To be honest: This is one of the few times when I got curious from a promotion email I got.

Usually I get one or two of those per day as I want to see what all the IM “Gurus” (what a silly word…) are promoting. I rarely buy one of those products as I don’t like the hype that comes along. And usually I don’t think they come at a price that can be justified…

But today I am going to test Andrew Fox’s “Nuclear Affiliate” – Maybe the good price point convinced me (I first did not want to buy, but when I closed the page I was graciously offered a $10 discount as “one of only 5 customers” – wow, maybe you are as lucky as I was, I reckon 5 can be stretched a little bit )

If the system convinces me, I will write a report here…

Article marketing Callen Style

If you have been following my blog for a while you probably know about the products Jon Leger creates for Linkbuilding .
Today I signed up for a new service by Bryxen Software, which you may know for products like SEOElite or KeywordElite.
Now Brad Callen has come up with a new product that at the first glance looked very much like 1waylinks.

It is called SEO Link Vine and and like 1waylinks is a blog network where you can submit articles that will be posted all over the network.

If you buy now, even the price is the same. As having another weapon in my link building arsenal was something I could not say no to, I decided to sign up and write about my experience here.

The buying process:

I know it is a clever idea to offer upsells and I have no doubt that the SEO product upsell is a good product – but having to scroll down long pages two times just to skip the offer is getting on my nerves…

The looks:

The over all design of the site is better than 1waylinks, it has a very straight user interface and is easy to use from the beginning.

Instructions/manuals:

There are excellent video instructions on every step. Did not miss anything.

Built in functions:

Now here it gets really interesting:

Not only has it a built in spinning function, but also a ranking checker with backlinks count and PR.

Quota:

There is none – you can submit as many articles as you want and they will get posted on as many blogs as will accept your article.

Where will my articles be posted:

The deal is that SEO Link Vine brings together blogs that need fresh content and users who will write content with their links embedded.

Your article will only be poted on blogs that accept your content category and blog owners can accept or decline articles.

Those are the main differences to 1waylinks. There are a few negative sides to mention, too. For example you cannot use spinning in the title but have to add every title variation manually. Don’t ask my why what works in the article body should not be good enough for the title…

Another thing is the Thesaurus of the spinning tool. It worlds away from the quality I am used to with Jon Leger’s The Best Spinner! It is nice that there is a spinner built in, but I prefer to keep using the Best Spinner – and here is the good news: SEO Link Vine is compatible with a whole bunch of spinning formats so I can just copy and paste the spun articles into SEO Link Vine.

Altogether this looks very good in my eyes – now it has to prove whether it will create the same quality of results as 1waylinks does.

An excellent and proven way to get backlinks is to write an article about your topic and publish it at article sites.
Most article sites allow you to put one or two links in the article and/or in your author bio box. Depending on the article site, your article may be picked up by other webmasters looking for content and be published on their websites. If you write good content, your articles might be republished at many other sites which can give you a decent amount of backlinks. If if your article doesn’t get picked up at all, you can still get quite a few backlinks just by submitting to several sites.

Now some article directories require you to write unique content and you may not reuse it on other directories.
Another thing is that logging in to all those sites and submitting your articles manually is time consuming. Lets say you have already written your article (which takes quite some time, too, if you do not outsource it), it will take you about ten minutes per article site.
For a lazy guy like me this meant looking for solutions – and I found some.

I wrote a lot about gaining backlinks by commenting on blogs, and I always warn people that if you use this technique for link building, you have to deleiver real value as otherwise you are nothing but a spammer.
So what – a few people might think, then I am a spammer as long as google does not notice I am fine with that.
My opinion on those: You are wasting other people’s time and most probably your own time, too.

If you have followed my blog for some time, you know that I am a big fan of Jonathan Leger’s link programs, (see my article Getting backlinks with the “Leger Backlink Family” for an overview on 3waylinks, 1waylinks and mywaylinks)
Now that does not mean that I am blind to everything else, in fact there are other excellent programs out there, too, and one of them is NeuroLinker:
Neurolinker has not only has become a serious rival to 3waylinks.net, it incorporates most of the functionality of many other SEO services, which makes it a one stop SEO solution.

When neurolinker started, it was basically the same as 3waylinks, but they constantly added very useful features, and by now neurolinker is something like 3waylinks combined with 1waylinks plus a social bookmarking service + article marketing.

Links from relevant sites
Neurolinker has an option to choose whether you want only backlinks from related sites. That will lead to much fewer backlinks, but you do not have to worry that you might get visitors from sites that don’t have anything to do with yours. There once was a category listing in 3waylinks, too, but is has no relevance.
If it is sheer quantity of backlinks that you are after, you can choose to get links from unrelated sites, too.
In 3waylinks there is no way to choose.

Deep links
In 3waylinks all links are links to your homepage. In neurolinker, you can create backlinks to any page on your website.
That is great for supporting inner pages of your site.

Number of Backlinks
Neurolinker states you get unlimited backlinks – of course that is only half the truth: The number of links is only limited by the number of members in the system, but it is definitely higher than with 3waylinks (250 backlinks per domain).

Amount of domains
3waylinks allows you to put up to 50 domains in the system – under certain circumstances, namely if you have domains with a PR of 4 or higher, you can put more than 50 domains in the system. Neurolinker has a quota of 100 domains from start…

Other Services
Neurolinker has a much broader portfolio of link types, they introduced an reciprocal social bookmarking service(digg and stumble). In Exchange to diggs and stumbles for your sites, you bookmark, digg and stumble other peoples sites…
Neurolinker also sports an article service. You can submit articles that will be published on other member websites – basically what 1waylinks does, too.

Now for all the extra functionality I would have expected a hefty price tag, but in fact neurolinker is even cheaper than 3waylinks.
Now if you asked me: Mike, do you abandon 3waylinks and use neurolinker instead?
My answer is easy: Of course not! 3waylinks is much too valuable to abandon it and contrary to neurolinker they accept my non english web sites, too. But neurolinker is far too powerful to ignore, so I use both, sometimes even for the same site, and what can I say: it is double the power than only one linking service

Which WordPress SEO Plugin should I choose?

The most often downloaded SEO plugin for WordPress probably is All-In-One-SEO.

A little less known, but in my eyes superior is Platinum SEO Pack . I decided on Platinum SEO for all my sites quite a while ago and while my information may be outdated today, I nevertheless want to share the reasons for my decision:

Platinum SEO and All in One SEO Pack look very similar at the first glance. That is because the author of Platinum SEO formerly used All in One SEO Pack, too, but then improved it because of missing features.

So why did I choose Platinum SEO over All in One SEO Pack? Personally I’ve chosen to make use of Platinum SEO for the following reasons:

1. There are some on-page optimization settings that are missing in AIOSP

2. It allows to set single pages to “noindex” and thus keeps SEs from indexing a website I don’t want listed.

3. Platinum SEO has a feature called “Automatically do 301 redirects for permalink changes”. Which means that you can change the permalink structure of your site if you want to optimize it and still older links to the old structure will not result in “404 page not found”

4. You can switch off the credit back link and are not pushed too hard to make a donation

If you’re already using All-in-one SEO, Platinum SEO has the ability to migrate all your current settings into it’s own setup, which comes very handy.

So a final thought, the key reason I changed was for the ability to set a single page as “nofollow” to hold google from indexing it. In addition to that they are both comparable, and may actually do equally good jobs at SEO.

