<p>In the last decades, substantial progress has been made in content analysis, multimedia streaming, and human-centered computing to facilitate the development of large-scale multimedia systems. Together with the recent progress on semantic web, scalable machine learning, and multi-modal interaction, it is now possible to build a new generation multimedia applications that enable large-scale semantic representation, analysis, and delivery of multimedia data from heterogeneous data sources. However, there is still a long way to go for mature solutions of multimedia database systems that are capable of processing semantics-rich, large-volume multimedia data. It could be even more challenging if such systems are under stringent functional and non-functional (e.g., QoS) requirements.</p> <p>The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers in multimedia semantic computing and provide a forum for multidisciplinary research opportunities, with a focus on how to apply the semantic technologies to the acquisition, generation, transmission, storage, processing, and retrieval of large-scale multimedia information. <p>Lately it was getting more and more challenging to hear a song you want online. YouTube sorts out based on Geo-IP, samples in online stores get shorter if even there. <p>The NetBeans community acceptance survey has voted for thhe last NetBeans 6.7 RC to be stable enough to be shipped. While this sounds great there is one minor details I consider critical for the significance of the survey: Only 182 people responded. (re-engineneered from 144 people being 79%). If we go with common numbers in empirical research ~5 % of the population take part in survey like these and therefore I conclude that the size of the NetBeans community is around 3.600 people.</p> <p>NetBeans is actually having quite a a hard time with Eclipse pressing from open source and Idea pressing from commercial alternatives. Also the free IDEs of Microsoft&#8217;s .NET family affect the scene. <p>The workshop is collocated with the 4th International Conference on Semantic and Digital Media Technologies SAMT2009 in Graz, Austria &#8211; Dec 2-4, 2009.</p> <p>Ontology-based systems have been developed to structure content and support knowledge retrieval and management. Semantic multimedia data processing and indexing in ontology- based systems is usually done in several steps. One starts by enriching multimedia metadata with additional semantic information possibly obtained by methods for bridging the semantic gap. Then, in order to structure data, a localized and domain specific ontology becomes necessary since the data has to be interpreted domain-specifically. The annotations are stored in an ontology management system where they are kept for further processing. In this scope, Semantic Database Technologies are now applied to ensure reliable and secure access, efficient search, and effective storage and distribution for both multimedia metadata and data. Their services can be used to adapt multimedia to a given context based on multimedia metadata or even ontology information. Services automate cumbersome multimedia processing steps and enable ubiquitous intelligent adaptation. Both, database and automation support facilitate the ubiquitous use of multimedia in advanced applications.</p> <p>Topics of interest are how multimedia metadata standards and multimedia ontologies are mapped or integrated into databases, how multimedia query languages are built, and how semantic queries are optimized and processed. Moreover, we are interested how multimedia data services are conceived to ensure interoperability, how to improve security and reliability of access and storage of multimedia data and metadata. Adaptation of multimedia, semantic enrichment of multimedia and bridging of media breaks are typical examples of advanced multimedia database services.</p> <p>The workshop proceedings will be published as a volume at CEUR Workshop Proceedings. Selected papers will appear in a special issue of a journal.
