A Quiet Weekend In Batangas

Nakakamiss mag picture, nakakamiss din mag blog. In an era of overflowing content, sometimes we simply want quiet. Amidst the noise and people desperate for attention, we occasionally seek a place away from it all. Recently, I enjoyed a tranquil weekend at Punta Verde Resort in Batangas.

It had been a while since our last long drive, and I was initially skeptical due to the weather radar predicting total cloud cover with a 30% chance of rain. However, the experience turned out to be a refreshing break. We drove through SLEX, took the Batangas-Ibaan Exit, and continued along Batangas-Taysan Road. While I’m uncertain whether I’d recommend this route for sedan drivers, we made it through just fine. Along the way, we also passed by Malabrigo Lighthouse, a historical gem worth stopping by.

Upon arrival, I was pleasantly surprised by the serene atmosphere of the resort, even on a weekend. It was exactly what we needed to escape the hustle and bustle. Although the frequent trips up and down to the beach could be a bit tiring, especially given the 200+ flights of stairs, the resort's two large infinity pools provided a perfect alternative for those not keen on the climb. For future visitors, I’d recommend choosing accommodations closer to the main area to minimize the trek.

On our way home, we opted for a longer route to avoid the challenging spots along Batangas-Taysan Road, especially with the impending rain.

Late Spring Skiing: Kiroro Ski Resort, Hokkaido

When you think of skiing, the icy embrace of winter probably comes to mind. But for those who are late to the snow or simply prefer milder weather, Kiroro Ski Resort in Hokkaido, Japan, offers an extended season that stretches into late spring and sometimes even early summer. Here’s a first-hand account from a recent visit that might help you plan your own spring ski adventure.

Why Kiroro?

Located in the snowy haven of Hokkaido, Kiroro Ski Resort stands out as one of the few places where skiing extends well beyond the typical season. The resort’s high altitude and favorable microclimate ensure a steady supply of snow, making it a reliable destination for late-season skiers.

Getting There: The Travel Hiccups

Travelers should note critical updates regarding transportation. We visited on the 27th of April (their last operating day for the year), and the regular bus schedule, as listed in many guides, was no longer operational during our visit. Instead, we took a train from Sapporo Station to Otaruchikko Station, which took about an hour. From there, we hailed a taxi to Kiroro, which cost us 4000 yen for more than a half-hour ride, an unexpected expense. Fortunately, they had a bus scheduled to leave the resort at 5 PM, going back to Otaru Station, so we were saved from having to take another taxi. While taxis are a reliable alternative, it’s wise to coordinate with the resort’s information desk to align your plans and avoid potential hiccups.

Pros and Cons

The Good:

Less Crowd: Enjoy the slopes without the overwhelming crowds.
Mild Weather: For first-time skiers, the spring temperatures are more forgiving, offering an enjoyable experience without the biting cold.

The Not-so-Good:

Transportation Issues: The discontinuation of the regular bus schedule means you’ll need to plan your transportation more carefully.

Tips for First-Time Spring Skiers

Plan Ahead: Confirm transportation arrangements with the resort in advance to avoid any last-minute surprises.
Dress Appropriately: Even in late spring, weather conditions can vary. Layering is key to staying comfortable.

Hi guys! As you may have read, one of the assessment requirements for ETEEAP (as mentioned in my previous post) is the Certificate of Proficiency or Competency.

I have been getting questions if I can share a copy of my Certificate of Proficiency which unfortunately took me a year to locate and had time to post. So now, I am happy and proud to say that I found it and will be sharing it with everyone.

But, before that, please bear in mind the following notes:

This is based on the template that I used in 2016, it worked for LPU at that time. But, some schools may have specific and or updated requirements. So kindly take this as a guide rather than an official template.
The Certificate of Proficiency, based on what I remember from the ETEEAP requirement should come from your existing employer. It should be signed by your manager or someone higher.
Highlight Relevant Skills. In my case, I really aimed for business management so I included skills that are closely relevant to it.
Include the details of your company, this information will be used by some schools that are conducting random audits and checking. It will also make your document look legit.

If I have missed something important, please add them to the comment and I will include it in our list. For now, here is the template I used. By the way, I edited some information for confidentiality.

Where are we in times of pandemic?

A week before the pandemic, I flew back from an 11 days Japan trip. Touching down in NAIA at 4am, I was dying to have a coffee but had to head home because we don't have the energy to carry our baggage around. We were so tired yet so happy and fulfilled. Little did I know that a long travel hiatus is about to begin.

March 16, the Community Quarantine was announced. We were happy that we get to work from home. A week passed by, then a month, then today as of writing this - is almost a year already.

So where was I for the past months? Like many of us, I am home, safe, healthy, and grateful for many things despite what's going on. I really wish you feel the same from your safe spot as you read this.

The days passing by were difficult. It is never easy to stay positive and uplifted especially for me. This is the longest time that I haven't traveled since I learned how to walk, I guess. But we got this, we have to find things that we love in order to survive.

As for me, I have gotten by the last year jumping from one interest to another, trying to find my little space of happiness on things around me. I tried TikTok, if you have one please check mine - @tinyartcollective. I also went from cooking, dancing, working out, then I learned how to bake.

This is interesting, I never owned an oven though I have been really a fan of cakes. I never thought I can create one. It all started when I saw a meringue in IG, it is bright and joyful looking so I thought I'd love to try it. I was surprised to have been relaxed and released doing it. So I tried a few more, unlocking new techniques, one after the other.

DIY JAPAN ITINERARY, EXPENSE & TIPS: NAGOYA, OSAKA, KYOTO, NARA

Almost at the end of 2019 and this blog is going to celebrate its 9th year in the virtual world. Nothing much has changed, apart from the frequency of my posts, I still love this site like when I've written my first post, it still gives me warmth and comfort like as if it is my real home in the www.

Today, let me share something special - I created an extension of this blog on YouTube with the goal of learning new ways of sharing and connecting. I tried creating a video and learning like a baby. This one I made for my recent Japan trip last spring.

This is my second time in Japan, and I'm loving this country more and more. Visiting during spring or Sakura season was not really on my plans - because I don't think that the pink cherry blossoms really is my kind of thing. But it caught my heart 3000 times, the vibes, the calming weather of spring is a must experience in Japan. Highly recommended to those who are traveling with their family especially with kids and grannies. In this trip we were able to spend a day in Nagoya, Osaka, Nara and Kyoto.

What to wear during Spring/Sakura Season:

Japan's spring season begins in March and ends in May. This is when the beautiful and colorful Cherry Blossoms and other flowers blooms. The Sakura Season is quite shorter than the spring time, it will only last around two weeks and may vary yearly.

During spring time, the temperature may go up to around 17 and as low as 3 depending on the place you are going to visit. Based on our experience, we were there late March to April and the weather was still very cold for a Pilipina who's used to the Philippine weather. I think the temperature that time ranges from 3 to 10 at most during day time, it also rained from time to time which made it feel colder. With that, proper set of clothes is very crucial for you to enjoy your spring vacation.

Here's my TIPS:

Make sure to bring your thermal inner wears. I had mine from Uniqlo - those were the sets I bought for my last winter trip.
You will never go wrong with having a bubble jacket and a thick coat. Based on my experience, spring could be windier than winter, so be ready with some good outer layers to keep you warm :)
Do not under estimate the convenience of having a good pair of sneakers and flats. This is specially if you are doing a DIY Trip, because while boots could bring your look to a whole new different style, it could also make or break your day specially if you are not use to wearing them. Remember to always choose comfort over style - and nothing beats if you can hit both.
BUY THEM IN YOUR COUNTRY or bring one from your closet!!! You will do yourself a huge favor of buying these cold weather apparel here. When we were there last March, stores were already updating their stocks for spring and summer collections, finding a good clothing that will keep you warm might be very difficult and costly during this time.
Layer with colors. Spring is a happy and vibrant season, so you may wanna go with the vibes. Colors like bright yellow, green, pink, sky blue were my favorites.

