We all know that Social media is the "next big thing." But have you considered how it affects SEO?

As you've probably heard Google is pulling in relevant Tweets into its index. That means that if you Tweet your keywords it's going to help your sites position in search, provided you also link the keyword to your site.

And of course Google has come out with +1 button, which seems to be a bit along the lines of the Facebook "like" button.

Although, until I actually see it working in the wild, and on my own site, I'm going to withold judgement.

Google Improves Search Engine Optimization Key Word Tool

Over the last 2-3 days Google has changed it's keyword tool so that rather than just showing a shaded bar to indicate volumes for a key phrase it now shows actual search volumes.

As you'd expect the Internet Marketers all over have started to froth at the mouth with delight at this new marvel. We've had volumes from other tools before but there's always been a debate as to how accurate those search volumes were.

Now with Google showing search volumes we can be certain that they're accurate in Google's tool. However, that means the key word tools I described in a previous post need to change, either to present analysis of search volumes (probably based on Google's own results) or to do other things related to key phrases.

The accuracy we get now means that we can begin to track the real search volumes of a lot of different key phrases. So I'm quite sure we'll have tools adapted to extract search volumes from Google and then store them to show how the volumes change over time. A very powerful way of choosing exactly when to use Pay Per Click and when to stop using it.

So go and check out the new, improved Google search tool, find your niche and sell, sell, sell!

Do You Know Which Of These Is The Best Keyword Research Tool?

Lee Odden ran a poll to discover the best web-based keyword research tool as voted for by the Search Engine Optimization community.

He had 154 votes for a number of different makes of keyword research tool.

Interestingly the top 5 took 77% of the vote.

And those top 5 included (in alphabetical order):

Google Keyword Tool
Keyword Discovery
SEO Digger
WordZe
Wordtracker

There were no real surprises but it made an interesting post with its follow-on comments.

Which one do I think is the best tool? Well I'd have to vote for Wordtracker. Did it win? Well you need to check the results on Lee's Blog

SEO By Checking Keywords

I've just posted on my other blog Marketing for Power Packed Business Growth about Duncan Bannatyne and the fact that I've had loads of hits looking for him.

I also noted that SEO marketers find search statistics interesting.

Google Zeitgeist - Top 10 Searches By Country

With search you can see what information, that is through keywords, people are checking in your niche. You can then edit your web copy for those keywords.

In the top 10 in most countries Google December 2006 statistics displayed on the Google Zeitgeist page, were either Angelina Jolie, Paris Hilton, or Britney Spears.

I've already blogged about the importance of keyword research. This is just another avenue.

SEO World Championships - What's It Mean?

I've entered for the SEO World Championships where all the competitors attempt to get into the top 10 on Google, Yahoo and MSN for a weird phrase.

This year it's "Globalwarming awareness2007".

So everyone feverishly works to get their entries indexed, linked and optimized to ensure that they gradually float to the top of the search pages. Or more preferably shoot to the top!

My own entry is through a blog called globalwarming awareness2007 project.

In it I'll be talking about global warming and raising awareness for 2007, of course.

And we'll see how things go.

The Coolest Guy On The Planet

I blogged about the coolest guy on the planet on Monday on this blog.

Then I copied that post to change it to make another related point today.

But I forgot to change the date, so it overwrote the original post...

Arghh!!

So if you were feverishly searching for the original post -- it's gone.

Now normally that's not a problem because I always save a draft.

Erm, that is I usually save a draft. So of course this time I hadn't and there we go no post.

The point?

Remember, editing an old post to create content for a new one is dicey. Better is just to copy the original HTML and then paste it into a brand new (empty) post.

What I said in the original post was along the lines of ...

I decided to use "the coolest guy on the planet" as a way to test out various ways copy and other techniques can boost or detract from, a sites Google rank.

After my original flurry of activity and posts I'd ended up at 26th position on search. Then I'd let it lie and added not further information or links or anything else. I dropped into the 40's.

