They are lined up in order of toughness according to Hv (Vickers Hardness) ranking system.

They get tougher the further you go to the right.

"DiaShield" is about 2-3 times harder than Stainless Steel.

"Duratect/DLC" is about 5-7 times harder.

"Duratect α" is about 10 times harder. It is the same as Sapphire crystal.

It is used in models such as the AT9050-58A "Citizen Exceed".

There is this much of a difference between Seiko and Citizen.（SEIKO may currently be developing new technology.）

The DLC(Diamond-like Carbon) doesn't mean that is is just as hard as a diamond、but that it has a structure similar to a diamond.

About the Quartz watch Second hand alignment

About the Quartz watch Second hand alignment

There are times when the second hand doesn’t quite hit the marker.（second hand mis-alignment）

I have received many questions regarding this from several customers asking why this was happening. I found an easy-to-understand explanation on the Citizen watch site, so I am posting a summary of it.

The second hand’s movement is controlled by the gears. There is an intentional space placed in-between each gear. That space(playfully) is called "backlash". This backlash is the cause of the second hand mis-alignment The gear space causes the place where the second hand stops to slip a little.

An adequate backlash is essential for smooth gear operation. To put it quite simply, the gears would stop turning if the backlash was too small.

The reasons for the necessity of an adequate backlash are outlined below.

１．Thermal expansion
The gears expand due to the heat from friction. A difference of just 10C can have an affect on gear alignment, even if they are small. The backlash is essential in minimizing that affect.

2.　 Distortion
The gears of a watch take on pressure as they mov, causing these small parts to become slightly distorted. The backlash is necessary to minimize distortion.

3.　Impact
Watches are sometimes dropped. The will cause the gears to break upon direct impact if there isn’t a bit of slack.

4.　Wear resistance
By creating a backlash, it is easier for lubricant to get up into the gears、preventing abrasion.

5．Parts Standardization
The parts in a watch are not all exactly the same size, strictly due to error, despite an increase in machining accuracy.(Of course this is within the acceptable range for the maker). In order to account for this error, it is important to put the backlash into place to ensure that all parts turn smoothly..
（This might be the main reason.）

In conclusion

The Backlash is an essential part of the gear, and can’t be removed 100%.

While it is possible to reduce the backlash by improving the gear manufacturing precision and assembly method, doing so would have an impact on thermal expansion, impact, and wear resistance etc.

In other words, an adequate backlash is the solution for balancing durability, accuracy, and refined hand movement within the watch.

That is all of the available information from the Citizen watch site.

References:
Citizen watch site (Japanses)
https://citizen.jp/support/useful/lag01.html
Picture : Wikipedia
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backlash_(engineering)

The rest is what I have been able to determine speaking from personal experience.

SEIKO has come out with Backlash auto-adjust mechanism, which they use in the Grand Seiko Quartz for reducing second hand mis-alignment.

The Grand Seiko Quartz uses the power of the spring to reduce the slight second hand mis-alignment that is created by the backlash as much as possible. (It’s like stopping the motion of a moving object with the power of a spring, which is difficult to wrap my head around.)

Even though the misalignment is far less noticeable in Grand Seiko is n comparison to any other watch, even the meticulously crafted Grand Seiko suffers from a slight second hand mis-alignment. (Sorry SEIKO)

About SEIKO Backlash auto-adjust mechanism,
https://www.grand-seiko.com/au-en/special/9f9s9stories/vol3/2/

Production of the new 4S caliber

Seiko formed an in-house mechanical watch project team due to the
positive response received from the 6810 UTD series.
But no engineer with experience in mechanical caliber design was
available in a company.

So, the new caliber, 4S35 was decided to manufacture based on the old
52 caliber, which was produced 20 years ago.
The 52 caliber prided itself on precision of the 1970’s Chronometer standard.

At last, 200,000 4S calibers were produced.
Sayonara Grand Seiko SBGX205, SBGX209

Seiko has announced that they have stopped selling the SBGX205, (as well as the SBGX209).

The SBGX005 sold since 1997 underwent a minor change and was sold as the SBGX205 for 22 years.

Since it was a long seller, and was relatively affordable, it was a best seller.

Grand Seiko was only sold within Japan when it went on sale. So this watch was made for Japanese people.

The 36.5mm size was perfect for Japanese people.

The curved case differs from the typical flat and straight lines of the recent Grand Seiko. This design was also in style at the time.

Only the case design was different l, and was polished with SALLAZ polishing.

It uses all of the best technology of Grand Seiko.

In order for the band to always keep a nice feel, there is a little bit of play between each link.

The dial has a special finish. (It is difficult to explain in words). This makes the contrast of the hands really stand out, making them really easy to see.