Arriving at Nagoya International Airport at night/sleeping at the airport:

I've been flying with Cebu Pacific for most of my travels and that includes my Japan trip. If you are flying with them and looking for cheaper Japan flight, you might have noticed that Nagoya as point of entry is one of the best option. If you are flying Manila to Nagoya here are some quick guides you might want to consider.

Sleeping at the airport is okay. We have tried this because most of the Cebu Pacific flights to Chubu International Airport is at night. Leaving Manila at 3PM and arriving in Japan at 8PM, and since we usually avail of JR Passes and it is not smart to activate it at this point just to cover the train ticket out of the airport.
Find a place closer to train station. If it is your fist time, navigating around might be a little bit challenging specially that your body is still adjusting to the cold weather. While taking a taxi could be an option, it will be on a hefty cost.
Wear you warm clothing before going out of the airport. The night in Nagoya when we visited last spring was still as cold as winter - no kidding.

Getting around Nagoya and Japan in General:

Getting around Nagoya is just very similar to getting around anywhere in Japan. It's very easy and convenient, but considering the following tips might help your trip too.

Take advantage of tourist passes, especially if this is your first time. Their train stations are not so simple for those who haven't been to countries with extensive metro railway system. Having a pass might save you from paying if you happen to mistakenly enter or aboard the wrong train. I prefer the Kansai Wide Area Pass - Japan Rail Pass
for this trip.
Ask for help. Japanese are very helpful and accommodating, so if you already feel that you are kinda lost, don't hesitate to ask.
Learn the art of using Google Maps. Japan's transport system is perfectly integrated with google maps, and it works like magic! You can see the travel time, which train to take, which platform and even the fare cost is there.
Be respectful and obedient to their commuting etiquette. Japanese are nice and Japan is such an ideal place to visit and even settle - and this is primarily because of the incomparable discipline and manners of the Japanese. Note that, talking loud and accepting calls while in public transport can be very disturbing. Throwing your rubbish just anywhere is a big NO, NO. Cutting the line is a shame! So please be mindful :)

Japan Budget Itinerary & Expense - Nagoya, Takayama, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Osaka

It's apparent that Japan is one of the most interesting vacation destinations , however, it is also one of the most expensive countries to visit making it very difficult for average earner to make this dream come true. Like many of those who have been dreaming about a visit in Japan, it took me some time to think about the budget too and to save for the trip; hence, I made sure that we get the most out of our budget.

I know there are few who've been looking forward to this since I have been asked a few times about how much did we spent in our 11 days DIY winter trip in Japan, and as promised here's the most awaited budget itinerary and expense with bonus tips and guides.

First of all, below are the documents we've had handy for this trip.

TIP: Printing the flight and hotel booking made it easier to access some information needed during the immigration screening and completing the immigration forms. It also gave me some feeling of security that I will have the information in case my mobile devices fail.

Converted Currency:

We had our peso converted to Yen at Asian FX Foreign Exchange, besides Sanry Money Changer in Market Market, they exchange peso to yen at .48 Yen, .02cents better than Sanry's Rate during that time. It was our best option then since it's holidays and we don't have much time to look for better rates.

Options:

Banks offer a better rate. Visit your branch of account and check for options.

I tried requesting from BDO and they will reserve the have to wait to get the currency, however, there's no guarantee of how soon
BPI also does, but haven't tried because our branch of account is quite far from the office
No information about other banks

Debit Cards, I called BDO to have my card activated for international transactions. According to the agents, international debit card are readily available to be used for international transactions but they recommend to call them for the notice to travel, you will provide them the dates and country to visit. This is just to avoid your international transactions from getting blocked.
ATM at familymart, 7/11 and Lawson are mostly ready for cash withdrawal using your ATM/Debit cards. We tried all three of them, familymart and Lawson converts peso to yen at .49yen with 120-180 yen service charge while 7/11 doesn't have any charges, but with the disclaimer that your bank may charge an international transaction fee.

Pre-departure Process and Fees:

I checked-in via Cebu Pacific's online kiosk - it's faster here
Dropped my baggage at the DROP-BAG Counter
Fill-out the immigration form
Fall in line for immigration clearance
We were asked with the basic information about our trip (e.g. return date)

TIP: We paid the travel tax together with the plane ticket, you will have that option too and I can say it is very convenient.

Arriving and spending the night at Chubu International Airport in Nagoya

While on the flight you will be given a form, it's the disembarkation document, complete the form and keep it with you, you will need this as you pass the immigration counter
Upon exit, we followed the other passengers and fall in line for immigration, there were some officers to help you with the process, so nothing to worry.
The process is fast :) we are ready to pick up our baggage after less than 15 minutes
After picking up the baggage we head to the airport lobby to look for a place where we could eat our dinner
The Chubu International Aiport closes at around 12:00am after its last flight but part of the lobby and the central square is open
Our flight arrived at 9PM and I don't find it practical to book for a hotel because we planned to leave Nagoya early in the morning, so we joined some of the travelers at the arrivals waiting-area just right outside the baggage claims, find our spot and spent our night there
There are drinking fountain, free WIFI, charging station and comfort rooms available close to the waiting area, making it comfortable for a night stay. Lights were on and guards are roaming around from time to time, the TV was on all night too but it didn't bother me and I was able to have good sleep for a couple of hours.

Getting around Japan:

If there is something I am excited about Japan, it would be their transportation system. Japan is renowned for its highly efficient public transport system and it didn't disappoint me. At the first look of the map and the lines, it made me feel a bit scared and overwhelmed but soon got used to it and realize how genius the routing and timing is.

TIP: If you are to spend time planning, focus on the mode of transportation because Japan's public transits are expensive - check google maps to get the idea.

In this DIY trip, I spent time and paid all the attention planning the best route to get from City to City by strategically calculating cost and time.

Day 1 - 3 - we paid the regular fare in buses and trains
Day 4 - we purchased the Takayama Shinhotaka Open Ticket which is valid for two days
Day 5 - we activated my Takayama-Hokuriko Area Tourist Pass (JR Regional Pass) covering Takayama-Shirakawa-go and vise versa
Day 5 - 9 - Takayama > Toyama > Kanazawa > Kyoto > Osaka transportation cost was also covered by the Takayama-Hokuriko Area Tourist Pass (JR Regional Pass)
Day 10 - we opted to visit areas that are walking distance from our stay
Day 11 - we paid at a regular rate for the train from Kyoto Station to Kansai International Airport

Notice that we activated my pass in the middle of my trip. This is because those were the time when we need to travel in longer distance and higher frequency and with that we didn't only save money but also the effort because you do not need to worry about buying the tickets from time to time.

11-Days Japan Winter Trip Highlights

All smiles because it's not just our usual holiday vacation but a long Japan winter trip! After months and months of contemplating about the budget, we finally were able to make that dream come true last new year.

During the planning, we focused more on major places to visit and expanded the planning from there. That time I am sure about Shirakawa-go and Jac is sure about Kyoto, making it easier to plan because both are easily accessible from each City; though later on we’ve figured out that accessibility is something you need to worry last.

So, the initial plan was, Nagoya (entry, they have the lowest rate for plane tickets), Takayama (Shirakawa-go and Shinhotaka Ropeway) then head to Kyoto and Osaka (exit). Initial travel duration was 5-7days but after we got our visa and started scouting for the flight tickets we didn’t find any better fare rates that we can call reasonable considering the location, time and expenses. We also calculated fares (trains and buses) and ended up thinking that the prices were too high for just a short travel period.

With that, we decided to go for an 11-day trip to Japan!!!! And we were so excited that even now as I am writing this, I can still feel the giddiness I had back then. 11 days in Japan may sound crazy and scary but it was all worth it! And to share some highlights about that 11days, here is the summary.

OPS! Before the highlights (Which might get your carried away) let me bring you this list of Japan series post I am planning to accomplish, hopefully before March to help out those who are planning their trip to the Land of the Rising Sun.

And without further ado! Our 11 days Japan Trip….

Day 1 – Manila to Nagoya

Hoarding heat packs!!!!

