When the original maverick of Hindi film industry gets outmaneuvered by a newcomer, then one knows that change is here to stay. After a spate of big-budget archetypical Bollywood potboilers, it isheartening to see that the faith in low-budget tales told from the heart is very much intact. The phenomenon that made small-budget film “Aamir” a success, though it was released alongside “Sarkar Raj” that had Amitabh Bachchan his son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya Rai, was not a flash in the pan but is here to stay. We as an audience obviously have no grudges against the typical masala stuff, infact all of us enjoy such kind of movies. But for true cinema lovers what will be ideal is the peaceful co-existence of all kinds of cinema. The industry needs big-budgeted movies like Om Shaanti Om and Devdas to fund small movies like Aamir, Mumbai Meri Jaan and Bheja Fry. The sheer diversity in movie releases these days goes to show how far Hindi cinema has come from the days when films strictly followed formulas and points to where the industry is headed.
Gone are the days when cinema was passed on as legacy. Today this industry has grown to such an extent that anyone…anyone…me, you and yes you too.. all of us can write a refreshing story, and make a movie. All of us have some story to tell, then why not tell it to the whole world? The sudden emergence of young breed of actors, directors and musicians finally confirms that the industry and the box-office has finally let go of the old prejudices and welcoming new ideas with open arms. With so-called multiplex movies like “Mithya”, “Jab We Met”, “Khosla Ka Ghosla”, “Bheja Fry” and “Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na” – doing well, the day when independent expression and mainstream masala films begin to co-exist at the turnstiles are not far. The Hindi filmdom will no longer call filmmakers who harbour this dream, maverick or the unbecoming fool. The audience has grown up. With more than eight channels beaming the best of cinema — local and global — right into your living room, movie consumption has tripled, so exposure is tremendous.
The young actors and directors today are so efficient that even the biggies like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan are willing to experiment and try out something new along with them. With their fresh and out-of-the-box approach they are bound to make Indian movies and actors equal to that of Hollywood biggies. What makes these young people and their movies so different? The fact that these people do not fear experimenting and are willing to take the untrodden path. Another advantage these young guns have is that they are no strangers to the Hollywood or world cinema trends. Infact they have been exposed to the best of both the worlds.
These film-makers have been trained just like their Hollywood counterparts and hence employ same kind of writing and techniques as used in Hollywood flicks. These people have easily overcome another roadblock, that being the language. Today with most of the flicks using Hinglish in plenty this gap between the Hollywood and Bollywood is being bridged.
Here are some of the promising young film makers….
1) Abhishek Chaubey
Ladies and Gentleman…Put your hands together for Abhishek Chaubey. This is the man who gave us a fascinating tale about love and lust, greed and deceit and down right cunningness boiled in passion that is embedded in true life characters that you can see on a day to day basis or even in some mirrors. This man gave the girl-next-door Vidya Balan a complete make over, in terms of looks and character. It was the realistic handling and perfect presentation that made the film absolutely engrossing and kept the audiences glued to the seats till the final titles roll-over and lights came on. From the Vishal Bharadwaj’s School of Film making this young director,writer has penned the dialogues for movies like Omkara (also won a Filmfare award for the same), Kaminey and Ishqiya.
2) Ayan Mukerji
Good looks with oodles of talent – That’s Ayan Mukherji for you. The man…oops boy who gave us ‘Wake up Sid”, the story of a young confused boy and his journey. It had a constant flow throughout, no over the top or understated drama, no ultra emotional strangulation of audiences, absolutely no yuppie cool dude act, and last but not the least, this is an original and refreshing story. Ranbir Kapoor was anything but a hero in this movie and Konkana Sen was more than happy to play women five years older than Ranbir. Despite of the odd pairing there was this something that brewed between the two and it pretty much gave us a true picture of a platonic relationship. There was no ‘overnight transformation’ in this movie and that was a refreshing change for the audiences.
3) Sagar Ballary
The first name that comes to ones mind is Bheja Fry. This man managed to impress the audiences with his maiden directorial venture. It was a simple clean and unique story. It didn’t have any of those vulgar, double meaning jokes that are used as a stimulant in the comedies these days. It was film about an idiot intelligently made and very well received. This man introduced us to a new era of Bollywood which relied more on brain than brawn. With some pop-corn and some bheja fried this movie was a gourmet dish.
4) Amit Trivedi
This singer, lyricist and musician shot to fame in the Hindi film music scene for his critically acclaimed work in Aamir and more recent one Dev D. Deck the halls with boughs of holly and watch out for this talented man in the upcoming, most awaited movie Aisha. The feel of his music does its own talking and that’s the style of this young music director.
5) Prateek Babbar
Yet another promising star-kid with grrrreeeeeeat looks! He made his entry in Bollywood sans all the fanfare usually associated with a launch pad. Since it was a debut vehicle for Aamir Khan’s nephew, Imran Khan, and the film being an Aamir Khan Production, attention was bound to be focused on Imran. But that didn’t stop Prateek form signing on the dotted lines as he wanted to make it on his own, without the ‘star-kid’ tag attached. Streaks of the legendary Smita Patil are evident in this young actor.
There are many more upcoming young actors, film-makers and musicians who are coming into Bollywood in a big was and they are here to stay! Curtains up for them!

