By David Leonhardt

(Will your website be ready, or will you be playing catch-up six months too late?

November 2003 might go down in history as the month that Google shook a
lot of smug webmasters and search engine optimization (SEO) specialists
from the apple tree. But more than likely, it was just a precursor of
the BIG shakeup to come.

Google touts highly its secret PageRank algorithm. Although PageRank is
just one factor in choosing what sites appear on a specific search, it
is the main way that Google determines the "importance" of a website.

In recent months, SEO specialists have become expert at manipulating PageRank, particularly through link exchanges.

There is nothing wrong with links. They make the Web a web rather than a
series of isolated islands. However, PageRank relies on the naturally
"democratic" nature of the web, whereby webmasters link to sites they
feel are important for their visitors. Google rightly sees link
exchanges designed to boost PageRank as stuffing the ballot box.

I was not surprised to see Google try to counter all the SEO efforts.
In fact, I have been arguing the case with many non-believing SEO
specialists over the past couple months. But I was surprised to see the
clumsy way in which Google chose to do it.

Google targeted specific search terms, including many of the most
competitive and commercial terms. Many websites lost top positions in
five or six terms, but maintain their positions in several others. This
had never happened before. Give credit to Barry Lloyd of SearchEngineGuide.com for cleverly uncovering the process.

For Google, this shakeup is just a temporary fix. It will have to make
much bigger changes if it is serious about harnessing the "democratic"
nature of the Web and neutralizing the artificial results of so many
link exchanges.

Here are a few techniques Google might use (remember to think like a search engine):

Google might start valuing inbound links within paragraphs much
higher than links that stand on their own. (For all we know, Google is
already doing this.) Such links are much less likely to be the product
of a link exchange, and therefore more likely to be genuine "democratic"
votes.

Google might look at the concentration of inbound links
across a website. If most inbound links point to the home page, that is
another possible indicator of a link exchange, or at least that the
site's content is not important enough to draw inbound links (and it is
content that Google wants to deliver to its searchers).

Google might take a sample of inbound links to a domain,
and check to see how many are reciprocated back to the linking domains.
If a high percentage are reciprocated, Google might reduce the site's
PageRank accordingly. Or it might set a cut-point, dropping from its
index any website with too many of its inbound links reciprocated.

Google might start valuing outbound links more highly. Two
pages with 100 inbound links are, in theory, valued equally, even if
one has 20 outbound links and the other has none. But why should Google
send its searchers down a dead-end street, when the information highway
is paved just as smoothly on a major thoroughfare?

Google might weigh a website's outbound link concentration.
A website with most outbound links concentrated on just a few pages is
more likely to be a "link-exchanger" than a site with links spread out
across its pages.

Google might use a combination of these techniques and ones not
mentioned here. We cannot predict the exact algorithm, nor can we
assume that it will remain constant. What we can do is to prepare our
websites to look and act like a website would on a "democratic" Web as
Google would see it.

For Google to hold its own against upstart search engines, it must
deliver on its PageRank promise. Its results reflect the "democratic"
nature of the Web. Its algorithm must prod webmasters to give links on
their own merit. That won't be easy or even completely possible. And
people will always find ways to turn Google's algorithm to their
advantage. But the techniques above can send the Internet a long way
back to where Google promises it will be.

The time is now to start preparing your website for the changes to come.

By David Leonhardt

"Dear David: I just created a website on baby toy safety. What should I
do to make sure gazillions of people find me through the search
engines?"

I can't promise you gazillions, but there are a few things you should do
to make it easy for search engines to find you. I assume you have
already decided to submit your site to the major search engines and
directories. I assume that you will develop some sort of linking
strategy (hopefully a better strategy than most websites use today). I
also assume you will have picked key search terms for all the pages on
your website.

Beyond that, here are my top five tips for making your website easy for those "gazillions" to find it.

http://www.seo-writer.com/reprint/five-seo-tips.html

A picture might be worth a thousand words, but search engines don't
read pictures. Make sure your key search terms are written out in text,
not part of a graphic title you hire somebody to prepare for you. That
also means you should not just show pictures of toys, but also write
out the names, and possibly a keyword description with the title.

Have several pages of articles related to your website's
topic. Use a different keyword search term for each article. For
instance, one article might use frequently the term "safe toys for
babies", while another might use the term "baby safety".

What's the URL of your website? Your name won't help you
there. Your key search term will. In this instance, I might pick
www.baby-toy-safety.com, for example (if that is one of your top keyword
phrases). Hire somebody who knows what he is doing to develop the
right keyword strategy for you BEFORE you choose your domain name.

What's the title of your page? I don't know how many times
I see titles such as "Article" or "Contact us". Don't expect the
search engine robots to get all excited about that term. And don't
expect anybody to search for that term, either. Much better to title
your page "Free article on safe toys for babies" or "Contact the *Baby
Toy Expert* today". By the way, this is the single most important place
to include your keyword phrases.

What about that navigation menu that appears on every
single page of your website? Does it say "Contact the baby toy expert?"
Or "about the baby toy expert". Or links about baby toys?" Need I
say more?

If your website is about life insurance, you have little hope of hitting
the front pages of any search engine. "Life insurance" is such a
competitive search engine marketplace. Unless, of course, people are
searching for a very specific and rare niche. Even then, I suspect you
will need much more than these five tips.

In fact, there are dozens, if not hundreds of things you can do to win
the search engine race. These top five search engine optimization tips
are a great start, whatever your website is about.