Flights to Nagoya airport are limited and all have evening arrivals. With that, we decided to spend the airport for the night to save accommodation cost and head to Takayama early in the morning.

Day 2 – Around the streets of Nagoya

This day around was serendipity. It was totally unplanned, and the reason why is that we had a lot of things we fail to consider during the planning (which I don’t think we really did haha), that includes the time differences ETA 8AM PH time but 9PM JPN time – we fail to have our JR pass exchanged so we need to do it the next day instead, the need for credit card to rent a WIFI device which cost us an hour to figure out how can we get by without internet. Long story short, we were left by the bus to Takayama and trains were fully booked!

TIP: we bought a Simcard and pledged that we are only going to use it for navigation, which serves us very well because hotels and stations have free WIFI.

We left Nagoya at 6PM and arrived in Takayama a little past 9PM. Tai-san (the kindest and the most accommodating host we’ve ever met – all the Japanese we’ve met are kind and helpful he is just on a different scale) fetched us at the station and we spent our night at Soy Guesthouse.

My first glance at real snow!!! I can’t thank the universe enough for this opportunity! Such a perfect way to end the year.

Day 3 – First day in Takayama – New Year’s Day

This is the first time that I didn’t celebrate the New Year’s Eve. We only slept and woke up to a special Japanese breakfast prepared by Tai-san’s parents. While there were no loud parties, the view, the special breakfast with the best tea, the warm morning greetings from Tai and his parents, the fun quick morning chat with their guests from Romania and Thailand, the coffee after breakfast, the fireplace and first breath of real winter breeze were amazing. I keep on uttering Arigatou Gozaimasu to the universe and the God’s for such blissful first day of the year!

Before noon time we moved to Sora Ama Hostel and had an enjoyable lunch at Hana Chinese Restaurant (not Japanese we craved for fried chicken and rice with veggies after seeing their menu) then spent our afternoon strolling around the old village in Takayama.

Day 4 – Shinhotaka Ropeway

On our fourth day, we decided to visit Shinhotaka Ropeway before Shirakawa-Go. This is where I unleashed the Elsa in me, borrowing Little Red Ridinghood’s coat at -18c.

Ended this supper cold day with Hida Beef Curry, hot sake and an hour of Pachinko! What’s Japan without these three?

Day 5 – Shirakawa-go

My DREAM, I am literally leaving in my Dream! When I saw this a photo of this village around four years ago, my heartbeat literally skip for a sec and back in a faster pace panicking because of the thought of how the hell can I afford to be here? But dream something big that you cannot afford until you become the person who can – they say!

Day 6 – Short but sweet ride to Toyama

Left Takayama early the 6th day and took the 8am train to Toyama, this was covered by our JR Takayama-Hokuriku Pass which I found very helpful and SULIT (in our own words). This is a day of pure sightseeing. The way to Toyama from Takayama gives a breathtaking view of snowy Japan Alps. That was one heaven of a ride :)

Arriving at Toyama at noon time we were already hungry, so we decided to check the food house at a mall near the station. We also made a quick stop at some stores (andaming sale!!!! Like NEW YEAR SALE haha) and calmly shop some IMPORTANT stuff like the coat – because I realize that I NEED it haha.

Moving to Kanazawa we took our first Shinkansen ride which was still covered by the JR Pass. We spent the night at Blue Hour Kanazawa

Day 7 – Kanazawa - Marsh of Gold

Kanazawa and Toyama were not in the original plan, but inside me is the voice of this city calling – “visit me, you love gold right?”. I gave in and follow the voice and it did not disappoint me!

A gold ice cream cheers for everyone who dares to follow the voice inside them screaming for adventures!

Later that afternoon, we headed to Kyoto and checked-in at Stay-inn Kyoto Gojo – our home for the remaining four days in Japan.

Day 8 – Osaka from Kyoto

When Katamaran strikes, the itinerary is over! Hahaha. Woke up late and start moving late. We were still under the overwhelming days we had in Takayama that what we afford on this day was check our budget and want for shopping! Kidding!

We planned to go to osaka using the pass, but we rode a wrong bus and had an adventurous one and half hour figuring our way to Kyoto station and arrived in Osaka at around 1PM. Our afternoon was spent at Osaka Castle, it has a huge park and we enjoyed roaming around and watching Japanese spending family time and tourist crazy taking all the photos they could get.

The night was even livelier as we get to see the Iconic Glico Man in Dotonbori, seeing it somehow gave me such an empowering feeling that nothing is impossible. The vibe of this shopping district was totally different yet charming on its own. A must visit spot.

Day 9 – Kyoto

Day 9 in Japan and day 2 of our katamaran (laziness) woke up and move late again. We were planning to visit the Bamboo forest and Inari shrine but we only manage to go to Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. We spent a little time walking and thought we are already bit late for Inari. So instead, we went back to Osaka and spent the night eating and walking around Dotonbori. We also took this time to shop for pasalubong and complete the shopping list for Family, friends, and neighbors (lol).

Meet C. Tagle – we wish we got her name! she’s a Filipina-Japanese (but haven’t been to the Philippines, but speak very good Tagalog) she approached me in tagalog while looking at some Onitsuka shoes. Hi girl! Hope you read this, arigato again for assisting us and for the good quick chat!

That night I gave in to capitalism, I had my first cup of Starbucks coffee – coffee jelly is such a comfort drink. I always grab one when I am feeling super tired and it is just a perfect drink for this night.

Day 10 – Kyoto

Officially our last day in Japan where we have the time to roam around. We had the longest walk of our life in this day haha 11km at 16k steps. We also had our unforgettable bike experience (under freezing rain )and biggest misadventure in this trip (Jac’s phone fell from my pocket while biking and got run over by vehicles). Side note - Jac’s phone is okay now, it looks hopeless but the magic was done in Greenhills and they were able to revive the phone. Awesome!

Highlights of this walking tour is the beautiful garden of Kyoto’s Nijo Palace, International Manga Museum, cheap lunch at Sukiya, Nishiki District Market, last dinner at a ramen house that was recommended by Shunji-san and looks like a popular store for local but not to tourist – I wish they have an English name though because they are really cheap and delicious!

Day 11 – Awww Japan to Manila

Preparing our stuff and was ready to leave the inn by exactly 10am (check-out time in Japanese stays). Shunji-san took us to Kyoto Station and handed this charms. So sweet!!

Before leaving Kyoto station we spent a little time buying some more pasalubong using our last few yens left. We left Kyoto station 1PM and arrived at Kansai International Airport at around 3PM for our 7PM flight.

And that's my 11 Days in Japan. Sounds random right? Only 20-30% of this trip is planned and the rest are spontaneous decisions we made every day. True that it doesn’t give us the approximate of what we can still do in a day but those adventures you had behind each of steps you mistook which lead you far to your destination but closer to discovering some paths that nobody had written about yet is your own story, your own adventure.

It was in Italy where the Renaissance revolution began, and the country has been the birthplace of the most famous artists ever. Thus, it is no surprise to see the country rich of magnificent artworks and ancient treasures displayed in its museums. Attend the carnivals

Venice celebrates Carnevale during February that culminates in Mardi Gras. The origin of the two-week long festival can bet raced far back as the 12th century. Carnival of Satriano di Lucania takes place in a small town and draws many locals and tourists. With the display of ancestral masks, it is one of the most evocative Carnival of Italy.

Explore the art and history

Exploring Italy is like taking an outdoor class in history, wherever you go, and no matter what city, there are magnificent architecture and historical monuments to see and visit. One can always join short courses in art history in English which are offered by the British Institute of Florence. All one needs to do is stroll down the cobblestone streets of famous cities, and they are sure to come across outdoor art galleries. Be a part of Medici Archive Project where you can visit the quaint hillside town of Dozza and decorate the facades of buildings and houses with contemporary-style murals. Admire the breathtaking Amalfi Coast from the cliff-side gardens in Ravello or enjoy looking at the artistic riches in Venice that houses the most extensive collection of Titian art. Umbria’s newest vineyard is a unique architectural masterpiece which has been designed by Pomodoro. Admire the architecture as you sip Sagrantino at the Tenuta Castelbuono winery. Another good idea is to bike through the hills of Ferrara in Emiglio Romagna and enjoy looking at those castles and palaces in the countryside. You can also attend the world’s oldest biennial exhibition of international contemporary art at the Venice Biennale.

