Past to Present for Good Governance (Series 1 of 3) on May 4-6, 2011 at the CSB

Hotel International Conference Center, Arellano Avenue cor. Estrada Street,

This seminar-workshop aims to: (1) Provide an introduction on how to start an
archives and introduce the principles, common practices and current
developments in archival arrangement and description; (2) Ensure the longevity
of the collection and sustainability of Archives; (3) Protect vital information
in time of disaster; (4) Know the advantages and understand the importance of
digitization in the Archives; and, (5) Ensure compliance with legal
requirements governing copyright, reproduction and access.
Seminar topics include: (1) Starting an Archives: Arrangement and
Description; (2) Managing an Archives: a Case Study; (3) Preservation of
Audio-Visual Materials: An Introduction; (4)Institutional Repositories :
Issues on Access and Confidentiality; (5) Preservation and Conservation of Print
Materials; (6) Preservation of Paintings and Other Museum Pieces; and
(7)Disaster Preparedness.

A seminar fee of Php 4,000.00 will be charged to the participants to cover
registration fee, meals, seminar kit, certificates, and archives/museum tour
(scheduled on the third day).

The organizers will be giving away more than 10 titles of Filipiniana materials
for free to the first 30 participants who will register on or before April 20,
2011.

April 4-6, 2011 Hands-on training on Archives and Records Management

Dear Colleagues,

The Rizal Library of the Ateneo de Manila University is conducting a hands-on training on Archives and Records Management on April 4-6, 2011 from 9 am to 5 pm at the Rizal Library Special Collections Building. The training aims to enable the participants to:

1. Learn through experience the difference and similarities about archives and records management;
2. Learn the basic preservation measures and reformatting options;
3. Acquire knowledge in selection, retention, and disposition of archival materials; and
4. Apply both trends and standards in archival and records management in your own organization.

The fee for the training program is PhP 3000 to cover the kit, 6 snacks, 3 lunches and other expenses. Checks may be made in the name of the Ateneo de Manila University.

The PLAI-Central Luzon Region Librarians Council in cooperation with the University of the Assumption, is scheduled to conduct a forum entitled “Ethics 2.0: Managing Ethics in the Library” on May 19, 2011, from eight thirty in the morning to twelve noon (8:30am-12:00nn) at the High School Audio Visual Room, University of the Assumption, City of San Fernando, Pampanga. Registration starts at 7:30am.

This activity aims to discuss the salient provisions of the Revised Librarians’ Code of Ethics (BFL Resolution No. 6, s. 2006) and pertinent issues affecting the profession.

The Society of Filipino Archivists will hold a Seminar-Workshop on Raising the Standards: Strategies in Record-Keeping on April 13-15, 2011 at Sarabia Manor Hotel and Convention Center, 101 General Luna St., Iloilo City. This is in response to the need of public and private institutions in record-keeping. It is our goal that after this training, the participants will be able to:

1. Understand the basic concepts of ISO 15489: International Standard on Records Management;
2. Know some stategies in record-keeping vis-a-vis current practices and standards; and,
3. Apply record-keeping principles and best practices to ensure that their respective records management programs are in accordance to generally accepted standards.

As no office could operate successfully without accurate and accessible records, we would like to enjoin you and your staff, archivists, records officers, administrative officers/staff, registrars, office clerks, librarians, museum archivists, secretaries and other professionals handling records involved in keeping and controlling records to attend this seminar-workshop. The practice of librarianship in the Philippines has undergone significant transformations that call for a clear and renewed understanding of how it is to be a library and information professional beyond the acquisition of a degree from a library school, passing the Licensure examination and securing registration from the
Professional Regulations Commission (PRC). Continuing professional education and development is every professional librarian’s responsibility and should be every library and librarians associations’ continuing thrust.

In this regard, The PLAI–National Capital Region Librarians’ Council invites all the member of the profession to attend a Lecture-forum on the theme “Becoming” a Library and Information Professional: requirements for continuing education and development of librarians.”

This Lecture-Forum aims to:

1). Provide a venue for the discussion and reiteration of the importance of continuing education and development of practicing librarians and information professionals;
2). Discuss the role of professional associations in providing for the continuing education and development of their members, and
3). Re-introduce the Philippine Librarians Association, Inc. as the PRC Accredited Professional Association (APO) of registered librarians in the country.

We have invited Hon. Corazon M. Nera, Chair of the BFL as our Resource
Speaker.

