People fear the possibility of encountering epileptic patients who are at risk for complex partial seizures because of the dangers that it has on the life of a person. Because complex partial seizures are characterized by unconsciousness, it is difficult to identify the extent of the damage felt in the body of the patient. Nevertheless, there are important things that need you need to know about this these kinds of problems to be able to actively device means of seizure management and help in saving another person’s well being.

Importance of Knowing What to Do With Complex Partial Seizure

For those who are not directly affected by health problems such as epilepsy that may lead to a complex partial seizure, they would rarely take into consideration learning about this. Every day of your life, you meet and mingle with people that may have certain health problems and needs. Although you can say that it may be a one in a million chance for you to encounter a person having a complex partial seizure, you can never tell when you might get caught in a life threatening situation. Knowledge is a very helpful tool in being ready for any situation that may come your way.

Identifying the Type of Seizure

Each patient has their individual reasons that trigger their complex partial seizures and this also applies for other types of seizure. In identifying the type of seizure and what causes it, seizure precautions and actions can be planned. There are different types of seizures that range in severity of the convulsions and the extent of the seizure in the brain. If this would occur only in one area of the brain and the patient remains conscious, this would surely be a partial complex seizure. Patients may still be able to speak, understand words, smell, taste, and hear, but only one of the senses are affected.

When it comes to complex partial seizure, more than one of the senses is affected causing the person to lose consciousness or awareness of the surroundings. There may be instances when a patient would still be awake but is unable to respond to questions. If this occurs, it will also be identified as complex partial seizure because the person loses awareness which can be observed when the patient is spoken to. Actions such as twitching, walking in circles, rubbing of one’s hands, and unnecessary movements are only some of the characteristics of people who experienced complex partial seizure.

What You Can Do To Help Patients with Complex Partial Seizure

Because of the severity of the effects of a complex partial seizure on a person, sending the patient immediately to the doctor or the nearest hospital would be the best thing to do. For those with a friend or family member at risk for complex partial seizure, they are advised by their doctor to watch certain characteristics that may be observed with the patient from time to time. With the technology today, even video recording of the seizure is also used for the doctors to see the actual even when it occurs. This helps them monitor the duration and identify the type of seizure that the patient has experienced.

Since complex partial seizure may not lead directly to unconsciousness, it will be helpful to check for the awareness and reasoning of the patient. This will not only help you determine the severity after a seizure but it will also help stimulate the brain of the patient. More importantly, avoiding situations and activities that heightens the risk of a complex partial seizure on a patient is always the number one requirement to avoid these health concerns from occurring and escalating.

Seizures are specific to every individual and display different seizure symptoms in adults. Since there are different types of seizures in adults, there are different symptoms of the seizures as well. In some cases the symptoms of the seizures are profound that its clear pone is suffering from epileptic seizure. In other cases such as in the petit mal seizures in adults, the symptoms are so mild that they are often mistaken for a distraction or lack of interest. The seizure symptoms in adults are likely to be dependent of the area in the brain that has been affected.

Common seizure symptoms in adults

The most common seizure symptoms in adults are convulsion. Convulsion is one of the most profound symptoms of seizures. In most cases it involves a vigorous jerking of the body parts. The jerking is a result of involuntary and uncontrolled muscle contractions and expansion. In some cases the jaw may be involved in the jerking causing the patient to bite on their tongue resulting to bleeding from the mouth. The seizure symptoms in adults might be an indication of a tonic clonic seizure or grand mal seizure. This is relatively common when one is referring to epilepsy seizures in adults.

The other seizure symptoms in adults might be isolated to a particular group of muscles. This means that the effects of the seizure are less vigorous and might sometimes pass without the knowledge of the other people. Some of the symptoms are mild sensations such as fear, stomach discomfort or unpleasant smells. This type of epileptic seizure falls in the category of the petit mal seizures in adults and is mostly considered to be an aura. The seizure aura usually exhibits the same seizure symptoms on occurrence. It’s a belief that the seizure auras usually occur just prior to a convulsive seizure. The seizure symptoms in adults are usually associated to the type of seizure, but the area affected by the seizure contributes to the symptoms. Since damage to the brain is the main cause of seizures, the area that is damaged will usually exhibits the symptoms occurring in a seizure. The symptoms that one suffers are usually a testament to the region where the electrical charges are being produced in the brain.