Enjoy the Opera and music

Roman amphitheater remains one of the best-preserved examples of how the ancient Romans enjoyed their music and theater. Located in Italy’s north in Verona, enjoy spectacular opera performances in one of the world’s most spectacular amphitheater. Opera classics in Lucca will allow you to understand the musical genre in Italy from the 16th century. During the Verdi festival, that takes place every October, the melodies of Verdi at the opera in Parma sweep away its audiences to another world. There’s nothing quite like experiencing the interactive opera by Musica a Palazzo that stages evening performances in Palazzo Barbarigo Minotto. Feel the walls vibrating with every soaring operatic note in a palatial home.

Embark on a culinary journey

If you have not tasted Italian food, it means you have not understood Italy completely. Thus, you must understand its food culture, and there is a lot more to Italy than just those pizzas and pasta or the lasagna. Each region and city in Italy is famous for own culinary traditions. Naples in the south is famous for its pizzas as well as the hearty truffle-based dishes. Ciociaria region overflowing with unique food traditions, and here you can learn to make food from the finest local ingredients. You can learn to make and taste delicious Italian pastries like cannoli and cassata. Throughout April and May, Puglia Sea Urchin are harvested on the shores of San Vito, and this is the time to indulge in the unique delicacy. Look for authentic delicacies you are sure to find in small rural towns.

Enjoy special events and activities

Tuscan city of Siena carries on age-old trading and holds bareback horse race twice a year. The race takes place in the city’s Piazza del Campo and lasts for about 90 seconds. It is indeed a unique experience to be there and feel the excitement. Participate in the colorful parade of the Corteo Storico which celebrates the customs, history, and power of Siena. You can visit Umbria for harvesting truffle and enjoy those truffles, also known as the black diamonds of the earth. Milan is the place to be during the Fashion Week and to enjoy the glamour at its finest. Get an elegant dining experience and dine like Hemingway on the island of Torcello. Going to Torcello is like visiting the haunt of artists, musicians, writers, royals, and dignitaries. You can take a guided ghost tour to discover Venice’s other haunts at dusk and enter an era of mystery and mayhem.

My ETEEAP Journey (My Experience in Summary)

Holidays make me write, and because I am so excited to put this story into writing and finally share to those who need motivation, let me fulfill this long overdue post about my Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency and Accreditation Program (ETEEAP) Experience.

For the past months after publishing my first entry about my ETEEAP Journey I already got a lot of feedback and questions pertaining to the program and its requirements. These questions range from very high-level scenarios to specific technical requirements and every time I get a message with these questions it makes me feel happy knowing that this blog can inspire readers beyond traveling. To date, I am trying my best to help by answering questions but as much as I wanted to cover them all for good, I simply can’t because policies and requirements may vary per school and courses.

What I can offer though is a brief summary of what I’ve gone through, from here maybe you can get an idea of how you can create yours. For the specifics, find the time and do your research, call the school of your choice and make these things be a part of your journey because it all starts here.

2012: Learning about ETEEAP

- I stumbled upon ETEEAP while searching for an alternative education program
- Upon learning about it, I did all the research and necessary readings to start. Below are some helpful links:

Personal Documents (NSO Birth Certificate, Government issued ID…)
School Documents (HS Diploma, TOR…)
Employment Documents (COE, ITR, Compilation of Job Description…)
Certificates (Certificate of participation and/or attendance to workshops and training)
Certificate of proficiency (There’s no specified format for this but any certificate that will prove your proficiency in a specific discipline, like PMI Certificate for Project management or LSSYB Certificate for process improvement. I got mine in a letter type format that states all the proficiency needed to fulfill my role and had our HR head, Department Head, and my manager signed it)
Awards (Employee Loyalty award, kudos cards…)

2013: Finding my School

- I first submitted my application to one of the colleges in Metro Manila, I’ve met with their ETEEAP Coordinator to personally discuss how the program works at their college. However, the program wasn’t that popular and I have to wait for a number of applicants before I could proceed. Time is gold, so I looked for another school.

- Manuel S. Vergara University was on top of my list but I decided not to pursue due to its accessibility

- I contacted Lyceum of the Philippines University and spoke with Ms. Rochelle Raymundo, she’s heaven sent, she screened the soft copy of my requirements and invited me for the nearest scheduled Panel interview which was two days from the time I contacted them. Board screening cost me Php5,000.00 non-refundable fee (Please check with LPU for updated Rate).

It’s getting late but I am not yet sleepy, currently counting days to my graduation. Just earlier I had my graduation pictorial and just cleared almost 95% of my requirements and I am definitely on my way to it. The feeling is surreal, I can’t imagine how long the journey was and I am finally marching this May, I am still hyper and overwhelmed right now so let me use my energy to create something that might be very useful and a life changer to some.

This is going to be long, but if you want to finish your school without leaving your job or sacrificing all the time that was left to you after your work then bear with me, this article is for you.

Four years back, I called my uncle who was a Professor and told him that I want a diploma but I don’t have time to go back to college and got limited savings for it, he told me that my only way was to go back to school. Now, I have some money in my pocket but literally don’t have time, so I thought there must be some way for professionals to finish their studies without going through all the regular students’ work.

I started searching for Open Universities and alternative education program but nothing fits what exactly I am looking for. I can’t commit to open universities because of the demanding nature of my work plus it can get too expensive and there will be too many subjects which will take longer to finish for someone who doesn’t have the luxury of time.

(You might think I am looking for a shortcut, which is kind of true but I’d say that the best word for it is “perfect alternative” because I am supporting my family and my siblings’ schooling, I also wanted to work on my career path and growth, while at the same time juggling all my musings like maintaining this blog, taking care of my travel bug bite and my much-needed photo walks and sartorial gigs from time to time.)

It took me a while of researching about school programs before I stumbled upon Expanded Tertiary Education Equivalency and Acceleration Program (ETEEAP).

What is ETEEAP?

Ang sagot sa mga gustong makapagtapos ng pagaaral pero walang sapat na time, dahil may work, family, friends, aura at lovelife :). At para sa mga na reject sa work at promotion dahil hindi degree holder. Char lang pero totoo!

On a serious note, “The ETEEAP is a comprehensive educational assessment program at the tertiary level that recognizes, accredits and give equivalencies to knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values gained by individuals from relevant work. It is implemented through deputized higher education institutions that shall award the appropriate college degree.

Beneficiaries must be Filipinos who are at least high school graduates. They must have worked for at least five years in the field or industry related to the academic program they are obtaining an equivalency. They must also be able to show proof of proficiency, capability and thorough knowledge in the field applied for equivalency.” CHED.GOV.PH

To clarify further, para po ito sa mga mangagawang pinoy na meron nang hindi baba sa limang taon na experience sa kanilang kasalukuyang profession at gustong matapos ang kanilang pagaaral.

Layunin nito na ikonsidera ang mga experiences at learnings na nakuha mo sa trabaho para macredit ka sa mga subjects na katumbas nito sa paaralan, sa ganitong paraan hindi mo na kailangan kunin lahat ng subject na inaapply mo naman na sa trabaho mo ngayon. Ibig sabihin mas experienced ka mas konti ang subjects pero syempre kelangan me katibayan lahat ng experiences mo.

Why I think ETEEAP is the perfect alternative I have been looking for?

First, 80% self-paced education mode to, ibig sabihin ikaw ang may hawak ng iyong oras – pag sinipag ka edi mabilis, pero wala naman masyadong time eh di chill lang me school ka na babalikan. Pero syempre limitado ito ng mga timelines like deadline of completing a subject and university residency.

