Nintendo DS as a ND calculator & simple remote control

I use my Nintendo DS lite to trigger my DSLR in bulb mode. I’m currently coding a ND calculator & simple remote control. On my German blog I already wrote about this opportunity.

For now I only have put all the things together and didn’t made anything look pretty.

Current state:

able to choose a metered TV

able to choose a ND filter

calculation of TV with filter

able to trigger the release button:

with the calculated (filter on) TV

as long as you push the button

locking the release button until you remove the lock

To do:

if the calculated TV is below the value that can be triggered it should show the TV setting you might set with the DSLR directly to get your shoot with the ND filter

ability to set a desired TV length to be triggered

saving and loading settings to file

build multilingual interface DE/EN and save preferences

split functionality into different parts (ND part, simple remote part, timed remote part)

finding an applications name

Features I’m thinking of to implement at a later stage:

add intervalometer functionality

… (anything else?)

OCC on camera © HDRlabs.com

Things I don’t know yet and things I’m thinking about if I need to implement these for any reason:

double shoot insurance

consider noise reduction work time

mirror lockup wait

walk away wait

wake up shot

And finally I’m looking for an easy solution to build nice sprites (until now I didn’t spend much time on this with Photoshop) as well as a nice interface backgroun.

Well what do you think? I know there are already several solutions out in the world and with Android and iOS there are also even more solutions on the way or already available and ready to go, but the more time I spend with my own coding and learning (and I’m just a beginner!) the more I love my own solution.

And if you are interested in connecting your DSLR with your Nintendo DS have a look at http://www.hdrlabs.com/occ/index.html

This year is photokina year!

On 18th September 2012, the world’s largest and most important ordering event for the international photography and imaging sector will once again open its doors in Cologne. Major brands – ranging from Canon, Epson and Leica to Panasonic, Fujifilm, Sigma and Lowepro – registered to take part in photokina already. Photokina’s organizers – Koelnmesse and the Photographic Industry Association – expect approximately 1,200 suppliers from more than 40 countries to attend the fair in 2012. More than 180,000 visitors from over 160 countries attended the World of Imaging in 2010.

Exhibition format in a modern architectonic ambience

Visual Gallery, Halle 1 © photokina

Exhibitions of impressive photography by established and emerging professional photographers will be the focus of even more attention at photokina 2012 – on the newly created Boulevard of Competitions. This attraction, which is replacing the Visual Gallery, will have a prominent location in the northern section of the Boulevard, where a top class installation of images from the leading competitions for professional photographers will be presented. All companies exhibiting at photokina 2012 that organize an international competition for professional photographers are eligible to take part.

“The Boulevard of Competitions will ensure that the exhibitions, some of which were displayed in the Visual Gallery, will attract even more attention on the part of visitors. And the modern architectural style of the northern section of the Boulevard will provide the perfect ambience for the images. This enables us to bring these examples of outstanding photography directly to the trade fair visitors,” says Markus Oster, Vice President Communication and Media at Koelnmesse GmbH. “And the placement in the northern section of the Boulevard is another advantage: The Boulevard is where there is the most visitor traffic, so the images are assured of receiving the attention they deserve.”

Trend topic: Mobile imaging

Another trend topic that photokina has been actively showcasing for several years is mobile imaging, which involves the taking of photographs with cell phones and smartphones. Thanks to the success of iPhones and similar products, the mobile imaging sector has greatly expanded to become an important segment of photography. photokina 2012 will focus on this topic in a special area where visitors will be able to experience mobile imaging in a fun and exciting way and try out as many applications as possible. At a related forum, visitors will be given exciting background information that will not only be of interest to end consumers but also show how the market can provide the specialist trade with a variety of opportunities for boosting turnover.

Cologne brings photography to life

Passage 2/3 © photokina

Needless to say, Cologne and the surrounding region will once again enthusiastically join in the imaging activities in September 2012. One of these will be “photokina: cologne takes photographs!”, which will be held next year for the third time. The unique platform it creates will extend the topic of photography far beyond the exhibition centre and into the city of Cologne. Numerous activities, including photo workshops, photo shoots, exhibitions and events focusing on special motifs will invite photo enthusiasts, amateur photographers, beginners and professionals to take out their cameras and examine the possibilities that photography has to offer.

Project from A to Z: Z like Zoo

Finally we reached the last theme at the Project from A to Z. This time we are looking for photos that were shot at the zoo. Therefore the last theme is called:

“Z” like “Zoo”

Starting today you will have time up to the 15th of May 2012. You are able to submit your photo(s) right away and you will need the hidden password: >Click here to show the password!<<span id="sh_35123570"style="display:none;" > before you can start your upload.

