Salvation Army tests smartphones and credit cards; churches test pledging by phone

The earthquake that devastated Haiti nearly two years ago was followed by a massive relief effort that was supported in part by millions of dollars in donations by people who used mobile phones to text $5 or $10 to disaster aid groups.

Since the Jan. 12, 2010, earthquake, mobile giving has moved beyond disaster aid. Now, people make all kinds of charitable donations and pledges through wireless smartphones and tablets -- and the donations don't have to be done by text, according to industry officials.

This holiday season, the Salvation Army is testing smartphones that accept a credit card swipe using technology from mobile payment startup Square. Users in four cities can make gifts via credit card and smartphone as an alternative to dropping coins in a red kettle, Salvation Army Major George Hood said.

Mobile giving has also gotten religion -- literally. Some churches in Los Angeles and parts of Arizona have recently tested systems that allow their members use cellphones to make their Sunday-morning offerings virtually, instead of dropping coins, bills or envelopes in a plate passed down the pew.

"The minister will say, 'Normally I tell you to turn off your cell phone in church, but now you can turn it on' to pledge," said Douglas Plank, the CEO of MobileCause, which has sponsored several mobile pledging tests with churches and temples.

"People forget to bring their checkbooks, so using the phone makes sense," Plank said. "The ministries that have tested it see a 10% to 15% bump in giving when they do it."

Plank expects mobile pledging to "really take off" once the software is perfected and becomes widely available. The mobile giving concept makes sense because smartphone adoption is exploding and smartphones and tablets can be used to make gifts via text message or over the mobile Web and through mobile applications, including social networking apps.

Many disaster aid campaigns have relied on contributions of fixed amounts, such as $5 or $10, via texting, with wireless carriers dropping the texting fees and collecting the donations to distribute to charities. But new tools make it possible to make more generous donations via an SMS message or a smartphone app linked to a credit card or other account, Plank said.

MobileCause, which has worked with 1,000 charities to set up mobile giving programs, hopes to take advantage of emerging technologies such as Near Field Communication (NFC) to quicken the pace of mobile payments, Plank said. NFC is behind the Google Wallet application, which is currently available on the Nexus S 4G smartphone from Sprint. Google Wallet allows a user to touch a payment terminal with an NFC-ready smartphone to transfer funds. NFC is also being tested by a carrier consortium called Isis, which offers a rival to Google Wallet.

"All that NFC stuff is really fabulous for nonprofits, as a useful tool to reach their constituents," Plank said. "But we don't want to replace traditional communications tools, so this is additive."

How "additive" the mobile giving technology tools become is the big question -- one that the Salvation Army and others will monitor closely.

Mich. AG promotes computer safety to young people

LIVONIA, Mich.— Michigan. Attorney General Bill Schuette has returned to school to give a talk about computer safety.

Schuette visited a class Wednesday at Holmes Middle School in Livonia near Detroit. It's part of a cyber-safety program started in 2007 by his predecessor, Mike Cox.
Schuette says kids need tools to recognize and avoid predators on the Internet. Representatives from the attorney general's office are available to talk to students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
The sessions are tailored to the ages of the students. Schuette has updated the program to include information about bullies on the Internet and the transfer of sexually explicit photos on wireless phones. There's also information available for parents and educators who want to discuss the issues in their own forums.

Bravely stepping into the no-man’s land between phones and tablets, Samsung’s 5.3in smartphone, the Galaxy Note, attempts to bridge the divide between the 4.3in Galaxy S II and the newly announced Galaxy Tab 7.7.

With a 5.3in, 1,280 x 800 Super AMOLED display beaming forth, the Galaxy Note immediately grabs the attention. The display is eye-searingly bright, and colours are as rich and saturated as we’ve come to expect from Samsung’s Super AMOLED technology. The huge resolution gives the Galaxy Note a super crisp 285 ppi (pixels per inch) pixel density, which leaves it not too far behind the 326ppi of Apple’s iPhone 4 Retina display.

