Building are growing SEO more aware of the need to understand and implement at least the basics of search engine optimization (SEO). But if you read a variety of blogs and websites, you’ll quickly see that there’s a lot of uncertainty over what makes up “the basics.” Without access to high-level consulting and without a lot of experience knowing what SEO resources can be trusted, there’s also a lot of misinformation about SEO strategies and tactics.

1. Commit yourself to the process. SEO isn’t a one-time event. Search engine algorithms change regularly, so the tactics that worked last year may not work this year. SEO requires a long-term outlook and commitment.

2. Be patient. SEO isn’t about instant gratification. Results often take months to see, and this is especially true the smaller you are, and the newer you are to doing business online.

3. Ask a lot of questions when hiring an SEO company. It’s your job to know what kind of tactics the company uses. Ask for specifics. Ask if there are any risks involved. Then get online yourself and do your own research—about the company, about the tactics they discussed, and so forth.

4. Become a student of SEO. If you’re taking the do-it-yourself route, you’ll have to become a student of SEO and learn as much as you can. Luckily for you, there are plenty of great web resources (like Search Engine Land) and several terrific books you can read. (Yes, actual printed books!) 5. Have web analytics in place at the start. You should have clearly defined goals for your SEO efforts, and you’ll need web analytics software in place so you can track what’s working and what’s not.

6. Build a great web site. I’m sure you want to show up on the first page of results. Ask yourself, “Is my site really one of the 10 best sites in the world on this topic?” Be honest. If it’s not, make it better.

7. Include a site map page. Spiders can’t index pages that can’t be crawled. A site map will help spiders find all the important pages on your site, and help the spider understand your site’s hierarchy. This is especially helpful if your site has a hard-to-crawl navigation menu. If your site is large, make several site map pages. Keep each one to less than 100 links. I tell clients 75 is the max to be safe.

8. Make SEO-friendly URLs. Use keywords in your URLs and file names, such as yourdomain.com/red-widgets.html. Don’t overdo it, though. A file with 3+ hyphens tends to look spammy and users may be hesitant to click on it. Related bonus tip: Use hyphens in URLs and file names, not underscores. Hyphens are treated as a “space,” while underscores are not.

9. Do keyword research at the start of the project. If you’re on a tight budget, use the free versions of Keyword Discovery or WordTracker, both of which also have more powerful paid versions. Ignore the numbers these tools show; what’s important is the relative volume of one keyword to another. Another good free tool is Google’s AdWords Keyword Tool, which doesn’t show exact numbers.

10. Open up a PPC account. Whether it’s Google’s AdWords, Microsoft adCenter or something else, this is a great way to get actual search volume for your keywords. Yes, it costs money, but if you have the budget it’s worth the investment. It’s also the solution if you didn’t like the “Be patient” suggestion above and are looking for instant visibility.

11. Use a unique and relevant title and meta description on every page. The page title is the single most important on-page SEO factor. It’s rare to rank highly for a primary term (2-3 words) without that term being part of the page title. The meta description tag won’t help you rank, but it will often appear as the text snippet below your listing, so it should include the relevant keyword(s) and be written so as to encourage searchers to click on your listing. Related bonus tip: You can ignore the Keywords meta tag, as no major search engine today supports it.

12. Write for users first. Google, Yahoo, etc., have pretty powerful bots crawling the web, but to my knowledge these bots have never bought anything online, signed up for a newsletter, or picked up the phone to call about your services. Humans do those things, so write your page copy with humans in mind. Yes, you need keywords in the text, but don’t stuff each page like a Thanksgiving turkey. Keep it readable.

13. Create great, unique content. This is important for everyone, but it’s a particular challenge for online retailers. If you’re selling the same widget that 50 other retailers are selling, and everyone is using the boilerplate descriptions from the manufacturer, this is a great opportunity. Write your own product descriptions, using the keyword research you did earlier (see #9 above) to target actual words searchers use, and make product pages that blow the competition away. Plus, retailer or not, great content is a great way to get inbound links.

14. Use your keywords as anchor text when linking internally. Anchor text helps tells spiders what the linked-to page is about. Links that say “click here” do nothing for your search engine visibility.

15. Build links intelligently. Begin with foundational links like trusted directories. (Yahoo and DMOZ are often cited as examples, but don’t waste time worrying about DMOZ submission. Submit it and forget it.) Seek links from authority sites in your industry. If local search matters to you (more on that coming up), seek links from trusted sites in your geographic area — the Chamber of Commerce, local business directories, etc. Analyze the inbound links to your competitors to find links you can acquire, too. Create great content on a consistent basis and use social media to build awareness and links. (A blog is great for this; see below.)

16. Use press releases wisely. Developing a relationship with media covering your industry or your local region can be a great source of exposure, including getting links from trusted media web sites. Distributing releases online can be an effective link building tactic, and opens the door for exposure in news search sites. 17. Start a blog and participate with other related blogs. Search engines, Google especially, love blogs for the fresh content and highly-structured data. Beyond that, there’s no better way to join the conversations that are already taking place about your industry and/or company. Reading and commenting on other blogs can also increase your exposure and help you acquire new links. Everybody needs SEO tools For search engine marketers working on any level, 10 page site or a 10 million page site tools are essential. They save us time, they help us diagnose issues, and they give us a peek into what our competitors are doing. They can even give us a peek into what the search engines are doing (more on that in a future article).

This article will outline a selection of tools I feel are most useful for enterprise-level SEOs working on large, complex websites. These are the tools we use every day, and the tools we recommend to our clients. This is not an exhaustive list; I’ve tried to include a selection of the most useful tools for enterprise-level search work, but there are many more.

Today we’ll focus on SEO tools for the browser. In follow-up articles we’ll cover web-based tools and client-side applications, respectively.

Chromium SEO tools

Our main browser of choice for SEO is Firefox, because of the wealth of plugin options available. However, Google’s Chrome is an excellent and very fast browser and the only reason I don’t use it more is the lack of plugins available that are already on Firefox. This will change, however, and I’m already using a couple of excellent tools on Chromium, the open source version, which has some nice extensions available. Of special interest are META SEO Inspector, which features a small overlay with a few different data points, and SEO SERP, which shows where domains rank based on a keyword.

This is a rough outline of my verbal remarks while giving a presentation at the Software Industry Conference. Regular readers of my blog will notice it has a lot of overlap with previous posts on the topic, but I thought posting it would save presentation watchers from having to take copious notes on URLs and expand the reach of the presentation to people who couldn’t attend this year.