Pitt’s character Louis de Pointe du Lac from 1994’s ‘Interview with the Vampire’ has earned him the top spot in a new WENN.com monster list, putting him just ahead of Pattinson by a handful of votes.

Dailystar.co.uk reported that Pitt scored 44 percent of the 1,000-plus votes, just one percent more than Pattinson, who plays Edward Cullen in the ‘Twilight’ franchise.

Bollywood titles: Now a song, now a film

Lack of creativity or too much inspiration, call it what you will, but too many Bollywood filmmakers are referring to contemporary songs for the titles of their films.
A string of forthcoming films like "Kajraare", "Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai", "It's My Life", "Allah Ke Banday", "Zindagi Milegi Na Dobaara", "Anjaana Anjaani" and "Dil Toh Bacha Hai Ji" have their titles inspired by popular Bollywood numbers.
While "Kajraare" takes inspiration from the Aishwarya Rai-chartbuster in "Bunty Aur Babli", "Banda Ye Bindaas Hai" is a direct lift from the song to which Amitabh Bachchan and Nandita Das waltz in "Aks".
"Allah Ke Banday" from "Waisa Bhi Hota Hai - Part II", an evergreen hit by singer Kailash Kher, is now also the title of Farouque Kabir's film that stars Naseeruddin Shah, Atul Kulkarni and Sharman Joshi.
The title for Zoya Akhtar's next, "Zindagi Milegi Na Dobaara", has been picked from the title track of her brother Farhan's hit film "Rock On!!" Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Farhan, Katrina Kaif and Kalki Koechlin form the cast of the movie.
Madhur Bhandarkar's first romantic venture is titled "Dil Toh Bacha Hai Ji", which seems to be inspired by a heartwarming track in "Ishqiya".
And similarly, the title of "Anjaana Anjaani", starring Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra, is based on the words from a song in "Yuva".
The Deols' next, "Yamla Pagla Deewana", is again a hit number picturised on Dharmendra in the movie "Pratigya". Even Abhishek's "Dum Maro Dum" and "Guzaarish" are a take off from popular songs.
"It's My Life" is also a famous English number by international rocker Jon Bon Jovi.
Even "Bummm Bumm Bole" and "Chance Pe Dance" that have already been released this year have been named after two widely known songs - the fun number "Bum Bum Bole" from "Taare Zameen Par" and "Chance Pe Dance" from Shah Rukh Khan-starrer "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi".
In less than a few years from their release, songs are being readily transformed into titles for films.
Earlier too, filmmakers have looked at old songs for their movie titles.
Ace filmmaker Karan Johar picked the title of both his hit films - "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" and now "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" are taken from lyrics written by writer-filmmaker Amit Khanna, who is now the chairman of Reliance BIG Entertainment.
The former was a phrase out of the song "Uthe sab ke kadam" from the film "Baaton Baaton Mein", and "Kabhi alvidaa na kehna" was a line from Khanna's song "Chalte chalte mere yeh geet yaad rakhna" in the film "Chalte Chalte".
Even Aditya Chopra's mega hit "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" still running in Mumbai's Maratha Mandir, was a popular line from the song "Le jayenge, le jayenge dilwale dulhania le jayenge" picturised on Shashi Kapoor and Mumtaz in the film "Chor Machaye Shor".

A R Rahman leaving Bollywood for Hollywood?

A R Rahman’s international career which has taken off in a biggish way after Slumdog Millionaire, keeps encountering snags, thanks to long-pending assignments back home.
According to sources Rahman has to keep interrupting his international plans to be home for various pending assignments.The harried composer is now seriously thinking of putting all home-made assignments on hold to concentrate on building his career abroad, or else he feels he would lose the international advantage he obtained after Slumdog Millionaire.
Says a friend of Rahman, “The Indian assignments after Slumdog Millioniare have been very time-consuming, especially Raavan where Rahman not only had to do two versions of the music in Hindi and Tamil, but director Mani Ratnam also asked him to give 3-4 tunes for every lyric before one was selected.
The music of Raavan took more time than Rahman could afford, with the result that other Indian assignments primarily Abbas Tyrewala’s untitled John Abraham-Pakhi starrer got left behind.”
At the moment Rahman is back again in Chennai for mixing the music of Abbas’ film. But the background score of the film which releases in October is still be done.
No one is admitting it, but one of the primary reasons why Tyrewala’s film got delayed is the music score which Rahman has been serving up piecemeal, for no fault of his, since the composer was committed to be out of the country for half the year for his world concerts.
Says the source, “Rahman had to continuously keep breaking his international tours and other projects to be home for various reasons, like the music release of Raavan and other things. He has begun to feel that his international career would never take off if he has to keep returning home.”
Abbas Tyrewala, in Chennai with Rahman for the mixing of his film’s music, jumps to the composer’s defence. “Yes Rahman has been a little tied up and therefore unable to deliver quickly.
But that’s because he has to be constantly moving back and forth between India and the US. Raavan took much longer than Rahman thought. I’m not worried about my music. It’s almost done. Whatever time Rahman takes is finally worth the while.”
In the meanwhile Rahman has not signed a single new assignment in Mumbai or Chennai in the last few months.
After completing Abbas Tyrewala’s music Rahman will now focus on consolidating his career abroad.