If you like AIOSP better don’t worry – it will probably work just as fine for you as Platinum SEO does for me.

Getting backlinks with the “Leger Backlink Family”

When it comes to building links automatically or semi-automatically Jonathan Leger is the guy to look at.
When I first heard of him he just had developed a product called 3WayLinks.net.

With 3WayLinks.net. you get a minimum of 250 backlinks to your domain’s homepage with three keyphrases split 60%, 30% and 10% per website entered, for up to 50 websites. These links come from sites with all types of themes and relevancies, with a wide range of page ranks (PR, my highest incoming link is from a PR5 site, but I guess there might be pages with even higher PR in the system). Backlinks are all targeted at the website in general, not to inner pages. If your site is PR 4+, it doesn’t count in the quota, so you can actually have more than 50 domains.

It is quite easy to use if you are running wordpress, because you can then use the 3waylinks wordpress plugin I wrote.

With MyWaylinks.net you get to choose which sites send you backlinks. At least, you get to ask for, and generally get backlinks from sites of your choosing, with PR’s of at least 1. That means that your links are of high relevancy and higher PR (in general, compared to 3waylinks or 1waylinks).

You can direct these links to any website you choose, including subdomains and inner pages. Your links are not limited to the sites you submit and register with MyWaylinks.net. (Great for getting new sites indexed fast!)

You also control the sites to which you give backlinks. They apply, you review, then approve or reject.

3WayLinks.net is a more highly automated process; you set it and forget it, until you add another website. It is also more broad and less specific in its linking. You get a lot of links but of generally low to medium quality.

MyWaylinks.net requires more setup time in that you will need to search the database of participants to find sites that you would like to receive backlinks from. Once the links are set up there is no more to be done. At that point it is set and forget also. The same for backlinks you give to other sites. In fact, you do not have to give backlinks to anyone if you don’t want to. There is a marketplace among members where quota needed to “pay” for backlinks to your site can be bought and sold on a member-to-member auction bid basis.

Currently you get 25 quota points upon signup. Getting backlinks costs 1 quota point per PR point (PR 1 links cost you 1 quota point, Pr4 links cost you 4 quota points, etc.) You receive 3 quota points per PR point of your site. If someone asks for a link from your PR3 website and you accept, you get 3×3=9 quota points.

So far, this has proven to be very worthwhile. One good thing is that links get crawled quickly (since all sites registered are PR1 or higher) and you see results in 2-5 days. Another is that those links from relevant sites REALLY move you up the ranking scale fast in Google… It’s nice to see those large jumps!

O.k. now we have covered the oldest child of the Leger Backlink Family(3WayLinks.net) and the youngest (MyWaylinks.net) – but there are two more:

There is DirLinks.net, which is actually some sort of completely different looking twin of 3WayLinks.net, that means it is part of the package.

It creates a directory with links to up to 1000 of the participating sites, again in a 3waylinks style. It gives you more links than 3waylinks and allows for links to inner pages – so it is the perfect addition to 3waylinks although it lives a little bit under the shadow of 3WL.

And last but not least, there is 1WayLinks.net:

A system that allows to post up to 250 blog articles with 3 in content links each, has the capability of spinning text and links and that makes it the most versatile tool Jon has ever created. For every new helper blog you add to the system you get an additional 50 post each month. That makes it an endless supply of high quality links. You can point your links to any site you like (given it adheres to the somewhat strict content rules of all Leger systems)

1WayLinks.net has become one of my main work horses because of it’s reliability and and endless supply of quality links!

In summary:

3WL – 240 or so basic links per website entered, up to 50 websites.
MWL- high quality links on a link exchange basis
1WL – Lots and lots of low quality links. Great for Google, Yahoo not so much.
DirLinks - Lots of links of med. to low quality. Works well as “Steroids” for 3WL; kicks backlink counts way up beyond 3WL’s 250 or so count.

So if you you are looking to expand your linking efforts, have a look at one of these – or do it like I do and use all of them in the field where each of them has it’s specific strengths.

Marketing on Social Media Sites For The Nay Sayers

The other day, I was reading some internet marketing blogs. I came across a few different blog posts about social networking on myspace and facebook. This is usually nothing to write home about but in these posts, the author was saying that these don’t work.

It just so happens, one of these blog authors requested me as a friend on myspace. Again nothing new here except for the approach. This person (I will call him “Andrew”) introduced himself, claimed to be a member of one of the programs I speak of on my profile. Andrew wrote that he was a member of the company and didn’t make any money using the techniques. He then went on to say it was a scam.

What happened next blew my mind. After this bashing of the company (that I have been very successful with) He offered me another program!

I didn’t know “Andrew” from the man on the moon. He comes to my page, attacks the company I work with, and then expects me to join him… Wow. What a way to build trust.

I found out that he was the author of one of the blogs I spoke on earlier because of the links at the end of the message he sent me. I realized why he was unable to make any money.

Marketing on myspace or any other social network is quite simple.

First build a friend list in a specific niche by joining groups. Then add them to your friends. While on their profile READ IT. You can find out what they are into and what they are about. You don’t want to be on a network trying to promote affiliate programs to an affiliate marketer. They are doing the same thing you are, so chances are they will not buy from you. Unless you have something that is of value to them.
Second you have to socialize. What I mean by this is, find out what they are into, and get to know them. Do this to build trust. Write blogs about your niche and invite them to read them. Get them to a squeeze page with a link in the blog post. Make sure you offer value first program last.
Do not send messages to people about your business or affiliate program until you are sure your “friends” want them. The easiest way to do this is with a squeeze/capture page.
Make videos and post them to these sites. Put your affiliate links at the bottom of the video screen. There are even programs that allow you to put your link on other people videos. You can then put these videos in your blog post with in the networks.

That is all it takes. You can build a great income easily by networking, and offering value. That is really all it takes. I feel the reason these bloggers had issues making money on social networking sites is because they don’t know how to network or how to turn their “friends” into leads. They do not follow the steps outlined above.

What a shame!
Now I run a blog that is all about Do-Follow blogs and how to find Do-Follow blogs and I am not able to remove the Nofollow tag on my own blog!
Thanks to a hint from one of my readers, I finally noticed that the links on my blog were actually nofollow – wordpress’ standard…
What had happened? First I had the suspicion that a new version of the Platinum SEO plugin, which I can highly recommend, superseded the setting from my “Follow URL” plugin… but after some research I found out, that it was just an incompatibility issue with wordpress 2.7. I now use Nofollow Free as the plugin of choice and the problem is solved

Recurring traffic is in the list

Perhaps you know the old internet marketer’s saying: “The money is in the list.”

Well I would would go a little bit further and say “The key to recurring traffic is in the list”…

Of course, if you built a great site with fantastic content, chances are very good that someone actually bookmarked your site (if you are lucky then by using a social bookmark service, see my posts on Social Bookmarking). Or you are already making use of what I wrote on how to get commenters come back to your site.

Today I want to talk a little bit on the most powerful way to have people come back to your site (besides having valuable content, of course ) and that is building your own email list.