Second, hangga't kaya mo patunayan na bihasa ka na sa isang field of professional study, maari itong ma-accredit sa time ng evaluation – kaya more experience and proof of proficiency, more fun . Pero hindi sakop ng rules na ito ang General Education na required ni CHED. So kung ilan ang kulang mo sa General Education kelangan mo talaga kunin lahat yun ng walang excemption.

Halimbawa ng Professional subjects or study equivalency and accreditation:

Kung limang taon ka na Manager o Supervisor, maaring maacredit si Fundamentals of Management mo at mga subject na may similar requirements.
Ako na nagtatrabaho sa linya ng quality and process improvement at merong mga patunay ng application and studies ukol sa Quality and Productivity accredited din yun.

Halimbaya ng General Education Subjects: Math, English, and Science

Third, hindi ito gaya ng Open University na kelangan mo bayaran ang buong klase sakaling ikaw lang magisa ang nag-enroll at gusto mo na magsimula na agad, ganyan kasi ang madalas na patakaran dati sa mga schools na napagtanungan ko tungkol sa Open University, update nyo ako kung iba na ang rules ngayon.

Fourth, this is mostly online, sariling kayod, hindi kailangan laging nasa school, pwede sa bahay o di kaya sa internet shop kaya perfect sa mga naghahanap buhay at may pamilya. But wait, major quizzes and examination are conducted in the school with your professor, you will have the same sets of exams like those of the regular students. Google can be helpful only if you use it para maintindihan mo ng maigi ang lessons.

How ETEEAP favored my personal life my career and my dream degree?

- With ETEEAP, nakapag-aral ako ng hindi nagreresign sa trabaho

- I was able to build my career path, napromote pa ako ilang beses habang nagaaral

- At dahil may trabaho ako, nagagampanan ko parin ang tungkulin ko sa pamilya ko bilang panganay na anak at katuwang ng aking nanay, eto kasi ang dahilan kaya hindi option sa akin ang scholarship dati since it will require you to focus on your studies and most of the scholarships will restrict you from having a job.

- Nakakapag enroll ako kung kelan ako maluwag, at maayos naman na natutugunan ng aking mga teachers ang aking tanong at pangangailangan

- Nagagawa ko parin ang mga bagay na gusto ko gaya ng mga nabanggit ko sa taas, nakakapag blog, nakakapag photo gig, nakakapanahi, nakakasideline, may time chumika sa friends, me time sa pamilya at yay! may time sa pag-ibig (char!)

My words to all ETEEAP aspirants and those who are planning to finish their studies:

“Believe and you are halfway there” is not a cliché for no reasons at all. I started with only one thing - the belief that I can finish my studies.

Recognize the need – many will tell you di naman kailangan graduate ka, o mas maganda parin mag negosyo and I believe in them, but not everyone eh kaya mag negosyo o di kaya hindi lahat gifted na gifted na kahit sino pipikitan ang educational background mo. Marami sa atin eh kailangan mag trabaho, matuto at umangat sa posisyon para matugunan ang ating pangangailangan and that is the reality that we have to deal with, at para magawa mo yan most of the time you have to have that degree. This is something I am sure na marami ang nakakarelate.

I have once been rejected for a job na experienced na ako just because I haven't finished college. Ang saklap beshie! Kaya I am sharing this because I've been getting a lot of questions about it and it made me think that many might be very interested on earning their degrees and it is just a matter of knowing that such alternative exists.

Eight years ago, we booked our first random trip together as a friend. We enjoyed the company of each other so much so it was followed by countless of weekend getaways. One time, we took a bus, then pay for the furthest route we think we can go to, then impulsively alight at a beautiful coastline. Since then, we became both obsessed with the idea of a free flowing trip.

So, what's the best way to celebrate the heart's day with your partner who’s also into getting lost somewhere far and unfamiliar than a spontaneous backpacking trip?

I can imagine filing a leave, packing our backpack and hopping on a bus.

Alighting at a beautiful coastline randomly, and if there are boats available to take us to somewhere, then maybe we can take some ride to an island we haven’t been.

There, we are going to spend the day lounging under the sun, listening to the sound of waves and feeling the wind.

We will spend the night with a cold beer, good old music like it is always Sunday (The Beatles and Air Supply playing) and some local dishes.

The next morning we can choose to leave or stay. And if we leave, I wish we still have a few days to hop to another place and go a little further.

We might get a little lost, but no worries, I should be able to google this up and do a quick search to find a place to go or stay and then we will spend another day, taking pictures, talking about life and what have you. All this of course aren’t possible without a good gadget and we'll definitely want to have an OPPO F1s Selfie Expert with us.

Weekender: Staycation at Microtel by Wyndham Mall of Asia

Last month (December) we celebrated our Christmas party at the SMC Convention Center in SM Mall of Asia, the location is far from home which makes a worthy excuse for a staycation.

We’ve seen few nice and interesting place to stay around, mostly from AirBnb and others were from the hotels around. However, considering the distance from the venue and the budget we decided to stay at Microtel by Wyndham Mall of Asia.

What’s good about it is that, its five-minute walk close from the venue, the rate is somehow high compared to AirBnb’s accommodations but the sea side view compensates the cost, not to mention my peg window view of MOA’s Eye.

It was around 12:30PM when we arrived at the hotel and like what I’ve always shared, I love hotels who let us check-in earlier whenever there’s an available room set. I also asked if we can request for the view with MOA’s Eye and it was granted. So nice of their accommodating staff.

The Room

Upon arriving at the lobby, I was impressed by the little but well-furnished and properly maintained place they have. Up in the room, it was furnished with basic features we need for a relaxing stay. A TV with cable, fridge, towels, hot and cold bath, toiletries, complementary bottled water, water heater (very important for my morning coffee), dresser, volt, slippers and a nice window seat.

Apparently, I don't have a decent photo to the entire room but I have these decent window selfie though. >,< When selfies and OOTD is life and when your mask is a DIY , you know. Check out my previous post if you like it - DIY: Masquerade Ball Mask in four easy steps.

The 12th floor

Another thing that excites me about this staycation was the rooftop pool and view, it looks pretty inviting in the pictures and I just wanted experience it firsthand. At first, the area looks small, but later you will realize that’s is just enough for the size of the hotel. I love how they were able to keep it clean and tidy which makes more refreshing and photo-perfect. I can just lounge here all day enjoying my reads and some drinks, then watching sunset.

For Improvements

If there is something I wish they can improve more is the lighting, the lights at the room were all too dim and warm, it may looks cozy at first but sometime you just need your room well lit (Am I the only one on this?). Another, is the air-conditioning unit, the one we have in our room is a bit noisy that it disturbs our sleep from time to time. Apart from that, everything went well. We had a pleasant rest and had a wonderful staycation, a much needed break in the midst of busy holiday season.

DIY: Masquerade Ball Mask in four easy steps.

Masquerade Ball is a 15th century feature of Carnival seasons, then extended into a public costume public festivities in Italy. Carnival of Venice is one of the famous festival known for its elaborate mask.

I have always dreamed of attending the Carnival of Venice, reading about the preparation and the grand costumes on the day of the event gives me goosebumps. However, dreams like that are far fetched. The good thing is that masquerade themed parties are very common these days, especially during holiday seasons, no wonder why this theme won the vote of most employees for our Company year end party.

Having this theme, I’ve made sure to prepare my mask, of course this is one of the most important part of the outfit. I skipped buying some ready to use one and opted to do the DIY mask using an old one I had in my closet.

So, if you are looking for ideas how to pimp some old mask this post is for you!

What you need?

1. A plane mask

2. Plastic Flowers (you may substitute this with any décor you want)
3. Glue gun
4. Stick glue
5. Glue
6. Scissor
7. Glitters (Optional)
8. LED light (for the crazy ones haha)

How to do it? It is as easy as 1,2,3:

1. Cut the flowers and start attaching on your mask using stick glue.

2. Continue until desired effect is achieved.

3. Add some glitters to polish the look

You may stop from here. But if you wanted to be extra daring and different you may look for LED lights, I got mine in one of the floral crown sold in SM Department Store.