Brief Biography

My name is Patrick McKenzie. For the last six years I was working in Japan, primarily as a software engineer. In the interim, I started a small software company in my spare time, at about five hours a week, which recently allowed me to quit my day job. Roughly half my sales and three quarters of my profits come as a result of organic SEO, and the majority of the remainder come from AdWords. This lets them, for example, teach a unit on chemistry and then, as a fun review game, call out the names of compounds like “ozone” and have students search out the chemical symbols on their bingo cards. Students enjoy the game because it is more fun than drilling. Teachers enjoy the game because it scales to any number of students and slides easily into the schedule. However, making the cards by hand is a bit of a pain, so they go searching on the Internet for cards which already exist and find my website. I try to sell them a program which automates card creation.

SEO In A Nutshell

People treat SEO like it is black magic, but at the core it is very simple: Content + Links = You Win.

Content: Fundamentally, users searching are looking for keywords, and Google wants to send searchers to content which is responsive to the intent of the searcher. Overwhelmingly, this means to content directly responsive to the keywords. This is particularly true on the long tail, meaning queries which are not near the top of the query frequency distribution. Many more people search for “credit cards” than for “How do I make a blueberry pie?”

For the most popular queries, the page that ranks will likely not be laser-targeted on “credit cards”. However, for the long tail, a page that is laser-targeted will tend to win if it exists. The reason is that Google thinks that your wording carries subtle clues of your intent, so it should generally be respected. Someone looking for “How to make a blueberry pie?” isn’t necessarily as sophisticated a cook as someone who searches for “blueberry pie recipe” — they might not even be looking with the intention of making a blueberry pie, but rather out of curiosity as to how it is made, and so a recipe does not directly answer their intent.

Links: With billions of pages on the Internet, there needs to be a way to sift the wheat from the chaff and determine who wins out of multiple close pages. The strongest signal for this is how trusted a site and how trusted a page is, and this is overwhelmingly measured by links. A link from a trusted page to another page says “I trust this other page”, and the aggregate graph shows you which pages are most trusted on the Internet. Note that trust is used as a proxy for quality because it is almost impossible to measure quality directly.

It is important to mention that links to one bit of content on your site help all other content — perhaps not as much as the linked content, but still substantially. Wikipedia’s article on dolphins doesn’t necessarily have thousands of links pointing to it, but over their millions of articles like the History of the Ottoman empire, they have accumulated trust sufficient that a new page on wiki is assumed to be much better than a new page on a hobbyist’s blog. Note that because Wiki ranks for nearly everything they tend to accumulate new citations when people are looking for someone to cite. This causes a virtuous cycle (for Wiki, anyway): winners win. You’ll see this over and over in SEO.

Despite this equation looking additive, SEO very rarely shows linear benefits. Benefits compound multiplicatively or exponentially. Sadly, many companies try to develop their SEO in a linear fashion: writing all content by hand, searching out links one at a time, etc. We’ll present a few techniques to do it more SEO Tools Video efficiently.

The Biggest Single Problem

The biggest single problem with software company’s SEO is that they treat their website like a second class citizen. The product gets total focus from a team of talented engineers for a year, and then the website is whipped up at 2 AM in the morning on release day and never touched again. You have to treat your website like it was a shipping software product of your company.

“For loops?” Yes, for loops. You’d never do calculations by counting on your fingers when you have a computer available to do them for you. Hand-writing all content in Notepad is essentially the same. Content should be separated from presentation — via templates & etc — so that you can reuse both the content and presentational elements. Code reuse: not just for software.
Scalable Content Generation

Does anyone have a thought about how large a website’s optimal size should be? 10 pages? A hundred pages? No, in the current environment, the best size for a website is “as large as it possibly can be”, because of how this helps you exploit the long tail. As long as you have a well-designed site architecture and sufficient trust, every marginal topic you cover on your website generates marginal traffic. And if you can outsource or automate this such that the marginal cost of creating a piece of content is less than the marginal revenue received from it, it makes sense to blow your website up.

This is especially powerful if you can make creation of content purely a “Pay money and it happens” endeavor, which lets you treat SEO like a channel like PPC: pour in money, watch sales, laugh all the way to the bank. The difference is that you get to keep your SEO gains forever rather than having to rebuy them on every click like PPC. This is extraordinarily powerful if you do it right. Here’s how:
Use a CMS

The first thing you need to enable scalable content generation is a CMS. People need to be able to create additional content for the website without hand-editing it. WordPress is an excellent first choice, but you can get very, very creative with custom CMSes for content types which are specific to your business if you have web development expertise.

Note that “content” isn’t necessarily just blog posts. It is anything your customers perceive value out of, anything which solves problems for them. That could be digitizing your documentation, or answering common questions in your niche (“How do I…” is a very common query pattern), or taking large complex data sets and explaining their elements individually in a comprehensible fashion. Also note that it isn’t strictly text: you can do images and even video in a scalable fashion these days.

For example, using Flickr Creative Commons search, you can tap millions of talented photographers for free to get photos, so illustrating thousands of pages is as simple as searching, copying, and crediting the photographer. You can use GraphicsMagick or ImageMagick to create or annotate images algorithmically. You can use graphing libraries to create beautiful graphs from boring CSV files — more on that later.

The reasons why you’d use a CMS are they make content easy to create and edit, so you’ll do more of it. Additionally, by eliminating the dependency on the webmaster, you can have non-technical employees or freelancers create content for you. This is key to achieving scale. You can also automate on-page SEO optimization — proper title tags, interlinking, etc — so that content creators don’t have to worry about this themselves.
Outsource Writing

You are expensive. English majors are cheap. Especially in the current down economy, stay at home moms, young graduates, the recently unemployed, and many other very talented folks are willing to write for cheap, particularly from home. This lets you push the marginal cost of creating a new page to $10 ~ $15 or lower. As long as you can monetize that page at a multiple of that, you’ll do very well for yourself. Demand Media is absolutely killing it with this model.

Finding and managing writers is difficult. If you use freelancers and find good ones, hold onto them for dear life, since training and management are your main costs. Standardize instructions to freelancers and find folks who you can rely on to exercise independent thinking.

You can also get content created as a service, using TextBroker. Think of the content on your website as a pyramid: you have a few pages handwritten by domain experts with quality off the chart, and then a base of the pyramid which is acceptable but perhaps not awe-inspiring. At the 4 star quality level, you can get content in virtually infinite quantity at 2.2 cents per word. You can either have someone copy/paste this into your website or do a bit of work with their API and automate the whole process.

You can use software to increase the quality of outsourced content. For example, putting a picture on it automatically makes it better. You can automate that process so your editors can quickly do it for all pages. You can remix common page elements — calls to action, etc — which are polished to a mirror shine with the outsourced content. You can also mix content from multiple sources to multiply its effectiveness: if you have 3 user segments and 3 features they really value, that might be 9 pages. (If you use 2 features per page, that is 18. As you can see, the math is gets very compelling very quickly.)
Milk It

Now that you’re set up to do content at scale, you can focus on doing it well. The best content is:

Modular: You can use it in multiple places on the website. You paid good money for it. If you can use it in two places, the cost just declined by half.