David Leonhardt is an effective, professional seo consultant and a website marketing consultant. For a free quote, call 613-448-3931, or send us an email.

The location can we put adsense below post title and it could be at the end of the post. We can put adsense adsense text or image, or perhaps both of our blogs adsense image if the image is more dominant and plug adsense text if a dominant post with the text. and let us follow the way to put adsense ads side by side. follow the instructions below

Here goes the code or script:

<table> <tr>
<td>Place The Script Here </ td>
<td>Place The Script Here </ td>
</ tr> </ table>

The script is not just for the adsense code but can also be used to attach pictures or other widgets. If you want to install directly the three, you can add the code again, an example:

<table> <tr>
<td> Place The Script Here </ td>
<td>Place The Script Here</ td>
<td>Place The Script Here</ td>

<td>Place The Script Here</ td>
</ tr> </ table>

and so if you want to add more.

by: Halstatt Pires

Search engine optimization this and search engine optimization that. You read and hear about it all day, but what about your site? While there are plenty of articles providing useful information, this article shows you how a real world example met with success. The point of this article is to emphasize creativity when approaching tough optimization situations.
Problems for BusinessTaxRecovery.com

In November of 2004, our firm took on the seo marketing for BusinessTaxRecovery.com. The site was being promoted through offline activities and pay-per-click campaigns. No effort had been made to achieve high rankings in Google, Yahoo or MSN.

Keyword analysis revealed that combinations of the root keywords, “business” and “tax” were going to be difficult to attack. The primary problem concerned government agencies with web sites. The IRS site, for instance, had roughly 9,680 inbound links and an absolute ton of content. State agencies weren’t far behind. The California tax agency site had roughly 7,000 inbound links and, again, tons of content.

For a final nail in the coffin, the client informed us the business was cyclical with the busiest months being January through April when people focused on taxes. The site absolutely had to rank highly during this period. We had two months to achieve results.

Gulp!

The Solution for BusinessTaxRecovery.com – 140,000 Hits

After staring at a Salvador Dali painting for a few hours, we came up with a solution. It involved a combination of internal site page focus, meta tag optimization, link exchange and massive article promotion. The results produced 145,828 hits from January through April, with only 5,000 coming from the pay-per-click program.

The first step was to change the focus of the site from the home page to the article page. Jumping the tax agency sites on keywords such as business tax and taxes was impossible in two months, so we didn’t even try. Instead, we decided to focus on the keyword phrase “business tax articles” and bring people into the site through the article page. Meta tags were optimized and a link exchange program undertaken. The key to campaign, however, was a strong article promotion campaign.

Since taxes are confusing, it seemed obvious that an article campaign focusing on tax information would meet with success. Boy, did it. Approximately 35 articles were written, published and submitted to article directories. Since the articles were timely, they were snapped up and published. The articles produced direct traffic to the site as well as numerous inbound links because of the link created in the article byline.

As for the search engines, we focused on everything but Google. We expected nothing from Google because the major content and meta tag changes would take six to eight months to show results per the usual practices of Google. In reality, it didn’t matter. The Yahoo and MSN search engines produced big time.

In mid-January, the site went to number 1 on MSN under “business tax articles.” By the end of January, Yahoo was also listing it as number 1. MSN started listing it at number 1 for “tax articles” in February. The combination of these listings produced a significant amount of traffic, conversions and a very happy client.

Can we go on cruise control now? No! With the end of the tax season, the traffic to the articles page of the site has dropped by 75%. Nobody is looking for tax information after April 15th, so this is hardly surprising. The promotion of the article page was simply a short-term solution to a difficult situation. While it should produce traffic during the first quarter of each subsequent year, it is not a year-around solution.

Over the next six months, we will focus on the long-term goal of jumping over the tax agency sites for keywords such as “business taxes”, etc. It is going to take a lot of patience, but will eventually produce a significant amount of business for the client.

Creativity is often the key to conquering seo situations. Blindly slapping up new meta tags and links isn’t always the best answer. Sometimes, a little pre-emptive consideration can yield amazing results. It did in this case.

by: Sharifah Hardie

Drive Visitors To Your Website And Increase Your Market Share.
SEO is the key to unlocking your website's full potential. Google handles over 200 million internet search requests each day, and people who search for information clearly express what they want. Imagine capturing a relevant stream of such web traffic. It's therefore important to optimize your web pages to improve search engine rankings using the most appropriate keywords describing the content of your site.

The search engine optimization process begins before you start building your website, when you decide on the domain name to register. The process then continues on as long as your website remains online.
Please note that optimizing your web pages to get high rankings takes time. Your rankings may start out low and slowly improve. Link popularity, i.e. the quantity and quality of external links to your web pages, greatly influences your rankings, and it takes time for your website to become popular in its niche.

Every time you improve your site, you need to allow time for the full effect to show in search engine results. Don't tweak your web pages too frequently. The time and effort is better spent on adding high-quality contents to your site and building inbound links.