I then pointed out that I should add another post about the coolest guy on the planet and/or some links and then come back and see the result.

I did do that and the result for the coolest guy on the planet is now posted on the Monday 15th January post.

Blogging Code Of Conduct Pointless

Jason Lee Miller writing for webpronews.com reports on a suggestion that bloggers should follow a code of conduct.

He raises some good points from interviewees and I'd like to put my 10 pence worth.

Firstly, as Jason says, there is already a blogging code of conduct.

All serious bloggers follow it. If we deviate from the truth we soon get found out and the whistle is blown. Unlike other media blogs are policed by their readers.

Secondly, again as Jason writes, the blogging community is not just made up of people in the UK or Europe. It's worldwide.

How on earth are you going to get everyone to agree to a common code of conduct that layers of bureaucracy will create and attempt to police at vast cost.

At this point the European Union springs to mind as a good example to avoid.

Thirdly there are millions of blogs out there. Probably too many for any one person to see in their life time. How would they realistically know that a blog wasn't following the code of conduct. Wait let me guess...

Ask the readers to blow the whistle!

Just like they do now.

My advice to the dabblers in Internet stuff they don't appear to understand - leave it alone unless it breaks!

Has Your Site Disappeared From Google?

In the Unofficial SEO Blog Navneet Kaushal shows Adam Lasnik's view of supplemental results in Google.

Some people had thought that Google was penalising pages by moving them to the supplemental results index. So that they disappeared from the main search results.

Adam suggests that Google is not penalising sites but moving those that don't have many links to the supplemental index.

Personally I'd rather stay in the main index please! But it does come down to getting those all important links from "good" sites.

I'll discuss what "good sites" means in due course. If people show an interest in the subject.

The bottom line? Get more links into your web site!

What You Get From Business Trade Shows

In the midst of loads of work and my car having to be looked at by the AA twice, needing a new coil, new spark plugs and new HT leads I went to the B2B exhibition at GMEX in Manchester on Wednesday.

I had intended going on the Thursday too but things had got silly busy by that point so there was no way I could justify it.

I did enjoy the exhibition and had my portrait done, or at least a cartoon of me.

Was the conference worthwhile?

I got to see Jacqueline Gold interviewed by Greater Manchester Chamber of Conference. So yes.

I also met a few good contacts. Two of whom we should be able to do some good business with...

Time will tell.

Does Your Web Site Make These 6 SEO Mistakes?

You've seen the search engine optimization tips...

Now here are some common mistakes!

Not using the H1 tags for headings. The search engines give more weight to words or phrases that are emphasised because they reckon they're more important on that web site. Therefore they're likely to be what the searcher is looking for.
Using images for buttons. Search engines can't read images so the button text can't be used for optimization.
Pages that aren't linked to the home page. Without a link it's unlikely that the search engine spider will find the pages.
Images without alt text labels. If you don't put an alt text label for an image people who use spoken browsers won't know what the image is and also it wont be indexed in the search engines either.
Using the same Title tag for every page. Search engines use the title tag to check whether keywords they're searching for are at all relevant to that page.
Assuming which keywords to optimize your web pages for. You need to know which words get searched on using a keyword checker such as Good Keywords or the Overture keywords checker

Mistake 6 is especially relevant to business owners or those who've been in a particular business sector for a long time.

Why?

Because they know everything about their industry, their products and their competitors products.

But they rarely know what keywords people are using during their searches on the Internet.

I once made the mistake of thinking the keywords a business owner was using were those used by his target market.

Wrong!

Well, not completely wrong, but it did mean I had to do a lot more work to include the correct keywords.

Are Your Web Pages Making These Mistakes?

Search engine optimization is great for getting traffic to your web site.

What if your page had something on that annoys your visitor?

In a survey carried out in July 2005 Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS) asked shoppers the things they found most annoying.