Evergreen: The best possible value for an expiration date is “never”. Chasing the news means your content gets stale and stops providing value for the business. Answering the common, recurring, eternal problems and aspirations of your market segment means content written this year will never go out of style. That lets you treat content as durable capital. Also, because it tends to pick up links over time, it will get increasing traffic over time.

The first piece of content I made for my website took me two hours to write. It made $100 the first month. Not bad, but why only get paid once? It has gone on to make me thousands over the years, and it will never go out of style.

Competitively Defensible: One of the tough things about blog posts is that any idiot can get a blog up as easily as you can. Ideally, you want to focus on content which other people can’t conveniently duplicate. OKCupid’s blog posts about dating data are a superb example of this: they use data that only they have, and they’ve made themselves synonymous with the category. No wonder they’re in the top 3 for “online dating”. Proprietary data, technical processes which are hard to duplicate, and other similar barriers establish a moat around your SEO advantage.

Process-oriented: If something works, you want to be able to exploit it in a repeatable fashion. Novelty is an excellent motivational factor and you can’t lose it, but novelty that can be repeated is a wonderful thing to have. You also want to have a defined step where you see what worked and what didn’t, so that you can improve your efforts as you go on.

Tracking:

Track what works! Do more of that! Install Google Analytics or similar to see what keywords people are reaching for on your site. Keywords (or AdWords data) are great sources of future improvements. Track conversions based on landing page, and create more content based on the content which is really winning. If content should be winning but isn’t, figure out why for later iterations — maybe it needs more external or internal promotion, a different slant, a different target market, etc.
Case Study

Getting into the heads of my teachers for a moment — a key step — most teachers have a lesson planned out and need an activity to slot into it. For example, they know they have a lesson about the American Revolution coming up. Some of them, who already like bingo, are going to look for American Revolution bingo cards. If my site ranked for that, that would be an opportunity to tell them that they could use software to create not just American Revolution activities but bingo for any lesson if they just bought my software.

So I made a CMS which, given a list of words and some explanatory text, would create a downloadable set of 8 bingo cards (great for parents, less great for teachers) on that topic, make a page to pitch that download in, and put an ad for Bingo Card Creator on the page. Note how I’m using this content to upsell the user into more of a relationship with me: signing up for a trial, giving me their email address, maybe eventually buying the software.

I have a teacher in New Mexico who produces the words and descriptions for me. The pages end up looking like this for the American Revolution. She produces 30 activities a month for $100, and I approve them and they go live instantly. This has been going on for a few years. In the last year, I’ve started doing end-to-end conversion tracking, so I can attribute sales directly to the initial activity people started with.

This really works. Some of the activities, like Summer bingo cards or Baby Shower Bingo cards, have resulted in thousands of dollars in sales in the last year. $3.50 in investment, thousands in returns

This graph shows the 132 of the 900 activities which generated a sale in the last year. You can see that there is a long tail which each generated one sale — in fact, a hundred of them. Sure, you might not think that Famous Volcano bingo cards would be that popular, but I’ll pay $3.50 to get a $30 sale as often as the opportunity is offered. These will also continue producing value in the next years, as they already have over the last several years: note that roughly half of these which produced a sale in the last 12 months were written in 2007 or 2008.

This took only a week or two to code up, and now 5 minutes a month sending my check and a thank-you note to the freelancer. I’ve paid her about $3,000 over the last few years to write content. In the last year alone, it has generated well over $20,000 in sales. If you do things this efficiently, SEO becomes a channel like PPC — put in a quarter, get out a dollar, redeploy the profits to increase growth.

Any software company can create content like this, with a bit of strategic thinking, some engineering deployed, and outsourced content creation. Try it — you can do an experiment for just a few hundred dollars. If it works, invest more. (Aaron Wall says that one of the big problems is that people do not exploit things that work. If you’ve got it, flaunt it — until it stops working.)
Linkbait

Linkbait is creating content intended to solicit links to your website. This can be by exploiting the psychology of users — they show things to friends because they agree with them strongly, or they hate them. They create links because it creates value for them, not value for you — it increases their social status, it flatters their view of the world, it solves their problems.

All people are not equal on the Internet: twenty-something technologists in San Fransisco create hundreds of times more links per year than retired teachers in Florida. All else being equal, it makes sense to create more of your linkbait targeted at heavy linking groups. They’ve been labeled the Linkerati by SEOMoz, and I recommend the entire series of posts on them highly.

Software developers have some unique, effective ways to create linkbait. For example:
Open Source Software

OSS developers and users are generally in very link-rich demographics. OSS which solves problems for businesses tends to pick up links from, e.g., consultants deploying it — they will cite your website to justify their billing rate. That is a huge win for you. There are also numerous blogs which cover practically everything which happens in OSS.

OSS is fairly difficult to duplicate as linkbait, because software development is hard. (Don’t worry about people copying it — you’ll be the canonical source, and the canonical source for OSS tends to win the citation link. Make sure that is on your site rather than on Github, etc.)

OSS in new fields in software — for example, Rails development the last few years — has landgrab economics. The first semi-decent OSS in a particular category tends to win a lot of the links and mindshare. So get cracking! And keep your eyes open for new opportunities, particularly for bits of infrastructural code which you were going to write for your business needs anyhow.
Case Study: A/Bingo

I’m extraordinarily interested in A/B testing, and wanted to do more of it on my site. At the time, there was no good A/B testing option for Rails developers. So I wrote one. It went on to become one of the major options for A/B testing in Rails, and was covered on the official Rails blog, Ajaxian, and many other fairly authoritative places on the Internet. It is probably the most effective source of links per unit effort I’ve ever had.

Some tactical notes:

Put it on your website. You did the work, get the credit for it.
Invest in a logo — you can get them done very cheaply at 99designs. Pretty things are trusted more.
Spend time “selling” the OSS software. Documentation, presentation of benefits, etc.
OSS doesn’t have to be a huge project like Apache. You can do projects in 1 day or 1 week which people will happily use. (Remember, pick things which solve problems.)

Chrome is fantastic and will keep getting better, but for now it’s all about Firefox for SEO tool plugins. The best plugins on Firefox for large site SEO include the following:

SEO Book’s toolbar is a handy one-stop reference point for looking at overall strength of a website, with easy access to key metrics such as inbound links (which it breaks up by type including .mil, .gov, and .edu), cache dates, indexed pages, key directory listings and other basic stuff. To be honest, its metrics aren’t the greatest, but it offers one of the quickest snapshots of a site’s authority and power to rank. Its real strength, however, lies in the data pulled in through other tools. With just a click, you can view the organic and paid search traffic data SEMrush and Compete have on hand, and pull in unique referring domain information from Majestic.