Search Engines have computers and programs called "Spiders" that collect information about your web pages in an attempt to "figure out" what your pages are about. These spiders gather information from your pages and use these in factoring which sites get ranked higher than others. Search Engines analyze over 100 On-Page Factors when analyzing your web pages.

by: daniel chow

Unique content is King. Search engines love new, unique and updated content. If you produce new content at a rate of just one reasonably sized page per day and tied in with the other advice throughout the site, I can almost guarantee you will get good listings. Remember though, write for the visitors but cater for the search engines. If your field of expertise fits into a niche in the market, all the better for you but you must get unique content all you will fall behind.
Page Structure. Search engine bots can sometimes get confused with poorly coded html, javascript and other web languages. If the bot has to wait too long or cannot decipher the web language then it will just abandon your site and move on to the next, even if it manages to get through the code it usually leads to poor search engine indexing of your website. You should also keep to widely used file extensions like .htm, .html, .php, .asp for your pages.

Loading Speed. The loading speed of your website should be kept to a minimum, if it takes long than 5 seconds on 256kb+ connections then you lose visitors - both real and search engine bots. There are a variety of reasons why pages can load slowly, it may either be your web server, poorly coded server side code like php or client side code like javascript which can slow or even stop your page from loading.

Visitor Navigation. This is more an aesthetic feature of your website focused at real visitors but you need to have some sort of standard navigation that is the same throughout your whole site. People can be put off and leave your website if they find it difficult to browse easily, search engine bots may also miss links if they can only be found deep within your site. Try to make as many internal links as possible available on each page.

Site Hierarchy. Site hierachy can be great for adding keyword density to your web site. An example of site hierachy working effectively would be this page, seo-advice.php. The full link contains SEO twice - www.seoassistance.com/seo-advice.php which is very beneficial in the way search engines determine your sites relevance to a particular subject. Use your domain, folders and file names to your advantage.

Avoid Blackhat SEO. Blackhat SEO is a vast topic that commands little respect from real webmasters as it means using underhand methods to gain search engine rankings, although the site is usually banned quickly. Blackhat SEO includes using link farms, search engine spamming, hidden or disguised text, fake meta tag data, using duplicate content and using doorway pages. I would recommend you stay away from tactics like this as you will end up losing out in the long run.

Targeted Linkswaps. Link swaps are great but you must make them work for you. It does little good for you when your going for top search engine positions when your link swaps are untargeted. You should choose some specific keywords for both the link text and the link title text then make sure before you link swap that the other webmaster adds those specific keywords with the link.

by: daniel chow

Site Maps can be a great tool for making search engines crawl through your web site in a much more effective manner, thereby helping you get more pages indexed, and ultimately getting you more visitors. Most people know what site maps are, as they can be seen on many of the major websites, although for those who don¡¦t, ¡§a site map is a page which contains a list of all the links within a website, under different categories and headings, just like a table of contents of a book¡¨. Now when a search engine hits the site map page, it gets to see all the links within that website and this enables it to crawl through those pages. It¡¦s just like guiding search engines with the help of a map, in this large universe of internet.
Site maps also help visitors to get an overview of the entire web site, and hence act as a great navigational tool. It helps visitors find specific pages through a single page, for which they might have had to follow several links to reach the desired page. Here are some examples of well designed site maps.

http://www.google.com/sitemap.html
http://www.lycos.com/sitemap.asp

This leads us to the next question, i.e. how should site maps be designed. Designing a site map can be as simple as designing any other static pages without any pictures, graphics, etc. But all effort should be made to keep the structure logical and simple. Its best to browse through the web, and check out a variety of site maps before you decide on what kind of structure you want to follow.

Here are some things you should keep in mind, before designing a site map.

Homepage Link: It is important to give a prominent link from the homepage to the sitemap page, so that visitors and search bots can easily hit the site map page. In fact, preferably there should be a link to the site map page from every page of your website.

Text Links: Plain text links should be used for all the links, as some search bots can have problems crawling through ¡§JavaScript¡¨.

Categories: It is important to organise the contents into well defined categories, and even sub-categories for easy navigation of the user. Although this doesn¡¦t have direct SEO implications, it makes more sense to the user.

Descriptive Content: It is ideal to add some content describing the links, as search engines tend to ignore pages, full of links. It is also important to use your targeted keywords in your descriptive content as well as in your anchor text.

Anchor Text Link: It is important to use page titles as your anchor text, so that you can increase your anchor text back links. This is helpful for search engine optimization as it increases your link popularity.

by:
                daniel chow

At
present Google is the leading worldwide search engine, it supports
multiple languages and has one of the most sophisticated search engine
algorithms around. If you bear in mind Google's unprecedented popularity
and simplicity you will see that your site needs to master its rankings
for your particular key phrases, this will usual mean that other search
engines catch on to your website with similiar positionings. It isnt
easy to understand such a complex system but you need to master it to
give your site an edge in an increasingly demanding market.

Google is a mystery as far as search engine theories go, you
essentially have to try and understand what makes one site rank better
than another. Although the forementioned algorithms are constantly
changing Google themselves have shown link backs play a large roll in a
search engines view of any web page, in order to do well a website needs
to have links from other sites directly to it. Not only that the
websites that link to it are usually respected by search engines
themselves. PageRank is google's own measure of a website, there is much
speculation on how it is composed but a key factor is proven to be back
links, below is a scale that is widely believed to be the backbone of
how it judges your website. The amount of PageRank distributed around
the internet is believed average at 1 for every website, thats why we
begin this at PageRank 2.