Technically all you need is an autoresponder (like AWeber, or GetResponse)

But this only covers the technical part of it. How do you adress your list? What do you have to do to get a highly responsive list? The key to this is trust. And a key part in building trust is honesty. One example: I could go around and boast and tell everyone that my list of do-follow blogs from the Blog Search is one of the biggest available. Then after a while people would come to me very angry and tell me that on my list there are blogs that actually are no-follow and I told them I had the biggest do-follow list. So what I am saying instead is that finding do-follow blogs is not so easy after al and that there are issues with the accuracy of the blog list…

Someone who you can a learn a lot from regarding list buidling is Josh Spaulding. He wrote an excellent report about buidling your email list. I bought his report (at that time for only 7$, I am not sure whether he had to raise the price…) and started to digest everything he wrote. Although I have not yet implemented everything on my own list, you bet I will. I think his report is worth at least 10 times what he charges for it, go and see for yourself, the price is only 7$. And don’t let yourself be deceived by the title, although ist is called “New Age”, there is nothing esoteric in it – only useful information!

Is Pagerank really important?

To make it short: Yes and No!

Yes, because it determines a few aspects of the quality of your links.
No, because it doesn’t tell anything about your ranking for the keywords that will give you the most traffic…

For example, one of my very new sites, www.naturfotokalender.de, has a Pagerank of 0, not surprisingly…

But the ranking at the time of writing this for one of the main keyphrases (“Fotokalender Gimp”) is number one on the german google SERP…

But what is Pagerank, actually? If you have the google toolbar, then you will notice the Pagerank bar and will see that it shows a green bar. More green, higher pagerank, more important site. If it only was this easy…

Do I really need to know this?

In my opinion, not really. What you need to know is: If I get links from sites with high pagerank (or pagerank at all, e.g. a minimum of 1) then that is good. Is it good because it help you rank higher? Not exactly – it helps you rank faster, if, and only if, the links have the right anchor text. It helps you rank faster because sites with higher pagerank are spidered more often. That means your link will be found soon by google and can be taken into account. If you have a link on a Pagerank 0 site (grey Pagerank bar) then it takes maybe a month or longer until the site is spidered again (if at all) and it will take ages before this paricular link can contribute to your ranking.

So if you got a blog list from the blog search on seo-traffic-guide.de, look for the dofollow blogs with higher pagerank first…

I know that Pagerank is a controversial topic and I am fully aware that this was only a simplified way of looking at pagerank, so feel free to comment and tell me what you think about PR!

Update on google chrome internet browser

I downloaded the new beta of the google internet browser (chrome) and currently I am typing this in a a new tab of chrome. My first impression? It is lightning fast, both at program start and at loading pages. If you open a new tab, your most often pages are shown and you can jump to one of them with one click.

It all looks very neat! Enough for now, I will play some more with it

Today Google announced their own web browser called “Chrome” (http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/09/fresh-take-on-browser.html) – In my opinion a bit more competition is a good thing. Although I hope that this will not hurt the mozilla firefox project. All the technical background for the new browser is explained in a nice comic:

15 minutes SEO

O.k. I have to admit that the title of my post is a little bit misleading – to make it clear I am speaking of 15 minutes for SEO per day.

On the other hand 15 minutes is not too much. For your first day you should concentrate on on page factors (onsite optimization).

You can use free programs like Traffic Travis to check some crucial onsite optimization factors – that would be your first day’s 15 minutes

On your second day you can start with off page optimization – that is: building backlinks.

Get yourself a list of do follow blogs on the do follow blog finder and post thoughtful comments to do follow blogs for 15 minutes everyday. Depending on how fast you can type you will build a reasonable amount of backlinks every day.

Now you will say: “Fine – I’ll do that for 3 hours for the next week, then I have hundreds of links in no time…” Well, that is not a good idea! Your link growth would be very unnatural. Google and the other search engines want to see a steady growth over time. If you stick to the 15 minutes a day rule you will reach a good amount of links very soon, too, but your link growth will stay natural.

You don’t have to buy an office program

One of the improvements I added to the blog finder is that the results are now delivered as xls sheets.

This means you can use the autofilter feature to filter for a certain PageRank, for CommentLuv or KeywordLuv and of course for do-follow blogs or nofollow blogs.

Very short after the launch I got an email:

“Nice service, but what have you thought by sending xls files?? I do not have Microsoft Exel and I don’t intend to buy it! Your service has become worthless!”

Let me assure you: I do not own Microsoft Excel, too. Nevertheless I can open and work with excel files as I use StarOffice. Now you could say there is no difference whether I buy one or the other, both are expensive enough. But that is not quite true, because I got StarOffice for free, it is part of the free Google Pack.

Ranking study: First hit from google

I have to admit – the first hit from google is for a keyword that is a little bit weird: “kostenloserfirefox mozilla”

But nevertheless – it is a hit and I checked the ranking – and now hold your breath: Google page one, ranking number 4! That is a very good ranking (Although for a seldom searched keyword)

Let’s hope that things go on like this and at the same speed!

3waylinks site approval

A short update on my ranking study:

3waylinks states that it will take about 48 hours on business days to get your site reviewed and approved once you have submitted it. Well in my case it went a lot faster! Merely 8 hours later my site was approved and I assume that by tomorrow the first links will go live. Hopefully the results will help my in my race against time – Google recommendations will work for only three more weeks – will 3waylinks help me to get ranked fast enough?

Next step in my small ranking study: my firefox site is indexed at google – that step went rather fast. So I went on, installed the 3waylinks wordpress plugin and did some keyword research with KeywordElite to find out what Keyphrases I want to rank for and put the site into 3waylinks. Currently I am waiting to the site being reviewed. Hopefully this will be done by tomorrow – let’s see how long it takes until the first visitor arrives on the page

Top 3 reasons it pays to be a product vendor.

Most people who get into business online start off either building web sites for AdSense revenue or being an affiliate of other people’s products. That’s a reasonable way to begin, since there’s less work, less responsibility, and probably most important for people starting out, less risk involved.

But the truth is that there’s simply less earning potential in AdSense sites or being an affiliate when compared to creating and selling your own product online.

There are three major benefits of being a product owner over being the a site publisher or affiliate.

1. More earning ability than affiliate commissions, both initially and after the sale.

As an AdSense publisher, you get paid once when a visitor clicks an ad. As an affiliate, you get paid once when the visitor buys the product you link to. That’s usually where it ends.

As a product owner, you have a lot more opportunities to profit. When a visitor becomes a customer, then you have the most valuable asset any business can have: a customer! It’s ten times easier to sell to a happy customer a second, third and fourth time than to convert a visitor into a customer.

I’ve got customers who’ve told me that they buy my products without even reading the sales page! They buy first and then read over the benefits. “My credit card loves you” was the exact words of a loyal long-time customer of mine.

The obvious financial rewards aside, as a product owner you also have the ability to tweak things about your site to make it convert better – modify headlines, wording in the sales page, incentives, price. As an affiliate you can’t change any of those things about the product you’re trying to sell, even if you have a good idea of what would make the product sell better.

2. Greater growth potential as you recruit affiliates.

As an affiliate or AdSense publisher, you’re limited to your own ability to create growth in your business. It’s usually not cost-effective to have other people do the work for you. For example, you can setup a Pay-Per-Click campaign to sell the products, but you have to pay for every click, which cuts into your profit margin. You can't go out and recruit others to sell the product for you, either.

As an affiliate or publisher you’re usually just a one-man show. As fast as your fingers can type is as fast as you can put up articles or web sites that drive traffic to your affiliate links. There's no way to leverage other people's work.