Its other strong point is the ability to compare SEO metrics of up to 5 sites at once. This is a very handy way to gauge the strength of competitors in SERPs, to locate high-value link opportunities, and to benchmark sites before undergoing extensive SEO work. SEO for Firefox is another excellent tool by Aaron Wall that, among other things, allows you to display various SEO metrics on-demand (or automatically, if you’re not as nice a person to APIs and search engines) directly in the SERPs. Even cooler, SEO for Firefox has an export to CSV option available. This is extremely handy when you’re doing specific site: searches and need to export the search results into a file for further analysis. Set the search results to 100 and export. Important note: you’ll need to use the older version of Google’s homepage for this to work, as Google’s new look isn’t compatible with the plugin. Other plugins of note for Firefox include the WAVE toolbar, which shows the semantic structure of pages in a very simple way. While the Web Developer toolbar also has a way to check header structure, I sometimes prefer WAVE because it’s very easy to toggle views and it works quickly. It also shows a very clear view of h(x) tags on a page. These show a “before and after” using the WAVE toolbar to quickly check a page’s semantic structure: The Web Developer toolbar has been written about many times in the past so I won’t bother to cover it here, but rest assured it can do pretty much anything and everything you need for development debugging (and that’s often part of SEO work). Another such tool is Firebug, which is absolutely essential but beyond the scope of this article. Just get it, and start using it, especially the Yslow (Yahoo!) and Page Speed (Google) add-ons. They do give different information, and personally I’ve been preferring Google’s Page Speed of late as it seems to be more accurate. It also happens to be based on the developer kit present in Apple’s Safari browser.

1. Canonical Issues - check canonical issues to make sure there is a preferred default page or domain preference (http:// or www).
2. No reason to have 3 variations of a home page .html, .php and default.htm, depending on your programming platform, server settings (Unix or Windows) as well as if you are using static pages or a content management system you will need to consolidate your website to either http:// or http://www to avoid splitting your site into less potent slivers.
3. Indexation and Crawl Frequency – See how many pages are crawled in a site to determine crawl frequency.
4. If you have a home page that is crawled regularly and your internal pages are ignored, then this is often a result of lack of internal or external links.
5. You can implement sitemaps on a folder by folder basis, then link from the footer in a site template to a maser sitemap page (where all the mini sitemaps are linked to) to increase indexation. This way the link from the footer consolidates the ranking factor to one page and THAT page feeds the various site maps equivocally (through a tiered drip-down site architecture effect).
6. Orphaned Pages and Dead Ends – check for orphaned pages to determine if pages are linked sufficiently to ensure crawling.
7. If you have a page or sub folder in a website that is only linked to from a few pages, then you cannot possibly expect that page to rank well in search engines. If you yourself will not “endorse” a page by linking to it properly (contextually from keywords in the body copy) or from the primary or secondary navigation, then you cannot possibly expect search engines to pay that page with any more credence than yourself.
8. Also be weary of PDF files (which can rank on their own and sponge link flow from your website). Make sure PDF files have absolute links (use the complete URL) back to your site, so they do not pool ranking factor and trap it where the rest of your site cannot benefit.
9. Dynamic URL’s – If pages are dynamically created, try to remove or rewrite as many parameters in the URL as possible or use URL / Mod rewrite.
10. Any time you have session data or query string parameters in a URL, you are decreasing the possibility of indexation. Particularly if there are conventions such as ?PID=23D-55.aspx trailing along, when a SEO friendly naming convention could have taken its place with a bit of programming. You can rewrite entire segments, sub folders, categories, etc. without losing functionality or compromising SEO value.
11. Naming Conventions – Use proper naming conventions (subject or keyword first, then plural variation, modifier, then tag line).
12. Here is a more useful post about how to use meta titles, descriptions and naming conventions, but the gist is simple. Create a hierarchy based on a relevant platform of topically reinforcing semantics using keyword clusters and related synonyms to toggle relevance from what search engines deem as the co-occurrence matrix.
13. Manage Outbound Links - Try to cap outbound links per page to fewer than 50 links for larger pages (10 for top level pages that need more ranking factor).
14. The more links that leave a page, the less ranking factor the elements on that page have as equity. The only instance when this is not a concern is if the page itself is augmented from other strong internal pages or have strong inbound links from other sites to offset the hemorrhaging effects of excessive links leaving a page.
15. Footer / Site wide Links - Use footer links sparingly by tactfully to tie site segments together.
16. Footer links still work (using 5-10 keyword-rich text links at the bottom of a page), but that can also diffuse the intent of pages that do not have enough content to distinguish themselves from other pages. If a page in a site does not have more than 300 unique words on that page, it can lose relevance as the navigation and other code structures collapse and all interject their shingles to offset or diffuse the pages unique purpose and optimal continuity. For example if you have a page that is only a paragraph or two and you expect that page to rank for specific keywords, your navigation alone may trump the relevance for that page. Check your cached pages in text view to see how search engines view your code and your content without style sheets or java script .
17. Footer links can help bring balance to pages with less content, but use them on pages with enough content to weather their contribution. Broken Links – Check for broken links which could be hemorrhaging link flow and weakening a site from within. Broken links irritate search engine spiders, and when they cannot connect the dots, your sites rankings suffer. If you are using WordPress our plugin SEO Ultimate features a 404 monitor that sweeps the site for broken links which you can find and eliminate.
18. Alt Attributes in Images – Use alt attributes on images to preserve content integrity while providing internal links for ranking factor.
19. Using the alt attribute in images allows you to reinforce topical relevance with the on page text based content to improve a pages relevance score.
20. Anchor Text Optimization – Use pertinent anchor text and do not waste link equity from excessively linking to non reciprocating pages within a site.
21. Employing anchor text optimization means using relevant keywords to link to relevant pages within a site. Do this enough and before you know it you are virtual theming (which means creating a secondary navigation contextually through keyword co-occurrence).
22. This alone can distinguish your site from competitors as each granular layer consolidates ranking factor for a website. This alone is one reason why Wikipedia dominates search results, due to virtual theming.
23. Flattening Site Architecture – Keep site architecture as flat as possible or use breadcrumbs to aid in information architecture and crawling.
24. Avoid using sub folders excessively within a website domain.com/categories/products/color/page.html vs. flattening the url and site by using more descriptive naming conventions for a page domain.com/electronics-black-sports-watch.html
25. The closer the more competitive keyword landing pages are to the root folder, the easier it will be for them to gain additional ranking factor, page rank and page strength to express the content on that page.
26. Content Volume - Ensure you have enough content to topple a competitive keyword.
27. Trying to rank for a keyword with 5 million competing pages with a handful of content is an exercise in futility. You will need topical relevance which means articles, posts or pages all internally linked and consolidated to create the proper on page signals for that keyword.
28. For every keywords there is a relevance threshold and tipping point, you will need to offset competitors by having more on page affluence as well as off page peer review (links from other authorities). However, in either case, content is a requirement.
29. Contextual Links – Link contextually within related document to select preferred landing pages through virtual theming.
30. The premise is simple, if you are on a page about engines, and have a keyword pistons appear, then link the keyword pistons to the piston page. Do this for every keyword (only once per page if it appears more than that) and you have just added a virtual theme to your keywords. This means that each page can now work together collectively to support the parent theme (which is the main/root keyword itself).
31. Meta Tags - For larger sites, exclude meta descriptions but for smaller sites, use the meta data as an extra title or place for alternative keywords.
32. Always use a succinct and relevant title, but if you have multiple pages on a topic, then let search engines decide which keywords are more prominent and relevant by excluding the meta description / snippet from the page.
33. Also make sure that if you are using a content management system that your pages do not all share a common, generic meta title or description as a default. This is the fastest way to shoot down rankings in a site (lack of character).
34. Deep Links – Get at least 5-10 inbound links to each page via deep links from other sites in order to create buoyancy.
35. A page without links either from the site itself, or other sites is a page that has little value to readers or search engines. Popularity matters and for the millions of site owners who may or may not be aware of this simple fact, you MUST have deep links to a page if you want that page to exceed standard normalization.
36. A website replete with deep links (links to other pages other than the homepage) will start to have those individual pages rank and appear for multiple keywords. Not only does this create a more robust user experience, but the dependency for your rankings is not tied to an off topic or generic page like the homepage.
37. The take away here is, get at least 5-10 inbound links to each page minimum (if that page is expected to gain traction) otherwise, link to another page that is the preferred landing page and get deep links to it.
38. Keyword Stemming - Link to a page with multiple anchors (to create keyword stemming) and with “exact match” keywords to elevate just that term.
39. You can control how each page in your website ranks by being mindful about internal and external lining habits. This post called SEO Rankings and How to Create Them provides a masterful breakdown of this process.
40. RSS Feed Syndication - Set up multiple RSS feeds within a site to syndicate your content to attract natural backlinks from other sites.
41. A proper RSS campaign alone can build sufficient links for your website. Combined with a content development strategy and time-released topical content, this alone can drive traffic and increase domain authority to produce rankings and relevance in even the most competitive vertical markets. 42. Trust Rank – Linking from aged pages can pass along trust to new landing pages or sub folders or sub domains. Don’t look past your own site for ranking factor.