Dealing with symptoms of seizures in adults

The first step that one should take upon realizing the seizure symptoms in adults is getting diagnosed. Detection of a seizure may be tough or easy depending on the symptoms. Some seizures in adults such as the petit mal seizures in adults might be tough to detect. When one visits a medical provider, tests on ones condition are done. The tests may involve digging up the history of the epileptic seizure in the family. In some cases data is best extracted from tests from seizure symptoms in adults.
There are different tests that a doctor can perform to one experiencing seizure symptoms in adults. The tests are offered based on parameters on the patient’s condition, seizure circumstance as well sage. Some of the common tests that are ordered by doctors include blood tests, lumbar puncture, MRI or CT scans as well as Electro-encephalo-graph. A series of these tests may be ordered by the doctor depending on the seizure symptoms in adults and health condition of the patients.

Treatment of the seizure symptoms in adults is the final stage in dealing with the condition. In some cases the patient may require medical prescriptions, whereas in other cases it may be extremely crucial. The medical prescriptions are usually offered with the aim of controlling the epileptic seizure. Some of the medication offered may result to an increased occurrence of the seizures thus needing change. The treatment of seizure symptoms in adults usually involves checkups and follow-ups with the health care providers to ascertain the efficiency of the treatment.

Petit mal seizures in adults are one of the mildest and undetectable types of seizures in adults. The seizure is a generalized seizure that usually lasts about 15 seconds, during which the patient has no idea on their condition. The symptoms of the seizure do not include loss of consciousness nor do they involve any convulsive movements. Once the condition attacks the patient, they are momentarily lost in space. The patient may seem deep in though or showing a lack of interest and occasionally smacking their lips. The occurrence of petit mal seizures is usually as a result of minor brain disturbance due to electrical neurons misfiring. The petit mal seizures in adults are also referred to as absence of seizure, but it is regarded as a realistic seizure.

Dangers of petit mal seizures in adults

In most cases the petit mal seizures in adults are not considered dangerous. The seizures may occur alone or in association with other seizures. The absence seizures in adults may be caused by a number of triggers although in most cases epilepsy is the main culprit. There is a profound relation between the occurrence of the petit mal seizures in adults as well as with children. In adult the epilepsy is a rare case. Children tend to outgrow the effects of epilepsy that might have been passed on from parents. Although epileptic seizure is not contacted physically, it is passed on from parent to child but at a mere 5%.

The triggers of petit mal seizures in adults might be results of brain damage from physical trauma, illnesses, aging, substance abuse among others. As adults, there is a high chance of getting engaged in accidents that might result to a hit on the head damaging part of the brain thus absence seizures in adults. One might also be exposed to conditions such as meningitis or stroke that might affect the brain thus giving rise to seizures in adults. Seizures in the elderly are usually as a result of aging and a reduction in the immunity of the adults. The aging and chronic illnesses that are associated with aging often cause the seizures in adults. Using and withdrawing from drugs such as alcohol, heron and cocaine also trigger the petit mal seizures in adults.

Detection of the petit mal seizures in adults

The petit mal seizures in adults might be very elusive. Some of the relations to the environment are the only identifiers that one might have the condition. The occurrence of absence of seizures may range from once to several times a day and mistaken for lack of attention or other behavioral traits. Detection might come in if one detects a drop in performance at work, learning disabilities and momentarily hesitations. The absence seizures in adults is hard to detect since the patient is usually wide awake, in control of their mental faculties and unaware of the seizure soon after it ends. A neighbor might note the epileptic seizure since one may be gazing into space, immobile, fumbling hands, fluttering eyelids, chewing or even lip smacking without reason, all while the patient is unaware of their actions. Some of the triggers of the petit mal seizures in adults might be from the surroundings such as flashing of bright lights, hyperventilating or stress.

Petit mal seizures in adults and its treatment

It is advisable that one gets to the doctor as soon as the absence of epileptic seizure symptoms is identified. The treatments may be medical or non medical, but should never be ignored based on the low effects of the petit mal seizures in adults. Some of the lifestyle behaviors such as alcohol consumption or sleep deprivation also cause the absence of seizures. It is upon the patient to ensure that they maintain proper anti seizure practices to minimize the occurrence of the seizures in adults. Once the petit mal seizures in adults are detected, a checkup is necessary for it might reveal underlying problems.