As a product owner, however, you don’t have these limitations. Beyond sending an email to my list, I do no outside advertising of my products. I know that if I have a good product that it will be found in the PayDotCom or ClickBank marketplace by affiliates eager to sell the product. I know a portion of my my initial customer base will also look into becoming affiliates for the product.

After I create a product I just sit back and let the affiliates do all the work! They run all of the Pay-Per-Click campaigns, they write blog posts and do search engine optimization for their web sites and Squidoo pages, they write articles and reviews and submit them to directories. I don’t have to do any real promotional work at all. In my mind that makes it a lot easier to be a product owner than an affiliate.

Let me give you an example of how much traffic affiliates can drive to your site. For just one of my products, Instant Article Wizard, I had more than 42,000 unique visitors in June of 2008. Of that 42,000, only about 2,500 came from search engines. The rest came from the work done by my affiliates. Searching for the phrase “instant article wizard” in Google returns about 118,000 results – of which only half a dozen or so belong to me.

Do you have any idea what it would cost to drive that kind of traffic with AdWords? Even at only 50 cents a click that’s $21,000 for one month’s worth of traffic! The reality is that you probably couldn't find enough keywords to get that kind of traffic out of PPC, not without paying huge per-click prices.

Even at 50% commission, affiliates are by far the cheapest form of advertising for the volume of traffic you can get from them.

3. The money is in the list.

The third major benefit of being a product owner is that even if the visitor does not buy immediately, you have the chance to get them onto you mailing list with the offer of a free gift or some specialized information. Afterward you can follow up with more teaching and coaching until they reach the point of trust where they’re ready to buy.

As an affiliate, it’s usually a now-or-never deal. Either they convert and make you a few dollars right now, or they’re lost forever. You don’t suffer from this shortcoming as a product owner. You can grow your list and teach them and win their trust over weeks or months, and in time they will help build your bottom line by becoming a customer.

As an example: I have a core set of about 5,000 people on my 50,000+ email list that are my real buyers. They’re the folks who read every email I send, leave comments on my blog posts, and have bought at least some of my products. Every so often a “lurker” on my list – a person who, up until now, has only been feeding off of the information I give out – has enough trust in me to become a member of my core list.

It takes time to build someone up to that point of trust, and affiliates don’t have the luxury of that time. Only product owners do.

So why isn't every one a vendor?

If being a product owner is so great, why isn't everybody a product owner? Because there's more risk in putting time, money and effort into creating a product. If it doesn't take off, you're left holding the bill. As an affiliate, if your efforts don't pay off, you're still holding the bill, it's just usually a lot smaller bill.

Being an affiliate also means less responsibility: no customer support, no follow-ups. You make a few dollars and you go on your merry way.

I think it's a good idea to start off as an affiliate, but you'll hit a ceiling where you won't be able to go any further. When you hit that ceiling, it's time to move on to becoming a product owner.

How fast can you get ranked if you want use your last chance on Google recommendations?

I will conduct a little experiment to see how effective 3waylinks really is:

As you may know the Google recommendations programme will be suspended end of August… Not much time if you want to make a little money from that.

Today I started a domain with firefox referrals and want to get it ranked in google as fast as possible. As a kickstarter I digged the page and made one doFollow blog comment on a blog I found here on seo-traffic-guide.de. That, together with the link from this experiment page should get the site indexed.

After that I will use nothing more than 3waylinks to get an accurate picture of the power of 3waylinks.

Of course I could do more linkbuilding – but I do not want to use any other methods in order to see what 3waylinks can do for me.

Is link building unethical?

Over at the Warrior Forum recently, a user there (who appears to be pretty new to Internet Marketing), stated that my 3WayLinks.net link building service was "dishonest", "immoral" and "unethical." Those were his exact words. He didn't say that he "felt" it was that way, he applied an across the board, no-contest judgment regarding the service.

I responded with a series of questions asking whether or not he felt writing articles to get backlinks is unethical, or posting comments to blogs was unethical, or using social bookmarking sites for backlinks was unethical. The user never answered these questions, so I can only assume that he was unable to do so without undermining his original argument. He continued, however, with a series of arguments which I responded to and, in my opinion, debunked. Numerous other users chimed in to support and agree with my position, but there were some on the other side of the fence as well.

I felt there was something to be learned from the debate, and I wanted to share my perspective on link building with my readers here. Your position may be completely opposite, or you may be somewhat in line with my opinion or somewhat out of line with my opinion. But here's how I feel about it:

The basic argument from the other side of the debate appears to be that any "artificial manipulation" of the search results is dishonest, including link building. I can't say this absolutely, as the other person refused to answer my questions in order for me to have a completely clear understanding of their point of view. However, it certainly appeared that this person felt anything even remotely appearing to violate Google's Webmaster Guidelines is morally wrong.

I've heard this argument before, and I disagree with it for a number of reasons.

Problem #1: Defining "the rules"

First of all, in order for something to be unethical, you have to have a consistent set of standards by which to judge the action. To make this clear, let's use an unethical act that I think everyone will agree on: theft.

Theft is defined at Dictionary.com as "the act of stealing; the wrongful taking and carrying away of the personal goods or property of another; larceny." Simply put, if somebody has something that does not belong to you, and you take it without permission, it's theft. I don't think there are many people who would disagree with that.

Let's contrast that with link building, using Google's Webmaster Guidelines as our "rules." Here's what Google suggestions you do in terms of building links:

Have other relevant sites link to yours.
Make sure all the sites that should know about your pages are aware your site is online.
Submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!, as well as to other industry-specific expert sites.

Notice how vague these guidelines are. Let's go through them one at a time.

1. Have other relevant sites link to yours.

Okay, the problem here is the lack of definition of what constitutes a relevant site. For some, it would mean only sites that are based on the same subject matter. That is, if you have a site that is generally about arthritis pain relief, they feel you should only get links from arthritis-related sites.

The problem with that point of view is that it fails to take into account the vast range of subjects that fall into that category. For instance, as was shown in a previous blog post, such diverse subjects such as swimming, cycling, weight loss, vitamins, different types of fat, comfortable furniture, etc. can all be related to arthritis pain relief. So is it okay to get links from weight loss sites or furniture sites to your arthritis pain relief site? Given the lack of specifics, that can only be labeled a personal question, not an ethical one.

2. Make sure all the sites that should know about your pages are aware your site is online.

Again, vagueness is the culprit here. Frankly, since I know that links from other sites are what rank my sites in Google, I'd like every site to know that mine is online! That means getting links from as many sites, in as many categories as possible. Without a better definition of what Google means, it's impossible for everyone to share the same viewpoint of this recommendation.

3. Submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!, as well as to other industry-specific expert sites.

The same problems that exist with #1 and #2 exist with #3. What defines "relevant"? What defines "industry-specific expert sites"? From what we're given by Google, it's left for us to decide.

So, in contrast with the pretty straightforward unethical act of theft, link building can hardly be considered an indisputable breach of ethics. Now, it certainly can be relegated to a decision of one's conscience. If a person doesn't feel that building links would be right, they certainly have the option of not doing so — and I don't advocate doing anything that doesn't sit well with your inner radar. However, to claim that others are dishonest or unethical because of link building would not be appropriate, because the standards put in front of us leave a huge amount of leeway for interpretation.

This is true in many aspects of our everyday life, too. For example, we've all been taught that we should be "kind" to people, and most would agree that we should. But to what degree, and in what situations is left up to our own conscience to decide. In the end I believe we will find out whether or not we did what was right from a higher authority, but to try and group building links to your website into a great moral or ethical issue is nonsense in my opinion.