46. Sub Domains – Despite abuse in the past, sub domains still work.
47. If your website is sagging under its own weight, then segment a new section of the site with a subdomain to emphasize topical content or to topple a competitive keyword vertical.
48. Search engines pay particular attention to keywords in the URL and while you cannot always make the best of a bad situation, sometimes you can create islands of relevance using a keyword rich subdomain to augment your existing website to create a new beacon of relevance.

SEO BlackHat And How To Cheat SEO

Black Hat SEO is an on going "cheat" article on how to manipulate SEO results search engine optimization. We add to this article quite often so bookmark this page. we do not recommend to use this way, use it at your own risk.
Remove info from a Search Engine – Short term
You can’t remove anything. Don’t listen to what any other so-called “SEO Expert” says. All you can do is push the information down further.

Here is a cheat way of manipulating the results of most search engines:

Low budget approach--

1. Download a program [Bing for it] called Tukanas Hits Generator. Next, you need the password: "AAAAAAAAA". Make sure you get the real software, there's some bogus ones out there.

2. Set the program up (URL list tab) to contain the same URL as the one that does NOT contain your unwanted information. For example, google your name + something. Like:"my name" +goodstuff. If the results are the ones you are wanting (without your priv info), copy-and-paste the URL on your browser (the Google/Bing/Yahoo URL) and paste it into the URL list of Tukanas.

3. Go to HideMyAss and look for their IP:Port proxy address list. Copy and paste into Tukanas's Proxies tab. You can edit the proxy file directly on your harddrive which may be faster, just keep the same format but delete the existing addresses there-- they'll be dead by now.

4. Set the program (Statistics tab) to the following:

Hits Per URL: 10000
Number of threads: 25
Socket timeout (send): 10
Socket timeout (receive): 10
Hits per hour: 500

Make sure all check boxes are checked. Hit the "START" button and walk away. This is a very similar cheat that those "removal" websites use.

You'll need to do this for many weeks, run it as often as you can. Don't use a computer you often use, if you can help it.

The Effect:

You manipulate the search engine into believing people want your name associated with a keyword. So eventually you can type in your name (in quotes) and those associated keyword elements will appear first. You cannot remove the original, bad information. Don’t even try, you’re wasting your time.

Warnings:

Tukanas is a non-supported piece of junk software so don’t put too much faith into it.
Using your own IP instead of a Proxy list will cause Google to BAN your Ip/Mac from using Google. Not good. Obfuscate your PC as much as you can.
It’ll take weeks of running this app over and over and over and…

Remove info from a Search Engine—Long term

If you’ve researched how to remove info from a search engine then you already know the common ways of doing it. Allow us to iterate:

Ask webmaster to remove info. Most won’t, especially hate machines—they love the drama.
Go to the search engine’s “customer service” or “webmaster” page and follow their instructions. Google rarely removes anything. This is one of the reasons why BING is becoming more popular as (surprisingly) Microsoft is more merciful. Google is a LIBERAL organization so if your information contains liberal topics, you won’t get the time of day from Google. In fact, you’ll notice liberal websites will always get higher preference on their results. Google has their “Favorites”. They claim they don’t but we have antidotal evidence that they do with the DailyKOS hate machine being one of their favorites.
Respond to bad info with good info. Hopefully someone with some intelligence will dig further to get the “other side of the issue”.
Pay a service like Reputation. Note these guys can’t do much more than push your information down 2 or 3 pages and for a lot of money doing some of the techniques we've already mentioned. We’re talking thousands of dollars. Save your money and go to step #9 instead, you’ll get better results.
Write biographies on all the Biography websites. Use your real name and real data putting you in a better spotlight.
Write positive things on blogs using your real name. Accentuate the positive helps eliminate the negative. Constant… constant… constant writing on other blogs and websites is necessary, even for up to a year or more. If the website you are trying to push down is real popular, it'll be very tough to get it to move. If the website is a popular LIBERAL website, you'll never get Google to bump it down; even Reputation has problems with these.
Your information will be on the search engine forever and ever and ever. Nothing can remove it (we're working on this right now). Don’t use your real name if you can help it, especially if what you say could be misconstrued and become the target of a hate machine on the Left or the Right. The positive thing about this is—eventually every citizen on the planet will have a bad reputation because, face it, we’re not all perfect.
Get an injunction in court against the Search Engine to remove the data. Much harder, more expensive, but a definite solution. You’ll have to get that injunction in the State that the Search Engine is based. For example, Mountain View, CA is the location of Google and where you’ll need to go.
Bribe a Search Engine employee to remove data. This works and could cost you a few thousand dollars but we know of people who have successfully done this. You’ll find employees on LinkIn.com. Don’t be stingy; these people are putting their jobs on the line for you.
Do press releases with your name in it. You’ll usually have to pay for this but it works and it’s fairly inexpensive.
If the info listed about you is defamatory and the webmaster won't remove it, try the website's ISP. Many Internet Service Providers have a set of rules they follow and many don't allow hosted websites to post defamatory information. You can find out a website's ISP using this whois function. This information could lead you to the ISP's own homepage and, hence, their policies.
Support any legislation in the future that targets Search Engines and their contents. For example, the "PROTECT-IP Act" currently in congress can be manipulated to shut websites down that have bad info about you using loopholes. This same bill could shut down Google's search engine (not necessarily a bad thing all things considered).