The Philippine Association of Academic/Research Librarians Inc. (Every Librarian’s Association) is pleased to invite you to a one-day Seminar on the theme: Revitalized Library Networking: PAARLNet at the Frontline to be held at the Epifanio de los Santos Auditorium, The National Library, T.M. Kalaw, Manila on November 25, 2010. Registration starts at 7:00 a.m.

This Seminar is focused on the following objectives:

1. To provide a venue for the meeting and fellowship of PAARL Institutional members and representatives;
2. To review and re-analyze requirements and benefits of PAARL Institutional Membership;
3. To propose for revised networking policies among PAARL institutional members including those that concern cooperative collection development and management

There is no registration fee for all the members of PAARL, Inc. who will be attending the said Association’s activity. There will be free snacks and
certificates will be distributed. For non-members, a seminar fee of P500.00 will
be assessed to cover snacks, handouts, and certificates.

The University of Santo Tomas (USTLSAA) cordially invites you to a forum on "Coaching and Mentoring: Guide to Motivate Staff in Achieving High-Standard Performance" to be held on November 12, 2010 at Audio-Visual Room, 3rd Floor, Dentistry Building of National University, 551 M.F. Jhocson St., Sampaloc, Manila.

At the end of the forum, participants are expected to:

1. Understand the concept of coaching and mentoring.
2. Appreciate the difference between coaching and mentoring.
3. Recognize the attributes of an effective coach and mentor.
4. Stimulate individuals to higher level performance.
5. Apply coaching/mentoring skills in real-life workplace situations.

The Philippine Librarians Association, Inc. – Ilocos Region Librarians Council (PLAI-IRLC) will have a forum on “Establishing Library Linkages and Resource Sharing in Region I” and a general assembly on October 22, 2010 (Friday) at Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University-Open University System (DMMMSU-MLUC), City of San Fernando, La Union.

The objectives of the forum are the following:
1. To establish inter-relationship among different types of libraries in Region I;
2. To focus on several aspects of networking and resource sharing among libraries;
3. To formulate guidelines for practical implementation of networking and resources sharing among libraries; and
4. To establish mutual consent and written agreements among the libraries on what they wish to share among themselves.

Expected participants are librarians, information specialists, teacher-librarians and other information / library personnel. A forum fee of three hundred pesos (Php 300.00) shall be charged to each participant to defray cost for forum materials, lunch, snacks and certificates, and another three hundred pesos (Php 300.00) for the membership fee renewal for registered librarians.

November 16-18, 2010 "Paper Conservation & Preservation with Observation Tour of Selected Archival Institutions”

Dear Colleagues and Friends:

The Association of Special Libraries of the Philippines (ASLP), Inc. in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Philippinen and the Economic & Financial Learning Center (EFLC) of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) will conduct a three-day seminar on "Paper Conservation & Preservation with Observation Tour of Selected Archival Institutions” on November 16-18, 2010 at the EFLC Audio-Visual Room, BSP, Manila.

The seminar aimed to:

 Provide venue for better understanding on how to conserve, restore and preserve print materials;
 Impart new learning on methods and techniques concerning archival works;
 Better appreciate conservation & preservation through observation and hands-on experience of methods and works involved in selected archival institutions;
 Exchange ideas among participants to institutionalize conservation & preservation of important documents and rare collection in the Philippines; and
 Prepare participants for readiness in cases of emergencies and disasters.

Librarians, library & museum administrators, archivists, conservators, record officers, teachers and students of Library & Information Science, and other information specialists are invited to attend the said seminar.

Seminar fee is P2, 500.00 only. This includes kits, handouts, certificates and meals except lunch during the tour.

Kalaw St., Ermita, Manila.

The objectives are: to create and sustain an environment of sharing and talking about books of enduring value; even reaffirming favorable insights and hindsights about those which have already been shared and talked about; to initiate and continue a climate of discussion where writers / authors and readers analyze their crafts and those of others; to develop and maintain an atmosphere of healthy desirable criticism, interpretation and assessment among avid readers; and, to instill and promote an intellectual ambiance to stimulate and encourage the Filipino to read and write as he/she continues to strongly support Philippine books and Filipiniana materials.

A registration fee of Php 300.00 will be charged to the professional participant and Php 100.00 to the student participant to cover forum kit, snacks and certificate of participation. Payment should all be in the form of cash.