Now, even when I wear this watch, there probably wouldn’t be very many people who would recognize it as a Grand Seiko. It might not suit a younger crowd.

However, I think it fits 50+ year old men just fine. So I would like to buy one and keep it a secret from my wife.

Sayonara, Grand Seiko that doesn’t look like a Grand Seiko.

Sayonara SEIKO SUMO Diver.

Seiko is to stop production of the SDC031 and SBDC033 wristwatches,

which carry the nickname of “Sumo Diver”.

Ever since these automatic divers watches debuted in the spring of 2007,

they have been a big hit.

Not only are they authentic automatic divers watches,

but they are also inexpensive,

which is why I think they were popular.

I wonder who gave them the SUMO nickname?

It makes sense now. It is a fitting nickname.

Maybe it’s because the case shape resembles a sumo wrestler.

I think that the case design also resembles the wrestling ring.

I have a Blue Sumo SBDC003. I mainly wear it off.

It is rather heavy, which makes it feel like I am wearing a wristwatch,

and it is like a completely different watch when it is on.

I love the curved case side.

I wear it a lot in the summer. I don’t dive myself,

but this watch looks great with casual clothes such as T-shirts.

Come to think of it, the popular SARY055 and SARY057 have also been discontinued.

I recommended this to those who wanted to dabble in a basic automatic.

I can’t wait to see what comes out next.

1. My grandfather's sword

My grandfather was a soldier in the military, and always carried a Japanese sword.

When I sought the expert opinion of a specialist, they told me it was more than 400 years old.
-I have no way of knowing if that is actually true or not.

I have never been in any big misfortunes up to now, and have led a relatively
happy life.
I feel like I have been blessed like this because the sword watches over me.

2. My father's Grand Seiko

Needless to say, this wristwatch is my treasure.
It is the cornerstone of my work.

Thanks to this watch, I have met countless people that I would never have had the chance to otherwise.
I met a lot of people from abroad, which expanded my world.
Also, whenever I face any sort of trials or tribulations... or simple tests, I always wear my wristwatch.
For example, I wore my wristwatch the other day during an English test.
I feel that wearing it helped me bring my A game.

3. A fountain pen that was given to me as a gift by a friend

When I hospitalized for a month, one of my watch enthusiast friends living abroad gathered funds from everyone, and sent it to me as as a "get well soon" gesture.
They all lived in different countries, and have never met me in person.
They are all watch enthusiast friends that talk to me on an internet forum.
Following their lead, others chipped in, and raised the funds for it.
I was rather surprised when I found out about it, and was deeply touched by their gesture of friendship.
I really love this pen, and use it all the time.
I feel like I get all sorts of great ideas when I use this pen.

Digital VS Analog

Digital instruments such as the Iphone, digital cameras, and PCs have several useful functions.
You can't live without them. You'd be in a pinch if you didn't own them.

However, that also means analog items also hold a certain significance things such as fountain pens, film cameras, mechanical watches, and red pencils.

It is not a question of convenience, but rather one of partnership.
If you use them, then they become indispensable to you.

For example, it feels really nice to write fine letters with a fountain pen.
It also leads to good ideas. Underlining things with a red pen in books is rather enjoyable.

-I have no word to express how important the 1964 Grand Seiko I received from my father as a gift is to me.

Recently, the type of analog good I have my eye on just happens to be a car that was found in a used car shop.

It is a beetle that uses an air-cooled flat4 engine. It was made in 1973, and is 1200cc.

It takes forever to speed up. It's top speed is only 120km. The windows fog up when it rains. It is hot in the summer and cold in the winter.

However, it is a pleasure to drive in.

The engine purrs sweetly. The manual mission allows for total control of the vehicle.
I mean have you seen the steel plated front panel?

Analog goods have a certain charm that digital goods are missing.

It is nothing new. But it provides a sense of security.

Japanese office workers often go out with their coworkers for a drink at the end of the workday.

It was the same when I worked as a production manager for a TV commercial and film company. I didn’t really care for it, though. I valued my free time more.

One night, at one such drinking party, my boss caught a glimpse of my watch from under my suit, and complimented me by saying “That’s a nice watch you have there.”

I suddenly saw that boss in a whole new light.

Then , he allowed me to work on the Seiko wristwatch TV commercial and film production team as a part of the staff.

The flow of time was compared to the Sumida River that flows through Tokyo. The catchphrase for those commercials was “Analog is the flow of time”.

The reason I started exporting Japanese wristwatches

The average Japanese person started using the internet towards the end of the 1990's. I figured I would use the internet to enjoy talking to people from abroad.

On the internet, there are places known as "forums", where people from all over the world with the same interests can exchange information in English.