Remove an offending website permanently

Everybody talks about how to use Google's commands to search for credit card numbers, free files, etc. Those are stupid tricks worthy only of criminals. We're not criminals, we're simply trying to remove information! Therefore, Curious Internet has no interest in such childish behavior.
One way to remove an offending website is to "proxify" them. This, of course, will remove the entire offending website from Google leaving their webmaster scratching his head. There are work arounds for the webmaster but, like with radar guns and radar detectors, there's always another way to skin a cat (eww).
This is involved. It is also a recognized problem with Google who has not yet figured out a sure fire
way of fixing it. In fact, they've been researching it for over 2 years now and still have no real way around the problem.

You need:

1. Dedicated computer running Windows
2. Proxy server software
Get it from: http://www.youngzsoft.net/ccproxy/proxy-server-download.htm
3. Web crawl software to copy the offending website's entire contents.
Get it from: http://www.4shared.com/file/jJ0AZ8mh/HTTrack_Website_Copier.html

Instructions:

Set up the proxy server software, which is beyond the scope of this article. Once you have set up the software, go to the home page of the offending webpage and start a crawl to copy the entire contents to a directory on your harddrive. Using the web crawler is easy but beyond the scope of this article.
Now, set up your proxy to allow Google crawler to crawl web pages on itself. Make sure your web "URL" on your proxy has the same name as the offending website. For example, if the offending web site is "hatemachine.com", yours will be "myproxyservername:\\hatemachine.com".
Modify the fake website's webbot file to "not index" and "not follow" all pages. You can Bing for those instructions elsewhere.

Step up a local website on your dedicated PC. Here are the instructions:

Make sure you have cable modem, DSL or another high-speed connection. A dialup telephone modem is NOT good enough.
Get a DNS hostname for your home Internet connection. This is not the name of the offending website but a different name such as "byebyebaby".
Get a static local IP address for your computer within your home network. If you are using a router with DHCP, make sure you dedicate a single address to your dedicated PC.
Configure your router to correctly forward connections on port 80 (the HTTP port) to your web server. Even if you think you don't have a router, you probably do— many popular cable and DSL modems include wifi or wired Ethernet jacks for multiple computers, which means they contain a built-in router. If your ISP blocks port 80, choose an alternative port number and forward that (or get a better ISP that welcomes websites at home.
Configure Windows Firewall to allow your web server to communicate on port 80.
Get Apache as your webserver. This is beyond our scope of explaination but isn't that hard to do. You will want to host a "copy" of the offending website on this machine.
Test your web server from your own computer.
Test your web server from a computer that is NOT on your home network to make sure you followed all of the steps correctly.

Next, make sure you add your website to the search engine's "Add URL" feature. This will make sure the search engine crawls your website, otherwise they won't even know you exist.

Congrats, the offending website will go bye-bye in the next few days.

How do you get around someone doing this to you? Well, that too is beyond the scope of this article. We don't want to give away that information as it'll help offending webmasters correct the issue. But, should one figure it out then all you need to do is repeat the steps of recrawling their website and rewriting the webbot file.

Why does this work?

In a nut shell, by setting up a proxy server you are creating a faux ISP. On this faux ISP you are creating a website with the same name as the offending website. This duplicate website naming is what causes the problem with the search engines. Because search engines don't index sites based on their ISP server AND their URL name, they can be taken advantage of. So simple a child could do it.

Now that this secret is out (less than a hundred people knew about it before this writing, we suspect), you'll now see a lot of websites disappear from Google, Bing, and others.

NOTE: As of 1/2/2012 we've tested this hack and it works on Google. We are testing Yahoo. Curious Internet is developing a Weapon of Mass Disruption program which targets search engines (seWMD). If we can't get them to work nicely with people, we can use their search algorithms against them. Yes, this can be done. Most search engines use Mash Up processes and correlation algorithms to sort and search their data. These algorithms are considered trade secrets however their behavior is easily analyzed using a number of experiments that we've had in place for quite some time (see www.googleschmoogle.blogspot.com as an example, other experiements are being kept secret).

Like KFC and their secret mix of herbs and spices, once you analyze the information yourself you are free to publish that information. That is our goal.

To optimize your post titles make them keyword rich and ensure the title clearly explains what the blog post is about. Try to put your keywords at the beginning of your title for best results and avoid repeating your keywords within the title. Avoid long titles as Google only displays about 65 characters in the search results anyway.

Title tags are important if your WordPress is to attract traffic and rank in search engine results. On your blog home page the blog title appears between the title tags while on each individual post page it is the name of the article itself. While the title tags themselves are unseen by the visitor to your blog they are read when search engines crawl your blog.

Search engines use title tags to display your post title as a headline in search engine results. Search engines also display a description of the article either by extracting it from the post content usually by picking up the first 150 characters of your post or by reading the meta description of the post if one exists.

Meta descriptions can be crafted for individual posts in WordPress to good effect. Make descriptions unique for each post and ensure they contain your target keywords and keyword phrases to encourage search engines to extract snippets from them. Heading tags are important for optimal SEO. Most WordPress templates use html header tags sized <h2> or <h3> for the post title. In the past major search engines like Google gave precedence to tags with <h1> ahead of anything else but how important <h1> tags are today is less certain. You could tweak the heading size of your post title if you wish however take care to ensure the look of your template isn't compromised. The Megaupload case touches on many of the most controversial aspects of the antipiracy debate. Megaupload and similar sites, like Rapidshare and Mediafire, are often promoted as convenient ways to legitimately transfer large files; a recent promotional video had major stars like Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas singing Mega-upload’s praises. But they have become notorious inside media companies, which see the legitimate uses as a veil concealing extensive theft.

