho and Honbu Dojo instructors – These spectacular instructors were (in the order of demonstration);Adam Ortega Shihan from Honbu Dojo, Jim Duenshing Shihan from Honbu Dojo, Casey Lake Shihan from Honbu Dojo, BJ Fine Sensei from SJO Texas, Ryan Hoffman Sensei from SJO Minnesota, Aron Yasskin Sensei from SJO Mendocino, Jon Rodriguez Sensei from SJO Contra Costa, Jason Costanza Sensei from SJO Martinez, Logan Thornton Shihan from SJO Wasilla, Jason Ortega Shihan from SJO Oregon, Chorus Bishop Shihan from SJO Haines, Adam Ohsberg Shihan from SJO North Carolina, Som Pourfarzaneh Shihan from SJO San Francisco, William Candelario Renshi from SJO Los Angeles, Chris Haney Renshi from SJO Hawaii, Jose Miguel Rosas Kyoshi from SJO Santa Cruz, and Julio Toribio Kancho.

On Sunday, Toribio Kancho taught the class covering the concepts, and also guided the participants to set up their 21 goals that they would like to achieve in 2011. Students paired up and shared with each other with one goal out of 21. It was a very supportive, motivational and inspiring session.

The memorable event concluded in Misogi, the purification and cleansing of body, mind and spirit. It took place at Alisomar Beach, Pacific Grove. Our annual ritual this year was on such a clear day, with strong tides. The strong water gave each warrior the power to thrive this year, the coldness of water woke up the inner strength, and the purity of the water cleansed the spirit. The whole experience of the weekend was so powerful that made all participants commit to themselves to achieve their goals this year. Thank you for those who participated in the event and contributed to make the seminar as successful as it has become! And for both who participated and who were not able to this time, all are invited to join Taikai 2011 on June 4 and 5. Please plan ahead!

On June 5 and 6, we had such a powerful annual gathering, Taikai 2010. Thank you to all the Seibukan Warriors in and outside of the US who participated, as well as 14 Dojo-chos represented their schools at the event; Seibukan Jujutsu of Honbu Dojo (headquarters), Wasilla, Oregon, Mendocino, Solano, San Francisco, Berkeley, Martinez, Seaside, Santa Cruz, Los Angeles, Puerto Rico, Switzerland, and Hungary. It was great seeing students who I have not seen for a long time and who live away from the Headquarters, as well as the warriors from all over California.

I enjoyed teaching the morning sessions of the two days, covering the themes of Fire, Water, Earth, Wind and the Void , along with the concepts and techniques of each theme. It always inspires me to teach in this special event, and the best of me comes out to teach and share my skills, knowledge and experience.

In the afternoon sessions, we had 6 certified instructors teaching and sharing their skills and knowledge. These exceptional teachers were; Chris Haney Renshi of Honbu Dojo, Som Pourfarzaneh Shihan of SJO San Francisco, Jose Miguel Rosas – Kyoshi of SJO Santa Cruz, Jason Ortega Shihan of SJO Oregon, Bear Roberts Shihan of SJO Solano, and William Candelario Renshi of SJO Los Angeles. Each instructor presented a class in such a unique way, and all participants enjoyed and appreciated their generous teachings.

On Saturday, we had a special demonstration for the level of Nanadan (seventh degree black-belt) by Jason Ortega Shihan. He demonstrated his years of everyday training, experiences in teaching, and what an outstanding martial artist he has become. The skills and techniques are precise, and level of understanding was deep. He presented a model demonstration of Nanadan level for others to follow.

Ortega Shihan’s family came from Oregon and supported him at this occasion. His three brothers, Adam, Ian and Brendan, are all black-belts in Seibukan Jujutsu, as well as their mother Madelynn. At the end of his demonstration and presentation of promotion, we had a surprise to a special person. That was the father of the four Ortega bothers, Tom. He received an honorary black-belt and promotion to Shodan in Seibukan Jujutsu. He has been a great supporter for his four sons and his wife to study Seibukan Jujutsu, and open up a Dojo in Oregon having Jason as the head instructor. He has been seeing the techniques, listening and practicing the philosophies of Seibukan Jujutsu in his daily life. Tom was asked to throw each of his sons at the end of the surprise presentation, and he did beautiful techniques which surprised everyone in the Dojo, especially Ushiro zeme otoshi to Jason was fantastic! It was definitely one of the high-lights of the event.

