Came across another (I have lost the account, actually) service from SeoQuake Team.
KeywordSift is a convenient service for selection of semantically close words of commercial value. It is based at SEMRush data and contains 36 million keywords. Beta version is still free and it is only limited in the number of keywords for export into CSV – the maximum you may download is 100. However, there is no need to extract a lot of words from the service.

Without reading the manual it is quite difficult to get used to the interface, so I’ll give a few examples for you to understand its capabilities better. While working with it, my opinion about the service varied from “another useless service” to “an excellent thing, will never tell anyone about it in my blog” and, finally, “gonna write about it in the blog, but also going to use it”.
So, let’s take the keyword “dating”. Most keyword tools will give you results which look more like a table of letters from an ophthalmologist for this request, but let’s see what KeywordSift offers.

I took only half of the original table, as it is almost the same until the end. At first glance, nothing unusual. We all are bored to death with keywords we see here, each of which contains a basic keyword, plus data from the Google Traffic Estimator.

But let’s move forward. Let’s try to turn a few adjustment knobs of our sift; there have to be a reason why they called it “sift”. We will try to find keywords with non-zero number of queries, low cost competition and cost less than $ 0.5.

This is much more interesting. Pay attention to the keywords “finding your match”, “okay cupid”, “find your best partner” and “free online community with photo profiles”. The basic keyword is absent, subjects observed, and moreover, the maximum cost’s just fine.

Further studies give us such interesting keywords as “hot or not girls”, “go fish dating”, “am i hot or not”, “hot or not”, “hotor not”, ”www amihotornot com”, ”how hot are you”.

As you already understood, I am now writing about the stage “an excellent thing, will never tell anyone about it in my blog” ?

And finally, a fly in the ointment

Despite the fact that keywords are not very popular, and the minimum rate for them may be quite low – do not forget about an indicator of the quality of AdWords.

Therefore, no matter how powerful is the tool for keywords selection, or for the searching for other people’s ads, or for spying on competitors – the success of affiliate advertising campaign depends on the affiliate’s skills first of all, and only after that at the choice of instruments. By the way, and SpotPartners.ru also writes about it.

Wish you a successful advertising campaigns!

Recently, “Questions and Answers” services were widely adopted. The largest portals such as Yahoo and Google are developing this direction. Also there are several popular specialized portals, for example, wikihow.com, answers.com etc. We have decided to find out, who works with «How to» inquires more active. As an indicator of activity we have chosen quantity of keywords on which domain is included into TOP20 Google organic results. We took 950 thousand inquiries containing a phrase «How to» and studied Organic and AdWords Results of Google US on them.

Here you can see TOP10 domains, receiving traffic on «How to» inquiries from TOP20 organic results:

Unexpectedly?
And now take a look at the TOP10 the domains receiving the traffic on «How to» inquiries from AdWords Results:

So what is interesting in these results?
It is necessary to pay attention to that fact that yahoo.com and google.com receive traffic basically on answers.yahoo.com and answers.google.com. Thus Yahoo Answers in Google collects more traffic than Google Answers.

There is only one significant advertiser in AdWords – it is ask.com. It has 10 times more inquiries on which it gets traffic than his competitors. Where do ask.com’s announcements refer? For example, having clicked on the announcement with the text «How To Be Successful. Search for How To Be Successful. Try Ask Jeeves Today! www. Ask.com» we are redirected to the following page:

http://uk.ask.com/web?q=how+to+be+successful&o=41439049&l=dis&siteid=41439049&dm=lang&jss=0

It is quite densely filled with advertisements suggesting that Adsense arbitrage, although it is not allowed by Google:
http://www.google.com/search?q=Google+AdSense+disabling+arbitrage+publisher+accounts+as+of+June+1st

Interesting is the fact that the number of common organic keywords in organic results for ehow.com and wikihow.com almost coincides with the number of organic keywords for wikihow.com. There is a very small number of keywords for which you will see wikihow.com but no ehow.com in results. How so?

At this link you can find TOP100 domain receiving traffic from Google organic results on «How to» inquiry: http://semisland.com/bases/howto/top100_domain_by_organic.txt

The most surprising is that the leader by quantity of «How to» keywords on which domains receive the traffic from TOP20 Google is not the largest services of answers to questions, or portals, but ehow.com. Frankly speaking, it is surprising. Let’s have a more detailed look at ehow.com.

According to the Alexa rank data, attendance of ehow.com has grown almost in 4 times since October, 2008.
http://traffic.alexa.com/graph?&w=400&h=220&o=f&c=1&y=r&b=ffffff&r=2y&u=ehow.com&

Compete.com shows that the quantity of unique visitors has increased 4 times during the last year:
http://grapher.compete.com/ehow.com_uv_310.png

QuantCast also confirms this tendency:
http://www.quantcast.com/profile/trafficGraph?ggt=swg&wunit=wd%3Acom.ehow&drg=us&dtr=dm&dty=pp

There are natural differences, the sources of data, but the dynamics affecting…
The domain was registered in 2001, but there is another record for 1999 in the archive. Visitors can explore this more accurately:

http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.ehow.com

http://web.archive.org/web/1999150%161429/ehow.com/home/home.asp

Google had indexed more than 3mln. pages of a domain:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=site%3Awww.ehow.com&btnG=Search

And according to the Yahoo, ehow.com has nearly 3 million backlinks.

http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/advsearch?p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ehow.com&bwm=i&bwmo=d&bwmf=s
41 links from Yahoo! Directory:
http://search.yahoo.com/search/dir?h=c&p=www.ehow.com
and 20 from DMOZ http://search.dmoz.org/cgi-bin/search?search=ehow.com&all=yes&cat=&t=s

We have resorted to the help of AdsSpy and have found out that Google Analytics code installed on the domain ehow.com, also installed on more than 350 domains mainly registered in a zone «.tv». Sites are very various on subjects, from yogaworld.tv to rapwars.tv. Yes, there are definitely a lot we can learn from these guys. They obviously know «how to» very well ?
Well, we have satisfied our curiosity, as well as yours, hopefully.

