Finally, new HIV treatment - Celsentri (aka Selzentry or Maraviroc) has been approved by the European Commission for use in the European Union.

The drug, generically known as maraviroc, is the first new type of HIV to be introduced in more than ten years.

First discovered at Pfizer's research center in Sandwich, England, Celsentri prevents the HIV virus from entering uninfected cells by blocking its main entry route, instead of fighting the virus inside white blood cells like conventional treatments.

Taken as a pill, it will be used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs in patients infected with a type of HIV virus known as R5. Not all HIV patients have the R5 form of the HIV virus.

Celsentri isn't for newly diagnosed patients, but only for HIV-infected people who are becoming resistant to other treatments.

New York-based Pfizer already markets the drug in the U.S., where it was approved last month, under the brand name Selzentry. Analysts believe the product could generate annual sales of $500 million by 2011.

Pfizer says the US Food and Drug Administration has approved the company's new HIV treatment Maraviroc (aka Selzentry).

Pfizer said the FDA granted accelerated approval for Maraviroc to treat adults infected with CCR5-tropic HIV-1 strain, which is also known as the 'R5 virus'.

Pfizer said the drug is expected to be available in the US by the middle of September.

I've just hear it thru a grapevine what antiretroviral therapy of HIV is on the rise this year.

I'm speaking about Maraviroc (aka Selzentry). So hwo does it act? These agents target entry of HIV into host cells, and the lead compounds in this class are maraviroc and vicriviroc, both of which are in phase 3 study.

Sadly, what all I was able to gather. We'll hear more soon, I hope.

Forbes announced that Selzentry is approved for HIV.
As you probably know by now, Selzentry (aka maraviroc) is oral medication to fight the HIV - in other words, to treat the virus that causes AIDS.
Ion Monday, U.S. Food and Drug Administration has apparoved Selzentry.

Selzentry blocks viral entry into disease-fighting white blood cells. Futher on, it reduces viral load and increases T-cell counts in people who are already being treated for certain strains of HIV.

Selzentry is the first in a new class of oral HIV medicines in more than 10 years. So-called CCR5 antagonists are designed to stop the virus outside the surface of cells before it enters, rather than fighting the virus inside as do other oral HIV medicines.

Interesting fact is, Selzentry was granted accelerated approval - this means that Selzentry appear to provide a significant therapeutic benefit over existing drugs for serious or life-threatening diseases.

Look for Selzentry on store shelves around mid-September this year.