Problem #2: "The rules" aren't rules!

The second big problem in the "unethical linking" argument is that the "rules" everyone refers to aren't rules, and Google never calls them rules. They are referred to as "guidelines." Guidelines are generally much looser in their approach then rules.

For instance, "the speed limit is 30 m.p.h." is a rule. However, "you need to drive slowly" is a guideline which relies on your own personal view of what "slowly" means. There is a point at which virtually everyone would agree that another person is not driving "slowly" in a given situation, but there's also a lot of gray area where people would disagree.

Google can't call their guidelines rules because they are intentionally vague. Google seems to feel that creating too strict a set of rules would give away too much information about how their algorithm works, and so they make vague statements bordering on being almost useless.

Problem #3: I can design my website any way I want to.

The third problem with the "unethical linking" argument is that it fails to accept the fact that, as a webmaster, I have the right to design my site any way I see fit. Just as taking an object out of my house can't be considered stealing (since I own the object), the act of adding links to my site to whatever other sites I choose cannot be considered unethical.

This third point is really where the "unethical" argument breaks down. After all, as webmasters we have not entered into any kind of agreement with Google. We have not agreed to abide by their guidelines. We have signed no contracts. Google has not requested our permission to crawl and index our sites, and they do not give us any kind of compensation for the act of doing so. What Google does, Google does of its own accord and without permission.

Granted, it's in our best interest to be indexed and rank well in Google, so we want to try and do what we can to that end, but they have not asked our permission and give us no direct compensation for using our content.

So if a group of webmasters setup their sites in a way that they know will help them rank well in Google, and Google crawls those sites, counts those links and ranks those pages, can that be defined as unethical? Google has made the choice to index and rank the sites. They don't have to do so, and if they change their minds about it, they can always remove sites they feel should not be in their index.

I see services such as 3WayLinks.net like a farmer's co-op. In a farmer's co-op, a group of farmers join forces to be able to have more buying power and get cheaper rates for equipment and supplies. It's in a smaller farmer's best interests to join so that they can compete with the "big dogs" of their industry and not be priced out of the market.

My linking service serves the same purpose. The "big dogs" of the web can afford to get huge numbers of links aimed at their sites through a variety of means (some Google sanctioned, some not). 3WayLinks.net is a "linking co-op", where the smaller guys can join forces to help each other compete with the larger sites. You may or may not agree, but that's how I see it and why I created it.

Problem #4: We have no relationship with Google.

A webmaster's relationship with Google cannot be equated to a user's relationship with a site for which they have an account. When you create an account with an interactive site, you usually agree to their terms of service, and so any actions you take interacting with that site must abide by those terms. Thus, when MySpace sued a spammer, they won, because the spammer had violated the terms they agreed to.

However, we've never "created an account" with Google. We never invited Google to our site. They just assume you want them there (and who doesn't?) and so they crawl and index the site. But if our site is doing something Google doesn't like, we have not violated any kind of agreement, and they have no right to take any legal action.

From my perspective, all search engine optimization is a risk/reward scenario. You have to be smart about how you interpret Google's guidelines, because they certainly have the right to remove your site if you're doing something they don't like. But as the owner of the site, you have the right to create it and link to it in any way you see fit (as long as you have permission to put links where you are putting them — more on that in a bit).

Problem #5: What are the real "rules" anyway?

Also, I don't think that Google's Webmaster Guidelines are what define the real "rules" of Google. They can't, because they're far too vague. The real definition of the rules is Google's algorithm. The problem with these "rules" is that they are constantly changing as the Google team modifies that algorithm. So what works well today may not work well tomorrow. That's why it's so important to diversify your search engine optimization and link building methods, which will help insulate you from future changes that are sure to come.

I can't tell you how many threads on webmaster forums I've read where people are crying that they "did everything right" and Google obliterated their rankings in a major update. So is it really Google's Webmaster Guidelines that sets the rules, or is it their algorithm?

This behavior on Google's part has lead some to abandon the "white hat" theory of search engine optimization all together. Personally, I don't wear hats. Let me tell you why.

I don't wear hats: white, gray or black.

You've probably heard of the three "hats" of search engine optimization. They are generally thought of like so:

White Hat – You do everything Google recommends in their guidelines.
Gray – You don't do what Google recommends, but you don't misuse other people's web sites for your own gain.
Black – You don't do what Google recommends, and you don't mind misusing other people's web sites for your own gain.

The "white hat" is a fantasy, some great ideal held up before people that doesn't exist. How can there be a true "white hat" when Google does not give specifics in their guidelines, and does not publish their algorithm? Also, since Google's algorithm is always changing, today's "white hat" is tomorrow's "unacceptable practice." To make matters worse, since we have no specific rules from Google, all webmasters have to go based on their own interpretation of Google's vague guidelines, so at best the hat is "light gray."

I don't like the label "gray hat" either, though, since that assumes that you are doing something "sorta" wrong by ignoring Google's guidelines, but you're not. You have the right to build your site any way you want. Of course, Google has the right to penalize or remove your site from their search results, but that's a quality decision, not a moral judgment.

I do, however, believe in the "black hat" label. Using other people's web properties without their knowledge or consent for your own selfish gain is very unethical in my mind. An example of this is blog comment spam. Stuffing thousands of comments into unsuspecting blogs in the hope that you can get some back links from those comments when you've never even read the blog posts is unethical to me, and I would never engage in such a practice. So I don't wear that hat either.

The difference between using an unsuspecting blog for comment spam, and designing a site to rank well in Google, is that Google comes to you. Google crawls and indexes your site of their own volition. The blog owner does not come to you and ask that you put comments on their blog for the sole purpose of your personal gain. Google, on the other hand, wants your content and indexes it accordingly. One similarity between the two, though, is that the blog owner can make the decision to delete a comment they feel is inappropriate for their blog, and Google, too, has the right to remove sites it feels are not of the quality they want in their index.

The Bottom Line: It's your decision.

I don't believe in the mantra, "it's not personal, it's business." I strongly believe that your personal ethics and beliefs should very much effect every aspect of your life, including your business. That said, there are situations that are simply business decisions. There are risk/reward decisions that every business has to make. "Will this advertisement help me make sales, or hurt my image?" Those kinds of decisions have to be made all the time, and there are good and bad consequences associated with those decisions.

To me, as long as you're not doing anything that steals links or content from other web sites, search engine optimization is a risk/reward decision, not an ethical one. "Will this hurt my rankings in Google, or will it help it?" There's always risk involved.

Google used to love reciprocal links, and so people got reciprocal links. Then Google changed their minds and decided one-way links were more valuable, and a lot of those reciprocally linking sites fell out of the rankings. Was Google right in their determination that one-way links are better than reciprocal? It doesn't matter, because it wasn't an ethical decision on their part — it was a business decision, and they had the right to make that decision.

Were the owners of those sites who linked to each other reciprocally "unethical"? My opinion is No, because it wasn't an ethical decision on the part of the site owners either, but a business decision which they had the right to make.

What about being a part of the very successful 3WayLinks network, or writing articles for backlinks, or creating blogs and posting to them for linking purposes, or posting to social bookmarking sites for the purpose of traffic and links? Are those actions "unethical"?

You have my opinion, and the bottom line is: it's your decision.

