Erotica Authors Venture Where Others Fear to Tread
by Elene Sallinger

Be warned – 18 + only please!!

Sex. One of the most natural acts a person can perform and yet it is treated like a plague by the average writer. In fact, there is a distinct code by which sex is described so as to prevent the non-erotic author from being sullied by such subversive words as “clitoris” or “orgasm”.

Personally, I grew up with this code none the wiser. Heroines didn’t cum they “fell over the edge into ecstasy.” Heroes didn’t get their dicks sucked, they were “tasted”. Men didn’t have cocks they had a “manhood” and the list goes on.

Nothing I read growing up prepared me for the gritty reality of sex. The pristine, two-line scenes in my Barbara Cartland novels couldn’t encompass the scents and sounds and sensations that make up truly carnal sex.

Sadly, it wasn’t until I stumbled upon my first piece of erotica that I understood the difference between sex as it is written in the general lexicon and a truly erotic sex scene. That was also when I understood that to write a good sex scene, the erotica writer must be fearless.

The erotica writer must embrace the language of sex and wield it deftly. Ironically, the erotica author is often ridiculed as not being a “real” writer simply because we choose to explore sex and use the language of sex to its fullest. It’s almost as if the usage of the word “cunt” negates ones artistic credibility.

To that I say simply … bullshit.

I contend that it takes true skill and creativity to write a sex scene that draws you in and titillates you while remaining arousing. There is always a danger of tipping over the ledge into a clinical recitation. Truly skilled erotica writers engage the senses and the brain leaving you as wet and breathless as the main character.

That takes true skill. That takes courage.

The erotica author goes where others fear to tread and that should be celebrated not reviled.

—————————————

Thank you so much for hosting me! It’s a pleasure to be here.

Thank you so much for being here Elene!!

This is the story of Claire Ryan and Evan Lang. 35-year-old Claire joins a local book club for romance readers in order to get over the breakdown of her 10-year relationship, there she meets book shop owner Evan, a dominant man who has never recovered from the sudden death of his submissive wife.

As their relationship develops and they embark on the path of Claire’s submission, it becomes harder and harder for Evan to keep his emotional distance. Claire is open and responsive and he wants her badly, but refuses to let himself go.

As Claire falls deeper in love with Evan, she realises that he is holding back and decides to end their relationship, forcing Evan to confront his own past and his feelings in order to save his new love.

When you are reading, what make a character compelling to you? Is it the same aspects that make a character you are writing compelling?

“Unlike many readers I don’t want to see myself in the role of the hero. I want characters who have something I don’t, something real, unique and different. I love getting to learn about someone who is unlike myself and broaden my horizons.”

–Emma Michaels

“I enjoy characters that are multi-dimensional. They have to charm me, but they also have to make me want to smack them in the head when they make mistakes. No one’s perfect, so characters shouldn’t be, either.”

–Raine Thomas

“A believable character, even if the world is not. I hope so.”

–Quinn Loftis

I want them to have flaws, just like normal people do. I also don’t like it when characters are always good or always bad. I want them to have layers. Maybe a character is mostly a good person, but is there something that could convince the person to do something bad even though they think they’re justified in their actions? Does the bad guy have a weakness that shows why they do the things they do?”

–Shana Norris

I’d take a character with some deep, dark secret over a popular female high school student with a nasty mean streak.”

“Chatty, witty, thoughtful characters that take risk and seek thrills. You know the mad kind. Not really my characters, I don’t force them, they are.”

I don’t like characters to be wholly good or wholly bad. I hate the perfect guy who never puts a foot wrong. Again, it’s not realistic, and it’s entirely one-dimensional. Guys mess up. Girls mess up. Everyone does. It makes for a very dull, very predictable book. I love characters who are flawed and tortured, and who take some figuring out. It’s great if a character can flat-out floor you with their actions when you expect them to do something completely different.”

Whiny, weak minded, wishy – washy MC’s grate on my nerves. I also look for a human element, something that connects them to me in a personal way. If I can say to myself, “Yeah, I know exactly how he/she feels, I’ve been there too,” I’m pretty much sold on the character.”

