Adsense, or should I say Adcents is a very easy way to monetize any site. Actually, it is the easiest way, and it can work on any TOS compliant website.

Is it enough though? Haven’t you thought that you are leaving money on the table by going the Adsense way?

Of course Adsense is great, it is hassle free and it is modular. But it makes mere pennies.

There is another way to do the exact same thing as Adsense, but gain a substantial income. This way is also hassle free, its modular, easy to install on the most popular CMSes and most importantly, it generates stable income. No more fluctuations by the whims of advertisers, this thing is as stable as it gets.

Don’t worry, you can still use it along Adsense, it does not interfere at all. But as soon as you see this things income potential, you will never look back.

What are you waiting for? Here it is, signup today and monetize those websites.

Making a forum is nowadays one of the easiest things to do.

Starting one, on the other hand remains hard, the same as it used to be.

A forum is a unique form of site, a unique form of communication. I remember explaining to an older guy what a forum is, and he replied “isn’t it dumb to ask something and get a reply a day later? Or a conversation to last a month?”

No hard feelings, the guy had not lived the experience, he did not get it. If you sit down and think about it, a forum is a hack job of a communication system. It works though, and it works amazingly well.

The problem is, that fora (that is the correct word, not forums) either work or they don’t. And those that work seem to be because of things their owners did not control, like good timing, good ranking for a gadget, a reputable member etc. So, since all these factors are out of your hands, there is nothing you can do to make a forum successful.

Oh. Wait.

Out of your hands? Timing? Good ranking? Reputable members?

How are those things not in your reach?

Of course you can time the forum launch just right. If for example, the forum is for an upcoming game, you can grab a good domain very early. You can leverage on the buzz its company is building anyway, and you can rank for the keywords since not many sites are going for them yet.

Lets take an example, a real niche.

The game Starcraft has a fanatic following. Its sequel, Starcraft 2 has been in production for years, but players still await for it.

Anyway, how would we approach this niche, if we wanted to make a forum about Starcraft 2?

First of all, we need 3 domains. Yes, 3. One for the forum, and two for the supporting blogs.

What we need are keyword domains, so starcraft-2-forum.com is great, starcraft2-forum.com is as well, etc.

We also need a starcraft2news.com, and a starcraft2cheats.com. Those are the supporting blogs.

Now, we install the sites, using Wordpress for the blogs. Of course, the best forum engine is vBulletin, using something else means finding problems down the line.

After that we need simple templates. Anything close to the game’s theme is doable, just pick a clean theme and add some of the game’s graphics to the header. Same thing for the blogs. You don’t need a 500$ design, just something that resembles the game theme (sci-fi, cars, magic, blood, kids game whatever).

Fill up the blogs with as much content as you can find of the game’s release. Depending on how big the game is and how close it is to getting live, this may vary. Make up stuff if you need to, no big deal. You might even get accidental linkbait. Just make sure you know what you are talking about.

Now, the key element are RSS + email subscriptions here. In a prominent place on your blogs you should remind the visitors to signup so they can get all the latest news and buzz about the game. That is propably the most important part of the whole strategy.

The idea behind that is, that while the visitor just searched for the game and stumbled on your site, he is still interested in the game a month later but he (we assume) has a life, he can’t remember to check on the game, or remember your site. That is your job, to remind him and bring him back.

By using Feedburner you can do both RSS and email subscriptions. Just remind the visitors to sign up.

After that, you need to set up a google alert on the game’s title. So do that step, and google will let you know when there is something new about it. Of course, whatever gets published, repost it on your blogs. (use the same content on both blogs, the “cheats” domain is for ranking after release, the “news” is for pre-release.)

Now, to set up your forum, you will need a bit of content. Screenshots, videos, sneak peeks whatever. Make your forum sections accordingly, and setup the forum just like you want it to be. Keep the number of subforums small, dont put any section that is empty. Empty fora are not good looking.

That is it for now, the rest on the next post. Signup at my RSS feed so that you don’t miss it.

I know that many webmasters are afraid of blogs. It is the classic responce “I don’t know what to write on a blog”.

But the problem is blogs are an amazing ranking factor for your site, no matter what kind of site it is. You can either have a plain HTML page, a hot-or-not script, a forum or a niche youtube clone, and a blog will still fit somewhere in there.

Oh yes. Wordpress will slide inside that little space, and slowly but steadily take more and more space until it is pushing the site up almost on its own.

Honestly, I don’t know why wordpress ranks so well. I can come up with a few reasons of course, low page depth, linkbacks and pinging, search engine footprint and some other stuff, but I cannot point my finger and say “that’s why”.

It doesn’t really matter. What matters is, that it does rank. Wordpress can be setup in like 5 minutes, and adding features to it through plugins is a breeze.

Yes, you need a blog on your site. Every site could use a blog. Even if it is at 5 pages, it will help ranking. Just add a subfolder /blog to your site, install wordpress on it and start playing around. It doesnt have to be amazing, it doesnt have to look good, it doesnt even need to have quality content on it. Just write a few posts on your niche, or about your site.

Here are some ideas on what to write on your site’s blog:

How the site started. It might have an interesting story to tell.

