This is due to a lack of patrons. Some of the owners blame the economy and others suffer because of lack of branding and marketing knowledge. There are three in particular that will be the focus on a new branding series for Michigan based businesses.

One of these businesses had a truly outstanding product. It was a sub like sandwich with superior ingredients and many of them were locally found. But they lacked the initiative to market it properly and to get the word out. Despite the use of Yelp, Facebook and they mostly relied on word of mouth. I drove by this place today and found it to be completely empty. I was unsure if the city had confiscated all of the kitchen equipment like they so often do. If that is the case this is most unfortunate.

There was another business just two doors down in this Wixom shopping plaza that sold fish and chicken. The reviews on this place were never really good and some of them hint that the product was from freezer to table. I walked into this place a couple of times and was not impressed. The service was mixed. When they weren't busy they would wait on you. The second time when I went into this place they were very busy and people were standing out in the lobby. There was maybe 10 people waiting while the radio blared on some metal station.

The last example for the series focuses on a women's clothing company. This one example in particular is an interesting one since the owner was reluctant on how to brand it. There was never any clear cut audience demographic outlined for the store so marketing it to any particular group proved difficult. There was also a problem with how to market this kind of company on the web and through social media with no demographic. The idea was that the clothes were basically for anyone who wanted to wear them.

The idea here was that it would appeal to anyone who found their taste in clothing, "Fun and Fantastic!". The age group was never defined because the owners thought it would alienate any potential sales and they didn't want to be offensive.

Unfortunately something else happened along the way. The woman that ran the place used to crank up the radio very loud and was usually in the back on the phone talking and ignoring who ever walked in. This sort of thing turned people away and also became part of the brand. The idea was not only are we fun and fantastic but we couldn't care less if you walked in or not. This place closed after just 14 months.

THE POWER BRAND SERIES

Ted Cantu of Hot Metro Finds will be looking at what makes a retail store front work and what makes a business tick in these troubled times. Each one of these businesses could have been saved regardless of a perceived recession or the state of the economy. In each case of these businesses could have been saved.

A lot of this comes back to the owners and their willingness to take a failing business and to apply some basic principles. This gets right down to the following areas:

1. Who Is The Audience?

2. What Are They Buying?

3. Identifying Price Point

4. Addressing The Needs Of Your Demographic

And a whole lot more....

Being number one on the search engines is not necessarily going to get your business. It will only amplify your business and get more exposure. Things like addressing your audience, identifying your customer and building rapport with them, (social media) still needs to be taken under consideration.

He wanted to find a way to get his marketing messages out to the public. Like most businesses he didn't want to throw a whole lot of money on typical advertising including pay per click, full page advertising and radio and television.

This radical approach took on a whole new life for his business. It brought on a whole new level of visibility. The big lesson here is that not every video directory out there is going to accept commercials. In fact, a lot of video directories go for the amateurish gross out America's Funniest Videos type of format. But there is a way around it.....

If you come from the unique approach where you are looking to educate or teach your audience it becomes easier to get listed. You can also create convincing information in a series. Since video diretories only let you upload 10 minutes at a time you can easily spread out a mini-series.

You can see the rest of Asset Protection Attorney Joseph Dadich here...
http://www.1estateplanningmichigan.com

Posted by Ted Cantu on Sunday Feb 24, 2008 at 10:44 PM - you can find us at:
http://www.1seomichigan.com/newyorkseo.html

Marketing Workshop - With Minesh Baxi

"Marketing Info With Minesh Baxi !"

I attended several of Minesh Baxi's workshops and seminars during the winter months of 07 -08. But here he outlines strategies that you can implement.

Just recently we had a great seminar about how to recession proof your business. Why do you think Dan Kennedy programs are $2,500 +? Brett McFall is not cheap either. Ever try to learn everything you can about copywriting and find out later you have to hire a consultant or get into someones bootcamp? You buy their experience and to cut down your learning curve.

The rule of thumb is to give out SOME information but not all of it. You want to have some sort of lead capture on your pages. They get the good stuff after they commit to corresponding with you in some form, (either getting on your mailing list or buying a product or service)."

Source: http://911copywriters.blogspot.com

This article needs to be read in its entirety - seriously. If you are out in the field and working with clients then this should make some sense to you. If you work for a company and are holed up in some office cube or, God forbid, in the basement or water heater closet you no doubt have a different experience.

But as an entrepreneur you will run into many situations. I found that a lot of companies who complain about Michigan's bad economy are the same companies who market themselves poorly and do a lot of expected things that do not work, (door hangers, Val Pack, Yellow Pages etc.). Take this with a grain of salt. There are some excellent keypoints on here to consider.

Ted Cantu, posted this on Feb 15, 2008 at 8:20 AM

All New Web Marketing Podcast

ATTENTION ALL YOU TECHNO SCREW HEADS.......