PR 2 = 0-6 Link backs

PR 3 = 6-60 Link backs

PR 4 = 60-600 Link backs

PR 5 = 600-6000 Link backs

PR 6 = 6000-60000 Link backs

PR 7 = 60000-600000 Link backs

PR 8 = 600000-6000000 Link backs

PR 9 = 6000000-60000000 Link backs

PR 10 = 60000000-600000000 Link backs

We used a base number of 6 for this example although it is disputed
whether it could be 5 or lower. The amount of back links your website
recieves plays a large role within your search engine positioning but a
strong anchor text and title tag for your links is also key to success,
you can see how to do this as demonstrated below.

a href="http://www.linkhere" title="Keyword Title Text" Keyword Anchor Text

PageRank analyses more than link backs. External links are known to
"leak" page rank from your website, in simple terms - your website can
cast one vote against each websites it links to, if these are external
links it takes from a pool of PageRank that your website has to offer.
It is recommended you either seek recipirocal links from websites you
link to or use other methods like javascript to prevent your PageRank
from being dispersed from your website.

From the
very beginning of the Internet, the number one challenge which all of
us have faced is how to attract qualified visitors to our websites.
Throughout the boom years, one of the most popular solutions was to get
massive funding, relatively easy to get in those days, and "buy"
traffic, by various means.

As an iconoclastic young developer, with ambitions of beating the
"big boys" at their own game, more time than money or the connections to
get it, I sought a less capital intensive methodology to achieve the
same results. Years of study and rapt attention to the pertinent forums,
trying everything that even seemed to make sense (making many mistakes
along the way, and learning much from each one), then carefully
monitoring the results, has lead to many highly workable tools in our
SEO bag of tricks. The outcome of these trial and error methods, (lots
of both) lays the foundation of our SEO services and the basis for the
ongoing growth of traffic to your website and ours.

The simple fact of the matter is this: Expertise in any other form
of writing in no way qualifies one for the type of writing required to
optimize a website for the Internet. There are many sites which have
less than correct punctuation, grammar, and even spelling which rank #1
in their optimized search phrases. This is not to say that I don't think
these things are important, only that to be found in the search
engines, they are not the most important consideration.

The flip side of this argument is equally true. Just because someone
knows all the ins and outs of all of the search engines, can write
algorithms in their sleep, has lunches with Dr. Eric Schmidt and is on a
first name basis with Larry Page and Sergey Brin, does not, in any way,
make them a writer. All of the writing on this site was done as a
collaborative venture between Susan K. Thompson, a professional writer
with strong academic credentials and real world experience, in both
business and marketing, and myself. Was there a lot of editing and
re-write? Yes. Were there disagreements? You bet! Was it worth it? Look
at the record.

Emerald Coast Entrepreneur was launched on May 1, 2005 with most
site optimization in place and submission to the directories just
beginning. With a total monetary investment of less than $100.00, and a
time investment, I'd rather not think about, but which approached 300
hours, the site was given a PR5 ranking by Google on it's first update,
less than 2 months after our launch.

Studies show that over 90% of all online users use search engines to
find what they are looking for, whether products/services, or just
plain old information.

The following twelve points will, I hope, summarize a philosophy,
approach and methodology to the SEO question which is both sound and
effective, along with giving some helpful insight into the industry
itself.

1. Content. Content. Content.
Effective, professional, optimized Copywriting is the single, most
important factor in any SEO campaign. Search engines index websites
based on the content found on each page of the site. With a thorough
understanding of the language and grammatical conventions combined with
intensive research, to find and exploit the market focus, one can move a
website to the upper echelon of the "SERP's" (Search Engine Results
Page) in a methodical as well as ethical manner.

2. Analyze Web Logs.
Measure everything, at least twice, and then check again. While I
would be the first to say that many of the procedures that make up
website optimization are more art than science, one needs to take a very
scientific approach to the results of the effort. This is done by
methodically keeping a record of, and making an analysis of the sites
web logs. There are a number of specialized software which make the job
easier but at the bare minimum, one needs to keep a close eye on the
site visitors and their activity while on the site. No matter how well
planned the strategy, it is largely theoretical until proven by the
results, which can only be measured by the logs, and a thorough analysis
of their content.

3. No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google, or any other search engine.
Those who promise such feats will either optimize for such vague
search term phrases (such as, "green stunted widgets with purple
Polka-dots and icing") that no one will ever likely look for, or they
are making a false claim, which they have no intention of keeping, or
they have an inside edge at Google, something which they will loose,
quickly, when the honest folks at Google find out about it. The other
option, that they will take the money and run, is worth mentioning here
but I'll be polite.

4. Some things are just plain silly.
You don't need to submit your site to 50,000 search engines.
Businesses which offer this service are suspect, at best. 85% of the
search results on the Internet come from one search engine, which, if
you have one link from an established website, or better yet, a
directory, will find your site just fine, on it's own. Four (4) search
engines account for over 90% of the traffic on the web. As for any
supposed benefit which may accrue from being listed in an obscure search
engine in Botswana which specializes in safaris to the Kalahari Desert
and receives 7 hits per day; well, you figure it out.

5. SEO is not Pay-per-Click.
While no one would argue the effectiveness of getting increased
traffic and sales, through a well planned, pay-per-click campaign, the
fact remains that the conversion rates are generally low and they cease
the moment the "pay" stops. With a well planned and executed SEO
campaign, while results may take a bit longer, they continue to produce,
and in fact grow, long after the work is done and paid for. Quite often
we have found that after a thorough optimization of a site, only minor
adjustments are needed on an ongoing basis, primarily related to new
content and/or new items of sale or service.