What are your chances to beat your competition?

That is a question that many of us ask themselves quite often…
Too bad that many ask this question at the wrong time – after they have put great effort and time into ranking for a certain keyword and not reaching the desired goals.
Is there a way to estimate whether a given keyword is worth trying to rank for?
Here is what I do:
Do a google search for the keyword in question.
Take the URL of the number one search result (or number 3 or 10, depending wheth.er you want to see your chances for a lower rank, too).
Next head over to Yahoo and do a “link:competitorsurl.com” search.
Yahoo will then show the number of incoming links to that URL. Google has a “link:” command, too. But to be honest, forget it. They just don’t show what they know, Yahoo is by far more accurate.
You can switch the incoming links display to “except from this domain” to get a better idea of how much work is you’ll have to to ragarding building backlinks.
Of course you never know exactly whether Yahoo has indexed all backlinks that google has but on the other hand not all of the links will have your keyword as an anchor. So this method will give you a good Idea of how many backlinks you will need to reach your desired SERP position.
This method requires a little bit of work – if you are too lazy try SEO Elite, this fantastic piece of software will help you find out about your competion, can track your rankings and a lot more!

After you know the amount of backlinks necessary you can start building backlinks. You can start out with commenting to do-follow blogs , and again, if you are too lazy try something automated, like building backlinks automatically with 3waylinks.

From my experience any site that shows up to 500 links can easily be beaten, for sites with more backlinks, often a little more dedication is needed. If you use 3waylinks in combination with other link building strategies and bring some patience with you, you can definitly reach your goals.

Tap into the keyword potiential of your site

I am often asked how to choose keywords. If you unsure of what keywords could bring more traffic to your site or what you should write about more, then you should determine the potential of keywords that are found on your site, but did not lead to any search engine clicks up to now. If you just used your web server logs or tools like google analytics to determine for which keywords your site was actually found, then you are missing out on a huge potential – the keywords that your site could be found for. There are many searches in google that would show your site in the results, but nobody ever clicked on it. The reason for that could be that your site is just on page 2344 of the SERPs or that the search result doesn’t look attractive enough. In both cases, you should do something. If the result does not look attractive, use a short descriptive meta description for your page (72 characters), and if you want to rise in the SERPs use backlink building techniques like do follow blog comments.

So but how can you find out what those keywords are that you are found for but nobody clicks on?

Use google webmaster tools! The search statics in google webmaster tools will show you the top 20 last searches that your site was found for. Take those and consider optimizing for those keywords and see your traffic rise!

How valuable is a single backlink?

Well, I think that depends very much on the site this backlink is on. Would you pay 15$ for a single backlink to your site? I would say that is rather much. Would you take a 15$ discount if all you had to do is put a link to the shop on your page?
That is exactly where this story starts. Today I purchased a SSD Harddrive for my little home server at MemorySuppliers.com and was quite surprised when the offer for a 15$ cash-back in return for a single link came along with the shipping notice. Not only had they shipped my order just a few hours later, had the best bargain SSD drive and seem to have almost everything you could think of when it comes to computer memory – on top of that they value a backlink at 15$ ! And even without demanding a special keyword in the anchor text. Maybe they don’t know how important the link anchor is for ranking in google?

Dear staff at Memorysuppliers.com:

The keywords in the anchor are the most important thing because they determine for which keywords you rank well! And because of that I will reward you with an extra link: the best and cheapest memory can be found at memorysuppliers.com…

And for the rest of my readers: This is an excellent idea for getting backlinks to your business: Offer a rebate in exchange for a backlink from your customer’s web sites… And don’t forget to ask them to link with your favourite keywords as anchor text

And by the way: They asked me to link to memorysuppliers.com but this link is redirected to www.memorysuppliers.com …Is this good or bad for SEO?

Have commenters come back to your blog

It is a very nice thing to have a steady flow of new visitors coming to your blog every day. But even better is if your visitors come back. You want your blog to be interesting enough so that your readers will come back. An excellent way to achieve this is having a lively discussion about your posts. But how often did you find a an interesting blog, posted a comment to the post because the topic of the post was interesting, perhaps even asking a question, and then you forgot about this blog? I reckon that happened to you, too. At least it did for me quite often. And probably this will happen to quite a few of your visitors, too. And it means that you have lost a visitor, because the commenter will not find back to your blog. Now at least for WordPress blogs there is a easy solution: Mark Jaquith wrote a wonderful wordpress plugin called “subscribe to comments“. Just go his page and install it on your blog. From that on your commenters can check whethter they want to be informed about a new comment on the topic they commented, too. That means they will probably drop by as soon as their question was answered or if a new interesting comment was made.

The Rarest Word is a new service that can show definitions of words that are characteristic for websites. When you check your own website (you can add it, if it is not known yet) it shows you all the words that are seldomly used on your page and thus are characteristic for your site. If the term does not have a description yet, just enter one and you get a free backlink from that keyword to your site!

Is that all you can do with it? No! You can also get new ideas for keywords and topics by having a look at your competion respectlively related sites. For that there is a section called Auto SEwOrdizer: It shows a list of keywords that other sites which share the same characteristic words with your site do use and you don’t. Pretty cool, isn’t it?

This is a useful new method of getting a few free backlinks that you can use together with blog commenting and other techniques.

[Update:]

You get a free backlink if there are terms with no definition. If you are the first one to submit a definition for a keyword, then this keyword is linked to your site. So by defining words, you can get lots of backlinks with these terms as anchors to your page…

5 Ways to Keep Visitors Coming Back

Suggestions about Keyword Anchor Text

We all know how we name many of our pages. I’m referring to pages we create to do well for a specific keyword.

Let’s say our keyphrase is..

Buy Microvaves Indiana

Let say you have a page name www.domain.com/buy-microwaves-indiana.html

Many people would simply try to construct blog posts using “Buy Microwaves Indiana” as their anchor text (the text that is underlined in your blog post).

Now what is wrong with that? Well a couple of things. If you use any of the popular keyword research tools you often see many keyphrases such as this, and I’m referring to phrases that really aren’t correct English.

Now here’s the problem. If you were to outsource the above post or even if you write it yourself. you are trying to work a grammatically incorrect phrase into a post. You may say, “But the keyword research tools tell me this is how people are searching”, and while there may be truth in that statement, what that tool is not telling you is that this is not what Google’s spiders are looking for.

Google tries to detect natural language patterns. If you are using the above phrase in a blog post, it simply is not going to look natural.

People are so fixated on having keyword anchor text match exactly what keyword tools tell them they should be using that they are in fact leaving a giant footprint for Google and other search engines that you are ‘over optimizing’. If you ever read any of the SEO forums, I’m sure you’ve seen people discuss this.

What I’m trying to say is that whether you have other people write your blog posts for you or you are writing the posts yourself, make certain the keywords are used naturally.

For example, the above phrase should be ‘buy microwaves IN Indiana’ or ‘where to buy microwaves in Indiana’

What you perceive you are losing by not using the exact keyphrase you are more than making up for by using text that appeals to Google’s LSI (Latent Symatenc Indexing) technology.

I’m sure you’ve seen sites generated where the navigation menu down the side has tons of these phrases. None of them are natural. These will stand out like a sore thumb to Google! As long as the main words you want to use as your keyword anchor text are PART of the actual anchor text you use you will be fine.

Not only will the blogs look more natural, your post will look more natural.

