Although many of the guidelines may now be common practice, it’s great to see them all in one package. If your company doesn’t do in-house usability, this checklist is ideal for developers to use as part of their design and feature testing.

The 247 guidelines are broken out into 9 sections:

Home page usability
Task orientation
Navigation and IA
Forms and data entry
Trust and credibility
Writing and content quality
Page layout and visual design
Search usability
Help, feedback and error tolerance

As an added bonus, User Focus provides an option to download as an Excel doc!

Toronto based start-up Sysomos recently published an exhaustive report on Twitter usage based on an analysis of over 11 million user accounts. Some of their key findings:

72.5% of all users joining during the first five months of 2009.
85.3% of all Twitter users post less than one update/day
21% of users have never posted a Tweet
93.6% of users have less than 100 followers, while 92.4% follow less than 100 people.
5% of Twitter users account for 75% of all activity
New York has the most Twitters users, followed by Los Angeles, Toronto, San Francisco and Boston; while Detroit was the fast-growing city over the first five months of 2009
More than 50% of all updates are published using tools, mobile and Web-based, other than Twitter.com. TweetDeck is the most popular non-Twitter.com tool with 19.7% market share.
There are more women on Twitter (53%) than men (47%)
Of the people who identify themselves as marketers, 15% follow more than 2,000 people. This compares with 0.29% of overall Twitter users who follow more than 2,000 people.

One interesting chart shows the link between number of followers with the propensity to tweet. Apparently, folks don’t tweet much when no one is listenning.
First the networking giant joins the elite Dow Jones, and today it opens its Partner Summit Conference in Boston. CTO Padmasree Warrior kicks it off with a profound statement: “Great execution is almost always a competitive advantage over a good idea. Vision without execution is just a dream.”

So, Cisco will be executing on its vision (as reported by Var Guy):

Future of Work: Cisco and partners will focus on inter-company collaboration, mobile experience, clusters of experts and millennials. Voice, data and video must be integrated with consistency and interoperability, she notes, in order to drive the future of work collaboration.

Future of Connected Life: She noted trends like Internet mobility, video, content sharing (vs. owning) and lifestyle optimization. And she pointed out that the Flip video acquisition was not about the device. Rather, it’s about the architecture of tying the video content back to shared experiences.

Future of Computing: Warrior pulled up a classic chart showing the mainframe, microcomputer, client server, web and cloud eras. She pointed to virtualization as a disruptive force that set the stage for the cloud age.

In his latest Interview Project, he has assembled a team headed by son Austin to travel the US and collect remarkable stories from seemingly unremarkable people. 121 short episodes have been recorded. The first one, “Jess” debuted this week. It’s an interview with an older man looking for peace and hoping to find it in the desert near Needles, California.

Needles? Isn’t that where Snoopy’s brother lives?

The most annoying error message that comes up time and time again on so many iPod touch apps is “acquiring current position…”. Then the stupid thing just hangs.
The problem seems to be that the application is looking for my GPS location, but trouble is, I’m not running the application using an iPhone, I’m using my iPod. So why can’t I just type in my location? Just once, somewhere, I wish I could type it in so that all of these cool apps could actually work on my iPod Touch.

To all the wonderful iPhone app developers, please give a quick test of your application on iPod Touch. With a couple of simple tweaks to make your application iPod Touch friendly, you will be broadening your market.

Please if anyone out there knows of a way to fix these error messages on the iPod Touch, please comment or email us a fix. Preferably without going as far as full jailbreak. We’d even pay upto about 6 bucks for such an app with or without Apple’s approval.

A domain hack refers to integrating the top-level domain within the web site’s name. This was all the rage many years back when del.icio.us launched. The name was so clever that it fooled Yahoo into actually spending tens of mega millions of $ to buy it. Fooli.sh

So where are all the good hacks now, and why don’t businesses use them more?

Here in Ottawa, Aydin Mirzaee co-founded a great startup called Chide.it (Italy TLD) Recently, social net entrepreneur Scott Lake wrote a blog called Technologi.ca. (Canada TLD) I really like the hosted operating system called G.ho.st (São Tomé and Príncipe TLD). Another São Tomé favourite is Lu.st.

One supplier of illegal modified satellite receivers has BellExpress.vu (Vanuatu TLD in the south Pacific) Bell Express Vu is Bell Canada’s branded TV service.

Meanwhile, a dude named John Van Den Berg has Jo.hn locked up (Honduras TLD). Unfortunately the site has nothing but his picture. With the Billions of Johns in the world, it’s a shame to have Jo.hn wasted in this way.

Then there’s the “unintended domain hacks”. The Canadian Chartered Accountant Association has a site called Cica.ca. All the pre-schoolers laugh at that one!

What’s your favourite hack?

In the category of ‘You just can’t get there from here’, Google Adsense out does itself with an infinite website loop error.

A few months ago, we decided we would give Google Adsense a try. So we signed up for an account using our existing Google account. We then diligently added our website for their review process that could take a few weeks to complete. A few weeks later we went looking for the results. Needless to say, no word from Google. It would seem that our application was not even received. So we tried again, only this time we kept getting the same error. Account already activated, user id already exists.