One of those such forums was a place to talk about Japanese wristwatches, or the "Japanese Watch Forum. (It no longer exists).

There were few participants on the "Japanese Watch Forum" at the time, but they were all kind to me even with my limited English.

Since I live in Japan and was able to read Japanese information, I had more information on "Japanese wristwatches# than the other participants.

When I distributed that information in English, it made the participants from abroad very happy.

At that particular time, Japanese wristwatch makers didn't distribute much information in English, so my information had value.

Because of that, I started selling Japanese wristwatches on the American auction site, eBay.

The same model as the SEIKO watch that I sold on ebay.com first.

Not many Japanese people used the American eBay site at the time, and since I was in the minority that did, I made a lot of friends. Those people introduced their friends to me, which expanded my network.

Since PayPal wasn't around at the time, whenever I sold a wristwatch on the American eBay site, I took US$ Bank money order as payment. It took more than a month, and cost $50 USD in fees in order to exchange them

For more than 10 years, I was able to export Japanese watches like that, but the one that stands out the clearest in my memory is Seiko's 4S15 Military product.

They were already out of production when I started handling them, so they were difficult to get a hold of.

However, it was an extremely popular wristwatch overseas.

I was an engineer in an IT related field, but I went to several private shops and pawnshops all over the city on my way home from work and on Sundays, in order to get my hands on new 4S15 Military watches. It made my overseas contacts really happy when I sold them the watches.

One of them asked me, ""Why don't you open an online shop?" So I figured "Why not?", and went for it.

The first time I scratched it, it really bothered me, and I got a little depressed by the scratch.

That chronograph on that watch was accurate to 1/100 of a second.

I played with it by stopping the stopwatch at exactly 5'00"; it made a great pasta timer.

I didn't really use it for anything else aside from that, but the chronograph was exciting to me just by doing that.

It was by my side through university exams, employment exams, dates with girls, but I ended up losing it one day.

I found another one on Yahoo auction the other day. It cost less than $10 USD including shipping. The light doesn't work, but everything else works without issue.

It was a bittersweet reunion.

It also was given a 72 hour power reserve.

1. Switching over to an Automatic Winding System

The Magic Lever System has few parts, making it exceedingly durable. Winding up the 55 hour main spring was more than efficient.

*About magiclever

Winding up the 72 hour main spring made me realize that the magic lever system has its limits.

It switched over to the reversing pawl wheels system (is this name right?), which has an efficient winder. The Reverse wheel was made more compact to increase efficiency, and treating the watch with hard coating increased durability.

*About Reverser
https://watchmakingjourney.com/2015/10/09/automatics-eta-2824-2/

The winding gears were rechecked, and were made more efficient by going back to using jewel bearings. That is why the number of jewels increased from 26J to 35J

2. Rethinking the Main Spring .

The length of the main spring (Spron510) was lengthened to 10 cm compared to the 9S55, it was widened by 0.5 mm, and it switched over to the 72 hour power reserve. (The main spring was thinned out by 0.2 mm to make it more compact).

The 9S55 spring is 40 cm long and 0.12 mm thick.
The 9S65 spring is 50 cm long and 0.10 mm thick.

Increasing Durability

http://www.seiko-cleanenergy.com/watches/mechanical-1.html

1. Improving the Hairspring

The "Spron610" was used as materials for the hairspring. This doubled the shock resistance and tripled the anti-magnetization.

2. Improving the balance wheel

http://www.webchronos.net/special/2010/04/50_vol8/index.html

The balance wheel mortice was changed from 0.07 mm to 0.08 mm to increase durability.

3. Improving the gears

The gears were given a hard coat finish, and some gears were gold-plated with low abrasion resistance to aim for accuracy, making them more durable.

The watch often falls and gets hit since the driver's seat sways a lot. That is why it is made of hard-to-break acrylic. It would easily crack and shatter if it used glass.

The driver's seat is subjected to a lot of magnetism, so they can't use a radio watch. If a radio watch were to be affected by the magnetism during reception, then it would not be able to receive signals correctly.

Even quartz is weak against strong magnetism, so it is made with stronger anti-magnetic properties than regular watches.

Adjuster, Pliers, little container, Small plastic bag

Parts often go missing when doing this, so it is best to have a little container to put the parts in. Also keep a bag handy to keep leftover parts in.

Removing the clasp makes things go smoother. Make sure to double check the direction of the arrow on the bracelet, and remove the pin with the adjuster.

Don't put any more pressure on it than necessary. When you are unable to push the pin out, check to make sure that the adjuster pin is straight, and check the position from both the top and from the side.

Use pliers when you are unable to remove the pin. (Make sure not to scratch the bracelet).

Put the collar into the hole (Make sure to check the direction of the arrow on the watch bracelet back.)