4. I removed it from the floral crown and attached it in my mask.

My ma-ARTeng weekend at Pinto Art Museum

We’ve been hearing much about the Pinto Art Museum and its picturesque set-up, we even scheduled a visit here for a photoshoot which ended up in Pampanga.

Last weekend though, having nothing to do after lunch, we decided to go straight to Pinto Art Museum from SM East Ortigas. We took a van going to Antipolo and ask the driver to drop us at the Ynares Sports Arena (Fare:Php30.00) and then hailed a tricycle to the museum for Php60.00.

The travel time is around 20-30 minutes from SM East Ortigas to Ynares then 10-15minutes from Ynares to Pinto Art Museum. We were dropped at the entrance of the museum where all the private vehicles of other guest were parked and proceed to the entrance gate then fall in line. Entrance fee is Php200.00 for regular visitors, Php180.00 for senior citizens and Php100 for student with ID while children 3 years old and below are free. Then, with the map and guide on hand from the registration area, off we start our Artistic tour.

Overwhelmed by both the crowd and the visual treats, I got busy on concentrating and enjoying the museum’s collection and forgot to take a lot of pictures considering the numbers of picture-worthy spots.

The Mediterranean-inspired architectural design was nothing short of visual playground, the white-washed wall, wooden doors, gardens, brick wall, all crafted carefully to register in the photo like it was taken by a pro even by just simply pointing and shot.

The entire place is spacious with bits of something that will stir your imagination or inspire you which by the way helped us since we seriously need this after losing our mojo on a lot of things that we enjoy doing before after being so busy at work for almost a year now.

We roamed around spontaneously and though there were crowd everywhere, some arts are just too beautiful to miss. Some of these are the contemporary Filipino arts.

Having to love fashion and clothing, I can’t surely miss the amazement of getting a close encounter to some of the oldest materials from our natives.

We’ve gone to all of their galleries and was visually full after an hour. A very promising collection of painting from various local artists, which make me wish I could at least create a piece that will be worthy of a space in one of their galleries. I especially love the Indigenous Art gallery where they showcase the Philippines ethnic arts, from accessories, clothing, condiments and eccentric wood carvings.

We also went and had a quick look at their exhibit of paintings and mural arts, but never had the opportunity to indulge it due to the crowd, that typical expectations vs. reality seen. But not complaining though, thinking that the impressive number of visitors is a good indication of an opportunity to educate and allow people to appreciate the value of Philippine Art and Culture.

After a tiring tour, we thought of dining to one of their two café’s inside which both have a very cozy setting and mouth-watering menu, unfortunately both café were full and I was already hungry so instead of dining here, we went out for a snack.

The overall experience was worth it, I might go back there during weekdays and experience the rustic Pinto Café or Cafe Tan-Aw. The place is very picturesque and which is why almost everyone including myself was drawn to how charming it is that around 60% of the crowd were only there to take photos which sometimes of course can distract those who wanted to enjoy the collection. There were also few opportunities to improve as well, one thing is the missing labels, ensure their staff are equipped with the basic information that they can use to help spread awareness about the displays, crowd control – there was so much crowd to the point that it makes it almost impossible to impose some rules like the “no flash photography” and “do not touch the arts” which are very important if they truly wanted to preserve their collections. But to be fair, this is something that I wish visitor can manage as well by being responsible enough in reading and following guidelines.

Pinto Art Museum is located at 1 Sierra Madre St. Grand Heights, Antipolo, Rizal. The museum is open from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM from Tuesday to Sunday.

2016: A summary

Catch up time guys! I only posted a few entries for this year and I thought it would be easier to summarize it to wrap-up 2016.

Reflecting back to what I have done and achieved for this year convinced me that I have already grown a bit into a more mature being haha. This year, tested my patience and strengths to its highest point, and indeed, you will never know what you are capable of until you lose a choice.

Much like travelling, tough times weaken our knees and exhaust our body, but the daring thought of fulfilling our goals and exploration to something different and something new fuels our heart and challenges our brain. Then instead of stopping, we came up more eager and way stronger.

This year might be one of the toughest I had as an adult but I am definitely ending this year strong with a stable job and endless learning opportunity. I am 80% with my schooling, this is something I worked hard this last quarter and I am moving five times faster than before. I am also progressing my career path and building my skills and knowledge around project management and process improvement. I will be celebrating my Christmas and welcoming the 2017 with my sisters and our closest friends at our new place.

I haven’t plotted a travel for next year. I wish to finish school first and gain more skills to accelerate my career growth. However, being the exact same person in my auto-biography, I will still take all the opportunities to explore on new sights and places, perhaps by accepting photography gigs that allows me to go out of town and practice photography while earning instead of spending.

Romantic Transfiguration Chapel of Caleruega - an inspiration

Everyone has their own sets of inspirations, and it’s nice to see how people could come up into something great and amazing out of it.

When I first had my class in fashion school, our first task was to create a mood board. Then we were taught about the techniques for selecting and using something to stimulate you to start creating a masterpiece.

Back then, I already knew that bridal gowns are my favorite, but I don’t have a lot to inspire me other than the trend and my bride’s liking. However, soon after the first wedding gown I've made I found something that I never thought would draw so much desire to create bridal gowns in the future. And, that inspiration are churches.

For some reasons, my travel musings would always include visiting churches. For example, I wanted to visit Spain and Italy, mainly because I wanted to see Basílica de la Sagrada Família and Domo Milano. I am stirred with the church’s facades, interior and ambiance that imagining my work worn on a wedding in those churches could give me some goosebumps.So whenever I found a beautiful church the first thing that will come to my mind is a wedding in that church with a bride wearing my piece.

In the Philippines, I am inspired by numbers of churches from different places, like the gothic century church called San Sebastian Basilica in Manila and the historical Santo Tomas de Villanueva Parish Church in Miagao, Iloilo.

Last year, I was able to cross out Calaruega Chapel from my list of what I call “churchspiration”. Thank you to my friend for entrusting her wedding gown to me, it was a huge pleasure.

Caleruega Transfiguration Chapel or commonly called as Caleruega Church is famous for its charming view and romantic façade, this church is also in the list of most romantic churches in the Philippines. It is situated two hours away from Metro Manila and is one of the top wedding venue of choice for the couples around the province and neighboring locale hence booking this chapel for your wedding may require a year advance reservation.

Climbing the chapel from the entrance requires some steady knees as there’s a quite a number of stairs to pass, I was carried away by the view that time that I haven’t noticed how many flights it took me to get there. It’s as romantic & intimate as how it looks like in many of the photos you’ll see on the web. My first glance was pretty amazing, the cold weather, the pines and the romantic afternoon sunlight illuminating the entire place with shades of gold. I felt I too was getting married that day ha-ha.

Dream come true indeed, a perfect runway for a piece that deprived me of long decent sleep and rest days for three months. Seeing my muses walk down its aisle that was decorated with beautiful flowers and brighten by the warm smile of the bride and groom’s family is all I can ask for. At the end, it is excessively worth all the efforts.

It’s been nearly seven months since I had my regular 9-6 job and I am still adapting to the sleeping time and the daytime rush that I have to deal with every day.

Sometimes, I wish that going to and from work during the day is as easy as the night travels, but it’s just not it and I guess it will never be. The extended travel time and rush hours exhaust me to bits and since then, it has reduced my time to do some other things.

One trouble that I have was finding time to buy some things that I need and I want, especially those small things that we often miss. In my case, those are lipsticks and other makeup related stuff – not that they are forgettable, it’s just that I am not much into them. I simply get lazy by the thought of going through all the cosmetic stores at the mall to pick small piece of makeup.

Hate it or love it, I need some colors on my face. I always believe in the importance of not only acting but also dressing & looking the part.

Last quarter of 2015, I was invited to be part of my college friend’s wedding. This is the first time that I am not only making the bridal gown for the bride, but would also do my own gown as a bridesmaid and my college best friend’s dress who is the Maid of Honor.

The wedding's motif was red and I've been loving this daring color for quite sometimes now making the designing part more exciting. Just imagine, I’ll be designing my gown in my favorite color.