The ketogenic diet for adults is one of the oldest methods of treatment of the elderly with seizures. The logic behind the diet is forcing the body to burn fat as opposed to carbohydrates for its energy needs (ketosis). The diet is a great help to epilepsy as well as Alzheimer’s disease which may trigger epileptic seizure in old age. Since one of the triggers of seizures in adults is imbalance of the blood with elements such as sodium, glucose and water. The diet is a sure way to keep the balance constant thus avoiding types of seizures in adults and elderly. The ketogenic diet for adults has been used in controlling the occurrence of epilepsy seizures for years.

Origin of the ketogenic diets for adults

The ketogenic diet for adults might have been as old as the bible itself, but it came to light in 1921. The diet was developed by Dr. R. M. Wilder for his patients suffering from epileptic seizure. The derivation of the diet is tricked from the practice of starving the epileptic only allowing them to take in water. The starvation resulted to the body relying on stored fats or energy. The ketogenic diet for adults thus initiates the same biochemical changes that the body takes up in fasting. The processes are now identified to be ketosis, acidosis and dehydration. The diet was used up until the development of the first anticonvulsant drug that is often referred to as Dilantin (Phenytoin).

Side effects of the ketogenic diets for adults

Although the ketogenic diet for adults is used in the control of seizures in adults, it has several ill effects. The side effects are one of the reasons why one cannot maintain the diet for too long. The body naturally requires all food groups for healthy growth. When one minimizes the carbohydrates and replaces them with fat to treat types of seizures in adults, there are bound to be se effects. One of the most common side effects of using the diets is stunted growth, with children and young adults. This is because there is the lack of necessary proteins for growth. The diet also restricts the use of water to 80% thus causing dehydration of the body. There is also the high possibility of kidney stone or gallstone formation. The body structure also suffers from bone fractures and weight gain. High cholesterol, nausea, vomiting and constipation are other effects of the diet. There is also a deficiency in the minerals present. The pancreas also suffers from inflammation. Women also tend to get menstrual irregularities. On stopping the ketogenic diet for adults, there is an accumulation of body lipids as the body stacks on the proteins.

Unlike most diets, the ketogenic diet for adults is not any do it yourself diet. The diet is part of therapy that is necessary for controlling types of seizures in adults. One should not partake in the diet without having to first clear with the medical practitioners and undergoing some tests. There are too many risks and effects that are involved in taking on the diet. Although the ketogenic diet for adults has the allure of relying on natural foods, it is a scientific menu that selects on foods differently.

One should also understand that the ketogenic diet for adults doesn’t work for its entire patient in the same way. Some epileptic seizure patients are adamant in resisting the diet while others respond on the diet better than on drugs. During the period of the diet, there are temptations of including some carbohydrates and sugars in the diet. The diet to control seizures in adults also includes a list of products that the patient should avoid since they have sugars. The products also include personal effects such as toothpaste. Regardless of the pressures on the ketogenic diet for adults, it is always advisable to consult the health care giver prior to any decisions on the therapy.

Epilepsy is a condition of the brain and thus has no physical manifestations of its existence making the epilepsy symptoms in adults hard to spot. The problem with epilepsy is the fact that there are hundreds of versions of the condition. Since epilepsy is generalized as a condition of the brain, there are various sections of the brain where it may originate. It might even result to being a combination of seizures in adults. The symptoms of epilepsy will depend on very much where the brain has been affected, but the general symptom of the condition is occurrence of repeated seizures. There are usually two classifications of epileptic seizure. The same classification of epilepsy can be helpful in outlining the epilepsy symptoms in adults.

Symptoms of epilepsy in partial seizures

Partial epilepsy features are as a result of only a small part of the brain being affected. The epilepsy symptoms in adults in partial brain damage also differ depending on the extent of the damage suffered. The seizures in adults are classified into either simple or complex seizures. The simple seizures are where the patient remains conscious through the experience. Some of the symptoms of the simple partial seizures include a change in sound, smell, sight, feel or taste. There is also a huge feeling of déjà vu, a tingling sensation in both the arms and feet, muscles of an organ may also be stiff and one may also experience twitching on one side of the body. The complex partial epilepsy symptoms in adults may include strange and random behavior of the body all while the patient has lost his sense of awareness as well as cognitive abilities. Some of the common randomized epileptic seizure symptoms of the condition include smacking of the lips, making random noise and random hand gestures and motions such as rubbing one’s hands.