The key to success today with link campaigns is to make everything look as real and as natural as possible.

If you do that, Google will like you, and anyone who writes posts for you will be able to write a much better, more natural sounding post for you. While this might go against the grain of what you’ve been told to do or have been doing, I can assure you that it works.

How to choose keywords that will convert

I am often asked how to choose keywords. Mostly this relates to the Blogsearch for Blogs with no nofollow-Tag. For this matter choosing keywords is not so important – as it is only for finding blogs with a topic you are familiar with – in order to enable you to make quality comments.

But what about the keywords you build your site around and what about the keywords you use when commenting on a do-follow blog? Here it is extremely important to choose wisely. First of all, you will want to know wether there is a sufficient search volume for a given term. For that purpose tools like Keyword Elite are very helpful (And by the way Keyword Elite can help you with quite a few other keyword related tasks.

But this doesn’t help you in the decision wether a keyword is just very popular or wether a person searching for it actually intends to buy something. Now what if you were a search engine and could just look up your statistics … wouldn’t that be great?

The major goal of SEO ist getting more traffic to your website. But is getting more traffic all you need to be successful? Of course not! More often than not you will have a goal on your page, like you want your visitors to opt-in to your list, or download something or buy something from you. As you probably know this is called a conversion. It really is a good idea to track your conversions, as this will give you a lot of hints what to improve on your site.

What Permalink Structure Should I Be Using?

In my last post, I spoke about the importance of permalink structures, but it seems the one I recommended isn’t without it’s issues.

I told you that I personally use the custom permalink structure /%postname%/ which hasn’t seemed to be an issue until now… but yesterday, I started getting all kinds of errors with my feeds and when I tried to check for feed validation, I get another error saying that my feed isn’t valid.

After some digging around, I found a discussion on the Semiologic Forum and Denis de Bernardy, the developer of Semiologic, states that using the custom permalinks structure /%postname% will make make WordPress think that yoursite.com/feed is the post titled /feed. In other words, it makes WP confuse your posts, pages, and feed urls.

So, having shyed away from using the default date/name based structure, it seems that this is the one Denis and many others recommend because it’s just as good for SEO, and it’s much better for usability.

This is what yours would look like, using the date/name based structure:

Which WordPress SEO Plugin should I choose?

How long has everyone been telling you that Google loves blogs? Months? Years? Well, it’s true, and I wanted to share an experience that helps reinforce that truth to you.

The Blog That Resurrected My Rankings

I had a site devoted to a particular type of exercise equipment. The site was in the top 7 results for its keywords in Google for over six months. Unfortunately I had server problems and the site went down for a few days. Google crawled the site constantly because it was well-linked, and so big G knew instantly that the site was down. Since it stayed down for a few days, Google must have decided it wasn’t coming back up, and its rankings plummetted.

After the site did come back up, it reappeared in Google, but this time on the third page (ranking 25 – 28 for its keywords, on average). Its original page one rankings just wouldn’t come back. I shrugged it off as a lesson learned and basically forgot about the site.

Early last week, though, I was testing a tool I’m creating that helps you write and post blog posts to WordPress blogs super fast. I decided to setup a blog on the site that lost its rankings, just to test it out. I made a bunch of blog posts (they were post-dated so they would show up slowly over time), and sat back to see what would happen.

To my surprise, over the weekend my site jumped back onto page one for its rankings. I hadn’t touched that site in months, and now it’s ranking better than it ever was — at #4 for 3 great sets of keywords. This, of course, has spiked my AdSense earnings for the site.

Another nice benefit of the new blog is that the blog itself is getting some additional traffic from Google, even though the blog does not have any external links directly to it. Google is applying the authority of the site itself to the blog. Since the site is well-linked, the blog is given a bit of “trust” by Google and is appearing in the search results as well.

Scraper Sites Can Help You Rank

On a related note regarding blogs and traffic, I’ve recently setup a blog that automatically creates a bunch of posts each day based on a variety of keywords. This blog is a test for a larger idea I have in mind, and the test is working great, with the blog having achieved more than 12,000 unique visitors in the last 5 days. The vast majority of the traffic has come from Google.

As part of that same test, I setup a second, similar blog that does the same kind of thing. Despite the second blog actually having more content, it has (so far) received no joy from Google at all (it’s not even indexed yet).

The difference is in the scraper sites that are referencing the content. The keywords that I’m creating content around for my successful blog is a scraper magnet — hundreds of scraper sites are auto-posting content from my own blog to theirs, and giving a reference link back to my blog posts to try and make it more legit.

How do these scraper sites know about my brand-new blog posts so fast? Because the blog is indexed by Google’s blog search, and many scraper sites scrape results from that blog search to post to their own blogs. They also scrape many other blog search engines, and since my blog pings those search engines when I make a new post, the blog’s content gets picked up and spread around fast.

Those links from these automated scraper sites have resulted in my blog quickly gaining hundreds of backlinks from all over the web, and that means great rankings for the pages of my blog.

The second test blog I setup, however, has not attracted the scraper blogs and so hasn’t even been indexed in Google yet. It might seem strange that scraper sites can help you rank, but if they link back to the source of the content, they really can.

Trackbacks Are Your Friend

On a final note, I recommend setting up your blog to automatically post trackback links to the blog posts that you link out to. If you’re not familiar with trackbacks, it’s a simple concept: any time you link to an external blog post from within your own blog post, your blog posts a “comment” to the blog post you’ve linked to, letting the readers of that post know about your own post referencing it.

Now, not all blogs will approve your trackback link, but many will, and I’ve received literally thousands of visitors from a single trackback link appearing on a popular blog. So make sure you setup your blog to automatically post trackbacks to the blogs that you link out to — it can often result in a flood of traffic.

Have more success with long tail searches

First of all – what the heck are long tail searches? To make it short :

Long tails searches are the searches with keywords on your site that your site is not explicitly designed for. Most often the searches that will give you many visitors are only those for a few keywords. For example, if you own a site about cleaning methods for the back of espresso machines, just to make up a weird example, you might get most visitors for “back of espresso machines”, “cleaning espresso machines”, and “espresso cleaning”. Lets say these main keywords give you 100 visitors a day. But most certainly your site will be found for other keywords as well, and if you look at those you will very often be quite astonished, because you wouldn’t have dreamed that anyone would a) search for that combination, and b) land on your site for that combination.

Now – what can we do with that knowledge?

There are two consequences:

1. Analysing your long tail keywords is an excellent way to get ideas for new content and gives you a clear direction which keywords to optimize for, because those are the keywords your site is currently found for. So you should write more about the topics that your long tail keywords define and you should get backlinks for those of your long tail keywords that are most promising. (One way to get backlinks is of course using the dofollow blog finder)

2. You need to have lots of content on your site, because having more content means having more possible keywords. And this of course results in more long tail searches and this results in more visitors. But how to get more content? One way is making up new stories, new blog articles or new subpages based on the topics of your long tail search keywords. Another possibility is to buy PLR-Content and use that, either rewritten or as it is. I strongly recommend rewriting, as otherwise you might feel the duplicate content penalty that comes into action if google finds the same content on better ranking sites.

Getting free backlinks from blog comments

Getting links to to your site from other sites is what drives you up in the search engine rankings. Getting links with an anchor text that you can determine makes the real difference…

So how does this all work here?

