Charleston Children Photographer: Basketball baby

Mr Elliot came to see me for his 6 month session and I though it would be cute to put him in the newborn basketball set he wore. I still get a ton of inquiries about this photo of him! It is one of my favorite.

He LOVED my camera. I think he was fascinated by the click and he just laughed and laughed.

Elliot's family was one of the first families I photographed! I did a family session for them when I was first starting out and this is the same jacket his brother was wearing. He was 6 months old then too! I just love that they have stuck with me for the very beginning!

Sweet baby boy Aaron came to see me at 14 days new. This little man was a special miracle and I was so so excited that his Momma and Daddy chose me to capture his special memories.

Daddy is a firefighter and Aaron's room is done in a firefighter theme. I was so excited Daddy brought all of his stuff with him.

Of course we had to get the sweet baby boy stuff too!

Sweet Miss Carleigh came to see me for her 3 month grow session right around Christmas time, yes I am behind! She was so stinking cute and has the most amazing eyes!!!

Sweet Miss Willa came to see me at 10 days new in my West Ashley studio. She was so cute and her Mom and Dad brought some super cute props to incorporate into her session. She was such a good baby!

I had a beautiful maternity session out at Folly Beach with this Momma to be. It was a rather cool and windy day but we still got some great shots!

The sky was amazing as a storm was rolling in (the best skies are then generally) and we made the most of it.

I love how the moon was coming out too, it was a great backdrop for some great photos!

Sweet Mr. Cameron came to visit me at 12 days new. He was so good and such a little peanut! His room is done in Dr, Seuss theme so we had to get a shot to match it!

I generally like bright colors so I am always thrilled when I get to use lots of colors on a session! He did not disappoint looking great in all of my colors I picked out!

I just love this shot! This basket is one of my newest favorite props as it can literally be used on any kind of session and looks good with everything. I'm pretty sure I use it at every session now! Look at how cute he looks in it!

The wrinkled forehead and "old man" look here are killer, so cute!!!

I am honored to be able to take maternity (and soon newborn) photos for this lovely couple. This little man is their miracle baby and he is so very loved!

Sweet Mr Keegan came to see me with his Momma Daddy and big brother when he was 7 days old. He was such a good boy and man is he a cutie!!

Daddy is a big penguin fan so he had this hat made for him!

He already has such a good big brother who was concerned every time Keegan made even a peep it was so cute!

Well, hello there! I’m excited to be featured here and hope I can help with some tips on photographing twin newborns! As many of us know, newborn photography takes quite a bit of patience...so basically you have to have double the patience with newborn twins.

The first bit of advice, is that you have an assistant. This helps keep the babies happy at all times. Not only does this help you out, but it also gives momma some time to rest and have a break.

Second, remember to always photograph each baby individually as well. Parents like to see details and differences of each baby. I begin photographing the bigger of the two individually and then I gently “stack” the other as above to get that adorable together shot. Be sure to keep both babies in focus, either by increasing your aperture or taking two photos, one of each baby’s eye levels and then creating a composite photo if needed. If you can keep their eyes on the same plane, you should be able to capture with a low aperture and have both in crisp focus.

Third, if the babies don’t like tummy shots, you can almost always tuck them side by side on their backs. Again, just take your time and be patient. It works great to have your assistant hold one baby’s arms and legs in position as they settle into the pose. Use a wrap to keep them nice and tucked so that they are comfortable.

And lastly, use different props or wraps to show gender differences. Keeping your images simple and clean will give parents those adorable features that they love in each baby.

If for any reason, that babies won’t tolerate skin on skin, then the wraps are easy fixes. Twins often spend some time in the hospital after birth and aren’t used to being next to one another once the photo session comes around. So this is always a great option in that case.

Hopefully you have learned something new and again, just remember to be patient and don’t rush. The babies will cooperate for you if you remain calm :) Thank you again for the feature and look forward to seeing some wonderful twin newborn images!

Sweet Miss Grayce is one of my husband's good friends little girl. She actually lives in another state but was in town visiting at around 4 weeks and came over for a visit. So I stole her and whisked her off to my studio for a little fun. Never bring a baby around a newborn photographer and expect to get away!!

For a 4 week old she was SO good and gave me about 30 mins of fun with some quick wardrobe changes before Mom and Dad had to go.

Even with older babies I will always try to get photos that parents will treasure although it is always good to book in advance as nothing is guaranteed.

I got to meet the Fredricks family for a family session right before Christmas. They were very sweet and had the cutest little boys!

They braved the elements at the Memorial Waterfront Park in Mt Pleasant for some greta photos. It was cold, VERY foggy and windy.

Sweet Miss Avery came to see me at 7 days new. She was the cutest and did a great job. Mom brought some things with her (including her big sister, Kali the families dog) and this veil that mom wore in her wedding. I love incorporating things like this into the sessions.

I like to think I have made it as a photographer when my friends start hiring me to do sessions for them. This family has been one of my closest friends for a long time and we have kids very close in age. So arranged marriages and all aside I am so excited they asked me to document their family.

I love these kids like they were my own.

Charleston Newborn Photographer Newborn posing safety

I have had quite a few people ask me how I get newborns into some of the cute and difficult looking poses I do. So I thought I would do a post on newborn safety! Anyone working with newborns or children in general should be very concerned with safety. It is NEVER worth a cute shot to put a baby in danger and if your photographer does anything you are uncomfortable with please speak up. All difficult shots should be done as a composite with someone's hand on the baby at all times. For instance the photo below.

I had mom helping me the entire time and the baby always had a hand on him for this pose.

The same with this next shot. This pose, the froggy pose, has become very popular and can be difficult to do. Mom assisted me with this pose and I only attempt this pose with babies that are being very compliant in their sessions, sleeping well and easy to pose. I would never force this pose and it is not a pose all babies can be put into.

Another example of the froggy pose with daddy's help.

Even with older babies it is important to be safe. This little lady is not sitting up yet by herself so Mom's hand was on her at all times.

Even fairly simple looking poses like this one can require composites. I always make sure either myself or mom or dad are near by during my sessions and have an eye on the baby at all times. Newborns can easily move or jerk and shift around and I would much rather be safe than sorry. It is important when looking to book your newborn session that you make sure your photographer is practicing safe newborn posing and has been trained on proper technique.

Sweet Miss Kenzie came to see me at 10 days new. She was a dream to work with and it turns out so are her parents! She is part of my (now large) group of Firefighter parents here in Charleston. I am so honored that so many of the Firefighters have chosen me to take photos of their sweet additions. Also I think there may be something in the water at the Firestations!

This little lady had her daddy wrapped around her little fingers and toes!

This was a fun beach session I had in my mind for a while. Luckily I have a good friend that lives right near the beach and her kids get up super duper early and I was able to talk her into bringing them out to make my vision a reality.

I made the raft myself, with a little help from my handy husband.