Mr. Dotcom, a portly 37-year-old with dual Finnish and German citizenship, has made himself a visible target. He splits his time between Hong Kong and New Zealand and casts himself in flamboyant YouTube videos. His role as one of the most prominent Web locker operators has earned him a half-joking nickname in Hollywood: Dr. Evil.

According to the indictment, he earned $42 million from Mega-upload’s operations in 2010.

The indictment against Mega-upload, which stems from a federal investigation that began two years ago, was handed down by a grand jury in Virginia two weeks ago but was not unsealed until Thursday.

It quotes extensively from correspondence among the defendants, who work for Megaupload and its related sites. The correspondence, the indictment says, shows that the operators knew the site contained unauthorized content.

Before you even build your website you need to determine what niche or theme your website is about. Same with any other page, there’s going to be main topic for it. Once you decide on topic, you need to find keywords and phrases that relate to your theme, analyze them and pick most relevant ones but they also should be keywords in demand. It would be a waste of your time to optimize your website for keywords that nobody is even searching for. How do you find in demand keywords? The most popular resources are WordTracker, KeywordCountry and KeywordElite. Using these tools you will be able to narrow your keywords to ones that have the highest search volume and not that many websites to compete against which is known as Keyword Effectiveness Index (KEI).

Analyze your Competition
Website linking structure and number of links pointing to your site or page is crucial to ranking High in Google and if you rank good in Google, chances are you’ll probably do good in Yahoo and other search engines but top 3 search engines that will bring most traffic are Google, Yahoo and MSN. Analyzing your competitors is important and included in Free SEO tips because search engines do analyze incoming links to your website as part of their ranking criteria which is called Page Rank (PR).

Title Optimization
Many SEO professionals still argue over this but the page title tag element is still one of the most important factors for ranking highly in the search engines.

The title tag is displayed as the first line of text in the blue row at the top of any browsing window. Search Engine Friendly title tag is ideally 3-9 words (60-80 characters) maximum in length, straight and to the point, this is what will show up in search engine results as a link to your page. Have at least one main keyword in title tag but don’t stuff all of your keywords in it. SEO Tip: make sure your Page Title Tag is relevant to the content on the page and EVERY page should have it’s own Title tag.

Meta Tags Optimization
META tags are hidden code of information in the head area of your web pages and is used to communicate with search engine spiders/crawlers. The most important META tags you need to utilize in your webpages are:

Description
Keywords
Robots

I personally don’t believe that sequencing of these tags in certain order is that important. Even though I see many websites put title tag after description and keywords tags lately but there is no proof that it is better for SEO. The effective META description tag consists of 25 to 30 words or less but using no more than 160 to 180 characters total (including spaces) or some Search Engines would not consider it Search Engine Friendly.

Optimization of Keywords Meta tags
The meta keyword tag is also sometimes useful as a way to help your page come up for synonyms or unusual words that don’t appear on the page itself but don’t fret too much over your Keywords Meta tag, instead utilize keywords and keyword phrases from your Title Tag element, Description Meta Tag, heading tag and first one or two paragraphs of visible content. Optimal Keyword Meta Tag has 15 to 20 words max. SEO Tip: Don’t repeat your keywords more than 3 times or search engine will consider it as spam of their search results and don’t include keywords that are not in the main content section of your page, Robots Meta tag will let search engine know if you want a particular page to be or NOT be indexed or to follow or not to follow links on given page.

Optimize Pages with Headings
Header tags will tell the search engine what words are important in the context of your page. Using <h1>,<h2>,<h3>, etc.. tags is the best way to highlight important keywords. With that in mind consider using keywords relevant to the page content (theme) in your Header Tags. The best practice is to place your primary keyword in your <h1> tags and your secondary keyword into the <h2> tags.
You can think of an <h1> header tag as a title for whatever content you have on your page and you should have ONLY ONE (1) h1 tag on any page.
h2 and h3 header tags should be thought of as a sub headings for your page. You should place your 2nd most important keyword in the <h2> header tag. The <h2> tag should be placed somewhere towards the top half of your webpage, in any case below <h1> tag.

Use Deep Linking and Anchor Text
When you exchange links or submit your website to directories you want to link to as many pages on your site as possible as this will tell search engines that you have a lot of good and worthwhile content. If you have all links pointing to your homepage it will tell search engine that your site is very shallow and they might think that the links were created with some automation software instead of naturally (organic).
Use keywords in Anchor text of your links but you definitely don’t want all your incoming links to look the same, because that also looks like automation and you might get red flagged by Google. SEO Tip: Use your website URL sometimes, your company name other times and different but related keywords in anchor text of inbound links.
Getting as many as possible inbound links have become #1 priority in SEO world as that will get your website higher Page Rank and therefore higher rankings in Search results. There are different links you can acquire: Reciprocal and One Way links. One way links are by far better and much harder to get but any link you can get to point to your website is better than none.

Create Site Map and Google XML Map
Every website needs a Sitemap big or small. Sitemap should be linked to from every page on your site. A site map will help users and search engine robots find all the important pages on your site with just two clicks. This is especially helpful if your site has a hard-to-crawl navigation menu like java script or images based navigation. For WordPress blogs I recommend downloading this free sitemap generator plugin. You can see example on my sitemap page.

Smaller sites can use second navigation bar in the footer that will act as a small mini site map. This is nothing more than all your important pages as links in the footer.

By submitting a XML Sitemap to a search engine, you are making easier for that engine crawlers to crawl and index pages of your site, Sitemaps are particularly beneficial when users can’t reach all areas of a website through a browseable interface. For regular websites there are many free online xml sitemap generators, just Google it but for your WordPress blog you can use this free Google XML sitemap generator plugin as it will also create Robots.txt file which is the next Free SEO Tip.

Create Robots.txt file
The robots.txt file will instruct search engine robots what pages and/or folders on your blog or website should be or should NOT be crawled and indexed. Most Content Management Software (WordPress, Joomla, etc.) will have files and folders that are not relevant for search engines (like images or admin files) and you really don’t want them to crawl them because there is no relevant content on them so creating a simple robots.txt file can actually improve your website crawlability and therefore rankings and organic traffic.

Ever since there have been learn search engines 2012, there have been people who have used tricks to achieve high search engine rankings. In the beginning, these search engine techniques were fairly simple, such as stuffing hidden tags with keywords or using invisible text on pages. As the search engines caught on to these tactics, the techniques used to achieve high search engine rankings evolved into more sophisticated methodologies. Current examples of these questionable search engine techniques include using computer programs to design hundreds of different optimized pages (commonly called "doorway pages"), and feeding search engines a different page than what the average visitor sees (called "cloaking"). Most practitioners of such tactics try to justify their use by claiming that search engines use "unrealistic" criteria for ranking, and that making the necessary adjustments to their website to match that criteria, and thus achieve high search engine rankings, would somehow undermine the visitor experience.

