Space Hotel to Open in 2012

Start planning that vacation to outer space: The first space hotel is expected to open as soon as 2012, it was reported today.

The hotel, "Galactic Suites," will allow adventurous travelers to enjoy a spectacular starry view from their hotel rooms, see the Sun rise 15 times a day and take part in scientific experiments while they are not using Velcro suits to crawl around their pod-room walls.

The trip won't be cheap though--a three-day stay will cost around $4 million, according to Reuters.

There were a few design kinks the company that is creating the hotel had to work out too, especially those involving water.

"It's the bathrooms in zero gravity that are the biggest challenge," company director Xavier Claramunt told Reuters. "How to accommodate the more intimate activities of the guests is not easy."

But they have found a solution to the problem of how to allow guests to shower: a spa room where guests can float around in bubbles of water.

And forget "around the world in 80 days"-- guest will travel around the world in 80 minutes.

The hotel was no more than a dream of Claramunt's until a generous space enthusiast fronted the $3 billion needed to build the hotel.

An American company aimed at colonizing Mars has invested in the hotel, which will be built from pods connected in a molecule-like structure, Reuters reported. Other private investors in Japan, the United States and the United Arab Emirates are also in talks to invest in the company.

It is up in the air as to how many people would be eager to make the trip into space for a weightless hotel stay.

"We have calculated that there are 40,000 people in the world who could afford to stay at the hotel. Whether they will want to spend money on going into space, we just don't know," Claramunt told Reuters.

Researchers invented 'paper' thin battery - Nano Technology

Researchers at the Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, have invented a super lightweight, flexible, biodegradable battery in the form of a piece of paper. By harnessing the power of nanotechnology among other things, the researchers figured out how to shrink, reinvent,
and otherwise repackage the components of a regular lithium-ion battery in a sheet of cellulose paper.

An early prototype of the device, just big enough to be held between thumb and forefinger, produces 2.5 volts, enough to power a small fan, or illuminate a light, and its inventors say that the battery can be easily scaled up to provide enough power to run any number of electronic
gadgets.

The scientists substituted nanotubes for the electrodes used in a conventional battery and used an ionic liquid solution as the battery's electrolyte. The nanotubes were embedded in the cellulose while the electrolyte was soaked into the material. The cellulose, which accounts
for 90% of the item's weight, acts as a separator.

Computer glitch causes delays at LAX

LOS ANGELES - Weary international passengers were stuck at Los Angeles International Airport for several hours, unable to set foot in the United States after a computer failure prevented customs officials from screening arrivals.

Over 20,000 international passengers, both Americans and foreigners, sat in four airport terminals and in 60 planes starting about 2 p.m. on Saturday, when the computer system broke down, said Los Angeles World Airports spokesman Paul Haney.

A major switch in the system, which contains names of arriving passengers and law enforcement data about them, including arrest warrants, had failed and had to be replaced, said Mike Fleming, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesman.

"That system allows our officers to make decisions on who we can allow to enter the United States," Fleming said. "You just don't know by looking at them."

The computers were fully restored at 11:45 p.m., and the last of backlogged passengers were processed by early Sunday, Fleming said.

"This is probably one of the worst days we've had. I've been with the agency for 30 years and I've never seen the system go down and stay down for as long as it did," Peter Gordon, acting port director for customs, told The Los Angeles Times.

Officials diverted seven incoming flights to an Ontario airport and advised international passengers departing Sunday to check the status of their flights before leaving for the airport.

Terminals that normally accept international passengers were full by 2:30 p.m. Saturday, and passengers arriving afterward had to remain on the runway until their was room inside the terminal buildings.

Three people were transported to local hospitals after they fell ill from waiting in the terminals, according to the Los Angeles City Fire Department.

"This is just unbearable," said Gaynelle Jones, 57, who landed on a 13-hour flight from Hong Kong at about 2:15 p.m. and was still sitting on her plane five hours later. She said she had missed her connecting flight to Houston.

"We've already been on a plane for several hours, and they have no timeframe for when we'll be able to get off," Jones said during a cell phone interview.

Airport officials said the stranded planes were connected to ground power and passengers had access to food, water and bathrooms.

"People are getting a little stir-crazy, feeling claustrophobic," said Chris Cognac, 39, who was returning with family and friends — including 10 children — from a week in Puerto Vallarta. The group had been sitting on the tarmac for five hours when he spoke by phone.

Passengers on his plane were in the aisles, holding their carry-on luggage, and ready to disembark when the flight crew asked them to return to their seats, Cognac said.

"Everybody's pretty angry with customs at the moment because they're not informing any one of anything," Cognac said. "It's becoming a logistical issue with diapers."

Google Inc. has developed a prototype cell phone that could reach markets within a year, and plans to offer consumers free subscriptions by bundling advertisements with its search engine, e-mail and Web browser software applications, according to a story published Thursday in The Wall Street Journal.

Google had engaged Taiwan's HTC to design a Linux software-based phone for launch in the first quarter of 2008.

T-Mobile would probably be Google's US partner, with France Telecom's Orange selling the phones in other markets.