I know that’s a bit self-centered, but it’s the truth. I like characters that I can see myself in. The more I can relate to a character the more I like them. That’s why I’m in love with each and everyone one of my characters, because they hold a part of me in them. I pour a certain part of my soul into each of my characters, making them close to my heart no matter what.”

Slowly Jennifer turned her head to take another look at the big guy leaning against the wall. Was he really looking at her? And if so, why?

She got brave. Out of her right eye she took a good long look at him. God knows she had never seen anyone that tall. He was no less than 275 pounds, solidly build, raven black hair combed straight back. He had a stern hard face with a perfect square chin. There was something about him she couldn’t quite put her finger on. It was like he was a wild animal on the prowl for something to consume, yet she sensed a gentleness about him like she did with most animals.

Strange, he’s been in the house for a while and its dark outside, why is he still wearing those shades? Maybe he’s a celebrity she didn’t recognize. Then again, maybe he’s high and trying to hide it.

He was richly dressed in an Italian black custom silk suit which had been tailored to fit his large frame. No suits came off the rack and looked like that. His black shirt, definitely silk, was unbuttoned to the middle of his smooth muscular chest showing his dark tanned naked skin.

Why does a man like that wax? Surely with his dark hair and features he would definitely have chest hair. Just as she was giving him a once over, he reached up with one hand lowering his glasses and looked directly at her. He had the most penetrating midnight black eyes she had ever seen.

With their eyes locked on each other she was lost, hypnotized, as she felt him reach into her soul. She knew he caught her staring at him, yet she couldn’t turn away. Part of her wanted to remain lost in his eyes, the other part of her wanted to run for her life.

Raphael’s eyes fluttered open. He saw the familiar woman with her long platinum hair blowing in the wind as she walked towards him. Her face was all too familiar yet he still didn’t know who she was. He searched his mind trying to remember if she’d ever told him her name in all the hours they spent making love in his dreams. He was too weak from blood loss to focus his cognitive abilities–instead he just stared at the beautiful angelic looking young woman who knelt down beside him.

Wondering if he was dreaming he finally asked, “Who are you?”

She brought her finger up to her lips in a motion to quiet him. Her lips didn’t move yet he heard her say, “I am the one for you.”

The beauty leaned over him, her long hair draping him in a coverlet of warmth. He looked into her eyes. Those eyes, there is something about those eyes.

She placed her wrist on his lips and heard her say, “Drink and live.”

He was too weak to do anything else. He closed his eyes and took which she offered so freely. His nostrils filled with the scents of benzoin and orange blossoms. The warm ambrosia of her blood tasted sweeter than the finest navel oranges he had ever sampled. He moaned, then moaned again as his body reacted instantly to her life giving blood. His pulse quickened, his heart skipped a couple of beats and his erection grew to its full length yet it remained hidden behind the zipper of his pants. Having his angel on top of him, feeding him, in real life and not in a dream, was beyond his wildest fantasy. Raphael knew in that one moment she was the only woman for him and he would go to his grave before he took another.

AUTHOR BIO:

V.S. Nelson has always enjoyed reading stories with strong relationships and happy endings so it’s not surprising she found herself writing across the romance genre.

Landing in Arizona, after an exciting teaching career, which took her to the Middle East for several years, she lives in Arizona where she spend most of my time making love to her computer while writing, editing or researching, seven to ten hours a day. The days she’s not writing, you will find her with my critique partners at Starbucks, attending or presenting a workshop or at a RWA meeting.

Being a Native American woman and a Scorpio, she’s always had a fondness for history, mythology, the occult, and the unexplained events which have occurred on this world we call home. It was no wonder she found herself writing a paranormal series.

Interview

What inspired your new release? I knew after writing book one there would be at least three books to the Sekhmet’s Guardians series, although I never imagined it would become an eleven book series… at least in the beginning. After completing the first three books in rough draft form I began to look at publication options.

Tell us about any WIPs you have. I juggle between several projects. Currently, book three is with the editors and I am putting the final touches (rewrites) on books four and five of the series. I also have started an urban fantasy series. The second book in the Cupid and Penelope Adventures will be released early next year in addition to two other titles not related to either series. Hubby 4 Hire and Sins of a Man, the Story of a Mafia Hitman.

