Cathedral Rock Trail Hike in Sedona, Arizona

During my Arizona road trip, I completed some hikes, and the Cathedral Rock Trail had to be the most challenging. This one is intense! It is not for everyone to try. If you have heart issues, asthma, or breathing issues, I wouldn't recommend this hike to you. However, you can go as far as your body will allow, as you are using your hands and feet to climb steep rock formations, and you are scaling them because they can be slick after rain and because they are smooth. There are white markings to help you take the best, most efficient route to the top. If you make it up to the very top, you will have beautiful views, and there is an even further climb up if you venture to the left of the 'End of Trail' sign. I show you what it looks like in the video. Phone connection was in and out, so I had to resort to still photos at times, but I gave you good insight into what you can expect on this one. Come early and bring water. I always carry a backpack with water among my other things.

It was a beautiful morning, not too hot at all. I started at 9:30AM and finished the hike about an 1 hr later, but I did stay at the top for a while to take in the views after reaching the 'End of Trail' sign. I came on a Monday, so parking was open and available after waiting a bit for someone to leave. A free shuttle is available Thursdays through Sundays, but the parking lot is closed at the trailhead. If you come on Monday through Wednesday, you can pay the fee at the kiosk to park or display your America the Beautiful pass for free access to the hike.

Hiking to Devil's Bridge in Sedona, Arizona

During my Arizona road trip, I decided to do a couple of hikes, and Devil's Bridge is a popular hike in Sedona, Arizona. I went on a weekday, but if you decide to go Thursday through Sunday, it will be busier, and there is also a shuttle available on these days only. This hike had some uphill sections, so prepare for a test of your endurance. Once you get to the top, you will see Devil's Bridge.

The signs are posted clearly, and I enjoyed hiking with other hikers along the way, so I felt safe. I saw a coyote during the hike, but he wandered off into the woods, and we continued on our way. If you are a solo hiker, you will be fine. I parked at the Mescal Day Trail, which was indeed the best option because of the bathroom access, and there was more parking available. I did get an America the Beautiful Pass since I was visiting various National Parks. There are many options. I'm a military veteran, so I got that one for lifetime access, but choose which one is best for you and/or your family. On my hike, I wore my hiking shoes; I carried ample water, my power bank, and my backpack, and I was okay.

I decided to explore parts of Arizona I haven't been to on a week-long road trip for my birthday. The first stop on my Arizona road trip was Winslow, AZ. It's a small town, but it has a pleasant energy and flow. It's a nice place to relax, enjoy a meal, and take in the town's historical vibes. I saw the beautiful Standin' on the Corner mural, and there was live music happening on the Saturday when I passed through. It's a quick pit stop before you head to the much-anticipated Meteor Crater.

During my Mediterranean cruise, I visited the beach town of Kusadasi in Turkey. There are many places to visit and things to see. The area is beautiful and very modern. I also visited popular destinations, including The House of the Virgin Mary, The Basilica of St John the Apostle, and Ephesus, an ancient city with excavations reporting from classical Greece to the Roman Empire.

Travel opens up so many opportunities to learn, grow oneself, and discover new ways of thinking and being. The video blog below shares a look at the destinations I had the chance to visit.

We were supposed to visit Santorini; however, the cable cars were being repaired while we were passing through, so we were redirected to Chania. Naples, Italy, is where I traveled to visit the once bustling city of Pompeii. The culture and their daily happenings were insightful and eye-opening. In the cruise vlog below, I visited the city through a Mediterranean cruise I booked aboard the Sun Princess with Princess Cruises. The morning started off with a stateroom breakfast, then an early morning start to Pompeii. I enjoyed every minute of this shore excursion, and the weather was perfect for a light jacket in February.

I traveled to Rome for a 10-day inaugural cruise aboard the Sun Princess. To make my travel simple, I purchased the transfers provided by Princess Cruises. Once I arrived at the port, I checked my bags at security, then checked in and boarded the Sun Princess. It was all very straightforward. The embarkation night was easy-going, with main dining, live entertainment thereafter, and a comfortable bed to recharge.

In the video below, I completed a room tour of the deluxe room with a balcony, explained muster, and was very pleased with the vegan options in the main dining room.

Vlog: Attended National Date Festival in Indio, CA (Feb 13 - March 2, 2025)

In this video blog, I attended the National Date Festival in Indio, California. It opened this past weekend and I decided to attend, purchase some dates, and watch some cute pig racing, and Monster Trucks with a pre-show of biker stunts! Wow! What a fantastic day.

There are rides and games to play. It's easy to purchase your tickets at the entrance to the festival and tickets for rides and games. There's a schedule of events throughout the festival so don't forget to get a brochure and date food and drink list. This festival is open now through March 2, 2025. If you're in the area, there's so much to see, live music, railroad model trains, gems and minerals, shopping of all kinds, food and drinks galore.