6. SEO is not witchcraft, Druidism, shamanism.
Neither does it require any special chants, ceremonial fires, or
vestments, though some of us do like to howl at the full moon, on
occasion. There are no "Top Secret" practices which a reputable SEO can
not tell a client, a judge, or his mother, for that matter. The very
nature of the Internet has always been cooperative and there is nothing
about SEO that can't be learned, with a heavy dose of time and money. A
reputable SEO firm will give you an item per item breakdown of just
where the money goes. Be wary if you sense a secretive atmosphere or any
unwillingness to answer questions. While there are technical points
which might take some background to fully understand, if one has a solid
overview of the entire situation, a simple explanation should be easy
enough to come up with.

7. Do-it-yourself SEO.
Yes, you can execute your own SEO campaign and find a reputable SEO
firm to help plan and organize it for you. About one half of my own
clientele do some part of the actual work themselves, or have their
in-house dedicated personnel do it, after discussion of the goals and
aims of the business/website, a thorough website analysis, comprehensive
search phrase research, and focused instruction on the ways and means
of achieving high SERPs. These preliminaries are followed up with a
detailed program of suggestions and methods which the client can then
implement themselves or hire others to perform. Average savings; 30-40%.

8. Phased Implementation.
While many companies spend thousands of dollars per month on Search
Engine Optimization, an alternative is available which will pay
dividends to you in increased sales and leads without the high initial
investment. The most important consideration is to have a reputable firm
handle the initial evaluation and suggested optimization planning
first. The trial and error method will cost much more, in the long run,
with or without the desired result. After studying the plan and
establishing a workable budget you may implement the plan as finances
allow.

9. Remember the old saying, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is."
Never was this more true than in the realm of SEO. While concrete
and measurable gains will always come from a well thought out and
executed optimization strategy, the Internet is a competitive media and
we all want to be number one. Accept that a steady upward movement, over
time, will place you worlds ahead of a flash followed by a crash.

10. A thought to ponder.
At stake, in the race for the top, is the very existence of your
website, your business, and quite possibly your reputation. Beware of
any "shortcuts" or less than ethical schemes that anyone might suggest
to further your business goals. When it's all said and done it is you,
the business owner, who bears the responsibility for any company or
individual you hire. Insist on knowing exactly what the strategy is and
what steps are being performed to implement it. If it seems, in the
least, suspicious, ask for and get an explanation. In this case, not
only is Ignorance not bliss, it could very well be the beginning of the
end for your business.

11. All incoming links are not created equal.
Both the relevance to your line of business and website subject
matter and the PR value of the incoming link determine how valuable they
are to your own PR ranking. With Google starting the trend, nothing new
there, and most of the others following close behind, the days of
grabbing all the inbound links, in any way possible, are gone. Not only
will low ranked and/or irrelevant inbound links not help, they will, in
fact, cause a penalty. Link farms, free-for-all link schemes, automated
link accumulation software, or any other fad that doesn't carefully
screen the links and websites they are coming from will, in the long
run, do more harm than good.

12. It's more than just facts and figures.
The relationship between an online business and SEO is, perhaps, one
of the closest of business relationships. In order to be effective, a
SEO must know not only the facts and figures pertaining to the endeavor,
but s/he must know something of the dreams and aspirations of the
business principals. Things which don't normally come out in a
prospectus are often invaluable information when searching for the
"right fit" into the complex world of the Internet. My own clients
sometimes ask, due to the frequency of my calls and email in the early
phases, "Am I your only client?" I usually laugh and say something to
the effect that until I know your business almost as well as you do,
yes, you are the only one that counts.

by:
                Joe Balestrino

I look at a lot of sites on a daily basis. There are a lot of common
problems I see on sites. Some people may have tags set-up improperly or
use tags that have no real purpose. I have compiled a list of the 5
top do-it-yourself SEO errors. It's safe to say that many
do-it-yourselfers may have at least one of these errors on their sites.
These should help you omit these often costly mistakes and pull you up
in the ranks.

1) Keyword tag – A keyword tag is for keywords, but not for any
keywords. You can’t just stuff this tag with keywords that your entire
site is related to. The tags should reflect keywords only on that
particular page; not the entire site and not every keyword you think
your site might be searched on. Also, you should have no more then 20
words in the tag. You should not repeat any word more than 3 times. If
you sell tickets, for example, don't write: Broadway tickets, circus
tickets, hockey tickets, boxing tickets and so on. Do use Broadway,
circus, hockey, boxing, tickets and so on.

2) Abstract tag – It is sometimes used as a replacement for or
combined with a description tag. However, more and more people are using
these to stuff keywords. Search engines like Google are interested in
what is on the page. More specifically, what visitors can view. In my
opinion, the abstract tag has no place on a site.

3) Description Tag – The whole point behind this tag is to describe
what the “page” is about. Keywords related to the page should be
implemented as well. The limit on words should be 20 – 25. I see many
website owners stuffing this tag with keywords, or having a description
that is entirely too lengthy. Stay within these guidelines and you will
be fine.

4) Title tag – This, to me, is the most important tag. This is the
first tag the search engine reads. It tells the search engine what the”
page” is about. Don't put your web address here. Do not add your company
name in the beginning of this tag either. It should not exceed 60
characters.

5) Content- If you notice, I have been commenting on relevancy to
the “page”, not your overall site. Each page has it’s own keywords. Tag
the title tag, description and keyword tags. All of these keywords
should be the same. Add them to your content as well. Now your page
should be fairly well optimized.

