Gout is one of the oldest medical conditions in the history of medicine. Approximately, six million Americans are affected by gout at some point in their lives. Gout is especially prevalent in middle age men. Gout is a painful type of arthritis that causes severe inflammation of the joints, especially in the big toe. An episode of gout will cause extremely debilitating pain and suffering. This painful type of arthritis has been extensively studied since the ancient times. Learning to cope with gout requires having the knowledge on what causes gout, and preventing future gout attack. Frequent gout attacks are prevented by taking the right medicine and altering your lifestyle and diet to avoid future outbreaks.

What is gout?

Gout is a hereditary disease that is caused by an excess of uric acid that builds up in the fluids of the joints. Uric acid is a useful tool in getting rid of waste in the digestive system. Uric acid is transported as waste through the kidneys when we urinate. When the flow of uric acid is blocked, it builds up in the bloodstream, causing an attack of gout to occur. The accumulation of uric acid causes crystals to be deposited in and around the joints. This deposit of crystals can lead to an impairment of the function of the kidneys, and can cause kidney stones.

What causes gout?

Heredity is an important factor in having a predisposition to getting gout. Being overweight increases the risk of getting gout due to the potential of overweight people having an excess of uric acid in the body. A person who drinks too much alcohol increases the risk of developing hyperuricemia, resulting in blocking the elimination of uric acid from the body. Eating food that has a high level of purines can lead to a gout attack. High amounts of purines in the body produce uric acid that causes crystals to accumulate in the joints. This triggers a gout attack complete with severe pain and inflammation.

Signs and symptoms of gout

The symptom of gout appears when there is an accumulation of uric acid in the body. The sign that a gout attack is occurring is a sudden intense pain which occurs without any warning, usually late at night. This severe pain occurs in joints like the feet, knees, hands, ankles, fingers and wrist, but gout is especially prevalent in the big toe. The symptoms of gout include a burning and painful swelling of the joints, which is characterized by red and tender joints. The medical term for gout that occurs in the big toe is Podagra. The onset of a gout attack usually occurs late at night because the temperature of the body is lower at night leaving the body susceptible to a gout attack. Besides the excruciating pain, a person suffering from gout can have symptoms of fever, chills and extreme fatigue. An episode of gout usually subsides within a week or two if not treated. Gout can go into remission and not appear again for months or years. Repeated episodes of gout can cause some loss of mobility and subsequent damage to the joints. Psedogout is a form of arthritis that is often confused with gout, but Pseudogout usually affects the knees.

Prevention and treatment of gout

You can prevent subsequent bouts of gout by changing your lifestyle and your diet. Go on a diet and lose weight if you are overweight. Monitor your blood pressure, drink plenty of fluids and limit your consumption of alcohol. Avoid foods that are rich in purines, such as certain kinds of meat, to avoid an excess of uric acid in your body. Many people have found that eating papaya is helpful in treating gout symptoms. Take the proper medicine to treat gout and to prevent gout from returning. NSAIDS are used to treat the symptoms and pain of a gout attack. Colchicine lowers the amount of uric acid in the body, and it is used to cure flare-ups of gout and to prevent future attacks. Other drugs like Allopurinol and Probenecid are used specifically to prevent repeated attacks of gout.

The cardiovascular system pumps blood through the body to provide fuel for cellular functions and remove waste. Hypertension or high blood pressure is a problem in this supply system that leads to problems in other systems. In fact, high blood pressure is called the silent killer because it usually has no symptoms itself. Episodes of extreme hypertension can cause headache, nausea, blurred vision or chest pain. More often hypertension symptoms are the result of damage to other organs in the body that are especially sensitive to a defect in blood supply. Severe damage can result in heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure. By monitoring blood pressure regularly through a simple procedure, a set of numbers can reveal the onset of HBP before serious damage occurs. Anyone can check their blood pressure by using the blood pressure cuff (sphygmomanometer) at home or at the pharmacy. Etiology is not fully understood. It may be genetic and is often associated with poor diet and physical inactivity. HBP can be managed with life style changes and medication.

