Before this, I couldn't really see Tsukushi having trouble with expressions. She expressed herself very well with her previous fits of cold anger, no? Perhaps it's her _true_ expressions she has trouble with. But still, what would she express? She wanted to distance herself from Tsukiko, so wouldn't her cold facade be right?

Gah, you have a point. I didn't like the way they deceived her lightly, but their good intentions are important too. Guess it's Shinka and Rikka from Chuunibyou all over again , huh? I guess I have a sore spot against trickery and bullies in anime. XD

Did she reveal her true (and rather cute) face because of the bun or because she didn’t need to hide behind a cold exterior anymore? Henneko doesn’t promise much plot-wise, but I wish they made this part clear.

Yeah, I wish they made this part clear too.

And yes, I didn't expect the appearance of a second stone cat either...

P.S. As much as I like Azusa, Tsukiko ftw.
My recent post Hiromi in Kyoto: Day 7, 8, 9, Conclusion

Well, the meat bun held Tsukiko "expressions" so Tsukushi now has them where before she had them but couldn't express her feelings.

Also don't think that the two girls are really bullies. They just made a dumb mistake because they originally wanted her to come to Okinawa with them but tried to trick her because they didn't think she would come, but might come if they said it was Hokaido they were going to. Their plan backfired, but they had no mean intent Azuki just didn't understand and thought they were just playing a mean trick on her. She transferred before they could explain themselves. The three of them sleeping on the bed I think shows that they really like her.

And I'd actually disagree with that assesment of Butcher Gen. The brief moments of Fate/Zero that rose above just good and pretty much all of Madoka Magoka showed a writer with a really keen mind. The problem was that when he wrote both of those, he wasn't a superstar. Since becoming a big name, I've seen a trend where there are less people who can really tell him his ideas are sit. Think of it like George Lucas in the prequels

Thank God for someone finally calling out this show's profound mediocrity!

Almost every review I read of Gargantia waxes ecstatically over its fine writing and beautiful narrative. I don't think it's garbage, and I DO think it's pretty (Ghibli-esque, as you suggest), but the incredible banality of the story so far is hard to fathom when I keep reading reviews suggesting that it may well be a classic in the making.

Some time ago I read something which made the interesting observation that Gen Urobuchi is a "competent" writer, and therefore the bane of anime. For while simple competence is too often lacking in anime scripts, aspiring to nothing more than competence means that we are likely missing the real greatness that comes with taking chances with messy and sometimes crazy-seeming stories.

Shows like Gargantia only drive that point home. If all I want is plain competence, there are plenty of places to get it. I watch anime for the wonder it can provide...which is so far completely missing from Gargantia.