This is a collection about how to market yourself online. C'mon, you know who you are. There are plenty of you out there. I know because I am in the selling field every week and I talk to a lot of people.

The dream is to get to a place in life where your blogs are pulling in people
daily whether you want them to or not. This is marketing at its best. It is for the
most part EFFORT FREE.

But what are the numbers involved?

You can start to expect people subscribing to your blog consistently once you post over 400 - 550 articles. When I say subscribe I am talking about daily subscribers who are finding you on their own and you have to do ABSOLUTELY NO WORK AT ALL. This is where you can really put things in automated pilot. Its a great place to be.

It takes a little work. But its worth it.

Ted Cantu posted this on July 22, 2007 at 9:03 am.

Heres How To Put A Monetery Lift In Your Business

"Need A Profit Boost? Offer a Luxury Version Of Your Services "

Putting your services in different income brackets is a powerful way to create more income. Not everyone is going to go for the same level of service.

Last week, I came across this rather unusual discovery. PEOPLE ARE LAZY. Worse, even when I sell them something they don't necessarily use it. This used to bother me. For one thing it was difficult to get testimonials from people who buy my services and don't bother to use them.

Heres what we discovered:

* All customers under a $2,500 level of service don't actually use our services correctly.
* Most customers under $2,500 have poor level of communication and followup
* Customers under $2,500 are more likely to have poor concepts of "money"

But here is what is interesting. The majority of customers who pay well over this mark all share something else in common. They really want to be taken care of.

Anyone paying over $2,500 shared the following:

* They were better customers
* They listened for instructions
* They carried out our advice
* These customers had better results

What Is Your Definition of Money?

There is a game in Japan called Pachinko which is a lot like pinball with a few obvious differences. Instead of having only one ball you have to play with 100's of them all at the same time. They whiz and fly through the air and land on different holes and you rack up the points. Some fall right to the bottom just like some of the best business opportunities and ideas.

The Detroit economy is a tricky one. Especially if you want to stay out of the rat race and be your own company. There are many pitfalls that one should be aware of. Just like in the game Pachinko you have to be wary of many different ideologies. Its amazing to see how many non-profit groups, civic organizations, churches and social groups try to clamp down their idea of "money" when you run your business.

I tend to steer clear of these types.

Anything under $3,000 dollars you are asking for trouble. Seriously. This is the case for search engine marketing or anything internet related. These are the first group of individuals to fling garbage onto your company.

In the last 18 months we took a poll and this is what we found.

When things go the slightest bit wrong our group recorded theats of:

* Getting sued

* Threats from someone they know who was employed in:

A. The Mafia, (someones been watching too many Sopranos episodes)
B. The Government
C. The Church

"My brother has a sister who knows the..... (insert one of the above)..... and will see to it that you will be.... (insert threat of your choice)."

The interesting thing about these threats is where they originated from. In most cases we gave them a "chore" to do so that it would ensure some kind of success. Seriously.

The customer was asked to get a merchant account, ( so they can recieve online orders) or in other cases they were asked to send out some postcard mailers, (that we designed - all they needed to do was pop them in the mail with some postage). Or they were required to buy some online directory listings to get more traffic pointed to their web sites.

These are simple tasks and were usually met with no response. Instead, we get the threats. The other interesting thing is that there were a lot more threats of a spiritual nature at the $2,500 dollar mark. There were a lot of slanderous scenarios dealing with Christ and the Afterlife at this level. For example, if you wouldn't add on a boat load of FREE STUFF, (more than what is reasonable) then this would somehow force you to loose "points" in Heaven. This is totally bogus but this type of business dealing is alive and well in this country.

No offense to someone who is fairly religious. But this is serious bullshit. Seriously.

You need to make a decision what kind of business, (or in this case, what kind of monkey show) you are trying to run. We have made a sincere effort to weed out the strange, weak minded and clueless with a superior product.

One also needs to consider how much this is going to cost you in the long run. When you add up phone time, meetings, email correspondence you will quickly figure out this type of "business" costs you serious time and money.

POP THE CURB
It is better to jump over this level of customer (dis) satisfaction and leave these tire kickers to someone who has time for it. This is going to save your sanity and keep you in better company.

The most common category for this level of customers fall into the following:

* Church, Mega Church environments
* Multi level marketing groups
* Alternative medicine practitioners
* Alternative healing practitioners, (mind, body and spirit)
The last two are very interesting. These two groups had a very poor concept of wealth creation. It is also notable that these types were terrible marketers. When they would experience a profit loss of ANY size they would blame it on their karma, an angry God, or a past life etc.

Cantu posted this article on July 17, 2007 at 8:44 am and can be found at http://www.1seomichigan.com

Put Some Firepower Into Your Company - With SEO

What Makes This Company Stand Out?

Wondering how you are going to cash in on this exciting time in Internet history?
The new IPHONE is going to revolutionize the way you do business.