For myself, I created a lavish fishtail or mermaid cut gown that fits my sensual personality. The upper part is made of lace while I crafted the bottom with metallic tulle.

Fishtail dress is way more challenging than I though it took me several adjustments before I was able to get the fit so I find the experience as a very good opportunity for me to practice. Apart from that, I also tried to do a corset typed top for the first time, it didn't turn out to be exceptionally good but I think it wasn’t that bad for a first timer. :)

For the Made of Honor, instead of settling to a common all red entourage, we peek a Champagne gown for her. It may look skin-tone in the photo depending on the screen resolution but it has a very soft reddish shade in actual.

I am a big fan of chiffon and see-though so I am personally in love with how the skirt flow and shows some skin while keeping the conservative look. My friend made me giddier when she walks with it happily and feeling gorgeous.

It’s been quite a while now since I started to take this hobby slowly higher and I am very much humbled and honored by all the support I am getting from them. I am beyond thankful to the universe for the blessings of friendship.

Burot Beach, Calatagan Batangas

Burot Beach is one of the most accessible beaches you could go to from Metro Manila. It took us about four hours to get there due to heavy traffic in Dasmariñas Cavite and a stop at Tagaytay where we took our lunch.

Past 1PM when we arrived at the entrance gate, we stopped at the guard house and our driver paid for something, we also signed a waiver affirming the full responsibility of our safety as we enter the premises. Then another few minutes to the shore, it was a very remote and quiet route that it made me think of an exciting day having a beach all for ourselves which was easily changed by the sight of the crowds as we arrived the site.

Right after settling our things in one of the bamboo cottages, I went around and took a stroll. It was a warm weekend and the salty wind makes me feel like its summer in early December. Burot beach is a beautiful place with wide shoreline where you could spend a relaxing dip or sunbathing. After a long and tiring day, you can indulge yourself with a good chat or perhaps a cold beer while enjoying the splendid sunset. Burot beach is facing west, hence its always a good place for sunset chasers like me.

I love the place, but I hate the crowd – the irresponsible ones. There were a lot of garbage that ruins the place, the bathrooms (mind me, it’s the girls bathrooms) are cluttered with mess, bowl has unflushed s**t and sanitary napkins were at every corner. I would like to think that I am just being “maarte”, but no, I guess not. I don’t mind sleeping in the most basic accommodation or bathing in a bamboo bathroom, it’s the kind of life that I have grown up with in the province. What I hate about are the those travelers that chase beauty and then ruin it. It was sad, I hope people who plans to travel should learn how take care of their own garbage first prior to hitting the road.

While my friend always refer their place as Marbel, google always return the name Koronadal City in all my searches. I too had some confusions about the two names worrying that I might have booked at the wrong place, thanks to some good sources. Both name refers to one City, in the past locals called the poblacion as Marbel from the B’laan word “Marb-EL” that means murky waters which refer to a river now named Marbel River; while Koronadal is believed to have originated from two B’laan words that natives used to describe their place, these words are “Koron” means Cogon grass and “Nadal” meaning plain.

Koronadal City has surprisingly good number of accommodations to choose from, we originally plan to stay at FB Hotel but they were booked for a cultural event on the same date of our trip so off we checked for another place. Greenstate Suites was from a friend’s suggestion, she mentioned that it was clean and reasonably priced which we’ve discovered true.

We only planned to stay here for one day but felt really comfortable that we extend until the second night. Price per night is at 750.00PHP for an air-conditioned double room with Hot and Cold shower. The room is furnished with luggage compartment with a small space where you could hung your clothes, towel, water, toiletries, mirror, intercom, WIFI and LCD Cable TV.

The place as you can see in the photo looks very tidy and well maintained. Mattresses are clean and amenities are fully functional. More to that are their very friendly and accommodating staff. Two thumbs up to this praiseworthy place which made our Koronodal City experience awesome.

Hello all lakwacheras!!! It’s been a while, yeah? Just wanted to drop by to express how I miss this blog. I wish I could write down my year ender obligatory post but it was such a busy month, way busier than my previous Decembers.

I am finishing an entourage for a Caleruega wedding this 29th, it's something that I wished for and it came earlier than I expected, so I am burning all my energy for it right now. Plus, just left the company that I worked with for more than six years and here I am humbled by my new job with a new company.

My 2015 evolves around building long term goals and a few trips which I wish I could share next year. For now, I’d like to thank you all for the continuous visit. Got a few but very valuable message asking for updates and new stories and those mean so much for me. I love sharing more than writing so I hope I could get those mojo back soon.

I have less travel plans for next year and have less books in line to read. I have to set priority so I could afford more travels and more books to read soon. Slowing down doesn't always mean that I am about to stop, sometimes it just means that I am preparing for a stronger launch.

Simala Shrine and Basdaku Beach Moalboal DIY Day Trip.

We woke up early and had some coffee before leaving the city at six in the morning. We headed to E-mall where we could catch a V-hire to Sibonga. V-hire is the term Cebuano use to refer a passenger van. The terminal is at the back of a Gas station in front of E-mall. No signs whatsoever, but there were barkers around which will direct you to the location of the van. The first trip left full as early as 6:30AM. We were able to catch the next van which immediately gets filled after 30 minutes. Our van left the City at around 7:00AM and we arrived in Simala Shrine at 7:30AM. 30 minutes early for the opening.

I was surprised about the travel time as some travel guide would show a one hour and 30 minute travel time from Southbus terminal and another 20-30 minutes habal-habal ride to the shrine. I guess the advantage of v-hire is that it’s a direct ride to Simala Shrine and it does not have a lot of pit stops to pick up or drop off passengers which takes a lot of time. Apart from that, it also eliminates the need to hire a habal-habal. One way fare is 100.00Php, I am not sure if they're operation is legal, but it seems that they are very common to local commuters and I was thankful for my cousin's suggestion that made us aware of this option.

If you wanted however to take the tourist's suggested way of commuting to Simala you need to go to the Southbus terminal and take the bus that passes by Simala. The fare according to my research is 70.00Php. Ask the conductor to drop you off at motorcycle terminal where to can take a habal-habal ride to the temple, the fare is 20 and travel time based on experience is 15-20 minutes.

Simala Shrine may take 30-40 minutes for you to stroll around then another hour if you plan to attend the mass. Note that the church has a lot of visitors during weekends and most especially during Sundays. Crowded maybe, but the discipline was there, it was serene and was very organized.

We left Simala at 10am and took a habal-habal back to the highway. We were heading back to Carcar to buy some Chicharon.

Chicharong Carcar is also a famous pasalubong that you can buy from Cebu, it is so crispy and still has some meat with it. It is such a "putok-batok" delicacy.

From Carcar rotonda we were directed by the locals to where we could catch a bus to Moalboal. Bus stops a few meters away from the chicharon store. We've waited around 30minutes before a Ceres bus stopped and off we board. The bus was full which, according to some locals is normal for this route.

We were standing on the bus for around 45minutes - maybe less but it feels that long before we're able to get a seat. There were a lot of passengers that alighted at Barili, so maybe, just maybe it can be strategic to take a multicab going here, then take a bus to Moalboal if you’re into commuting and don't want to stand for too long.

Travel time took around an hour and 30 minutes. We alighted the bus in front of Moalboal G-mall where we ate our lunch and bought some chips and water that we can take to the beach.

From the front of the mall there were tricycles you can hire going to the beach. There were I guess three beaches they mentioned - Basdaku, Panagsama, and the other one which I forgot the name. We opted to go to Basdaku because of the absence of white sand in Panagsama while the other is a place I just heard that time. The fare to Basdaku was 150.00 per tricycle and travel time is around 20-30 minutes.

Going back, we asked the driver to fetch us at the resort where he dropped us at exactly 5PM so we could catch a bus back to the city before 6PM which according to the local was the last trip of most buses from the area. A local whom I've spoken to while on the bus told me that there were also v-hire from there, but they weren't servicing that time on the terminal so we took the bus.