How many people ask you to read their books? I read daily and am a fast reader so to say I read a lot is an understatement. Because I am very active in three RWA chapters and two other writer organizations I’m also asked to read work by other authors in addition to those I am a critique partner with. I also receive quests from beginning authors or individuals who are seeking a career in writing. On an average I would say I receive no less than five requests a week.

In a word sum up your writing style. Coming from a long line of Native Story Tellers I’ve been told that my writing carries on that tradition where I try to combine telling and showing allowing the reader a visual of what is going on with the characters and plot as if they were sitting in the same room with them.

Do you have a character you enjoyed writing the most? Singling out one out of so many is difficult but I will say that Ronan, Jennifer and Jessica’s father has captivated my continued interest. When he first presented himself to the others he was very rigid, formal and very quiet. Over time much of that has changed. We not only see changes in Ronan but we learn more of the Selkie race all together, the more contact the Guardians (and readers) have with him.

Is there a genre you would like to try? I’d love to write a screen play for the big screen.

Could you live without coffee? There are three things I require to write. Coffee in the am, diet Pepsi in the afternoon and wine in the evening to help me unwind and relax so I can sleep.

Tell us one of your favorite jokes This really isn’t a joke… more of a funny story which revolves around me. I’ve always loved going to Renaissance fairs. And I am particularly fond of watching the jousting; even to the point of going to specialized dinner shows that include the Knights of the Round Table. Down the street from some good friends is a large building entitled Castle Boutique. I assumed it was like so many places I visited when I lived in California. They served a “Royal Meal” along with a great show so a couple of years ago on our way home from the Arizona Ren Faire I made the suggestion we go to dinner at the Castle Boutique. A round of laughter echoed around the pack filled car. I had no idea why they were laughing at me until someone said, “You really don’t know, do you? V, it’s an adult bookstore.”

Talking about wanting to hide under the seat…

Here are some questions you can choose to answer!

What’s your favorite thing about the writing process?

Three facts about you

(1) My first published piece was a poem I wrote in high school in 1968. My Creative Writing teacher submitted the piece on my behalf and it was purchased by a magazine. I went on to write (non-fiction) self-help and college text for over twenty years after I finished my education and long before I decided to try my hand at fiction.

(2) While teaching history at the university I instructed evening classes in psychic development, meditation, tarot and other esoteric studies at my home.

(3) I’ve been pronounced dead twice. The first time in 1978 then again in 1983.

Do you believe in UFOs? Of course, doesn’t everyone.

What was your favorite snack growing up?

Would you rather have fame or fortune?

Pick one book that is your all-time favorite? The Time Machine… I’m a big time Jules Verne and H.G. Wells fan and will read their work over and over again.

Embarrassing guilty pleasure -

Are you an introvert or an extrovert?

Favorites:

Muppet – Burt

Cartoon growing up One of my favorite memories is sitting on my grandfather’s lap and watching Heckle and Jeckle. Of course those younger than I may not know about Heckle and Jeckle as it never made it big like Bugs or Mickey. For those that don’t know they were two black crows and the jokes and mischief they got into were memorable.

Color- Without a doubt, Deep Royal Purple.

Type of Monster- Vampire.

Do you speed when you drive? Not as much as I did when I was younger

Spaghetti or Lasagna and why? Can’t I have both?

Your thoughts on Self Publishing For years, I believed like so many older authors, self publishing was considered a dirty word, but no longer. When I re-entered the writing world as a writer of fiction, I soon learned authors for the first time had other options. Fascinated with all the changes which had taken place in just a few short years, I took several classes and workshops geared for the self publishing author. I finally made the decision to turn down the two offers I was offered for my series in order to self publish. For the first time, I had control on content, how long my books would be on the shelves, what was on my cover, when and how my books were released. Of course, with that control, comes the responsibility to make sure your book is presented just as professional as if you had gone with a traditional agent and publisher. It is for this reason, I employ two editors (one line and one copy editor), cover artists and a wide range of promotional companies long before my books are set to print.

Your thoughts on Zombies Our society loves fads and like vampires, werewolves and aliens, I feel the craziness we are see for zombies will eventually fade into the norm.