Blood Pressure Basics

When the ventricle of the heart pushes blood out into the arteries, this is called systole. The pressure in the arteries crests. The upper figure in a blood pressure reading is called systolic because it reflects this high water mark. The lower figure signals the pressure of blood in the vessels during the pause between contractions and is the diastolic pressure. Individuals vary, and normal blood pressure changes because with physiological function, but a reading of 120/80 is an effective indicator of a healthy cardiovascular system. Anything higher is hypertension. Anything lower is hypotension. Both figures are important. 140/90 is the clinical marker for high blood pressure. A range of 120-139/80-89 alerts your doctor that you are prehypertensive. Self-care requires becoming more physically active and eating healthier food. Weight loss is the most obvious result, but exercise and an improved diet can also decrease anxiety and improve the quality of sleep. Changes in diet start with decreased salt and fat intake. Salt attracts fluid, and decreasing salt supports appropriate fluid levels in the body. Weight alone is not an effective guide to your nutritional status. Ensuring that you receive adequate nutrients requires understanding the result of your food choices. Use of vitamins and supplements can also be helpful if you make informed choices. Dancing and walking are activities that don’t require a gym membership and increase social contact which itself has a positive effect on your general level of health. Using salt substitutes, taking the stairs, and parking your car at the far end of the lot are simple ways to take care of yourself. Massage, meditation, yoga, and other relaxation techniques also lower blood pressure. Risk factors for HBP include smoking, alcohol abuse, and use of oral contraceptives.

Being able to monitor your daily blood pressure reading can be very helpful to your physician and could even save your life. Click here to find a blood pressure monitor that’s right for you!

Medications function by addressing the mechanics. Either an increase in blood volume or a decrease in arterial diameter can cause HBP. Some medications, such as Lasix, are diuretics and decrease blood volume by increasing urine production and eliminating sodium. Some medications target the diameter of the blood vessels via different mechanisms. These include direct vasodilators which relax the smooth muscle of the artery and allow it to widen, decreasing the force required to push blood through. Beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors, ARBs, and CCBs are all used to intervene in specific mechanism of the systems that regulate cardiovascular function. Each medication has a set of potential side effects as a result of its mechanism of operation. Treatment frequently involves the use of two or more medications. Your physician uses your medical history to help determine what combination is most effective for your unique requirements.

Experiencing pain during the night is a common complain of people who are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. By preventing people from sleeping, this contributes to the fatigue already experienced by people with this disorder. Thankfully, there are things that you can do to help reduce the pain that you feel during the night if you are suffering from this condition.

Before You Go to Sleep

Before you go to sleep, there are a few things that you can do to prepare yourself. A hot or a cold pack can help reduce stiffness, which is a major contributing factor. If your muscles and joints are aching, than a hot pack is probably best. If, on the other hand, you are experiencing swelling, a cold pack is probably a better choice.

Self massage is another option that can be extraordinarily helpful. If you have a hand held massager this can do a lot to help reduce pain and to help you relax, both of which will help you get to sleep easier. The same is true for massage chairs and massage pads.

If possible, a jacuzzi or water jets in the bath can do a lot to aid you in preparing for sleep. If this is not possible, a hot bath can still do a great deal to help relax your joints.

There are several over the counter drugs that you can take to help you with the pain as well. Ibuprofen, acetaminophen, and asprin are helpful for many people because they reduce pain and cause swelling to drop. Holistic options are available as well, such as creams made with chili peppers that provide warmth in a way that is similar to a hot pad.

Rheumatoid Arthritis and Bed Positioning

Bed positioning is extremely important. The way that you choose to sleep can take a great deal of stress off of your joints. An important part of this is what you do with your pillow. If you are laying on your back, the pillow should provide full support for your head, neck, and shoulders. This means that it should be lower than if you were to sleep on your side. You should also place one or two pillows underneath your knees, as this further takes strain off of your back.

When you sleep on your side, you should use the pillow to keep your spine and neck straight. You should aim to keep your weight distributed as evenly as possible so that there is no pressure on your joints. In order to provide yourself with additional support, you may want to use a small pillow or a towel to place under your waist as a wedge pillow. This will also help to keep your spin straight and take unnecessary pressure off of your body.

If you sleep on your stomach, your pillow should either be very flat, or you should rest your head directly on the mattress. If you do not, this will put unnecessary stress on your neck as your head is turned to the side at an unnatural angle. It is also a good idea to place a pillow under your stomach if you sleep in this position, since it helps you to keep your spine in a natural position.

There are pillows designed specifically for your preferred sleep position. To get the most comfortable sleep possible, it is a good idea to take advantage of this. In addition, if your mattress is too firm, you can cover it with a foam topper. Mattress warming pads can also take off a great deal of the pain. Don’t skimp on prices when your sleep is at stake.

You may experience a dull or severe pain, with a feeling of fullness in the pit of the stomach. A sour liquid usually moves into the mouth. Dizziness, bloating and headache may also be present. There are many heartburn remedies on the market today which are available, both over the counter and by prescription, that are effective. But they usually carry warning labels about many, possibly dangerous, side effects. There are, however, numerous other treatment choices using natural remedies to heal gerd which you may want to try first.