Auras are the most common type of partial seizure. The epilepsy symptoms in adults in this case are a combination of signs. It is often a combination some complex and simple partial seizure symptoms. Although they are not considered dangerous, they might easily put one in harms way thus the need for immediate medication. The epilepsy symptoms in adults can be easily controlled once noted.

Epilepsy symptoms in generalized seizures

The cases of generalized epilepsy symptoms in adults are where most of the brain is affected. By default this means that the symptoms of epilepsy are also profound. Most of the common seizures fall under this category of epileptic conditions. The generalized seizures are usually classified into six types. The types of seizures in adults include absences, myoclonic seizures or jerks, clonic seizure, atonic seizure, tonic seizures and atonic-clonic seizures. These types of seizures exhibit different epilepsy symptoms in adults in both type as well as intensity. In most cases when people think of epilepsy, these are the cases most referred to such as myoclonic seizures in adults.

Absence seizures are relatively harmless and the general epilepsy symptoms in adults are a general lack of awareness. This can be exhibited by gazing into space, smacking of lips or fluttering the eyes. Myoclonic seizures in adults on the other hand are characterized by jerking or twitching of the limbs and the upper body. The jerks and twitches occur as if one was electrically shocked and are common in the morning hours. Clonic seizures jerks are similar to those of myoclonic seizures in adults, but will last longer in occurrence. Atonic seizures cause the body muscles to relax while the tonic seizures cause the muscles to contract. The tonic-clonic seizure is the epileptic seizure that most people dread. The seizures are usually longer in occurrence and are often the most common. The epilepsy symptoms in adults in this case occur in two stages. The body experiences stiffing of the muscles and twitching of the body.

A seizure is an instance where the brain triggers a production of a huge amount of electrical impulses and that’s what causes seizures in adults. This is often portrayed by involuntary and uncontrolled muscular spasms, jerking of the body parts, unconsciousness or even momentary memory impairment. The symptoms may be singular or multiple depending on the cause of the seizures in adults. There are stimuli to what causes seizures in adults such that one may have a number of different seizures respective of the cause. Just as there are different types of seizures in adults, there are different treatments for the conditions. It is important to note that seizures can affect anyone at any age or location.

What Causes Seizures in Adults Genetically?

In genetics, adults may suffer from seizures if it was passed down from a parent and the child not treated. It has been documented that it is possible for a child to contract epileptic seizure from their parents, a credible clarification of what causes seizures in adults. If either parent has epileptic seizure, there is a 5% of the condition being passed on. Some of the children outgrow the condition while in others it’s treated successfully. In other conditions the condition may be persistent to adulthood. The condition might also be retriggered due to a number of reasons depending on what causes seizures in adults.

One of the reasons for the occurrence of seizures in adults is injury to the brain. This means that what causes seizures in adults might be as a result of suffered physical trauma to the head. Unfortunately, there are some genetic predispositions such as meningitis that might cause seizures to the adults. The development of conditions passed down from parents differs such that they may cause seizures in adults. There are a number of conditions that might be what causes seizures in adults or trigger the reoccurrence of seizures in adults.

Other reasons for what causes seizures in adults

There are other conditions related to what causes seizures in adults other than passed down conditions. There are numerous situations in which one may suffer permanent or temporary brain damage. The reason why most types of seizures in adults such as epileptic seizures are children and adults is the susceptibility of the brain. Both the elderly and young have low immunity and thus may suffer illness quickly. One of the medical conditions classified associated with what causes seizures in adults of seizures is a low supply of oxygen to the brain. The limited oxygen supply may result from a birth complication or a physical oriented injury such as heart attacks, stroke or any physical head injury.
The blood composition is another trigger that might lead to seizures in adults, hence some considerations such as the ketogenic diet for adults. Some of the elements in the blood such as glucose, magnesium, water and sodium can easily cause a seizure. The elements may be excess in the blood as a result of diet or even a condition of the digestive system. Patients that are affected by epileptic seizure or any other type of seizure might be advised to keep of certain foods or products to avoid what causes seizures in adults.

