Karim Rashid recently designed the new Majik Cafe in Belgrade, Serbia enamoring it with his trademark ‘digipop’ look that is accented with an amalgam of RG LED panels that change the color and mood of the place throughout the day.
Chair couture – the very name bears connotations of sitting pretty or languorously laying atop luxe designs. Margaret Elman has knack for reupholstering French antique furniture by giving them a new lease of life. She creates one-of-a kind, exceptionally vibrant pieces by incorporating audacious prints in recycled polyester and organic cotton. Every fabric has a specific use for every piece of vintage furniture from classical chaise lounges to ornate chairs. The prints range from serene aquatic ripples, sepia-toned dandelion stalks and even lush, verdant patch of grass. For that consummate experience of sitting on a grassy knoll indoors, you might want to commission bergères from Elman.

Who needs hideous scaffolding coverage when there’s faux-foliage from Camouflage? The original objective has diversified with Camouflage now used in indoors and stage-backdrops. Designed by Iikka Airas and Markus Wikar, Camouflage is created from sheets of tarpaulin and the installation is devised to incorporate a three-dimensional effect once it’s hanged. In a city with a proliferation of construction cranes and towering edifices, Dubai can certainly do with this scaffolding makeover. Additionally, I can’t think of a better way to eliminate unsightly advertising rife on the half-constructed, let alone finished, structures.

Kirsten Hassenfed’s Dans La Lune is very much a delightful jaunt across magical realms. Lush with elaborate details yet stark in its colour scheme, this installation is simply ethereal. Abound are concatenation of stars ensconced in domes, miniature gazebos, winsome cameos aglow, translucent feminine tchotches and illuminated orbs all adorned with trimmings, crystals, curlicues and scalloped edges. Everything is handmade with extraordinary finesse from paper and intricately layered, embellished and garlanded. The entire tableau is a captivating wonderland.

Now, Moschino have breezed into the world of interiors with their definitive epic-chic lamps: the bag, the boot and, my favourite, the bustier.
Ah, slot this one under “Endlessly Amusing Time-Killer”. Paper Critters is an online creation tool for creating and sharing boxy digital toys. With an easy drag-and-drop editor together with various stencils and drawing tools, you can enhance the features of your toy (wacky eyebrows? yes please). You can even personalize the critter by uploading one of your own images (or sworn foes). Once completed, the critters can be shared by emailing it across or simply sending the permalink as well as adding it to a blog or website.

All creatures can be viewed in The Colony and, what’s more, you can customize creatures that already exist and give it your own spin without affecting the original. All creatures have a rating feature: Cute/Evil; Loyal or Rebel.

Tjep was asked by the ROC professional training school in Apeldoorn in the Netherlands to design the new reception area of the economics department.

In return, they created a space that represented the complexity and diversity of economical processes in modern society: A conference room in the shape of a factory, the origin of industrial goods; A reception desk formed by abstracted crate shapes, representing transportation; a meeting table in the shape of a five meter long key, representing real-estate but also a world of opportunities for graduated students; Stools as calculator buttons, numbers being the language of economics; A table football game with it’s scaled down stadium, representing the economics of leisure; And finally, at the center of the floor design we find a student with a huge heart, a little reminder that the heart should be the starting point of economic decisions.

Once upon a time Italian designer Alessandro Mendini created a special vase for Alessi. In order to make it even more special, Alessi gathered an army of hundred artists and designers to customize the vase. Each custom design was replicated on a hundred vases thus creating a collection of ten thousand limited edition vases that were auctioned off. This was in 1989. On November 1st this year, they’ll be doing their fifteen event in San Francisco. Unfortunately, We can’t make it but you can.

To attend, please RSVP no later than October 25, 2007 to 212-353-1383 or RSVP15@bdeonline.biz. Just Remember 10% of the night’s proceeds will benefit Creativity Explored, a nonprofit visual arts center where artists with developmental disabilities create, exhibit, and sell art.

Employing stringent simplification by using only cardboard and glue, Chris Gilmour’s creations provoke an enhanced appreciation of everyday objects. Gilmour’s interpretations of familiar objects using only a single material – cardboard – add a certain quixotic appeal and provoke us to perceive these commonplace objects in a distinct conceptual light.

A bit squeamish about tucking into a condiment-laden canapé or perhaps that bowl of nuts everyone dips their fingers into? Fear not, this set of miniature cutlery comprising a fork, knife and spoon should erase your intense hygienic fears. The economic size means you can always be prepared by tucking this set into your pocket or clutch. Just make sure to keep it away from the prying fingers of toddlers.

Despite their design, a crossover between improvised trash-bin liners and mutated bonnets, the Office Collar is the perfect spatial isolators. Imbued with the pledge of seclusion, these are ideal to quickly strap on whenever you have a looming deadline or simply to deter irksome colleagues loitering near your elbow for some idle palaver. On the downside, obstructing peripheral vision is extremely detrimental to the industrious employee image as it impedes swift reach to those precious alt + tab keys.