Natural Treatments for GERD

One of the easiest methods of GERD or Acid Reflux treatment is to make some simple dietary changes. There are certain foods that can cause the excessive burping that is associated with heartburn. Avoidance of the offending substances or activities, which increase stomach acid, is always a good plan. Alcohol, smoking, eating onions, garlic, tomato sauce and spicy foods can all lead to overactive salivary glands and a reduced ability to swallow the saliva that naturally builds in your mouth. Other known irritants are chocolate, coffee, fried foods and citrus fruits. Any of these food items can trigger the acid regurgitation, which can cause a sore throat and sometimes hoarseness of the voice, due to the harsh acid flowing upwards through the esophageal tract into the mouth. Strangulation may occur, especially if you are lying down. Any activity that necessitates bending over also aggravates this tendency. If you are experiencing indigestion type symptoms such as excessive burping, burning pain in the chest or acid regurgitation, first loosen any clothing around your stomach and waistline. This reduces the pressure and provides some immediate relief. Many people find that drinking a glass of water or cold, fat free milk every couple of hours is beneficial and reduces the strength of the offending acid. Body position is extremely important in minimizing the discomfort. Sit up straight, stand up or walk around. Do not lie down for at least two hours after eating and avoid any bedtime snacking. Because symptoms usually increase when in a prone position, a wedge pillow is especially helpful when sleeping. The wedge pillow is specially designed for people who suffer from sleeping disorders due to acid reflux. By elevating the head and upper body, the wedge pillow naturally impedes the flow of excess acid from backing up into the esophageal tract into the mouth.

Herbal remedies

Natural herbal remedies have been in use for centuries and for good reason. Research has proven that many herbs have been found to be effective in stopping excess acid from occurring. For instance, lemon balm, when used alone, tends to produce a calming effect on the digestive tract. When mixed with other herbs, such as chamomile or meadowsweet, it produces an excellent anti-inflammatory. Peppermint is often used successfully to settle a nervous stomach. Try adding a bit of cumin to a glass of water or drink a mixture of honey and ginger root extract after each meal. Many sufferers find that mixing a little apple cider vinegar with a glass of water and drinking it several times a day provides relief. A session with a good herbalist can help you determine the correct herbals along with the proper dosage recommended for your symptoms.

Unfortunately, symptoms of gerd mirror symptoms of many other diseases of the heart, kidneys or lungs. Thorough testing needs to be done to rule out any other underlying causes. You should be professionally diagnosed prior to trying any remedies to be certain that you are treating the correct illness. GERD is not only extremely uncomfortable and painful, but, if not treated successfully, it can also lead to more serious complications of the digestive tract. Not all of these natural cures will work for everyone. If you choose to try one or more of the natural alternatives to heal gerd, be sure to seek your physician’s advice. Your physician knows your medical history and any risk factors you may have, and is in the best possible position to make recommendations.

When it comes to senior mobility, there are typically two options: a rolling walker, and a transport chair, both of which are very different and offer a great mode of mobility for seniors and those caring for seniors. Not only can these devices be perfect for helping a senior regain mobility, but they also provide caregivers with a better way to assist seniors in their care. Well, now, there is a combination of the two mobility devices, know as a transport rollator. The Airgo Navigator Rollator and Transport Chair Combo, which is a combination roller and wheelchair, offering optimal mobility and assistance measures for seniors that are no longer able to walk on their own but still want the active lifestyle.

What is a Rollator?

When looking for high quality mobility devices, a rollator is an excellent option, offering one of the most flexible and durable walking rollers on the market for seniors with mobility disadvantages. With easy transport and storage capabilities, as well as a high life capacity, seniors and their helpers can use these devices to reestablish a healthy and active lifestyle, even when mobility is no longer independent. Having one of these devices will greatly increase the senior’s ability to engage in activities outdoors or indoors, with better handling for easier mobility.

What is a Transport Chair?

There are times when a rolling walker is not an option, whether there is a health issue or the activity is too strenuous for those with mobility issues. For this reason, a transport chair, or wheelchair, is an optimal device to get the senior a comfortable spot in the event, whether on a large or small scale level. Even with simple household tasks or outdoors tasks, the chair can offer a comfortable and efficient method of getting around, providing care givers with a great way to assist their clients with mobility through easy attendant features and convenience.

The Transport Rollator

Combining the rollator and the transport chair into one transport rollator is the best option. Devices such as the Airgo Navigator offer a combo that gives supreme mobility, whether the activity calls for the walker or the chair. This provides the best option for seniors that engage in diverse activities throughout the day, and attendants that are helping seniors to get through a long day. The senior is able to take advantage of the rolling walker for optimal exercise, retiring to the chair when tired or feeling strained. This is the best way to promote a healthy lifestyle, while allowing seniors to remain active and attendants to manage their needs more efficiently.