There are other contributors to causes of seizures. One of the common causes to both people who have seizure history and those who don’t have is substance abuse. The use of drugs n the medical and illegal field might trigger different types of seizures in adults. The use of drugs usually causes toxicity to the blood and thus the brain. Some of the culprits include alcohol, cocaine, ecstasy, heroin or any drug interfering with seizure medication. Sometimes missing a drug dosage cold also leads to the seizures in adults. Lack of enough sleep or a change in sleeping patterns might stress the body enough to be an answer to what causes seizures in adults.

Myoclonic seizures in adults are just one of the types of seizures in adults. The seizures occur based on the same logic as other seizures. The seizures are categorized as generalized seizures together with the clonic, atonic, tonic, atonic-clonic and petit mal seizures. The condition is one of the convulsing seizures in adults and is relatively easy to detect on occurrence. Myoclonic seizures in adults are identified and characterized by the jerking of the arms and legs as well as the twitching of the upper body. It also involves a loss of awareness and may result be falling of the patient.

Diagnosis of myoclonic seizures in adults

The myoclonic seizures in adults are one of the convulsive seizures and are relatively easy to detect. The problem with the condition is that it might easily be mistaken for another form of seizure. Due to this, one should then be prepared to be checked up by a qualified doctor. The diagnosis process may be determined by the age of the patient, the condition of the seizure or the data gathered from the history of the patient. The best way to detect the generalized types of seizures in adults is via brain imagery treatment options such as MRI and CT scans. The scans will be helpful in detecting the myoclonic seizures in adults by looking into the brain activity of the patient. Other tests such as lumbar injection as well as blood tests are conducted to ascertain the condition of the patient.

Treatment of Myoclonic seizures in adults

Upon detection of myoclonic seizures in adults, the doctor should offer the patient the available options for treatment. The cause of the condition is usually a determinant of the treatment option to take on. In some cases medicines may be helpful in treating the seizures in adults. However some of the anti seizure medication also trigger the occurrence of seizures. Thus the form of treatment requires a follow up with the doctor irrespective of the types of seizures in adults. When one is in doubt, it is advisable to seek a second opinion on the myoclonic seizures in adults. One may also use other alternative treatment methods such as the ketogenic diet for adults.
<!--

An attempt to control the myoclonic seizures in adults could be via the ketogenic diet for adults. The ketogenic diet is normally a high fat diet that lowers the amount of carbohydrates in a patient diet. This forces the body to rely on fats to provide energy. In some cases the diet has worked very well with some seizure patients, but it might not be the best solution to every individual. Due to the side effects that are associated with the treatment of seizures in adults, it is advisable that the patient engages the healthcare provider in an evaluation to start on the diet. The ketogenic diet for adults can be used as an additional treatment option to the myoclonic seizures in adults.

Another option in treatment of myoclonic seizures in adults is usually surgery. Using the surgery option to treat the myoclonic condition is only done if the patient has hemorrhage or a tumor in the brain that is resulting to the convulsions. This is a method of treatment that is quite invasive and a lot of risk is involved. Most people usually turn to this as a last resort of treating the problem of the myoclonic seizures in adults.

Additional precautions

Since the myoclonic seizures in adults might be triggered by a number of causes, it’s advisable to avoid as much of them as possible. One should avoid any substance abuse to minimize the occurrence of the seizures. When one’s method of treatment involves the use of drugs, it is essential that one follows up on the treatment to analyze the proceeds on treatment. In the event that a given medical prescription initiates seizures, the patient should contact their doctor as soon as possible. Seizures in adults are common during treatment, but if a seizure occurs for more than 30 minutes emergency help should be obtained. Treatment of myoclonic seizures in adults is best done with some help.