Well, if you wouldn’t be darned that there was absolutely no way to get around this error loop. We tried submitting a query to the support group, but no answer from Google. So we tried a number of other approaches to resolve the site error. Only thing is that if you’re not already a client, you just can’t get support or so it seems. Seriously, give a try, see if you can get customer support from Google for Adsense if you’re not already a customer. If you figure this out we’d love to hear how you did it, and we’ll forever be in awe of your guru Google powers.

Oh, and here’s the kicker. According to Google’s terms and agreements to use Adsense, you can’t talk about Adsense on your blog. I think it’s a silicon valley secret Fight Club thing. First rule of Adsense, though shall not talk about Adsense. Second rule of Adsense see first rule. Actually, I think you’re not supposed to refer to the actual Adsense links on your site, otherwise you’re in violation. Maybe talking about Adsense site loops you’re still in the club.

At any rate, I don’t think we’ll ever be given Adsense privaledges. Um, if someone from Google is reading this and knows how to sort this out, we’ll happily delete this post for some help. thx

Do you know what makes Zune a superior mp3 player? It supports file formats that were invented back in 1933! yep 76 year old files – namely – FM radio. Not to be outdone by Microsoft’s cunning visionaries, Apple published a patent application this week for a METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR CONTROLLING AN ACCESSORY HAVING A TUNER. A tuner! Maybe those iPhone rumours are true after all. We hope that Apple goes beyond FM though. Why not throw in AM, Shortwave, and police band!

On the Microsoft patent front, they’ve published some interesting concepts this week. One is a COMMUNITY-BASED SOFTWARE APPLICATION HELP SYSTEM. Users will be able to share “how-to” videos with other users. CREATING VIRTUAL APPLICATIONS describes Microsoft’s extension of their VM technology to package a VA (virtual application) that includes an XML-based sequencer to configure and create the package.

MythBuster reruns seem to be the only thing worth watching on TV lately. For some reason you just can’t get bored watching stuff blow up or get smashed to bits. My favourite episode to date has to be the Tesla Earthquake Machine. The idea is that you attach this vibrating machine to a building. Once the machine matches the resonance of the building, the structure starts to shake until it collapses. I won’t give it way as to whether they busted the myth or not, suffice it to say that when they attached the device to a real bridge, some freaky vibes were found. Here are some myths I’d love to watch:

Magnetic motors (a.k.a. overunity engines)

Hydrogen fuel ‘boosters’. You know, the ones they advertise on the web that say that by adding hydrogen to your gas will get you better mileage, but will it wreck your car?

Thermal mechanical pumps built with metal hydrides – ok, so this one is probably real, but just hard to believe that this engine can generate electricity from only a water temperature differential.

Regenerative braking on big trucks. Ok, so this one is also a proven real technology, but I’d like to know how well these actually work under real world conditions.

The Energy Powers of Qigong. We’ve all seen the energy Qigong masters can project into others. Is there a way to measure this Qigong force?

Thomas Baekdal is a wonderful UX futurist. Based in Denmark, he provides a more “northern” view of the typical European user experience (imho). Last week he published his take on where people got their information over a 210 year span. The chart implies that technology will allow “people’s reality” to be highly democratized. Sort of like an online People’s Republic. ok, never mind!

I’d change one thing. In the furthest wave “Targeted”, I’d substitute “Tageted”. The philosophical implications of XML concepts on society are HUGE…

Love ‘em or hate ‘em. NetBooks are here to stay. You may have heard about the trademark controversy that erupted last December over the term “netbook”. Psion Teklogix, a Canadian manufacturer of industrial grade POS and mobile terminals filed a trademark application way back in 1996! They were granted the exclusive rights for “netbook” as it relates to a portable computer November 21, 2000.

But, Intel and a bunch of other vendors have used the phrase in billions of impressions for the past 2 years. Psion sued… but to what use?

The current CEO, John Conoley of Psion lists his expertise on LinkedIn as “Company Repositioning and Operational Turnaround” – yikes, doesn’t sound promising for Psion. We tried to reach Mr Conoley, no reply yet.

One thing we’re sure of: the mobile computing public does NOT want a Psion 8525 G2 (shown above) running Windows CE as their only choice of a netbook!

The problem with current netbooks is that most are stuck with boring “big desktop” OS – XP, Vista and 7. Intel released the availability of version 2.0 of Moblin – its Linux variant specifically designed for netbooks and the Atom processor. The efficiency of the OS is impressive – booting in 5 seconds with fast responsiveness.

The UI has been specifically designed for smaller screens ,net apps, and mobile users. The default screen is the “M-Zone” – thumbs of 1. recent activities (schedules etc); 2. recent files and websites; 3. Recent social networks.

Despite the strange name, Moblin appears to be capable of overcoming the “Linux jitters” for non-tech users. For Ubuntu fans, how does Moblin compare with Remix?