What was the site’s inspiration, if it is something unusual.

Updates on software you might have.

Did you add a new section? A new feature? Anything new? Announce it on your blog!

Did you hit a milestone? Are you at 10.000, 20.000, 30.000 members? Announce the achievement.

You get the idea. No matter what site you have, you can add a wordpress blog to it. It will help with visibility, ranking, interactivity, and it is certain to surprise you.

This is kind off a rushed post, an inspiration of the moment. I have figured this out a long time ago, but some people don’t seem to understand it.

SEO is not PPC. SEO traffic must be one of the most valuable that exist. If a guy is looking for Sony Ericsson P1i, chances are he is going to buy one. Those chances are bigger than the guy who is on a tech blog and sees a P1i ad.

Ok, we all know that, you might say. What’s new?

Here is a rule of thumb:

Some offers convert on organic traffic, others convert on PPC traffic.

Honestly, its real. We are talking about the exact same keyword, converting like crazy from organic searches and not so well when bought in PPC networks!

I can yap around all day on the possible reasons, but the truth is, I am not sure why this happens. I can only guess that SEO traffic is “slower” and PPC traffic is “rushed”, whatever that means anyway. And that some offers don’t work well on “rushed” traffic.

Some examples of that are the following.

eBay does not convert well on ppc, but does excellent on organic traffic.

PNP is the same as eBay.

Ringtones are impulse buys, meaning they work excellent on PPC.

Special discount offers work on “rushed” traffic.

Hosting offers do not work well on ppc, while organic converts fine.

This is just to give you an idea of the landscape.

What does this mean in the end?

First of all, it means that you should try both traffic sources whenever possible.

Secondly, it means you need to diverse your skills. If you only do PPC you are losing on relatively easy money. If you only do SEO means you a losing on a huge amount of money.

That is the SEOBalance way of marketing, utilizing everything in a large arsenal of techniques to succeed online. I just had to share this.

If you have been in the game for a while, then you are bound to have some failed launches, half finished sites, underdeveloped, forgotten etc etc.

All those sites are just sitting there, with their pagerank and their linkjuice just going to waste. Or, if you are the kind of affiliate who squeezes everything to the last drop, you have dropped your links on them and forgotten all about them.

Let me introduce to you a great way to gain revenue out of those sites. It is called Tnx. The service is not well known, but it has been around for a while. Tnx is a link selling and buying marketplace. The great thing about it, is that its all automated!

The interface is a bit clunky, but once you get used to it you will do whatever you need to do in no time.

Tnx’s benefits:

Pays by paypal

Can use your earned credits to fuel link buying campaigns, effectively “laundering” useless linkjuice to whatever you need SEOing at that exact moment!

Subaffiliate program that pays percentage. Always nice to have, and it is a service that makes you proud to promote.

No restriction on sites. No more PR >4 etc link marketplaces. Whatever you have, you can monetize it. Of course if it sucks, it will hardly make some change, but it got in, didn’t it?

Choose your preferred anchor text in link buys, and rotate between preferred links. You can put whatever you want, deep linking some, homepage linking the rest, alternating anchor texts. Simple yet powerful.

Multiple campaigns, multiple submitted sites, all managed from one account. Yes, it is simple, yet a great time saver.

SEO a new site within minutes of its creation if you can spare the credits. Wordpress installation 5 minutes, tnx campaign 5 minutes, and you are good to go!

Dynamic link buying. If you have more links ordered than received, tnx’s spiders will crawl its network and give you links as soon as they pop up. It shows as organic growth to the search engines.

Want more?

No, those are enough. Go sign up at Tnx and you’ll see how great a service it is.

It is a huge dilemma every time.

Do you go for keyword rich and easy to rank, or the brandable memorable one? Not to mention that all the good keyword domains are taken, so going that route means you have to settle with dashes or secondary keywords.

And it gets better, because there is no single answer! Sure, going the keyword route will make your life easier, but will it make your site’s career easy? Not really. For a long term well known site, branding is everything. But when starting out, seo is everything! How can anyone win?

There is no single answer as I said, and it all depends on your skills as well as the market. But there are some pointers I can tell you.

First of all, dont use your name. Sure John Chow might have an easy memorable name, but chances are that you dont have one. And if you think your name is easy to remember, talk to someone from the other side of the world and try to get him to learn it. You will fail, trust me.

Secondly, it depends on the site. If you are making a software site for example, which will focus on ranking rather than type ins, going the keyword route is the only way. Even 13downloads.info will work for that, it doesnt matter. You just want that main juicy keyword in there. If you are making a different kind of site, maybe you should consider going for the brand.

Bear in mind though, that going for the brandable domain has its negatives. First of all, you need to do branding! I know, it seems obvious, but many people omit that. You need to do branding, and I assume that you lack the millions corporations spend to build one. So, what can you do?

Building a brand by yourself is possible, but it will be hard. Be prepared. You need to put your brand in everything, and I mean everything you do. Emails, forum accounts, secondary sites, submissions etc. Building a brand by yourself can take up to 2 years. You can speed up the process, by creating something useful to give away, and that ties in with your brand.