Epilepsy is a brain disorder that is associated with epileptic seizure symptoms. It is a condition where the nerve cells of the brain cluster and the transmission of electrical impulses is thus disrupted. The unusual generation of electrical impulses by the brain usually results into uncontrolled and involuntary convulsions, thoughts, feelings and emotions that are symptoms of epileptic seizure. The condition is quite common in young children, but it’s also prevalent in adults. There is no known cure for the different types of seizures in adults, but children usually outgrow the condition which eventually goes away with time. Epilepsy was the first brain disorder to be medically identified and thus most of the seizures are associated with the condition. Since the condition is not transmitted over touch and via other physical means, it cannot be picked up. The epileptic condition can however be passed on from parents to children via genetics. A parent who suffers from epilepsy has a 5% chance of passing on the condition to the child, but the children often outgrow the condition.

The mention of epileptic seizure usually draws attention to the symptoms of the seizure. One of the common perceptions with most people is that the epileptic seizure symptoms is always a convulsive seizure. While it is true that epilepsy may cause the convulsive seizures in adults, there are also variants of epilepsy that do not give off the same seizure symptoms in adults. The convulsive seizure is referred to as a generalized tonic clonic seizure. It is characterized by seizure symptoms in adults like being unconscious, uncontrolled twitching and movements, dazing, exhaustion and loss of bladder control.
There are other types of epilepsy responsible for epileptic seizure in adults. Absence seizures have always been associated with absence of epilepsy and are quite common in young adults and children. Other common types of seizures in adults that are responsible for focal seizures are temporal lobe epilepsy seizures. The focal seizures in adults are also referred to as auras. Neocortical epilepsy also results to seizures originating from the brain’s cortex or the outer brain layer. Such epileptic seizures in adults cause different types of epileptic seizure symptoms such as hallucinations, muscle spasms and emotional alterations.

Causes of epileptic seizure symptoms

Epilepsy seizure symptoms is triggered by damage to the brain. Any trauma or condition that will result in damaging the brain cells and nervous system will trigger epileptic seizure in adults. The triggers of epileptic seizure vary from one individual to another. The area of the brain that is affected usually has a bearing on the triggers. The causes of different types of seizures in adults are both endogenous as well as exogenous. The most common triggers of internal originated seizures are brain damage. Some illnesses and conditions such as stroke usually trigger the epileptic seizure. There is also a possibility of the triggers being as a result of external associations.

The exogenous cause or triggers of the epileptic seizure symptoms revolve around straining the brain. In most cases this happens via intoxicating the brain. The abuse of substances such as drugs is one of the triggers of the condition. Prescription medicine as well as illegal drugs and alcohol are triggers to the seizures. In some cases withdrawal from the same may cause the seizures in adults as well. An imbalance of the blood composition such as increased levels of sugar or sodium also triggers the occurrence of different types of seizures in adults in adults. Other factors such as hyperventilating or low oxygen supply have also been known to cause epileptic attacks. Although these are some of the known triggers of the seizure symptoms in adults, there are some cases when attacks of the condition are inexplicable especially if they regard psychological activity. The best thing to do is to try and avoid the epileptic seizure symptoms triggers as much as possible, though unavoidable in some cases.

There are two main types of seizures in adults. The types of seizures are partial seizures and generalized seizures. The classifications of seizures are used for all types of seizures regardless of the cause or condition of the patient. In most cases epilepsy is considered to be the sole cause of seizures but there are some non epileptic seizures. It is important to state that even the epileptic seizure is included in the generalized and partial classification of seizures in adults. The origin of the seizure in the brain is the principal that is used in the classification of the seizures. It is necessary to state that one may be affected by both the generalized and partial seizures at the some instance. The types of seizures in adults are not restricted to one category in their activity.

Partial or focal types of seizures

The partial of focal types of seizures in adults are used to describe seizures that affect a single part of the brain. The seizures are common with most epileptic cases of seizures. Some of the seizures might be mild and are thus regarded as simple partial seizures while others might be a bit complex and are referred to as complex partial seizures in adults. The focal seizures mean that an individual may be diagnosed with frontal lobe seizures, but the intensity of the damage often results to differing epilepsy symptoms in adults. In the partial simple seizures, the patient doesn’t loose their conscience or awareness which is unlike the complex types of seizures in adults.

