In less than 30 days the Mojo Lounge started driving customers from the web into their lounge, and receiving orders of food to go from new customers who found their reviews on the web. Check it out!

The Mojo Lounge is a popular destination for coffee and food lovers in Columbus Ohio. Without a web presence, they relied strictly on word of mouth to grow their customer base. In less than 30 days we were able to get Mojo on the web - Facebook, Twitter, top search rankings & front page search results on local sites like Yahoo & Yelp. In just the first 30 days Mojo was able to drive enough business to cover their Site-in-a-Box costs for the next 3 months. Now that’s return on investment!

My mother reminded me to call my dad on Sunday, As usual I told my dad that out of all my father’s he was my favorite. The obvious joke is that my dad is my only father, biological that is. American’s live a life of freedom and liberty because of a different group of Fathers who should also be recognized.

Any American defines themselves as supportive of ideals such as freedom, free speech, free religion, equality and the pursuit of happiness. The idea that any government would do anything other than serve the people for whom (not over whom) it governs, is unacceptable.

If not for the Internet, connecting with others around the world and seeing their acts of resistance under oppression would have been impossible. Restriction to information, whether from the inbound filter of our own media or the outbound filter of a controlled media in Iran, would prohibit the connectivity that the web provides.

Internet & mobile technologies that allow instantaneous information exchange such as Twitter, RSS, facebook, text messaging are creating global peer to peer communication grids.

These technologies are revolutionizing communication and achieving a new one world movement – which provides ‘we the people’ the opportunity to determine in which direction the global village will grow. Over time governments will be challenged towards better models of representation rather than ‘governization’. This is the predominant struggle of the 21st century.

This one world movement is not the same movement that governments are trying to achieve, but a movement of the world’s people toward a common consciousness and existence which will embrace the ideas of fulfillment, love, kindness, organization, achievement, responsibility, honesty, transparency, equality, justice, freedom & liberty.

How will we be governed – assuming that it is our decision to make? How will the systems of the future be developed and who will be developing them? With what motives will it be developed and for whom will it have in mind? What new technologies will emerge and which governments will embrace them the fastest?

Let me start by saying that Google has become an integral part of my life, and that I do not condone a lot of the Google bashing that I see in my online internet marketing watering holes. However I do think it is important to hold Google to at least the standards that they hold Webmasters to if the web is going to be a healthy cooperative ecosystem. With that in mind . . . .

I spend a lot more time than probably necessary on understanding and helping companies implement proper nofollow tags. Most clients have no idea what a nofollow is and even fewer understand the difference between the nofollow on a link and the nofollow on a page.

Nor do they understand that a nofollow doesn’t really prevent spiders from following the link, and that in many cases they should be noindexing the subsequent page.

I was surprised to see how Google handles the links on their blog. I understand the nofollow attribute is to used on links that you cannot trust.

Yet on the pages of their blog, there are links to some of the most trusted resources on the web - www.searchengineland.com, www.webmasterworld.com, www.oreilly.com - that aren’t followed.

Aside from the fact that link juice hoarding is lame and interrupts the organic order of the web, Google is also one of the biggest link whales in a link-driven ecoysystem - showing a few sites some love couldn’t hurt.

Disturbingly, the page also links to other Google bloggers on the blogspot domain (a google property) but with followed links (passing page rank).

That’s not an accident, and makes it really difficult to swallow some of Google’s other mandates to webmasters when they themselves are not leading by ethical example. I recognize the challenge in governing the web, which is why it is all the more important to lead by example.

A new form of Site Hijacking has hit the e-streets and may be the single most effective form for knocking a major website out of the Serp's completely, with only a handful of things they can do about it. Learn about this new threat to webmasters.

Are you protected?

Understanding The Newest Hijacking Threat to your website

When setting up a new domain name, you have to choose a server IP where your files are hosted. What if you point your new domain name to an IP address that someone else already has a website hosted on? Well it would probably be a confusing experience to your visitors, sending them to someones website other than your own. Still, this is no biggie and happens all the time with just a simple typo.

Now what if you decided to change the IP address of an old domain name that had picked up a bunch of trust over time (through links, etc) and accidentally point it at someones relatively new website (little trust from links)… It may not seem sinister, unless you didn’t “accidentally” make that typo… If you put your black hat on it becomes pretty obvious what might happen..

You can hijack someones content and out-rank them for it in Google.

What do you do when someone points their domain to your server, effectively hijacking your website?

So, What Really Happened?

One of our clients websites, texascontractor.org was launched a few weeks ago. We launched a few other sites around this same time, all of which are performing well. Solid visitors and traffic, growing as we expected… but that has not been the case with this particular clients site. We’ve been scratching our heads trying to understand why the site has a lot of unusual visits from Russia, and what initially appear to be scrapers. Time to investigate… When performing a Google search for a portion of the homepage content, I was shocked by the results.

Look For Yourself!

My First Thought was “What? That’s not my site! That’s a Russian website!”

Who in the hell is mccmembers.ru, and why is it ranking for my clients content? Did the Russians scrape it, or is something more sinister afoot? When I clicked “repeat the search with the omitted results included” (aka the supplemental index) my clients website showed up…

Fast Train to Supplemental Hell

Great… The last place any webmaster wants to be in: supplemental hell ! And the investigation continues…

Yet Another Paradox in the Matrix

They seem identical! But wait… all of the links were identical as well. The russian website was linking back to my clients website… how does Google not see that my client is the original source of the content. Usually a scraper would take the time to copy all of my pages and also change the links to their own pages.

At first, I still considered this as a scraper, just poorly done. I sent off a DMCA Notice. Soon after, I performed a DIG command on the server , only to realize that the server itself had the same IP as Texas Contractor. NO WAY!!! The russians are actually HIJACKING my clients content, and even link back to where they stole it from.

From Russia With Love? I Think Not!

So now I have this Russian domain name is pointing to my clients server. A quick review of the Russian domain shows me that it has been on the web for 4 years, and it has some links pointing to it. Enough that Google obviously trusts that domain name over mine, causing my clients site to appear as “duplicate content“.

So where do I go from here? One simple solution would be to change the hosting status in Apache from “Dedicated IP” to “Shared IP” thereby putting a Server Error page against mccmembers.ru, but for some webmasters this may not be possible. Also there are certain benefits to having a dedicated IP that would you lose. Below you can see the error page we started to deliver the Russian domain from my clients server.

Owning The Russians Again. Cold War Style.

However, being a webmaster, I have a bit of twisted humor. What webmaster doesn’t? So I decided to do something more appropriate, sort of returning the favor, if you will. I ended up “hosting” their domain with a more fitting landing page.

ARRR! Much better! See it for yourself http://www.mccmembers.ru. Now my client’s site is free from their grasps and we get a good laugh!

To Bring It All Together

This hijacking may not be as complex as the DNS Cache Poisoning, but this type of hijacking can dramatically impact your search engine rankings, and in turn your bottom line. After all, how trusted are you if you’re a company and when someone searches your name, a Russian domain precedes you? What kind of critical loss could happen for your business? People might start logging into the wrong website and inputting highly confidential personal information into the hackers hands.

This brings about a larger question. Who should handle these situations where a domain owner has maliciously or non-maliciously pointed their domain to another domains IP address? Who should it involve? Shouldn’t Google be able to tell who is the real owner of the site? What are your thoughts on this situation? Has this happened to you?