Valentine's Day is the perfect excuse to decorate for the loving, happy, joyful occasion. I recently purchased two 16.5-inch Valentine's Day Wreaths from Amazon and I love them for indoors and outdoors. They require two 'AA' batteries and have two options for lighting, constant and flashing light. I had them displayed indoors, but since we are finishing January in a couple of weeks, it was time to display them outdoors. They are full and the lights are spread evenly throughout the wreath. If you're not a crafty person, this is a great option for you. The lighting option adds another element to your Valentine's Day decorations. These wreaths are available on Amazon and they arrived nicely packaged and within reasonable time. On the menu: Pastrami Mami (vegan)

I was craving some well-made vegan food and decided to go to Chef Tanya's Kitchen in Palm Desert, California, for the first time. Upon entry, plenty of seating was available at this location, and many specialty items to browse. I looked through her desserts and decided to try a sandwich for lunch, the Pastrami Mami with a side of her potato salad. This restaurant is completely plant-based and the pastrami is made of seitan, the main protein of wheat. If you like Reuben sandwiches, then this Pastrami Mami is a vegan take on that, which was my favorite sandwich before I became vegan so I gave hers a try. The plant-based pastrami was moist and seasoned well. The sauerkraut, pickles, and vegan pastrami is what made this sandwich tasty. The vegan cheese was present but I didn't taste it as much but the flavors were amazing.

I would definitely order the Pastrami Mami again in the future. Chef Tanya has a potato salad that has fresh herbs and the potatoes are cut into chunks, not all mushy, which I enjoyed. I could taste the potatoes along with its other ingredients. I could eat the potato salad anytime, well done with that side.

If you're in Palm Springs during the summer, the idea of a hike might sound intense with temperatures soaring above 100°F. However, for those seeking an adventure that combines natural beauty, cultural history, and a refreshing escape, Tahquitz Canyon offers an unforgettable experience. Recently, I took this hike during the summer and enjoyed every minute.

A Journey Through Time and Nature

Tahquitz Canyon is located a short drive from downtown Palm Springs and is a sacred site for the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians. The 2-mile round-trip hike is not just a trek through the rugged desert landscape, but a journey through time. There are points on the trail where I had to step up onto large rocked paths, but a good pair of hiking shoes and trekking sticks, if you need them will get you through it. Along the way, you'll find ancient petroglyphs, bedrock mortars, and the stunning Tahquitz Falls, a 60-foot waterfall that provides a cool respite from the heat. I spent a good amount of time here, many visitors brought swimwear to plunge deeper and enjoy the cool water. Although it was summer, there was still a nice amount of water in the basin for visitors to enjoy.

Summer Hiking Tips

While the canyon's beauty is undeniable, summer hiking in Palm Springs requires some preparation:

Start Early: The early morning hours are the best time to hike Tahquitz Canyon. Not only will you avoid the peak heat of the day, but you'll also have the chance to enjoy the trail in relative solitude. I started out on the trail at 7:45am and finished the entire visit by 10:00am before the sun really brought the heat.

Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate: Bring plenty of water—at least a liter per person, which is required to hike this trail. There is a refilling water fountain in the Tahquitz Canyon Visitor Center to refill your water bottle. The desert heat can dehydrate you quickly, and there’s no water available on the trail.

Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, breathable clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to protect yourself from the sun. Don’t forget the sunscreen!

Know Your Limits: The hike is moderate, with some rocky and uneven terrain, but the heat can make it more challenging. Listen to your body and take breaks in the shade when you find it if needed. Most of this trail is open to the elements so there's not much shade so consider that when you hike this trail.

The Reward: Tahquitz Falls

The highlight of the hike is undoubtedly the Tahquitz Falls. Even in the height of summer, the waterfall flows steadily, creating a cool, misty environment that feels like a hidden oasis in the desert. The pool at the base of the falls is an inviting spot to sit and relax, letting the sound of the water wash away the stress of daily life. Many visitors brought their swimwear and went into the water and others took off their socks and shoes and took a walk in the water to cool off.

A Cultural Connection

Tahquitz Canyon is not just a place of natural beauty, but also of cultural significance. The canyon is named after the legendary spirit Tahquitz, who, according to Cahuilla legend, resides in the canyon. As you hike, you’ll notice signs that explain the history and significance of the area, providing a deeper connection to the land. When you grab a brochure, you will see the various red symbols on rocks that share more details about specific areas in the canyon.

Recently, I visited my bestie in Atlanta, Georgia. We decided to try the Slutty Vegan restaurant together since she had never gone there before and I was vegan. Upon entering the establishment the music was playing and it was a casual atmosphere. The staff were working hard, dropping the french fries in the hot oil to prepare their Slutty Fries, preparing various sandwiches on the menu, and to-go orders. While waiting for our food order, we observed the dessert truck display and the merch on the walls.

There was limited seating at the Slutty Vegan Edgewood location so we decided to go to the park to eat and see what we thought about our food purchases. As we left, we noticed the line had become longer as more guests came in for the noon food rush.

In the video below we reviewed their Hooker Fries, The Fussy Hussy, and Project Chik sandwiches. All sandwiches included the seasoned Slutty Fries.