The survey discovered the following items that people found extremely annoying:

Those pop-up ads (83.8% of people surveyed)
needing to install software to use the site (72%)
non-working links (66.2%)
Required to register/log on before viewing the site (61.1%)
Pages that load slowly (57.3%)
out-dated content (56.5%)
hard to navigate (55.4%)
poor site search tool (52.4%)
Little or no contact information (50.2%)
back button unavailable (49%)
Use of too much flash and animation (41.5%)
text that moves (33.5%)
audio playing automatically(30.1%)
poor appearance (28.3%)

While these "mistakes" or irritations don't do much for Search engine optimization they do stop users from using or bookmarking sites.

And after all being number 1 on Google doesn't count for anything if they don't use your site when they get to it does it?

Can Subdomains Help With SEO?

A domain name that contains one or more of your major keywords is going to get better ranking than using a domain name without your keywords in it.

However, a further refinement is to look at using sub-domains.

For example rather than using a single domain structure like:

your.site/advertising
your.site/pressroom
your.site/optimization

You could use subdomains, for example:

advertising.your.site
pressroom.your.site
optimization.your.site

This is a current discussion over at Search Engine Watch.

I recommend using subdomains when you have substantial unique content for each subdomain so they're really almost mini web sites on their own.

Otherwise I would tend to use the initial single domain structure and make sure that all pages are accessible from the home page with 2 clicks. That usually means creating a site map and placing its link on every page.

As noted at Search Engine Watch there may be good marketing reasons for you to decide to use subdomains. So review the need for subdomains as part of your initial web site creation and review strategy.

Top 5 Tips For Blog SEO

I've been talking about how a blog (associated with your own web domain) can really help your web site in the search result rankings.

Certainly my other blog Power Packed Business Growth proves that with a post on top 25 marketing sites. Where I show that originally my Alexa ranking (how popular a site is) was 5,422,486 and now my rank is 863,344.

(Note: Today it is 667,571 - so it's continuing to improve.)

The 5 Top SEO Tips For Blogs

So what are the top tips for making your blog search engine optimisation strategy help your site succeed? They include my favourites:

Post interesting content that your target clients want to read. This seems a no-brainer but believe me you can see some absolute drivel if you want!
Make sure you set up a target for the number of posts per week because Google loves fresh content. It may be 1,2,3 or 7, or more posts per week. Just be sure that it's often enough but not so often people unsubscribe in droves.
Allow time to comment on other related blogs. That way if your comment is interesting, insightful or helpful people are encouraged to look at your blog. In addition you're creating a link back to your own blog.
Allow comments on your blog. That way when people leave comments you get a dialogue . That can encourage other people to read the post too and link back to it. Make sure you moderate comments, otherwise you could get stupid or spam comments.
Write articles that link to your blog. Again if they're interesting people look up your blog and may link to it themselves.

Allow Blog Subscribers

Finally, a sixth bonus tip, make sure your reader can subscribe to your blog with RSS or email. I use Feedburner for RSS and email and I'm extremely happy with the way it works.

Feedburner allows people to read your posts without visiting your blog and if they like what they see they can comment on it in their own blog. Usually blog etiquette means people provide a link back to the original content.

SEO Copywriting Using Links For More Traffic

My main blog (Marketing For Power Packed Business Growth), aside from being a mouthful to say has been gradually increasing in numbers and I now get hundreds of views per month.

Whenever I've decided to write copy that revolves around a specific keyword that post has attracted more readers.

You know that one of Google's major elements for working out search rankings is how important the content of a particular page is for keywords.

And funnily enough a lot of weight is given for links from other sites with the keyword in the link text.

So for example I've done a post on creating better business cards on my other blog.

Let's say someone searches for "Business Card".

if I simply put "post at my other blog" when I refer to the business card posting that is the only part Google will see in linking to that blog post on business cards.

If I put "Create A Better Business Card" as the link text to the blog posting that really helps the search rankings because Google has picked up the key phrase (Business Card) and because an external link "recommends" the site the search ranking for the page goes up.

