Residents living in senior housing in Pennsylvania might be visited by an unusual guest during the month of November.

Steve Gurney is a 44-year-old entrepreneur who will be staying in a retirement home near Logan Circle in Philadelphia on November 18. The purpose of Gurney's visit will be to conduct market research in the eldercare industry.

Company ready to manufacture eldercare robots

A company that has been developing eldercare robots recently announced that it might soon be able to manufacture them at a rate of 1,000 per month.

GeckoSystems told attendees at the Mobile Robots in Motion conference on November 4 and 5 that it expects to be able to build 1,000 machines per month within the next half-year.

"For the last several years, the U.S. eldercare crisis is commonly portrayed as 'not happening' until the baby boomers reach the age of great reliance on their children and younger family members," said Martin Spencer, the company's CEO.

Technology is developing more quickly than ever before and the progress that is taking place could have a positive impact on retirement living.

The Chicago Sun-Times recently published a story that covered an exposition held by the American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging. The event featured the Idea House, which contained technology and innovations that were designed to help seniors remain independent.

An assisted living and Alzheimer's care service provider recently launched a website that offers seniors the opportunity to go online and ask experts questions pertaining to eldercare for free.

Ask the Expert also allows individuals who are looking after older persons to take advantage of its services. Dr Vicki Rackner is an expert in doctor-patient relations and caregiver stress and will answer questions posed on the site within 24 hours of their posting.

"Caring for a loved one can be an incredibly rewarding experience, though it can also be an extremely challenging task without qualified resources to help guide your decision making," said Granger Cobb, the president of the service provider.

Artist finds inspiration at retirement living community

A woman in the state of Washington has combined her two passions and found the inspiration to do so in a senior housing facility.

Nannette Pawlowski is a caregiver and artist in Vashon whose profession and favorite pastime seem to have a positive effect on each other, according to the Vashon-Maury Island Beachcomber. Pawlowski recently decorated the Vashon Community Care Center with her drawings and quilts, some of which were inspired by the facility's residents.

"I love helping one person at a time, and hearing their stories," the artist told the news source.

Shirley Boardman lives at the center and her husband, who passed away, is the subject of one of Pawlowski's fiber art pieces, reports the publication.

Older persons in Edinburgh must pay tiny taxes

Everyone in Scotland is required to pay their taxes, older persons included, and Doris Nelson can attest to that.

Nelson is a grandmother who recently received a series of tax demands from Edinburgh City Council, according to the Deadline Press and Picture Agency. Normally, tax demands aren't funny, but Nelson's case is an exception because hers were for a single penny.

"I couldn't believe it," she told the agency.

Older persons and other UK residents who are diagnosed with a chronic or long-term illness such as diabetes or cancer will be subject to closer supervision and assessment for development of depression.

The National Institute for Healthcare and Clinical Excellence issued new guidelines recently about the diagnosis and treatment of the mental condition, citing statistics showing those with chronic illnesses develop depression at a rate much higher than the rest of the population, reports the Guardian.

Bank protects senior housing

A major American bank is doing what it can to protect senior housing and keep the elderly in their homes.

Pedro Garcia had been living in his California home for nearly 40 years when his mortgage lender foreclosed on the loan, according to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). But Garcia is still living there today, and he is paying next to nothing to stay.

Garcia owed the bank approximately $490,000, according to the news source.