Akshay To Be The Producer Of Hollywood Films

July 27, 2010: Our very own action idol Akshay Kumar is all set to invade the golden shores of Hollywood. He has ‘broken’ in the Hollywood scene with his Break Away. He is donning the role of a producer in the film and primarily would be away from the screen. The movie stars the Canadian-born Emily Van Camp and is directed by Robert Lieberman.
Akshay’s fame is on an implausible level in Canada. In recent news, he played host to both the prime ministers of the two nations, India and Canada.
The Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Stephen Harper, the Canadian prime minister had Akshay Kumar as their hosts in a recent dinner meet. Akshay always had a wish to produce Hollywood films via his own Hari Om Productions and now Break Away has given him that opportunity.
Here’s wishing him all the best. May he glorify Bollywood, may he glorify his nation and pave the way for other fellow Indian film personnel to foray into Hollywood.

It looks like Sonam Kapoor is going to be hot this year. Already her film I Hate Luv Storys have become a hit and Aisha is going to make its mark soon. And it looks like she would be working against the prolific actor Ben Stiller. Ben Stiller has done a huge amount of comedy based films, including Starsky and Hutch.

Anil Kapoor had recently met up Ben Stiller to talk about a joint production company together. During the conversation, Ben apparently talked about Sonam Kapoor when the topic came up, and Stiller wanted to see the rushes of the film.

After watching the Aisha rushes, Stiller offered Sonam Kapoor a role in his new movie. The new movie is called 30 Minutes or Less. . Sonam was thrilled with the offer and she was very happy to get the role. Another offer has come from Edoardo Ponti, Sophia Loren?s son, for his new project called Das. Sonam is currently busy doing a strong role in the film Mausam with Shahid Kapoor. She is also doing 'Thank You' with Akshay Kumar, and working on promoting her new film Aisha, made in the lines of Jane Austen's Emma.

Angelina Jolie's High-Energy Diet for an Action-Adventure Lifestyle

Angelina Jolie is a high energy actress especially when she’s filming an action-adventure movie like her latest film “Salt.” So how does she keep in shape while still maintaining her energy level? Her diet is just the opposite of most Hollywood stars.

Jolie ate a high-carb, low-protein diet while filming “Salt to maintain her weight while shooting her high-voltage stunt scenes.
“Angelina has to have 70 percent carbohydrates and 30 percent protein diet with an anaerobic training regime (as opposed to aerobic), so she can put muscle on without losing weight,” Jolie’s stunt instructor, Simon Crane, told Self magazine.
“Sticking to four or five meals a day routine as much as possible [was key],” Crane added. “Then when she reaches a good body level that we like, we change it to 60%-40% favoring carbs. No junk food, no empty calories, and alcohol only on weekends.”
Jolie, 35, did 99 percent of the stunts herself in the spy thriller, in which she plays a CIA agent accused of being a sleeper Russian spy.
While some actresses prefer not to run around and get dirty, Angelina, who admits she “never stops moving,” prefers to act out her own scenes as much as she can.
Crane, who has worked with Jolie for several years, says she had to wear protective pads in order to prevent scrapes, cuts and bruises.
“When she did the jump/fall [in a scene where Jolie jumps from a bridge onto a moving truck below], she was wearing a rucksack which we put a lot of soft padding in,” explains Simon.
“She also wore elbow, hip and knee pads. The stunt was accomplished by a combination of real fall and wire work.”
Angelina, who previously took up karate and weight lifting when she played Lara Croft in the 2001 and 2001 blockbusters, also underwent fight training for Salt.
“For her fight training, we got her learning a combination of Muay Thai and Krav Magha very early on,” says Crane. “We would then pick the moves she was best at and combine them into a sequence.”
He recalls: “The training, at the early stages, took up about three to four sessions a week, lasting approximately two hours each. When we started filming, we trained during lunch breaks or on the weekends.”
He adds: “One of the important issues was to bring Angie’s body and mind up to a level of fitness that would enable her to take on same of the physical pressures of Salt.
I work with my usual team and her stunt double, Eunice Huthart, is also her trainer (which is lucky, since Angie does 99% of her own stunts, Eunice would otherwise be unemployed!)”