Why Get the Combination?

Getting a combination transport rollator is the best way to support seniors with active lifestyles that may change needs during an activity or a day out of the home. Instead of consuming time with various devices, the product combines the two in order to ensure the most space saving solution for senior mobility. There are many seniors that are able to get around much better thanks to the this device’s flexibility since they can now carry both the walking and sitting option wherever they go, without needing more than one device.

Getting a combination device is a good idea if you want to eliminate the need for two mobility devices for yourself or a senior you are caring for. Many times, the senior has to choose whether they would like to walk or sit during the day, leaving one of the options behind as they leave home. With the combination of the two devices, they are now able to make the choice whenever it is best, whether they are in the middle of an activity or ready to go home.

Rollator walkers help people regain some mobility and independence, without being as cumbersome as traditional walkers. Much like a regular walker, a Rollator has handles and four legs, however, it is a walker with wheels. Additionally, the device will usually come with a plastic or padded seat and will mostly likely have a basket attached to the frame at some point.

In order to use a Rollator Walker, the first step is to make sure that it is the proper fit. Items to consider when buying the rolling walker is the height, weight, and needs of the person who will use the equipment. Also, it is important to note what type of environment in which the apparatus is most likely to be used. It may make a difference in the type of equipment chosen as to whether the user walks outside or resides in a home with hardwood floors or carpets. Additionally, individual style can be taken into account by choosing a color such as red, black, or blue. After the equipment is purchased, the user can add more personal touches.

A trip to the local medical supply store can result in a “test-drive” of the Rollator, which will help determine which of the rolling walkers fit best. When trying out the apparatus, the user should not only try to walk, but should also sit on the seat. Seats will come with various levels of padding and will come in different sizes. While the seats are intended to be used for short rest periods and not extended sitting, the seat should be comfortable for the user. If a visit to a store is not possible then by visiting a trusted online rollator store you can usually find all the information you need and get a lower price.

Rolling walkers that are designed to fold up and fit inside of a car will be a tremendous advantage. This is a benefit that makes traveling with it much easier. As such, before buying the equipment, try folding it up. This should be an easy process. Additionally, lift the device and check its weight. It should not be too heavy for a person to easily place into a vehicle.

A walker with wheels may cost upwards of $250, depending on which one is chosen. It is possible that the user’s doctor will write a prescription for a mobility aid. This would enable the user to get insurance coverage to help pay for the equipment. Further, Medicare will pay for certain devices, if the user has a prescription. It should be noted that Medicare will not pay for a padded seat, so one may have to inquire as to where to buy additional padding.

Using Your Rollator Walker

Once the apparatus has been purchased and is ready to be used, it should be placed into an upright position with the seat flat and the wheels on the ground. Every walker with wheels will have brakes on it which are located on the handles. Before beginning to use the equipment, the brakes should be locked. When the brakes are properly locked, there will be a clicking or snapping noise. When the brakes are in the locked position, it is safe to sit on the seat or to stay in a stationary position.

When the user is ready to walk, he or she should place both feet in the middle of the frame. The user’s feet should be side by side and his or her hands should be holding onto the handles. The brakes can be unlocked by squeezing the handles until you hear the same clicking or snapping noise heard when the brakes were locked. The user should take moderate steps and push the walker at the same time. The motion is similar to pushing a shopping cart.

If the user is ready to sit, the apparatus should be placed in a locked position. If the device will not move when pushed, then it is locked and therefore, it is safe to sit down. The device will not be able to be unlocked from a sitting position. This means that once the user is ready to walk, he or she will need to stand up and repeat the aforementioned steps.

With The Bed Wedge Pillow & Positional Therapy Peaceful sleep can be yours again!

Currently in the United States more than 80 million people are suffering from acid reflux. Many of them have turned to medication. This can be helpful but often has many unwanted side effects some being even worse than the original condition.

Fortunately there is a new form of treatment that is gaining in popularity to help ease the discomfort caused by acid reflux. It is called Positional Therapy. It is targeted to helping the patient during the night aiding them in sleeping which is usually the most uncomfortable and damaging time of the day for acid reflux sufferers.

How It Works

Positional Therapy is simply changing the sleeping position of the patient by the use of a simple and comfortable device know as a “Bed Wedge” or “Foam Slant” pillow. It simply keeps the body in a slightly elevated position so that gravity can help hold the stomach fluids where they belong, in the stomach and not in the esophagus. This one simple change can drastically help people with acid reflux and as a bonus it also aids in relieving the symptoms of many breathing problems.

The Result

The result is a more restful healthy night of sleep without any drugs. The Bed wedge can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments.
