So the Beijing Olympics are over and to my mind, it was the best planned and most memorable one in recent times.

I am not saying this because I live in China. Just seeing how things unfolded on tv was truly amazing. London 2012 is going to have a hard act to follow.

Then you had the sporting achievements - Phelps 8 gold medal haul and my fellow Jamaican Usain Bolt superhuman feat in the 100 and 200m, all adding to the spectacular nature of Beijing 2008.

After the Olympics had concluded I thought for a moment about what I could learn from it. The most pervasive theme throughout the games for me was - perseverance.

Had China placed a bid for the Olympics 30 years ago - they probably would have lost. I dare say, 30 years ago, the country might not have been able to afford to put on such an event.

30 years ago, former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping had a vision for China’s economic prosperity. He flew the doors open to the world and 30 years later, China is the fastest growing economy in the world.

This prosperity didn’t happen overnight. It was a gradual process sort of like what education is.

You don’t even have to go back 30 years. Four years ago, the world’s fastest man Usain Bolt - wasn’t the world’s fastest man. He had a lot of talent but he was not at the top of the sprinting world.

Four years later, he is on top of the heap and deservedly so. He has worked hard since he was a teenager.

I know it sounds like a cliche but if you want to be successful in any meaningful endeavor - you’ve got to take action for the long haul.

This doesn’t mean that success will necessarily take long. I just think you have be prepared for the scenario that it could take long.

That is just the way life is. Some people get lucky and win the lottery; some people start a business and within weeks it is profitable. More often than not though, success takes much longer than we expect.

So, if your career sucks and you want a new challenge or if you want to move up the corporate ladder, what do you need to do to make it happen?

I think you know what you need to do - most people do. But they sabotage their desires because they think about how long it is going to take and that scares them into inaction.

You’d be amazed at the progress you could make if you cut down on some of the distractions in life, like tv and partying and use that time to work towards your adjectives.

If you are an international student studying at college and your family and friends are back home, you calling them or they calling you, can get pretty expensive.

Of course, there is always skype and online chat services which are free to use. Nothing however, beats the joys and convenience of  your family picking up the phone and calling you. Hearing a familiar voice in a strange land can be very comforting to an overseas student.

Well, I have found a new service on the net that allows you to get an international toll-free number that forwards to your local number where you are studying. This way,  your people back home can call you for free whenever they wish, without having to worry about the cost.

So for example, if you are studying in U.S. and your family is in China,  you can simply buy some call time with this company, choose a Chinese  toll-free number and give it to your family. They’ll be able to call you for free on their end. The calls would then be forwarded to you in the U.S.

I can tell you that the call rates are very reasonable. As a matter of fact, this company will give you a $10 free trial for 10 days. So you can test out the service and if you don’t like it, you can cancel within that period without paying a penny.

I also found the sound quality to be very good and from what I see on their website, they serve most of the countries in the world.

Oh, one more thing. You are gonna need a debit or credit card to use this service.