What is ignored is the fact that the search engines have established ranking criteria based upon extensive study of their users. In most (but not all) cases, the sites that do not have high search engine rankings are not giving the visitor what the search engine, through its exhaustive research of the searching public's preferences, has deemed important. Unless they have the time and resources to perform a full-fledged study of their own on what search engine users want, how could a web designer or business owner expect to know better?
It turns out that web searchers want informational content that addresses a question or need. They also want the title and description they see on a search engine to exactly match the contents of the page they visit. In addition, they find that pages that are deemed important by others are generally more useful (this is called link popularity, in which a search engine gives a ranking boost to sites that have incoming links from quality, related sites). Why should these criteria for high search engine rankings be considered unrealistic? Moreover, why should search engines be blamed for the ranking problems of an existing site that doesn't match their criteria or uses questionable search engine techniques?

If a person in charge of a website five years ago began concentrating on the elements listed above, they would probably still have high search engine rankings today (and probably would have seen rankings improve over time, as search engines removed sites that were using illegal search engine techniques). If this same person continually concentrated on questionable search engine techniques, they would have had to start from scratch several times as the search engines repeatedly caught on to their tactics and penalized or removed the site. The beauty of the content-driven approach is that there is no risk, and that what works well today will almost certainly work well in the future. On the other hand, many of the current search engine techniques employed to achieve high search engine rankings are likely to become just as obsolete as hidden text is today. Doorway pages are already being banished from most engines, and some engines (most notably Google) have openly stated that they will ban sites that use cloaking. In short, put informative content on your pages. Name each individual page according to its contents. Look for quality sites related to yours and ask them to exchange links. Your search engine techniques shouldn't center around taking an existing site and changing it as little as possible for the sole purpose of achieving high search engine rankings- it should center around making whatever modifications are necessary to directly address the interests of your visitors. In the search engine optimization industry, there is a saying that "Content is King". This is true in many ways, but really only tells half the story. The Visitor is King. Keep that in mind when working on your website, and the search engines are sure to reward you with high search engine rankings.

Myth 1: You should submit your URLs to search engines. This may have helped once upon a time, but it's been at least 5 or 6 years since that's been necessary.

Myth 2: You need a Google Sitemap. If your site was built correctly, i.e., it's crawler-friendly, you certainly don't need a Google Sitemap. It won't hurt you to have one, and you may be interested in Google's other Webmaster Central Tools, but having a Google Sitemap isn't going to get you ranked better.

Myth 3: You need to update your site frequently. Frequent updates to your pages may increase the search engine crawl rate, but it won't increase your rankings. If your site doesn't need to change, don't change it just because you think the search engines will like it better. They won't. In fact, some of the highest ranking sites in Google haven't been touched in years.

Myth 4: PPC ads will help/hurt rankings. This one is funny to me because about half the people who think that running Google AdWords will affect their organic rankings believe that they will bring them down; the other half believe they will bring them up. That alone should tell you that neither is true!

Myth 5: Your site will be banned if you ignore Google's guidelines. There's nothing in Google's webmaster guidelines that isn't common sense. You can read them if you like, but it's not mandatory in order to be an SEO. Just don't do anything strictly for search engines that you wouldn't do anyway, and you'll be fine. That said, the Google guidelines are much better than they used to be, and may even provide you with a few good tidbits of advice.

Myth 6: Your site will be banned if you buy links. This one does have some roots in reality, as Google likes to scare people about this. They rightly don't want to count paid links as votes for a page if they can figure out that they are paid, but they often can't. Even if they do figure it out, they simply won't count them. It would be foolish of them to ban entire sites because they buy advertising on other sites.

Myth 7: H1 (or any header tags) must be used for high rankings. There's very little (if any) evidence to suggest that keywords in H tags actually affect rankings, yet this myth continues to proliferate. My own tests don't seem to show them making a difference, although it's difficult to know for sure. Use H tags if it works with your design or content management system, and don't if it doesn't. It's doubtful you'll find it makes a difference one way or the other.

Myth 8: Words in your meta keyword tag have to be used on the page. I used to spread this silly myth myself many years ago. The truth is that the Meta keyword tag was actually designed to be used for keywords that were NOT already on the page, not the opposite! Since this tag is ignored by Google and used only for uncommon words in Yahoo, it makes little difference at this point anyway.

Myth 9: SEO copy must be 250 words in length. This one is interesting to me because I am actually the one who made up the 250 number back in the late '90s. However, I never said that 250 was the exact number of words you should use, nor did I say it was an optimal number. It's simply a good number to be able to write a nice page of marketing copy that can be optimized for 3-5 keyword phrases. Shorter copy ranks just as well, as does longer copy. Use as many or as few words as you need to use to say what you need to say.

Myth 10: You need to optimize for the long tail. No, you don't. By their very nature, long-tail keyword phrases are uncompetitive; meaning that not many pages are using those words, and not that many people are searching for them in the engines. Because of this, ranking for long-tail keywords is easy - simply include them somewhere in a blog post or an article, and you'll rank for them. But that's not optimization.

Whenever it is scheduled or invoked via the URL, this plugin will generate an XML formatted that search engines are able to read and parse. If you selected "Yes" to the Auto-notification setting, The 4 major search engines will be notified each time the sitemap is generated.

* Google Sitemap files are gzipped for space savings
* Forum and thread pages are listed with pagination (i.e. all pages for each forums/thread are included in the sitemap)

Reports List
The 'Show Reports List' link will display a report of each time your vBSEO Sitemap generator executed, including the (1) date, (2) run time, (3) total URLs included, and (4) and change in # of URLs included from the last generation.

Each vBSEO Sitemap generation record will include a (1) "View details" and (2) "Remove record" link. The "View Details" link shows more detailed information about the sitemap generated. The "Remove record" will permanently delete the record from your reports.

Downloads Log
The 'Show Sitemap Downloads Log' link will display a report of each time your vBSEO Sitemap was downloaded by either a search engine (Identified by the Bot's name) or by another user agent (i.e. Web browser, etc.).

The report includes the (1) date, (2) name of sitemap file downloaded, (3) Bot, (4) IP address of the downloader, and the (5) User-agent.

Each vBSEO Sitemap download record will include a "Remove record" link which will permanently delete the record from your reports.

Search Engine Bots Activity Log
Use it to track Search engine activity on your sitemaps. This area displays how often, and what volume of pages search engines visit your site on a daily basis.

Run Generator
The 'Run Sitemap Generator' link will automatically regenerate your vBSEO Search Engine XML Site sitemaps.