Travel time to the city took us 48years to travel :) just kidding! It was four hours due to the heavy traffic. The bus we caught was full yet, we boarded with the expectation that we can get a seat after a few stops which was entirely wrong. My uncle and I ended up standing until we reached Talisay - that was three hours of standing on a non-air-conditioned bus! A hell-of-a-ride and commuting-at-its-finest.

Finally, we reached the city at around 9:30PM, all dead tired, we went home to drop our things and went back out for dinner. We all thought that we had a good adventure that day and deserved a dinner treat since we were veraciously hungry, we dined at AA's BBQ place in Lahug per my cousin's suggestion. Their place was nice and has a good short order menu, you can also pick some fresh meat and seafood and asked them to cook it for you with your desired dish. Waiting time was okay for a hungry tummy and we were all happy with the food, it was delicious and fairly priced. Dinner solved :)

To sum up, Simala and Moalboal trip in one day is very tiring yet exciting one. It was very quick and short beach experience though, but if you are time constrained, then I guess it's enough - we had enough of four hours swimming anyway. This is best too if you have your own car to cut save travel time and I do not recommend doing this with the elders.

CEBU 2015 - DIY Tour

On my previous post I've mentioned about travelling with my mom, aunt and grandmother to Cebu for a late mother's day celebration. The trip went alright except that my grandmother decided not to join us during the last minute. I bet it could be so much fun with her though. Despite that, I am still very thankful it went well.

The trip began with a very good lunch at CNT Lechon in Cebu before we headed to a relative's house where we stayed. We spent an hour there catching up while enjoying one of Cebu's famous dishes before heading to my Uncle's apartment where we stayed.

After fixing our things and a quick rest. At around one in the afternoon we hired a cab to Taoist Temple and enjoyed the exquisite scenery at the top. They were able to try the stone tossing ritual which is believed to have a predictive functionality. It is held in front of the altar where taking photos are restricted. Full instructions on how to do the ritual is provided at the same level where the activity is being held.

Note: Please observe silence and do not take photos in the area where it is being restricted to pay respect on their beliefs.

Shortly after the temple visit, we went to the City for a quick walking tour. We went first to Magellan's cross, but it was closed that day for renovation so we decided to just take the obligatory shot with the famous spot at the back. Then to Basilica del Sto. Niño which is a stone throw away from Magellan's cross.

Basilica del Santo Niño is the mother of all churches in the Philippines, it is the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the country founded in 1569. This is my second time here, first was last 2011 - couple of years before its bell tower collapsed from the earthquake. For the benefits of my mom and aunt, I made sure to have a saved image of the Basilica on my phone from my first visit. Good thing because the front part was almost entirely blocked by the constructions and repairs going on that time.

Moving on, we headed to St. Williams Cathedral, this is the pure white church a couple of blocks away from Basilica del Santo Niño. We walked straight passing Shamrock and Colon Street. From Colon Street we had a quick glance of the Heritage of Cebu Monument which was located a few meters away. I asked them if they wanted to visit Sandiego-Yap Ancestral which is also a minute walk from where we're at but they decided not to as they were already so excited to try the go-kart.

From Colon Street, we hired a cab to Cabahug St. I told the driver that we were heading to Kartzone but he seems unfamiliar of the place until I've mentioned the street name which reminded him of the racing area. I'll let you know the details of their go-karting experience on a separate post later.

Done with the go-karting adventure and some snacks at Cebu Karztone, we went back to Colon Street to check the night market. It starts at 6PM but I am not sure what time it closes. The market sells really cheap RTWs, you can also find some souvenirs sold cheaply like Cebu key chains and fridge magnets. The scene was nothing different from the ones you see in Divisoria and Ladies Market in Hongkong as I have experienced them except I guess for the volume of crowds.

After that, we took a jeepney to Fuente Osmena Circle where one of the Shamrock store is located. They wanted to shop for some delicacies that they can bring home before having dinner. After hoarding some otap, dried mangoes, barquillos and some that I forgot the name we had our dinner at the closest food chain - McDonald's.

It was a quick day, mom, aunt and my uncle-ninong had so much fun and awe moments. Lights off at 12 midnight for an early morning trip to Simala and Moalboal the next day.

How Last Minute Travelling works for a corporate employee like me.

I sometimes get asked how do I plan my trip and would always encounter a surprising reaction when told that I am now opting for last minute trips. I totally understand where the enchantment came from, we all know that planned trips are really cheaper because of huge discounted price airline companies’ offer for early bookings, but it doesn’t just work for me.

In our company, employees are entitled of a 12 days paid vacation leave and some unpaid ones depending on the availability, these leaves must be pre-approved. These pre-approved leaves can be applied two months prior to a minimum notice time of one week while the approval process may take up to one week. This means that you might need to wait for a month close to your desired travel date to be able to secure your vacation leave. That’s for the most of the company, especially those in the BPO Industry, a lot of us have really tight schedule and have almost no idea when we can have free time until the very last minute.

Most of the cheaper fares have the travel period of six months from the date of sale, which makes the risk higher for corporate employees like me. I’ve even experienced missing at least four flights due to declined leaves or conflict of schedules and priorities. Last cancelled flight I had was our flight to Coron, Palawan which was cancelled due to strict business needs. That flight was a promo flight which cost us 1,700.00PHP each. Apart from the flight ticket we’ve also spent some bucks for our hotel reservation, which was booked two months prior.

After that cancelled flight, I never booked any promo tickets yet for myself. What we do have is a list of places we can go; these include those places we can reach by land travels and those that needs air transports. I visualize a date and will have plan A (plane-ride away) and B (Bus-ride away).

When we get the budget, we can spend, we file our leaves and check plane tickets right after its approval then we start planning from there. Most of the time as I’ve noticed that promo seats are still available months prior to the travel dates unless its peak season (April-May and during holidays). The price is quite far if you are going to base it on the base fare, but the total amount are pretty much close (500.00-700.00 difference). For example a flight to Cebu for 699.00 seat sale six months ago may still have some available seats at 1,299.00 which has 600.00 difference per way and 1,200.00 for a two way ticket. Computing it with admin fees, other charges and tax would pretty much gives you the same difference because these charges were based on the original base fare and not the discounted ones.

So do I still love seat sales?? Of course, yes, I’d love it for my flights for holiday seasons and summer where fares could go extremely expensive, for some Weekender trips and planned international trips. Otherwise, I'd always go for the book-and-run way.

Here are some perks I enjoyed that make last minute travelling works for a corporate employee like me.

Money saver: I’d rather pay a thousand higher for a sure flight than pay twice for rebooking and worst just missing a paid ticket.

Stress free: There’s nothing more stressful than knowing that the leave you filed for your most awaited flight which you’ve purchased a year ago has been declined. Hong Kong trip with my sisters almost got cancelled weeks before our flight! :S

Flexibility – last minute backpacking gives you the flexibility to adjust based on current mood, cravings and or weather. Six months ago you may feel like going to the mountains and yet after that you realized that you became too busy and too tired to do so and all you want for that day is a relaxing time at the beach.The Plan – Climb Mt. Pulag. What actually happen – Lazed at the beach of Talipanan.

Room for discovery – since you don’t limit the planning on the places where there are cheap flights, you get to discover places near you which are most of the times are really exciting and surprising. My Daranak Falls and Calinawan Cave adventure was literally a last minute trip.

No Panic Booking – not sure for the others, but I know a lot who’ve reaped their credits on panic booking. Although this is very exciting and favorable for the rich-kids and those digital nomads, this could be extremely problematic for most of the regular corporate employees as your trips will always require budget, it will mean unplanned and impulsive spending after another.

Cheaper and Fancier Accommodations – huge discounts are not only offered for early birds as sometime even bigger ones are given for the last minute deals which can go as far as 60% off.

To sum it up, things that are economical for you today could be something that is extremely unpractical in a few months or so after considering the risks and obstacle. If you feel that you can make the trip scheduled months away, then it won’t hurt to grab those price promotions but if you fall under the group of busy people with very tight and unpredictable schedule then don’t hold back on deciding to go traveling on the last couple of days. ;)