Wait for new SEOQuake Team researches.

Very curious and inquisitive people work in SEOQuake Team. Really curious. We cannot do anything about this. We collect and we analyze the information all the time. And very frequent, studying a question, which is interesting for us, we obtain the collateral data. Sometimes this data is even more interesting than the original question we work over.

It happened the same way at this time. We have implemented a set of activities aimed at making the SEMRush data base better and cleaner and inadvertently received data on geographical distribution of the number of queries in Google.

And since we are not only very curious, but also generous, we have decided to present you our find. That’s what we have:

We took the general number of queries in Google as 100%, which goes to the United States. We have expressed as a percentage of the U.S. the number of requests which go to other countries:

These figures seem quite realistic. They look strange only for China and Russia that can be explained by presence of very powerful national search systems such as Baidu and Yandex in these countries.

We should make clear that to obtain these data, we took TOP10000 of most commonly requested keywords and analyzed them using Google Keyword Tool and Google Insight. On the basis of a formula, which is used to calculate Insight (information can be seen here: http://google.com/googleblogs/pdfs/google_predicting_the_present.pdf) we calculated the ratio of 10000 keywords for the countries and averaged the results.

We hope that our data entertained you, and perhaps has been useful.

According to the survey, which SEOQuake Team recently conducted among its users, most of the specialists in search marketing thinks that blogs are one of the most authoritative source of professional information. This is natural – Internet is huge and professional blogs serve as the aggregator and filter of the information flow. Most people have their favorite authors (and SEOQuake Team is no exception) – the leaders of opinion – that we treat with great confidence.
So we decided to check, how much Google loves SEO-blogs.
The study was conducted on the domains. It is clear that a private blog can not draft with such monsters as Search Engine Watch, where in addition to the blog there are lots of other information, but there are a number of indicators that can assess the effectiveness of traffic control, for example, the average cost of a visitor coming from the organic results or how the trust is a list of keywords on which the domain gets traffic.
We have decided to take the Top SEO blogs, published in Invesp.com in August 2008 as a basis. Remoteness of the publication didn’t scare us because really popular and authoritative blogs were included in the list, and the study itsef seemed interesting and objective to us.
Obviously, we use our own service SEMRush as a tool for research.
For those who are not familiar with it yet, we are going to explain. SEMRush.com has a database of more than 30 million keywords on which it examines TOP20 of Google organic results, as well as AdWords, and provides information for more than 12mln. domains.
Here is a list of the surveyed blogs, sorted by the amount of traffic from Google organic results according to the SEMRush.com:

The last row in this table looks funny, and we have met this curios situation several times during the research. It seems that Google does not like the Matt Cutts blog. You can believe in? We can’t. ? It is possible that we get this data because until recently, the Matt Cutts blog was located at the domain www.mattcutts.com. Undoubted leader in the number of traffic is Search Engine Watch, but do not forget that this is not just a blog, but a great professional portal.

Now it would be interesting to find out if the traffic engaged by bloggers valuable.
We sort the domains with blogs again, this time by the value of the traffic, which they receive from Google organic results. Here, it is necessary to clarify that the value of organic traffic is estimated by SEMRush, as if the traffic is purchased in AdWords.

And how do they attract this traffic? Using what keywords? For the beginning, let’s find out, how many keywords bloggers use to get traffic from organic results.

The situation in this rating is very similar to the one we saw in the previous two cases. To see if the keywords on which our domains receive traffic are target, you can look into the Keyword Report, by following the link next to each domain. According to our observations, the quality of traffic is directly proportional to the height of the provisions of a domain in our rating.
As mentioned above, it is difficult to compare a private blog and electronic media on such parameters as the number and total cost of the traffic involved. But you can compare them by an average cost of a visitor. Let’s do it.

Here we see a more objective picture. Search Engine Watch, the leader of the previous rating is only at 7 and the top spot with a serious gap is headed by the Online Marketing Blog, but on the 3 spot, we see SEO Scoop, which were hanging in the tail up to this moment.
With regard to assessing the quality of traffic, SEMRush has its own rating (SEMRush Rank), which is based on an assessment of the following indexes:

- Number of users who come from the Google search engine
- Cost of search traffic
SEMRush rating indicates how well a website is optimized, and how effective it buys ads in AdWords.
In the following table, we have represented a number of positions of domains under analysis in SEMRush Rank.

By the way, speaking about AdWords campaigns, at the time of the last SEMRush database update, there were 2 advertising campaigns of the studied domains, and here is data on them:

Title

For each domain you may see the link to AdWords keywords report, where you can find a list of words for which it is advertised. With regard to Search Engine Watch, they have more than target keywords in a campaign. It is obvious that great specialists work for the site.

Well, that’s all. We hope that our little research will help you to find your bearings on the informational ground.