Why do sites fall short? Simple, content is not optimized. Search
engines are, for the most part, pretty basic. You type in a search term
and it retrieves sites containing those terms while also taking a few
other factors into account. So, if your site doesn’t have these terms,
how will you be found? You won’t. Over do it with keywords and you will
experience the same result, but for different reasons. Sometimes reading
everything about SEO can be bad. Trying too many tricks, tips or
methods is like too many cooks spoiling the soup. In the end they can do
more bad than good. These are very basic rules that should be followed
by all. In, doubt? Always consult or hire an SEO professional.

by:
                Anik Singal

Most
internet business owners know the basics when it comes to getting ranked
well in search engines. Put the keyword in the title. Put the keyword
in your headline, the text, etc...

Some get even more "slick" and they insert the keyword many times in
the text. Then others get even more technical and begin an active
linking strategy. By the way, an active linking strategy can be one of
the best ways to get your search engine rankings high - but that's not
what we're talking about today.

Today I want to talk about a little secret that MOST sites don't use
- even some of the most active websites that PAY for their search
engine optimization. The best part is that you can use this trick in
just minutes - you could do it 5 minutes after reading this!

Ok, ok...here it is...

----------------------------------------------------

Insert the keyword in the text of a link

----------------------------------------------------

You want to have about 2 to 5 out-going links with the keyword in the text of the link.

Ok, it's time for example:

Let's say you're optimizing your site for the keyword "big screen
tv" - besides all the other great SEO techniques - you want to have
at-least 2-5 links on that page with the keyword "big screen tv" in the
text of the link.

The link can be any of the following:

   1. A link to another page in your own site.

   2. An affiliate link to another website.

   3. A link to a completely different website.

In other words, don't stress too much on what site you're linking to
(obviously, you want to make sure you link to a relevant page - not
something completely un-related).

Including this strategy on your website will take just minutes.

All you have to do is change the text of some of your out-going links to include your main keyword.

NOTE: This trick won't do anything for you if you aren't using the
other SEO techniques along with it. BUT, if you ARE using other SEO
techniques, this little trick just MAY be what you need to finally bring
up your rankings!

So, hurry now and change your link's text, you better do it before your competition does!

By David Leonhardt, SEO Consultant
Perhaps one of the biggest misconceptions in SEO is that ranking at
Google and Yahoo is all that counts in search engine optimization.
Potential clients come to me with a single goal: "Get me a top-ten
ranking at Google." Some will also mention MSN, and a few will rhyme
off a list of search engines and want to rank well at the top 200 of
them.
It is time to separate fact from fiction.
Yes, your SEO consultant can get you a top-ten placement at Google. But...

1. If the placement is for "dirty brown shoes", it probably won't
help your shoe store one bit, even if I get you the first place ranking.
Few people are actually searching for that term.

2. Being number ten might not help much either, depending on the
term. People searching for "Essential Nectar liquid vitamins", will
probably click on the first result they see, or at least on one of the
"above-the-fold" results that do not require scrolling. On the other
hand, someone searching for "liquid vitamins" might check through two
pages of results to familiarize herself with the options available.

3. If your title tag reads like a cheap list of search terms, it
will not be enticing. For instance, if it reads: "vitamins, liquid
vitamins, multivitamins, multi-vitamins", you might skip over it in
favor of the next result that reads "Liquid vitamins from the Liquid
Vitamin Supplements Store".

4. If your description tag is a mess, people will more likely skip
over your listing, even if it does rank number one, in favor of one that
sounds like what they are looking for. Google and others use the
description tag usually when the term searched for is found in it, so
make sure to include your key search terms in a description tag that
actually reads well.

I recently responded to a forum question, which went something like
this: My site ranks number one for this term at this engine. The term
is searched this many times per day, and the engine has this percentage
marketshare. Can I expect this many visitors?

That's not an SEO challenge; that's a math problem: searches x marketshare = visitors

I responded with a few factors that override mathematics in the SEO
game, including the site's title tag and description tag, as well as
whether the term lends itself to scrolling. I also pointed out that it
depends on the title tags and description tags of the competition, too.

Another factor that makes predicting traffic difficult is the
abandonment factor – how many people click on none of the results
because they get interrupted or confused, or abandon the search for a
new one because they find themselves off-topic or searching too broadly.

It also depends on how many sponsored links there are and how they
are marked. Often at Yahoo and Lycos, for example, there are so many
ads that the average searcher might never scroll a screen or two to see
the organic (natural) results.

And, of course, it also depends on the color of the walls in the
room the searcher is clicking from, the weather outside and how well
they slept last night. But there is little you can do about that.

What you can do is to work with your SEO consultant to choose the
most effective search terms for your business and make sure he develops a
title tag and description tag that sell to both humans and the search
engines. Then make sure he is monitoring not just the rankings for your
key search terms, but also the description used by each of the search
engines.

A good ranking at Google and Yahoo is just one measure of your SEO
consultant's success. A more complete evaluation is that he is your
partner in building long-term, targeted traffic.

                Joe Balestrino

When, shopping for a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) company/specialist you need to be aware of a few things. If someone offers you fast results they may be pulling your leg. If
you aren’t listed on search engines the average time to be index takes
around 4 weeks. Someone offering submissions in less then that is coning
you. Websites that are already listed and are just being updated will
have a faster result.