Most large well known sites became famous like that. It was a single post, or guide, or how to, or widget, or script that got them up there in the top. There is no recipe for that, no one can tell you “make this and you will get famous”, but you have to try. And if you do actually try, get ready to be surprised.

Summing this up, there is no right or wrong in this decision. Not at first actually. My ideology is to take keyword rich domains for the quick and dirty “want to rank fast in a killer market” projects, and brandable for the sites that I am proud to show my mommy

I know there are a lot of opinions on parking domans. Many people will tell you that it is the lazy man’s way of monetizing, that you are wasting money etc.

Nevertheless, sometimes you do not have the time/resources to develop a site and you just want to park some of your domains somewhere.

That somewhere could always be Namedrive.

I am not sure why, but I love those guys. I have been using them for over 2 years, and I have had no issues whatsoever. Their general philosophy is like Google, make everything automated and let clients do anything they want from their control panel. Yet, when something does happen, support is always there to assist you.

An important thing is this: they have some really nice templates. I know it does not sound like much, but trust me, it matters. Making your parked page different and interesting makes the less computer savvy people think it is an actual site. That increases CTR dramatically.

Also, namedrive uses a Google feed. The good thing with that is you get full coverage in your international traffic, no matter where the visitor comes from, there is a modest ad waiting for him.

The third thing is their stats page. If you have hundreds of parked domains like me, you will love their statistics. Everything is there, your past changes, visitor searches broken down by continent, CPC, everything.

Give Namedrive a try, you will not be dissapointed. Click the banner above this text.

And by site, I mean blog. Nowadays it is stupid not to use a blog CMS for a site, unless your needs are very specific. Even that way, there are plugins that extend the functionality of blogs to the stars.

Get a logo. Seriously. It is called branding, it works even on a small scale, and it extends professionalism and credibility.

Point to your RSS feed. Don’t forget to remind readers to grab your RSS feed. They might forget to check back your site, but your content can miraculously pop up on their readers that way.

Give freebies. Free reports, free guides, free trials of your product. The internet is based on freebies, and a free trial is worth like 10 upsells if the product is actually worth it.

Get social network presence. Its free, its good, and it works.

Be different. If your site is boring, no one is ever going to stay or spread it through word of mouth (or hyperlink).

When you are selling, tell the reader how he can use the product or how will it benefit, no bullshit, no hype. They will appreciate it and gladly buy from your links.

Starting a forum might be one of the greatest internet marketing techniques ever. Think of it, why do people need fora?

To communicate

To solve problems

To talk to like minded people

To chat about an obscure hobby

Those are your motives. If you make a forum based on those motives, then you can make a successful forum. No, it is not easy to make one, I assure you. It takes a lot of time and patience to build up a community. But the funny thing is, once you do make the community, you have a bunch of people ready to be marketed!

As a forum owner, you can send emails to all subscribed members. Do not spam them of course, but an email every 2 months or so, gently reminding them that the forum is there can keep them coming back. Having promotional threads is easy, and pushing products in the niche is a piece of cake because, well, the posters are interested in the niche…

There are three engines you can use for your forum.

IpBoard

SMF forum

vBulletin

There are pros and cons to each of them. SMF is free, has lots of plugins, and just does the job for small forums. IpBoard is much more pretty and robust than SMF, has neat community features and better SEO.

But the real deal is vBulletin. It is the most powerful forum engine, fully customizable and with a huge support community plus third party plugins and themes. It costs some cash, but it is worth it.

In the end, it all comes down to you. But, it is best to start with a solid foundation, or you will regret in further down the road.

Yes, you read the title correctly. SEO is very much overrated.

It really is not that hard. There is only so much you can do for onsite SEO. The rest of the factors are domain age and incoming links. That’s it.

Some of those factors are in your hands, others are not. I know there are controversial opinions on domain age, but my experience tells me that it is a big factor. I did a few tests, using old domains for splogs, as well as newly registered ones. The new ones got sandboxed instantly and buried, the old domains keep ranking to this day.

I also believe that on-site SEO is overrated as well. Google’s philosophy is to take away control from the webmaster, for the simple reason that he can abuse that control. That is why metatags are useless, and that is why onsite SEO is not that big of a factor.

Don’t get me wrong, I work on onsite SEO on all my sites. I just do whatever needs to be done, and forget about it.

But what exactly does need to be done?

Here it is, in a short list:

Wordpress site. The spiders love wordpress. 1st choice, everything else comes second.

Sitemaps. Submit to google webmaster tools

Similar posts plugin.

Permalinks.

Alt tags in images.

Close to 1.0 depth (this means how deep is every page from the homepage, the less, the better)

Keywords in domain. Domain age.

Those are the main ones really. You will read a lot of stuff in the SEO blogosphere, about silo’s and PR sculpting, and putting all files in the same folder, and using subdomains instead of subfolders.

It is all crap.

It is all regurgitated bullshit by people who do not fully comprehend algorithms and computers. Trust me, focus on this short list, master this, and you will be ranking in no time.

Subscribe to my RSS feed, you don’t want to miss what is coming.
