We can still see the strength in character played out in season 2, but instead of focusing on the main cast - - like knowing them outside of the game and such -- S2 gives us the portray of every character (and dog) that comes to screen for elevating the intensity and enjoyment of the game itself. It's this shift of focus that makes the difference for me. Season 2 is still consistently awesome and strong, but I personally prefer S1 better.

I wouldn't label which ship is the main ship yet. Suetsugu-san likes tossing the romance thread up in the air torturing us the viewers, making us guess and doubt forever -- it's like how she likes to torture Taichi...lol. Chihaya is still quite clueless in my view -- she idolizes Arata and seeks his approval. In Karuta, I think Taichi is fighting for his Class A status for staying at the same level as Chihaya and Arata. As Chihaya mentioned in episode 1, what she cares the most is for Taichi making Class A. I think -- or I hope -- with the remaining episodes, we can at least see that happening -- this will be absolutely moving and one hell of a game. I also want to see the Arata/Shinobu match -- it will be the talented vs. the talented. In love, it's too early to tell. The romance side of the story is always like the elephant in the room, and I think the creator uses it very well as a hook to keep us wanting more. As such, I think Taichi stands a chance.

Hah, that's it! I've always wondered what was missing, but you're right-seasons two's characters were sidelined. Even with the new members like Sumire and Tsukuba, things basically stayed the same within the group, with little to no change in their dynamics.

Still, there are some bright spots, no? Besides the recent episode 19 you mentioned, I thought the tiff between Porky and Desk-kun was a highlight, even if it was a bit too short. Can't say much about the others though, their stories were limited to some cameos and typical one-liners.

"...it would be really awesome if the matches in the remaining episodes will be focused on — with Chihaya being injured — Taichi, Arata, or even the rest of the club members."

I wish I could say the same, but I think it'll be Chihaya's show again because Arata's there. Can't have the main ship being ignored, right? =( Btw, with Arata in the picture, do you think Taichi stands a chance against him? Both in karuta and romance, of course. XD

Season 2 of Chihayfuru has been great -- I was at the edge of my seat week after week, and it still carries its biggest strength -- its characters -- that we saw in S1. Having said that, the direction has somewhat shifted to focusing on Karuta than its characters, which have become secondary and play a support role. I totally missed the connection with the main cast, and that has made me feel like something that I loved so much in S1 disappearing in S2. Then episode 19 came along and brought the spot light back to the main cast -- it was definitely a nice nostalgia, and I can't help but mark it down as the best S2 episode so far in my book. I don't think the direction of S2 will change, but it would be really awesome if the matches in the remaining episodes will be focused on -- with Chihaya being injured -- Taichi, Arata, or even the rest of the club members.

I'm kinda torn between the two, actually. But since Azusa's got the moe and expression advantage for now, I'm siding with her. Wonder what will happen when Tsukiko finally gets back her expressions?

Before this, I couldn't really see Tsukushi having trouble with expressions. She expressed herself very well with her previous fits of cold anger, no? Perhaps it's her _true_ expressions she has trouble with. But still, what would she express? She wanted to distance herself from Tsukiko, so wouldn't her cold facade be right?

Gah, you have a point. I didn't like the way they deceived her lightly, but their good intentions are important too. Guess it's Shinka and Rikka from Chuunibyou all over again , huh? I guess I have a sore spot against trickery and bullies in anime. XD

Did she reveal her true (and rather cute) face because of the bun or because she didn’t need to hide behind a cold exterior anymore? Henneko doesn’t promise much plot-wise, but I wish they made this part clear.

Yeah, I wish they made this part clear too.

And yes, I didn't expect the appearance of a second stone cat either...

P.S. As much as I like Azusa, Tsukiko ftw.

Well, the meat bun held Tsukiko "expressions" so Tsukushi now has them where before she had them but couldn't express her feelings.

Also don't think that the two girls are really bullies. They just made a dumb mistake because they originally wanted her to come to Okinawa with them but tried to trick her because they didn't think she would come, but might come if they said it was Hokaido they were going to. Their plan backfired, but they had no mean intent Azuki just didn't understand and thought they were just playing a mean trick on her. She transferred before they could explain themselves. The three of them sleeping on the bed I think shows that they really like her.