The rules are quite easy, you can use any photo either you shoot one or take one from your archives. The only thing you have to consider is that you are the owner of the photo and own the associated rights. With sending the photo you allow me to publish it here on Sensorgraphy.net and Sensorgrafie.de (which is the German counterpart to my web blog).

Project from A to Z: X & Y

Second to last theme at the Project from A to Z. For this theme and the letters “X” and “Y” we are looking for photos that show something that look like an X or an Y. Due to the fact that we are looking for two letters at the same time and the upcoming easter days, we spend a bit more time to get you prepared to find or shoot photos.

Starting today you will have time up to the 17th of April 2012. You are able to submit your photo(s) right away and you will need the hidden password: >Click here to show the password!<<span id="sh_945228325"style="display:none;" > before you can start your upload.

Sneak peak for the last theme to the project from A to Z is…

Z like “zoo” or anything you can find there

by Kathy Eccles

Take a virtual tour of the final resting place of the RMS Titanic and it is the everyday details – like the bathtub in the captain’s quarters or the cook’s pot in “Hell’s Kitchen”– that bring home the scope of this century-old tragedy. On April 14, 1912, the greatest ship of its time hit a fatal iceberg off Canada’s Newfoundland coast and 1,517 souls were lost at sea. A century later, the city of Halifax, Nova Scotia commemorates its role in the recovery effort.

This April 14, 2012, at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, you can immerse yourself in the unfolding fate of the Titanic revealed through the same wireless messages operators received in 1912; (see Titanic on Twitter). From April to October 2012, the museum features Cable Ships: Connecting Halifax to Titanic and the World, which recounts the personal stories of crew members from the Halifax-based cable ships involved in the recovery of bodies from the site. The museum also features a photographic exhibit, An Earnest Price: 150 Grave Stories, showcasing the grave markers of the 150 victims buried in Halifax cemeteries.

Graveyard to the unknown child (© CTC)

In the museum’s permanent exhibit, see one of the world’s only intact Titanic deck chairs and a new diorama offering a “lifeboat view” of the mighty ship’s last moments. The Halifax Regional Municipality publishes an online “List of Titanic Victims Buried in Halifax” that is helpful background information for those planning a guided or self-guided tour of Fairview Lawn Cemetery, where 121 of the victims are buried and visitors can view the marker “to the unknown child,” (since identified as 19-month-old Sidney Goodwin). Another 19 individuals were laid to rest at Mount Olivet Cemetery and 10 at the Baron de Hirsch Cemetery, open by appointment only.
From May through August, you can book a guided tour of the Bedford Institute of Oceanography, which includes a model of the Titanic as it looks today resting on the ocean floor.

Titanicmet its fate 603 km (375 miles) off the coast of Cape Race, Newfoundland and the province is marking its Titanic connections with a series of events created by Wildland Tours, including a dramatic recreation of the distress call and other ship-to-shore communications between vessels over the ship’s grave site. “My God, Gray, the Titanic has struck a berg” were the words memorialized by Cape Race wireless operator Jack Goodwin in 1912 and broadcast to the world. The Cape Race Receiving Titanic Commemoration, on April 14 &15, includes a 1912-themed on-shore meal and a minute-by-minute recreation of the events at sea 100 years ago.

In historic St. John’s, you can capture the feeling of grandeur from the Titanic’s era at Ryan Mansion, whose sweeping custom-designed grand staircase was built during the same time (1909 to 1911) and by the same Irish craftsmen who built the grand staircase for the luxury liner. The inn’s Titanic Dinners offer the six-course opulence of the actual last menu served on the ship, using china accurately replicated from the Titanic’s first class dining saloon.

Project from A to Z: W like “water”

Next stage at the Project from A to Z – we reached the letter “W” and this time we are looking forward to your photo showing “W” like

“water”

You have two weeks from now to send your theme photo that is “water” related. You are able to submit your photo(s) until the 20th of March 2012. You will need the hidden password: >Click here to show the password!<<span id="sh_369542002"style="display:none;" > before you can upload your content.

The rules are quite easy, you can use any photo either you shoot one or take one from your archives. The only thing you have to consider is that you are the owner of the photo and the associated rights. With sending the photo you allow me to publish it here on Sensorgraphy.net and Sensorgrafie.de (which is the German counterpart to my web blog).

Sneak peak - the upcoming themes are…

X & Y anything that looks like an “X” or like an “Y”
Z like at the “zoo”