Do you believe in the Loch Ness Monster? To be honest, I really don’t know. There are a lot of strange occurrences we have yet to discover on this planet we call Earth. I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if the Loch Ness Monster turned out to be real.

Are you a tweeter, a re-tweeter, or you couldn’t care less about Twitter? Tweeting has never been my “thing” but I am finally becoming comfortable with it. Like facebook and blogs it is a necessity.

Would you rather sit on a porch with sweet tea {insert other beverage if tea isn’t your thing} or go hiking with a bottle of water and a smile? Aside from my coffee, diet Pepsi and wine I mentioned earlier I love surprises and mixing it up. Think I’d love to go hiking on Saturday and sit on that porch with a cold glass of tea on Sunday to relax in the sun.

Your favorite type of music I love old 60-70’s rock.

Anything you would like to say to the aspiring authors reading this blog?Be true to your dream and to your muse and never give up for all things are possible in this every changing world we live in.

It’s the day before Christmas Eve and the second big snowstorm of the year is rolling into Detroit. Huge fluffy flakes are already falling as Jo runs to the supermarket to grab some much needed supplies–eggnog, cookies, ice cream–emergency rations for the holiday season. The only thing she’s lacking is someone to enjoy them with. Then she sees A.J., the hot guy who almost picked her up at a party last Halloween. He’s a tall, muscular, blue-eyed blond, with a smile that warmed Jo right down to her toes and he’s just as determined as she is to snag that last bottle of eggnog off the shelves. Should Jo be selfish and keep the drink all to herself, or let A.J. convince her to share some Snowbound Christmas Cheer?

BIO:

Veronica Tower was married to her high school sweetheart for five deliriously happy years and ten far less wonderful ones. Now she is taking the time to make up for lost opportunities. In addition to returning to school to pursue a degree in psychology, Veronica has committed herself to fully exploring her fantasies, both in writing and in person…

Interview

Hi Emily, thanks for inviting me to your site today to talk about Snowbound Christmas Cheer.

What inspired your new release?

Snowbound Christmas Cheer is the thirteenth volume of my Snowbound Series. I’ve been living with these books for several years now and I’ve gotten to known Kara, Liz and Thea very well, but I introduced two new secondary characters in the last volume (Snowbound Halloween) and I found I wanted to know what happened to them after the Halloween Party and the result was this new book.

Does that mean you’re done with the Kara, Liz and Thea?

Of course not, we’ve got a wedding to celebrate (two weddings if you’re keeping track). One of the very enjoyable aspects to this series is that it gives me a chance to explore a relationship as it matures past that first burst of magical attraction into enduring love.

Is there a genre you would like to try?

I’ve been thinking about writing a werewolf story for about a year now. It would be a new direction for me. The story is there in the back of my mind but it hasn’t quite fought its way to the surface yet. One of these days I think I’ll get it out on paper.

Would you rather have fame or fortune?

The primary reason that I write is because I have these stories bursting to get out of me and I want to share them with people. It’s my hope and prayer that these stories pull people away from the problems of their lives for a while and let them dream about other places where women they can relate to struggle to make their lives better. So fame or fortune doesn’t quite capture the motivation—although both would be signs that I am reaching people.

Your thoughts on Self Publishing

I haven’t tried self-publishing yet, but it seems to me it’s an increasingly legitimate option these days thanks to the miracle of electronic books. Publishing with a respected company lends a certain credibility to an author’s work and at least theoretically helps get the word out that your story is available to the public. Still, more and more established authors are experimenting with self-publishing not to mention thousands of people brand new to the writing field and many are having great success. It’s definitely something I want to keep my eye on.

Anything you would like to say to the aspiring authors reading this blog?

The biggest difference between authors and aspiring authors is that authors actually write. You would be shocked at how many times I have met people who have stories bursting to get out of them but can’t actually force themselves to sit down at the computer and start writing them. I tell them all the same thing: If you want to be author, you have to start writing and keep doing so every single day.

Writing is the ultimate creative process, but it’s also a discipline. Aspiring authors should set themselves a target, even if it’s only two hundred fifty words a day. The first few times you sit down to write it will be painfully difficult, but after a few days you will discover you’re writing a lot more than your small target and you’ll suddenly realize you have pages and pages of story unfolding.