A guarantee isn’t always reinsurance. Just because a site states
they can get you in the 1 spot doesn’t mean they can deliver. Or, they
may have you listed under an obscure keyword or phrase. Most legitimate
SEO’s will tell you no one can guarantee a top spot on all keywords and
phrases. Search Engine optimization is not an exact science. Trail and
error along with constant tweaking will help bring your site closer to
your goal.

Most SEO’s should give you some information on where your site
stands currently. You links, keywords, where you rank on major search
engines etc.. Or, do one yourself. My article “Google’s Helping hand”
show you free tools that can help you evaluate where you are on search
engines. Don’t go into any SEO work blindly. Know where you stand
before and after.

Price is never an indication of how good a service is. More isn’t always better.

Shop around try to get the most for your money, but be realistic. If
it seems too good to be true then it may just be. Be prepared to shell
out some cash. SEO is not cheap. You should think of SEO as advertising.
It should be contestant as should all of your advertising efforts.

Ask questions! Do not be afraid to ask what will be done to increase
your ranking. Most SEO’s will have no problem telling you what they
will do. They may not want to reveal their whole SEO operation. But,
they will give you some insight to what they will do. Talk to more then
one SEO company. Compare what each has to say. Do some research on your
own. Find out if these companies have been reported to the Better
Business Bureau. If the company or persons have had any articles or
reviews written about them. Ask around. Try to have some idea of the
company or persons creditability.

A few additional things to keep in mind are:
Is SEO there main business or is it a sideline to other businesses.
SEO is a full time job. Especially, keeping up with the constant
changes. Do they have a specialist? Do they outsource? How much do they
really know?
What are there view points on link farms and doorway pages? Will
they do anything to get you links and traffic? Even though search
engines frown on those practices.
Can they explain to you clearly how their plan of action? Are they
looking to take small steps with you? Or, are they trying to sell you
the biggest SEO package possible?

Follow this outline when you are searching for someone to optimize your site. In the end it will be worth it.

Joe Balestrino’s site is www.mr-seo.com he offers affordable SEO,

In
efforts to increase sales and profitability, more and more companies are
turning to online marketing initiatives – specifically, search engine
optimization. Search Engine Optimization or (SEO) is the art and science
of blending technical and marketing skills together into a finely tuned
website that is both search engine-friendly, ranks well for specific
keywords and phrases, and is tailored to your audience from a buyer and
seller perspective.

According to a recent U.S. study, only 20% of all businesses
outsource search engine optimization programs to professional SEO firms.
The remaining 80% either do not conduct search engine optimization at
all or they believe they have the resources and skills to do it
in-house. Of this 80%, it is probable that 90% of these companies can’t
be found on the web – they don’t exist. In order to generate any amount
of significant web visibility, your website must typically rank within
the top-30 results.

So, the question comes down to what is in your company’s best interests?
Conduct your SEO program in-house or out-source it. To answer this
question, let’s first take a look at the knowledge, skills and resources
necessary to implement and maintain a successful search engine
optimization program.

SEO knowledge and skills required

1) Basic understanding of how search engines and directories work.
This may seem overly obvious, but you would be amazed how many
people do not understand how they actually work. This knowledge provides
the foundation for your SEO program.

2) Website design
Although SEO is not completely a technical marketing process, it
does require a fair amount of technical knowledge of what constitutes
search engine-friendly web design. Certain web design elements can
either help your search engine rankings or hurt them. You simply have to
know which is which.

3) SEO experience
This is the most important and most difficult knowledge to obtain.
If you have never implemented a SEO program, then you are in for a big
surprise. Search engine optimization programs require a lot of research
and are extremely time consuming. Most importantly, they require actual
SEO experience. This means knowing what SEO strategies and tactics work
and which ones don’t.

In-house vs. out-sourced SEO programs

If your company is considering conducting your search engine
optimization program in-house, here are some questions to consider.

• Who will be responsible for analyzing, developing, implementing and measuring the success of your SEO program?

• Is this considered the role of your IT department, Marketing department or some other individual(s) within your company?

• Do they have the time, knowledge, and resources to successfully
implement and maintain your search engine optimization program? And do
they really care if it works or not?

IT Department

Typically your IT department handles multiple daily tasks from
trouble-shooting your company’s LAN or WAN to fixing the sales
department’s laptops? Out of a busy IT person’s day, what priority and
focus do you think he or she will commit to for your SEO program? And
even if your IT department has some skills in web design or development,
these skills make up only a small percentage of the knowledge required
for a successful search engine optimization program.

Marketing Department

Typically, your marketing department juggles many marketing projects
at once and faces strict completion deadlines. From handling new print
collateral campaigns to getting ready for new product or service
launches, marketing personnel’s time is spread very thin. In addition,
how knowledgeable is your marketing department in the technical aspects
of web design and search engine optimization? Do they have the time to
become well-versed? Do they have sufficient internal resources? Often
the answer to both questions is no, they do not.

Other individual(s) within your company

Ok, so the responsibility falls onto someone outside of your
Marketing or IT department. Who will that be and why are they
responsible for your SEO program? Providing these individuals with a new
“project of the month,” will typically result in another check mark off
of their monthly to-do list and frustration by top management of why
their website is not producing any sales results.

Summary

From a business standpoint, it makes sense to try to leverage
internal resources to maximize your company’s productivity and
profitability – whenever possible. However, there must be a line drawn
in the sand between knowing what your organization’s capabilities are
and what they are not.