On Sunday, we finished the weekend seminar with the Kudan (ninth degree black-belt) demonstration by Jose Miguel Rosas Kyoshi. One of the requirements of Kudan level is that the instructor has to teach and produce 7 or more Nidan (second degree black-belt) and above levels of his/her own students. Rosas Kyoshi has been teaching in his school in Santa Cruz, California for quite some years, extending his professional skills and knowledge to his students of the area. He has also influenced so many practitioners of the entire Seibukan Jujutsu organization, and has been a model to many students and martial artists.

For the first time in Seibukan Jujutsu’s history, Rosas Kyoshi was promoted to the level of Kudan at this Taikai 2010. His seven selected students practiced with Rosas Kyoshi to put together an outstanding demonstration, and each one of them reflected the teaching and mannerism of their teacher Rosas Kyoshi very well. The demonstration consisted of basic and advanced techniques and skills, including some humors and lots of laughter. Throughout the demonstration, Rosas Kyoshi displayed his horned skills and professionalism, and every part of the presentation was admirable and noteworthy. Special thanks to those who came to support him, and be a part of this historical moment.

Taikai 2010 concluded with great excitement, explosive energy and high expectations for the year to come! The photo gallery is available for viewing, and a video from the event will be produced shortly, so please keep checking our website.

The next big event is going to be Gasshuku 2011, that is scheduled on January 8 and 9. I invite every Seibukan Jujutsu warrior to this gathering, and extend my invitation to prospective students who are inspired by our teaching and philosophies. Seibukan Jujutsu keeps evolving and extending its non-competitive self-defense techniques, positive energy and unique philosophies for modern day warriors of all ages.

Thank you for your support and let’s keep going!

I would like to personally invite you to this eventful gathering. When Seibukan Jujutsu was born on June 1, 1993 I asked for the strength to guide students and myself for the next 21 years to raise the art with honesty, integrity and discipline.

The first 7 years of “awareness” were designed to train students, the second 7 years of “assessment” were dedicated to raise instructors, and we are now half-way the third year of the third 7 year-phase of “action” which is committed to the Dojo development and global expansion of Seibukan Jujutsu.

We will be meeting in Honbu Dojo. You will receive the two-day intensive training in a progressive and uplifting atmosphere with a supportive and positive group. Classes will be taught by myself and other certified instructors that I am very proud of. On top of that, each day will conclude with a high-rank demonstration.

I will sincerely honor and appreciate the presence of Dojo-cho, Uchideshi, and all the members of Seibukan Jujutsu at this memorable celebration.

Seibukan Jujutsu is a traditional martial art for modern day warrior – it offers ancient Japanese martial art techniques that can be effectively applied to our daily living to protect ourselves in the societies of 21st century. Our curriculum includes self-defense against armed and unarmed, single and multiple assailants. Pressure points, kicks and strikes to the body are used as distractions, or to appropriately control and subdue an attacker. Techniques of escapes, throws, chokes, grabs, joint-locks and ground defense are taught, as well as weapons such as guns, knives, ropes, swords, long and short sticks are used to learn disarming techniques.

Seibukan Jujutsu is highly unique with its philosophies of seven stages – Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Void, Consciousness and Balance – and each level comes with a curriculum and philosophical goals. With its original main idea of “Awareness, Assessment, Action®”, the art seeks solutions over problems, responsibility over blaming, and appreciation over complaints. In Seibukan Jujutsu, there is no competition. We believe in self-victory and the pace of progress in each practitioner is highly respected.

Seibukan Jujutsu is a progressive and comprehensive martial art with self-defense skills, physical training, unique philosophies and supportive family-like practitioners. It is suitable for both man and women of all ages with great emphasis on personal development and self-protection. Our excellent children and juniors programs create a family atmosphere in the Dojo and our community. I believe Seibukan Jujutsu will offer you a positive path, great support among other warriors with good spirits, and inspirational experiences to move forward in life.

I invite you to look throughout this website, visit the closest Seibukan Jujutsu Dojo in your area, and join us on the mat!