Google had also approached the two biggest US wireless services, AT&T and Verizon Wireless, in recent months to ask them to sell phones with Google service.

“This RFID chip technology is indispensable to Malaysia in order to achieve our Vision 2020,” Dr Mahathir said at a press conference after the seventh annual meeting of the Multimedia Super Corridor’s International Advisory Panel (IAP) at Cyberjaya MSC.

Its call Malaysian Microchip - MM Chip. Measuring 0.5x0.5mm, the chip is expected to cost less than US$0.10 (38sen) each when commercial production is in full swing.

The MM chip measures 0.25 sq mm – about the size of a decimal point – and can be embedded in paper. It is useful for a variety of purposes, such as a replacement for barcode tags in retail goods, for differentiating between genuine and counterfeit currency notes, and for use in passports.

Its a Malaysia-Japanese venture between Malaysia Government, FEC Inc and Silterra.

The interesting point about this ebook is that it tries to stimulate the human experience with real paper - flipping the page.
The pages are turned by running a finger along one of the strips. Stroking the strip at different speeds allows the reader to speed read or casually browse the book.

Mouse Innovation - Tilt Wheel Technology

Microsoft is reinventing the mouse wheel, adding "Tilt Wheel Technology" for horizontal scrolling and smoothing the vertical scroll motion.

Microsoft is planning to launch three mice with the new tilting wheel on Sept. 3, one corded and two cordless operating at 27MHz, a company spokeswoman said. The mice will also have a feature that lets users toggle between open applications on a PC by pressing down on the wheel, she said.

The new Microsoft mice will be sold worldwide. Further product and pricing details will be announced at launch. Pricing is expected to be in line with Microsoft's current mouse portfolio, which ranges from $34.95 to $44.95 for corded and 27MHz cordless mice. Microsoft's Bluetooth mouse costs $84.95, according to Microsoft.

'Smart' Changing Room

A British company has developed a 'smart' changing room that tells clothes shoppers what not to wear.

Installed in a changing room, an array of about six cameras would feed data to a computer running software that matches particular styles to individual body shapes.

The inventors say it could provide advice like "your bum looks too big in this" - or words to that effect.

Computer system 'can land aircraft without air traffic controllers' by year 2020

Elizabeth Day of telegraph.co.uk said that British Aerospace scientists have developed a revolutionary airborne computer system that they claim can land aircraft safely without human air traffic controllers. It will enable a pilot to determine an aircraft's landing path simply by pressing a button in the cockpit.

The aim is to eliminate human error, save on fuel and increase flight safety. Wonder if they have done enough to ensure a failure proof system in the first place.

- The company plans to introduce the system, which has so far cost £76 million, half of which has been funded by the European Commission, in three phases.
- BAE plans a full-scale trial introduction for leading airlines by 2008.

- If successful, it will also threaten the jobs of 40,000 air traffic controllers worldwide.

Spray-on Nanocomputers at hospital by Year 2013

The Edinburgh Evening News writes that "spray-on computers the size of a grain of sand are set to transform information technology."

Scientists at the Edinburgh University have just been awarded a £1.3 million grant to develop the "ubiquitous computing" technology which uses tiny semiconductor specks that can sense, compute and communicate without wires.

Researchers are already working with staff at Edinburgh hospitals to develop a method of using the computers to monitor heart patients at home.

They plan to spray the nanocomputers on to the chests of coronary patients, where the tiny cells would record a patient’s health and transmit information back to a hospital computer.

And this isn't the only application envisioned by the scientists. Professor Arvid, who leads the project, thinks our current computer interfaces, typically a keyboard or a mouse, will completely be replaced by these nanocomputers.

Arvid said: "In the future, computers will be able to be diffused into the environment. There won’t be a sharp division -- barricades will just disappear into the background.
"One way to achieve that will be computers the size of a grain of sand. Just by spraying them on to objects, you can computerise them. They would create a network which can transmit wirelessly to each other.

"In a cubic millimetre, you can have a sensor for heat, pressure, light and so on, but also a computer and wireless technology."
And when will see these nanocomputers? Sooner that you think. According to Arvid, the technology should be ready within four years.

And these spray-on nanocomputers should be at work in hospitals, schools and shops in less than ten years.

Smart Buildings

Can building automation systems overcome interoperability problems to assert control over our offices, hotels, and airports?

If only you could work in a building where you could keep your office as you like it, icicle-cold, while your neighbor turns hers into a sauna. If only your office lights and computer could flicker on every morning when you swiped your security card in your building's lobby, so that you would be ready to work when you sat down with your first cup of coffee. And while we're on this flight of fancy, wouldn't it be reassuring to know that your building would shield you from harm in the event of an earthquake, or even a chemical or biological attack?

Buildings could do all these things and more, if only they had brains.

As it happens, a few buildings already do, and they're getting smarter. The brainiac of buildings, the U.S. Pentagon, opened for business on 12 September 2001, the day after terrorists crashed a plane into it. Thanks to a network of digital sensors and controllers that let operators close dampers and turn off fans, the fire from the crash was confined to one wedge of the building.