As you can see, there is more to search engine optimization than
meets the eye. In order to implement and maintain a SEO program, you
must acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and resources. This can
be done by hiring a professional search engine optimization firm.
Professional SEO firms have dedicated resources and experience to
support your company’s web marketing initiatives. By leveraging their
experience and know-how, your company can quickly and more efficiently
implement a successful search engine optimization program.

Often,
sites view seo and PPC marketing as exclusive marketing techniques. Each
marketing method has its advocates. In reality, both have a place in
the Internet marketing process. If you intend to pursue a major seo
effort, a PPC campaign is a critical early step.

PPC For Testing

Let’s say you have a site offering a service or product in the
travel market. You’ve put together a healthy budget and decided to go
for broke. Yep, you’re optimizing and trading links in an effort to go
after keyword phrases with major traffic and competition. For instance,
you’ve decided to have a go at “Europe travel”, which has roughly
400,000 searches each month and major competition for high rankings. You
spend two years trading links, adding content and so on. Miracle of
miracles, you pop on to the first page of search results. You start
shopping for your private jet only to realize a very disturbing thing.
You are getting thousands of visits, but few sales. After running
calculations, you find the site is converting at 1 in 10,000.

Houston, we have a problem.

A PPC campaign should be used to test your site against keyword
phrases before you spend the time and money on an seo campaign. The best
platforms to use for your campaign are Google Adwords and Overture.
Yes, click fraud is a problem, but less so on these platforms.

After opening accounts and laying a credit card down at the PPC
alter, you need to give some thought at to how you will test your
keywords. Here’s a hint. The campaign should be designed to test the
keyword phrases, not maximize sales. This may sound like a strange
statement, but keep in mind the purpose of the campaign. You are
determining whether you have picked appropriate keyword phrases for the
seo campaign. So, how does it all go wrong?

With both Overture and Adwords, you have the ability to designate
the reach of your keyword phrases. Most pick the “broad match” option,
which is terrible for testing. With broad match, your advertisements are
going to appear for your keyword phrase AND variations of the phrase.
Since the ad is appearing on a variety of keyword phrases, the results
can give you a false impression of the value of the primary keyword
phrase.

Going back to our example, we start a Google Adwords campaign for
“Europe travel” and use the default broad match option. After a month,
we are happy to find the ads converting at 1 in 70. Having validated the
keyword phrase, we set off on the long seo campaign. But are we really
sure about the validity of the keyword phrase. Since Google has been
known to seriously expand keyword phrases under the broad match option,
how do we know that the true keyword phrase isn’t “European travel”? We
don’t unless we take a few additional steps.

The first step is to limit the PPC advertisements by bypassing the
broad match option. Instead, you want to limit the appearance of the ad
only to searches for the exact keyword phrase. In Adwords, this is known
as the “exact phrase” match. To designate it, you simply place brackets
“[]” around the keyword phrase. Second, you need to track traffic
originating from the ads. This can be done using tracking tools on your
server or through the tracking options offered by each PPC platform.
Regardless of your choice, the resulting data will give a much truer
picture of the value of the particular keyword phrases.

Nothing is more aggravating then getting top rankings, but miserable
conversions. The only way to beat this problem is to test, test, test.
Using PPC campaigns at the outset of an Internet marketing efforts can
save you a lot of headaches later on.

A discussion between 2 SEO´s, Mr. Ethical and Mr. Links, about link building.
Mr. Ethical: There is no need for link building if you know how to
optimize a website properly. It’s all on-site work and some basic
submissions to some directories.
Mr. Links: Yeah that’s what it starts with, but you have to admit
that once you’re done with on-site optimization and the results are not
there yet, you need to do link building in order to increase the
rankings.

Mr. Ethical: Nothing of the sort, Mr. Links. Links will come by them
selves if you have enough content that will attract links naturally.

Mr. Links: So how are these people going to find your website if
links are what you need to be found in the first place? Those couple of
basic submissions won’t give you high enough rankings, if at all, to be
found by people that want to link to your content. It’s a chicken and
the egg problem.

Mr. Ethical: Most websites already have a bunch of back links so
that’s not really an issue. All you have to do is optimize the site and
eventually enough people will find the site to get even higher rankings.

Mr. Links: But what about a site that is in a very competitive
market and most top sites have many back links already? Wouldn’t you
want to get some more links?

Mr. Ethical: Link schemes are unethical.

Mr. Links: Unethical link schemes are unethical.

.
.
.

Mr. Ethical: Natural links are ethical.

Mr. Links: And links obtained through other types of ethical marketing?

Mr. Ethical: Other types of ethical marketing?

Mr. Links: Yes, advertising for example. Isn’t advertising a very natural business?

Mr. Ethical: Bought links are unethical because links need to be relevant.

Mr. Links: What about relevant bought links?

Mr. Ethical: Natural links don’t cost anything.

Mr. Links: And how much time does it take for links to naturally occur?

Mr. Ethical: Doesn’t matter. You have to do everything ethically.
And obviously you don’t know how to optimize a website because you think
you need links to get high rankings.

Mr. Links: But you do too. You just said that most sites already
have a bunch of back links. In fact, you said that natural links will
help you get higher rankings. So you actually agree that for high
rankings you do need links.

Mr. Ethical: Everything needs to be done ethical.

Mr. Links: Does that include selecting clients that are in not the most competitive markets?

Mr. Links: Never mind answering that.