Small hands will struggle with the Galaxy Note’s 83mm width – not to mention the fact that persons of a smaller stature will look like they’re holding a full-sized tablet to their ear – but this giant smartphone felt perfectly manageable in my larger palms. The 9.65mm thickness gives the Galaxy Note a slim, dainty profile, and while Samsung made no mention of weight, it didn’t feel it unduly heavy.

There’s a trick hidden in the Galaxy Note’s bottom corner, however: a removable stylus that Samsung’s dubbed the S Pen.
This stylus partners with Samsung’s S Note software for making handwritten notes or even artistic sketches. It’s possible to choose from a variety of pen/brush types and thicknesses with the drop-down menu, and thanks to the Galaxy Note’s sizeable screen, inking feels natural and comfortable.

While it’s easy to scribble handwritten notes, or doodle to your heart’s content, you can also import pictures onto the canvas. While any photograph will do, it’s possible to grab a screenshot – from Google Maps, for instance – and then directly annotate it with the S Pen.

Basic handwriting recognition also allows you to use the S Pen within the Note’s messaging application. In our brief time with the Galaxy Note, however, it appeared that only single words could be converted, and there was a noticeable pause as the recognition process took place. Clearly, the Galaxy Note’s handwriting recogniton still has some way to go. Still, with Samsung planning to release the S Pen SDK to app developers, there’s a potentially bright future for pen-driven apps.

Happily, though, the S Pen makes a great partner with the pre-installed Swype keyboard – without a finger to obscure the view, we found it quicker to tap texts than ever. Samsung’s also trying to tout the Note as a hybrid business device. With Juniper Networks’ Junos Pulse installed as standard – an SSL-enabled VPN service – and that high-resolution screen making remote desktop operation entirely feasible, the Galaxy Note is potentially more capable than a standard smartphone.

Going by the range of accessories on show, Samsung’s keen to stress the Note’s versatility. In addition to swish leather cases, larger styluses, docking stations and vehicle mounts, the appearance of Bluetooth keyboards seems to suggest that the Note is capable of much more than just phone, SMS and internet duties.

There’s no doubting the Galaxy Note’s potential. With a dual-core 1.4Ghz processor powering Google’s Android 2.3; 16GB or 32GB of internal memory; wireless networking that includes Bluetooth 3 and reaches up to dual-band 802.11n; an 8-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front-facing camera; GPS; and Full-HD video recording at 30fps, the Galaxy Note can hold its own against any smartphone on the market today.
But with no set price or mention of a release date, we’ll just have to sit patiently and wait for our very own review unit to arrive. Only then will we be able to tell whether Samsung’s over-sized smartphone is a genuine star in the making.

Samsung Electronics, one of the largest electronic manufacturers in the world, stopped in Germany the promoting of its new Galaxy 7.7 tablet just revealed at IFA Berlin on September 1, the largest electronics show in the world, after Apple won a new order to block sales of Galaxy tablets, writes Bloomberg news agency.

“Samsung will respect the court decision”, said James Chung, a spokesman for Samsung. “We believe that this severely limits consumer choice in Germany”, he added.

According to company officials, Samsung will continue to use all available options, including legal action to protect its intellectual property rights.

The dispute between the two companies competing on the smartphone market takes place in at least five countries, including South Korea, Japan, Germany and Britain.

Apple sued Samsung in April, claiming that its Galaxy devices have copied design technologies and models used by Apple to create the iPad tablet and iPhone smartphones. The case against Samsung is added to the process patent against infringement on Android devices, such as the ones made by Motorola Mobility Holdings and HTC, as Google Android OS is now gaining market share.

The move of Apple raises the stakes for Google, which has accused his rivals for their partnership to buy thousands of patents at the Nortel auction where Google lost ground, accusing them that they were trying to hinder the popular Google Android operating system.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 released at IFA Berlin technology show, has presented a new generation of displays, the Super Amoled technology with a WXGA resolution of 1280×800 pixels. Galaxy Tab 7.7 is only 7.89 mm thick and weighs 335 g, and also has a slot for an SD card which can expand the memory up to 32GB.

Tablet PC sales worldwide this year will reach 53.5 million units in the request for iPhone and devices equipped with Google’s Android operating system, according to estimates made by the research company International Data Corporation.