Get Into Search Engines In Days

Some sites have waited months to get into search engine results.

What did they do wrong?

Usually they simply put the web site up and hoped that people would find it. In just the same way as the makers of the World's best mousetrap believed that all mouse haters would beat a path to their door. And they believed it right to the moment they went bankrupt.

To get your site spidered by the search engines you need a search engine optimization strategy that includes rapid entry into search results.

How Can You Get Into Search Engines Quickly?

You can use one or more of these tactics to achieve pretty quick results:

Create a blog on www.blogger.com. Post useful content to it while your site is being built. Then as soon as it's online create some new posts linking to the your new site
Write some articles and link back to your web site url in your resource box.
Write press releases about your business and again link back to your web site
Post on forums and ensure your sig contains your web site URL. Make sure the forums are searched by the engines too!

By the way don't put up a holding page that says:

This is a holding Page
Site still being built
Or other equally obvious statements.

It's better to have a reasonable home page that displays some useful information and which can be incorporated into the full web site when it's launched.

Rather than just one tip I'm giving you 5. They all come from another SEO expert, Andy Jenkins whose partnership with Brad Fallon has just created a massive buzz about their SEO coaching program on the site I've blogged about before: Stompernet .

Right. Let's see about hitting Google to rank you higher in the search engines.

First of all, don't hire a search engine optimization (SEO) company until you understand about Search engine optimization.

That's because there are a huge number of SEO companies out there charging money and learning while they do it at your expense. And in some cases not even actually improving your rankings.

Because I understand and use SEO myself I've seen awful Search Engine Optimization, both in content and link strategy for quite a number of sites. Even some web designers who should understand the principles who are completely clueless.

Here are 5 points that will help you in choosing and working with an SEO company.

1. From personal experience the 80/20 rule applies to SEO. That is 20% of the work will account for 80% of the results.

So ask for an itemised quote so you can check you're not paying too much for the 80%.

Some SEO experts still tell you they'll spend hours checking and redoing your site's keywords and meta tags. There's no real evidence that such tinkering helps your rankings.

Simpler things, such as making sure all your pages can be indexed by the search engines is more important. Obviously you still want to do the other 80%, but make sure that the priority (and cost) is on the effort that gets the best results.

2. SEO firms say only black hat SEO companies or scammers guarantee rankings. However I guarantee you can be ranked in the top 10 on Google.

How...?

It all depends on the amount of money you're willing to spend and the time you're able to wait for the results. After all if an SEO firm believes they can improve your rankings, why not offer you a guarantee?

3. You can see immediate results. Many SEO experts tell you it takes months to get results.

Untrue. It depends on your keywords and what you're doing and you can often see results within a week.

Obviously highly competitive keywords take longer.

If the SEO expert looking to sign you up tells you it'll take three months to get any results they're simply looking for a long term contract.

4. SEO isn't too complicated to explain to the layman. In this case you! SEO experts like to blind people with science and make it sound very complicated.

True there are some complexities. But equally there are quite a few of the important tasks that are straightforward to explain. Get some explanation that way you can compare what experts tell you and check for consistency and true expertise.

5. You've probably heard that links to your site are the most important factor in SEO. That means a lot of focus needs to be on getting links into your web site. Having an SEO firm "optimize" your site is important for the first few months of going live but not as vital as getting good links to your site.

SEO copywriting what's it all about?

Is it really an enormously big mystery that normal mortals shouldn't venture into?

The short answer to that is "RUBBISH!"

There's no reason at all that the average company can't do there own SEO copywriting. It does take time and research to do so. But other than that it really is straight forward.

What you really pay for with a good SEO copywriter is their ability to research keywords that you might not even think about (and that get good traffic) and incorporate them smoothly into your copy.

Additionally there are a number of tactics, almost completely unrelated to your web site, that improve your web rankings.