Generalized seizures on the other hand are seizures which have the electrical impulses misfiring on both sides of the brain. These types of seizures in adults are responsible for most of the convulsive seizures. They cause the patient falls, injuries and even loss of consciousness. The generalized types of seizures in adults, which arise as a result of this type of electrical signal misfiring, are also subdivided into six sub categories. The seizures include tonic seizures, absence-seizures or petit mal seizure, atonic seizures, clonic seizures, atonic-clonic seizures and myoclonic seizures. These types of seizures are usually characterized by epilepsy symptoms in adults that are highly convulsive. They are the perception that most people have when seizures are mentioned. There is twitching, jerking and an occasional bite on the tongue.

Non epileptic types of seizures

In most cases the seizures in adults are caused by a condition in the brain resulting from trauma or a medical condition, but there are exceptions. Sometimes it is possible that an individual exhibits all the symptoms of some types of seizures in adults and not have any seizure activity in their brain. This is often referred to as non epileptic events or pseudo seizures. The condition is usually a psychogenic event that usually results from an individual being stressed or in need of psychiatric help. In some conditions, the people who have any non epileptic seizure also have the epileptic seizures and have to undergo two different methods of treatment since the non epileptic types of seizures in adults can’t be treated in the same way as the epileptic seizures. Other medical conditions such as tourrette syndrome and cardiac arrhythmia brought on by narcolepsy may also have similar epilepsy symptoms in adults as any epileptic seizure.

Due there being the non epileptic seizures in adults, it is difficult to ascertain the type of seizures a patient is suffering from. In these cases vigorous methods of treatment such as MRI and CT scans are useful in brain imagery. If the brain impairing types of seizures in adults are observed, then intrusive measures such as surgery might be opted for, in the mild situations medication is used to control the condition. With such cases the patient has to make arrangements with the health care provider for checkups. Sometimes the medication used may aggravate the situation of different types of seizures in adults thus calling for a change in prescription.

Seizures in adults are quite common unlike the belief of many. Children are more susceptible to illnesses as well as seizures, but so are some adults. There are several factors concerning the condition that puts the adult at greater risk than some children. The adult has more chances of suffering injury to the brain over the child and thus is more susceptible environmentally. Since there are various types of seizures in adults, some types are common to the adult over others. Some seizures in adults are carried on from conditions in infancy.

Factors that trigger seizures in adults

Seizures in adults are not contagious and cannot be transmitted from one individual to another physically. The only possible transmission of the condition happens between the parent and the child, in the case of epilepsy. Not all types of seizures in adults are derived from adults, but if an adult has epileptic seizures there is a 5% chance that their child will be infected by the condition. The pass down through genetics is weak and most children outgrow the condition. There are some cases where the seizures strike at a later stage in life such as in the teen years. In these cases it leads to seizures in adults, thus indicating that anyone may suffer from a seizure.

Seizures in adults or children are usually as a result of damage to the brain. There are different types of seizures depending on the region of the brain affected. There are biological and non biological triggers of seizures and it is possible to suffer from different kinds of seizures. Triggers of seizures in adults are dependent on the type of seizure one is suffering from. Epileptic seizure in adults is as a result of the patient suffering from epilepsy. In this case, the brain of the patient is damaged from a birth condition, genetics, trauma or any other form of damage to the brain. This means that the seizure symptoms in adults do not have to be triggered and the cause is medically unclear as of today.

Susceptibility of adult

The other seizures in adults might be provoked by the patient. In this case the abnormal electrical production and conduction is induced by the patient’s activities. The triggers of seizure symptoms in adults are usually substance abuse, use of certain prescribed drugs, alcohol and drug withdrawal as well as blood composition imbalances. The occurrence of the seizures normally cease once the problem has been remedied. The use of the triggering substances may result to a recurrence of the condition, hence the term provoked. The patients of this type of seizures are not considered epileptic.
There are other seizures that are classified as non epileptic. These are seizures that display the seizure symptoms in adults of normal epileptic seizure but do not have the origin of the condition in the brain. The seizures are as a result of other body actions such as fainting, psychological conditions as well as a muscle disorder. Such seizures in adults are quite common especially where the patient is under lots of stress psychologically, emotionally as well as physically.

Treatment of seizures in adults

There are several treatments available for seizures. Some types of seizures in adults do not need medication while others require it. The treatment of the seizures differs on the type of seizure as well as the impact of a drug on the patient. Its is essential that one visits their local health care for a diagnosis as well as a number of follow ups to ascertain the effect of a given treatment course of action.