First of all – you can get free backlinks, but it is a little bit of work involved… You have to find blogs that do not use the nofollow attribute in their links… What is the “nofollow attribute”? Basically it tells search engines to disregard the link to your site! So we need blogs that do follow (and of course have commenting enabled)!

Luckily, finding those is quite easy now, just go to the search form and enter a keyword or keyword phrase for which you want to find do follow blogs. This does not have to be the keyword that you want to rank for or that you want to use when you write blog comments, it just have to describe the topic you are looking for. In fact it is better to choose a broader approach, as you will receive more blogs if you use a more general search term.
When the system has finished checking all the sites for DoFollow, you will receive an email with a list of blogs for your topic – depending on how popular the topic actually is. Obviously this is the reason why you have to use a working email adress…

Now you can visit these no-nofollow blogs and leave a comment with some of your keywords in the “name” field and your website in the website field …and voila – you have a one-way backlink to your site with your keywords as an anchor!

So, why is it important to have dofollow blogs for your exact keyword phrases and not just any dofollow blogs? Well, to be honest, it is not so important at all – it just makes it easier for you to make quality comments to the blogs you found. And this is crucial! If you do not make sensible, thoughtful comments, your comments will be deleted! Or even worse: Your website might be added to blog spam filters what makes it hard to have your comments stick on other blogs as well… So to be on the safe side, have a look on the blog you are going to comment on. If there are already some comments with funny names that look more like keywords, go on and post your comment, if not perhaps just go on to the next blog in the list. It might not be worth the work if your comment is deleted.

So be sure to choose keywords that you know a little bit about, they should have to do with your site’s topic but you can try a broad range of related keywords if the search does not give you enough results. What can you do if the search only gives you a handful of blogs or no blogs at all? Well this can happen, as using the nofollow tag is the default in programs like wordpress, so it might be hard to find blogs. Don’t worry – Try to search with similar keywords or a broader keyphrase. The exact topic of the blogs does not matter to much – your links will be counted even if they are from a blog that is not related to the keywords of your site. What really matters is that you can choose the anchor text of your link.

There is a little work to do with this method, but it provides you with a virtually endless supply of free one way backlinks!

“1000 Visitors in 24 Hours” – that is the title of a 30 page report written by Jonathan Leger. Yes, that is the same guy who made 3waylinks.net, InstantArticleWizard.com and a whole lot of other great SEO/Internet Marketing stuff.

With broadband internet access widely available, video has gained an enormous popularity – especially with the younger audience. Obviously there has to be a lot of money in that market, otherwise Google would not have paid $1.65 billion for YouTube!

Jon has found an easy to follow way to benefit enormously from the video hype – and to actually convert viewers into visitors. He describes a method, how he managed to convert 25% of his viewers to visitors… and not only that: the conversion rate from those visitors again was more than 10%!

His “1000 Visitors in 24 hours” Article is a detailed, easy to read, no-questions-left report, that I can only warmly recommend. “1000Visitors in 24 Hours” is in two ways different from a lot of the other stuff you can buy all over the net:

Link Popularity Pitfalls

Link popularity is an important factor in the promotion of your website. Without it you will find success hard to find. Many entrepreneurs devote a great deal of time, energy and expense into the quest for more links to their website, some gain success while others fail terribly. What are the reasons for this?

The most common pitfall that link traders find themselves falling into is, what I refer to as, “Link Greed”. The most common way in which webmasters increase their link popularity is to gain reciprocal links, a reciprocal link is the placement of a link to another site placed on your own reciprocated by a link to your own site on theirs. However not all link exchanges are equal, some are fair while others are actually dangerous to your site. Those webmasters suffering from link greed eagerly accept every link exchange offered to them and fail to take the time to make a few simple investigations to ensure that the link partner is being fair. Also, link greed can lead to the acceptance of links that are either on an unsuitable site or in an unsuitable directory.

Link popularity is not the most important factor, yes, to do well you will need a reasonable number of links to your site but, for most search engines, it is the quality of the link that is most important. If you have a site about “wrinkle treatments” it would be beneficial to exchange reciprocal links with other wrinkle treatment sites, furthermore any other site about skin care, and even the wider scope of health, would also be most suitable. However trading links with a site about deep sea fishing would hardly be suitable – can you see an Alaskan fisherman worried about his wrinkles? This analogy may be a little amusing but it is very much how the search engines attempt to view the Internet and the relationships between websites. So remember sites that increase their link popularity by trading links with relevant sites do far better than those that exchange links with any site.

Common Dangers

Now here is some important information about trading links:

1. Ensure that the search engines can find your links page and that they can find the links page of the other site. Usually this is easy to check by going to the homepage and finding the route to the links directory.

2. Try to place their link on your site on a page that matches the number of clicks from the homepage. The best links pages are those that are only 1 click from the homepage or 2 clicks. 3 clicks and beyond can be problematic.

3. Check to see if the link partner is using any tricks or immoral tactics to hide your link on their site. There are a number of tricks an unscrupulous webmaster can employ to his advantage and to your disadvantage so spend some time familiarizing yourself with the common ones.

4. Consider purchasing software to check your reciprocal links. Software such as LinkAssistant (www.link-assistant.com) will enable you to check that your link is still on the other site plus it can do many other things to help you promote your site and increase your link popularity.

Link Text/Anchor Text

Your choice of anchor text (the words that are actually linked to your site) are incredibly important. With a little research you will be able to discover what people actually search for and these are the words you should include in your anchor text. However it is not always wise to go with the terms most popularly searched for. Say you had a site about hotels in London, England in the United Kingdom, well the most popular search may be “London Hotels” but other terms are also searched for such as “boutique hotels London” or “cheap hotels London UK“. Therefore you should change your text from time to time selecting one of the lesser searched for terms (you will stand a better chance of featuring on the top page for such searches) but occasionally selecting the main search, which, in this case, would be “London Hotels”. As your link popularity increases you should widen the variety of phrases used in your anchor text. You should also include a short description below the link to describe your site, include a few keywords here also and change that often too, mixing and matching various combinations. If you stick with the same link text and description you might well find your site blacklisted for over optimization.

Most people use search engines to find the information on internet, Google is the most widely used search engine, but do you know if you use some tips you can get your desired information much quicker and easier? Google is not case sensitive. It doesn’t matter whether you type your search words in capital letters or lower case. It’s easiest just to type everything in lower case. You should use few but targeted keywords it will reduce search results, if you want to search for exact phrase then type it in quotation marks, you can do a title search on google, in the search google will search only those pages which’s title match your words, the word or phrase that must appear in the title of the web page. Here’s an example:

intitle:”abraham lincoln”, notice as you are reading your search results that quite a few of the sites listed are selling books on Abraham Lincoln and you don’t want to buy a book. How can you remove those from your search results? You can exclude any page that contains a particular word or phrase by placing a minus sign directly in front of that word or phrase, for example:

-price

would exclude all web sites that contain the word price, and it turns out that many of the sites selling books are excluded this way. All right, let’s put it all together and see what our final query would look like.

intitle:”abraham lincoln” born -price

The query above would find all web pages that have the name Abraham Lincoln in their title and the word born anywhere on the web page, and any web page that contains the word price is not include, Google gives highest priority to the first words that you type in the search box, and a lower priority to the words that are typed afterwards.

Every time you do a Google search, an I’m feeling lucky button is displayed along with the search results. If you click on this button, your browser will immediately take you to the web site of the highest ranked result that Google found.