That’s not the end of the process, of course. You still have to rewrite and polish to perfection, but you can’t do any of that editing until you first begin to write.

Thanks for having me today, Emily. I love to visit and talk about writing.

Veronica Tower

Camille Harper, about to finish high school, can see angels all around her. They appear to watch her. She has been able to see angels from birth, and while she is amused by this ability, she just wants a normal life with friends, family, and good times. Why can she see angels? She doesn’t know, but she believes the knowledge will change everything. Then she witnesses a confrontation between a beautiful angel and a dark winged creature. The strange event will signal the end of normal life.

Did the strange beings know she could see them?

Her friends want her to sneak out to an abandoned house for parties, but her instincts scream “NO!” Something is not right about the place. The hip new guy in school, Earl, wants to date, but she is afraid he will disturb her circle of friends, and there is something not right about him. Her parents aren’t doing well together. And whatever strange plot is developing, her sister may be in the middle.

Now, for the first time, Camille Harper is interacting with angels face to face. This is incredible, but when Jason Waters enters her life, she gets more than she bargained for. Her strange ability complicates life on a whole new level. Camille and Jason enter an exciting but forbidden relationship.

Strange beings present danger. What’s a Nephilim? What are fallen angels up to?

Jason believes something is strange with Earl, but Jason is hiding things from Camille as well. Which one is right for her? Are they both trying to possess her for supernatural reasons?

Camille just wants to make it through the year and graduate from high school, but changes are leading up to some apocalyptic event.

Can Camille continue Seeing Angels without her life going to Hell?

Author Bio:
Harmony Lawson was born on a naval base in San Diego, California. Currently, she and her family live in Northern California in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Her education is in drawing, painting, and writing. When she read her first romance novel at age 16, she became a hopeless romantic.
Harmony is fascinated by angels, and she incorporates research in angels, the Nephilim, and fallen angels into her fictional stories. Many of the descriptions in her books reflect actual documentation found in religious documents.
While she has endured many hardships in life, she believes life will be better tomorrow. Life has its ups and downs, trials and tribulations, and Heaven and Hell. She believes the bad times are a test to prove a person’s worth. Her books reflect on that concept.

Excerpt:

“I really want to see you again, Cami, but I’m not sure about this. I’m not sure I can.” His gaze is intense. There is no way for me to respond to that. I look down again.

He raises my hand to his lips and kisses. Electricity travels

up my arm. How can a kiss feel like that? Have we fallen in love

already?

“Why wouldn’t you be able to see me again?” I finally have to ask.

“Never mind, just pretend I didn’t say that.”

He is hiding things from me, and I know what they are. Attraction is making me so weak that I am tempted to tell him what I know. I have to fight it.

His warm hand is smooth on top and rough on the palm. My hand must seem cold to him. He can hold my hand as long as he wants.

He sighs and kisses my hand again. “We better drive back to your car. I don’t want to keep you out too late.” He sounds like a guy trying to avoid trouble.

EXCERPT:
I froze, too afraid to move. The steps began to get louder as each second passed. My heart was pounding to its own quick rhythm. A hand grasped my shoulder and I squeezed my eyes shut expecting the worse. I began to quiver uncontrollably, wanting to scream, to run as hard as I could, but my feet were frozen. I could only stand there as my tears mixed with the rain pouring over me.

The grip was released, and suddenly an arm snaked around my back turning me in the opposite direction. I couldn’t muster up the courage to look at the person helping me. I could only assume it wasn’t Aaron. Whoever it was had too gentle of a touch. Yet instead of feeling relief a sense of nausea washed over me. Granted, I was momentarily safe, but the emotions coursing through me had made it—for a brief moment—feel like it was happening all over again.

I didn’t want to be vulnerable in front of anyone who could take advantage of me. With my heart going 100 miles per hour in my chest, I tried to push away from the person and nothing happened. They didn’t budge and their grip around me was too strong. After many deep breaths, I got the courage to glance up into eyes the color of emeralds—eyes filled with concern. My legs gave out and I sagged in his arms. Steve didn’t hesitate. He slowly lowered me to the wet asphalt and sat there while I sobbed into his already wet shirt.
