Next month, 80-year-old Ellen Halliday will join 350 cyclists as they pedal across parts of the pacific Northwest for Ride Idaho, an event that will raise money for breast cancer research. Although that seems like a difficult journey for an octogenarian, AARP.com reports that she's up to the challenge. "I don't have the attitude of an old lady. I don't think like an old person. I will never be old," Halliday told the news source. Halliday will be the oldest woman in the group, whose average age is 55.

Biology professor finds potential Alzheimer's treatment

An MIT biology professor may have found a new breakthrough in the quest to locate better treatment for Alzheimer's disease. The Boston Globe reports that Leonard Guarente and a team of researchers discovered that increasing the amount of a protein called SIRT1 can treat the mental illness in mice. "Our work on developing compounds that can activate SIRT1 hopefully will be useful in treating Alzheimer's and other neurodegenerative disorders," Guarente told the news provider.

Many people refer to golf as a lifelong game, and 92-year-old Pueblo, Colorado, resident Lee Pollard is living proof. The Pueblo Chieftain reports that Pollard began playing the game as a way to spend time with her husband, and has at it - 23 years after he passed away. "I was near 60 when I played for the first time. My husband needed a golf partner and it sounded like something fun that I wanted to learn how to do," she told the news source. Pollard joined an 18-hole women's league and organized the first women's group at Walking Stick Golf Course in 1995.

The number of senior citizens in Kansas that are choosing to move in to assisted living communities is rising, according to KWCH12. The news source reports that the Central Plains Area Agency on Aging estimates that the number of people over the age of 60 in Wichita, Kansas is expected to grow by as much as 40 percent, and that the city is beginning to take steps to build more retirement communities. "I think builders and providers are starting to see the need for more housing options," Central Plain Area Agency on Aging's Annette Graham told the news provider.

More schooling may slow down Alzheimer's disease

Scientists announced this week that extra education could be a factor in slowing down mental diseases such as Alzheimer's. Reuters reports that people who attend a university or college may be less affected by brain changes than by those who do not go on to higher education. "More education is not associated with any differences in the damage to the brain, but people with higher education can cope with that damage better," researcher Hanna Kaege told the news source. Kaege added that more education often leads to greater psychological strength, which allows individuals to find ways to overcome problems associated with dementia and other mental maladies.

An Arizona State University engineering professor joined a group of cyclists this weekend, all of whom began to bike hundreds of miles in an effort to raise awareness and money for Alzheimer's disease. This year is shaping up to be one of the hottest on record and the oppressive heat can put some elderly people in danger. According to bctv.com, residents in Berks County, Pennsylvania, may have a respite from the rising temperatures as local senior centers are opening their doors to everyone. "Our concern is that there are older adults who, despite not having air conditioning in their homes, stay there instead of venturing out to places such as our senior centers where they can cool off," LuAnn Oatman, president and CEO of Berks Encore told the news source. Whether or not one is a member of the retirement living community, they can still use Berks County senior centers and Oatman encourages anybody over 55 who is suffering from the heat to do so.
